Brielle is a good girl. She has played by the rules for most of her life, doing only what she is told. Listened to her overbearing mother. Obeyed her stepfather. Let her boyfriend point out her flaws and strived to be the perfect girl. But always fell short.
Her nana was her sanctuary, but she also insisted Brielle live by her calculations for love, believing they would keep her heart safe. And Brielle did.
Until now.
Now her heart is beating as if for the first time, and yearning for more than 'good enough'. In the space of one moment, her nana's calculations disappear, and the one man she shouldn't have, becomes a dangerous desire . . .one that leads her into temptation.
A temptation that could ultimately prove too much for a single heart to contain.
A long time ago, in a galaxy far away, I was born into a family of Star Wars nuts. I have a lot of siblings (somewhere I lost count but I think there was more than could be numbered on one hand) and being one of the young padawans I was subjected to Star Wars marathons, on a regular basis. If you've read any of my books you'll see there is often a reference to said movies as a small homage to my upbringing. May the force be with you and all that jazz.
I started writing when I realized I didn't want to grow up not believing in magic, or not believing in creatures everyone else said didn't exist. That being said, I have never seen a fairy, unicorn or dragon. I had a neighbour who swore they fed the leprechauns in their garden, but I never caught the little buggers no matter how long I lay in wait. (And consequently had to help the neighbours plant new flowers to replace those I killed waiting for the leprechauns to show their faces.)
Along the way, I found my husband who is the rock that keeps me from floating away into my dreams, and we have a little boy who is the centre of our world. Living on a farm keeps us busy (as if the writing wasn't enough) and I have more than my share of stories about wrestling with cows, helping birth calves and ending up in the creek during the process, falling in the mud (we'll call it mud but we all know that on a farm, mud is rarely mud) and chasing escaped livestock in the hopes the four legged convicts don't make it to the highway.
I've taken up archery, and the goal is to move into horseback archery in time (you know, when I can hit the target on a consistent basis) and when no one is looking, I love to bake (this doesn't happen often as it's hard to keep the sweet treats in stock with two boys in the house.)
As to what's coming next for me? More stories (since those never stop inside my head, I might as well share them with all of you!) and more adventures. Pretty much, when the fancy strikes, I'll jump on it. Leap before you look I'm sure that motto was created for me.
Or was that . . . think big and dream bigger, ready, set, pull the trigger . . . yeah. That one is a good one too. But only if you have a gun. And are hunting elephants. Which is not cool because of so many reasons. Let's stick with the first one with an addendum.
Leap before you look and let your dreams carry you on their wings. And that, my friends, is me in a nutshell.
I rarely give a synopsis of the plot since it's usually listed under the book title, so why repeat? In this case, it's so vague, I'll add some details. Ninety Eight covers two years in the life of Brielle, a young veterinarian assistant. She gets engaged to Vincent, Mr. 65% Right since her nana told her when she was 16 that it is better to settle than look for Mr. 98% Right. (True love apparently burned nana. We find out some details later, but it's never really explained.) The story continues on from there. This is the novel part of the book, in most romances the grandmother or other supporting character (Penny, Brielle's best friend)tells the heroine to wait for Mr. Perfect or the heroine is already looking for Mr. Perfect.
I enjoyed the writing, it flowed well and read fast. I liked some of the characters, but I had problems with Brielle. We're not sure quite how old she is, either 23 or 26. It mentions that 7 years ago when she was 16 her nana gave her the letter to settle for a good man, then it says she's read the letter every year for 10 years except the last 2. Brielle just accepts her nana's decree without apparently giving it any thought. We are told that basically her nana raised her because her mother focused on her new husband and that Brielle had poor prior relationships before Vincent, but at 23 or 26, how many serious relationships could she have had since she's been with Vincent for 2 years at that point? So, that is the basis for her falling in with nana's POV. I just couldn't accept it with an employed woman living in a city in this century and having a friend like Penny.
She is a people pleasing doormat. We understand that she is beaten down in a way from her mother's benign neglect and her step father's verbal and occasional physical (but not sexual after she at least nipped that in the bud)abuse as a teen. But as Brielle mentions in the book, she is now an adult. So, it's time for her to stand up for herself. Of course she finally does so, but ultimately, in the end of the book, for whatever altruistic reason, she reverts back to her doormat ways even though, as an adult, she should know there are other means to help the situation than give up what she wants.
From the cover, I was expecting the heat level to be higher in this book, but there were only 2 sex scenes, both were quite mild and not very descriptive. Not a criticism of the writing but of the cover, I read and enjoy all heat levels.
I was given a copy of this book for an honest review.
This was a really interesting concept for a story, I've read quite a few 'triangle' books where the female was married but never where the male was. Its honestly not so much of a triangle, its about two people who fall in love, who just happen to be in other relationships. Brielle is engaged to Vic, and Darwin is married to Fiona. This is where the concept of the book is really good Darwin and Brielle form a friendship even though they know, and so do the readers that its so much more than that. There's ups and downs and twists and turns in the story, its a will they won't they? and then you get an OMG moment at about 50% in. And that's where things went a little over the top for me, the new character of Micah is introduced, and I guessed immediately his connection to Darwin, and that was OK, but it Fiona and the continuing power that she seemed to have over everyone, not to mention the dreams, honestly I thought Brielle if I was you just give the hell up! It ended well, it was well written 3.5 stars for me.
ARC Review – I received an advanced copy of this amazing book (and finished it very late that same day)
I’m not sure where to start with my review of this book (which is why it's taken me so long to write it) – The emotional roller coaster that is the plot of this book had me laughing, crying and at times wanting to throttle Brielle’s mother (a woman that doesn’t deserve the title at all). Through it all, I could not put the book down. By the time I thought things might have a chance to work out I realized that the story was only at the half-way mark. Then there is that sharp drop in the roller coaster ride that leaves your stomach about 100 feet above your body and I had to know just how things would recover.
Brielle bases her entire love life on what she thinks is sage advice from her grandmother. Nana basically raised Brielle to have a jaded view on love, there is no happy ever after, it’s best to settle for the best you can do which is “good enough”. No use is trying to find anyone better than that.
With a kicked to the head (literally) Brielle finds herself in uncharted depths, uncharted emotional turmoil and desire. The heart-wrenching nature of how bad things can be when you settle and then Mr. Right walks into your life for you to find out that he’s Mr. 98% Right.
If you enjoy heart-wrenching romance, that heart-aching feel of love that shouldn’t be mixed in with a woman realizing that settling for 60% isn’t good enough when it comes to love – This book is perfect!
If you like tame, same ol same ol there aren’t any really huge problems to overcome romance books – this may be a bit too much of a roller coaster ride for your emotions. But, really, Life isn’t life until you have that thrill – I so recommend this book; I plan to read it again (box of tissues closer by this time)
My pet peeves – both my own personal issues ;) The book is in first person, not my favorite writing style. But I know that’s just me. The writing is very well done and after a while I had pushed that little 'first-person' issue completely out of mind (something about getting completely engulfed by the story does that)
This is my first Contemporary Story from Shannon Mayer, I had read her other paranormal works before so a part of my mind kept waiting for something paranormal to work its way in. I managed to shush that voice but had it creep back towards the end when Brielle was having her dreams. I believe the dreams added to the story and worked well given what was happening in the plot.
Minor Spoiler below: YES, there is a Happy Ending (I was worried about that part way through the book, and I so dislike books that don’t have happy endings). It’s perhaps not the ending some may want, but I found it very satisfying given everything happening. I was so very happy to have read this book! And will do so again
Ok i will not lie i was torn up with this book i laughed and cried and cursed it till i finished it!!! I totally loved the story line and i could relate to how we are told how to act and how to not follow our dreams and childhood fantasies of love and the future... I love Darwin and BRiele and Micah... Love is never easy and this story puts it out there for you to grab ahold of and just go for it!! There were times i wanted to give up reading it dues to the thought of Briele giving up And not follow her heart. I loved Pennys nickname for Victor.. I will not give away spoilers but this is a definite read and i am not usually a romance romance type of reader but i held my attention throughout the book!!!
Oh. My. God. This was one of the best love stories I've ever read. I never cry when I read books but this one did a number on me...I laughed and I cried. I was happy, angry and sad. I stayed up till 4:30am because I couldn't put this book down. Once I got to a certain point, I had to keep reading. I recommend this book to all contemporary romance fans.
*I received an ARC copy from the author in exchange for a review*
I enjoyed this book by Shannon. This book includes passion, laughs, heartache, grief, and betrayal.
This is NOT a sweet romance so if you are looking for that this book is not for you!!
There are times in this book you will feel as if you are in a storm of emotions and that the hail in that storm is coming down hard. Just when you think you have your emotions under control Shannon hits you with more torment and frustration. The twists, turns, grief and suffering seem as if they will never end. Keep the tissues handy as you will need them….
Brielle McGraw believes what her Nana told her years ago. She should settle for someone that is “good” guy. Based on a percentage system they made up. So she is living with a guy she thinks she loves but really does she?
After being injured on a farm by a horse hoof to the head she is taken to the hospital by a paramedic named Darwin Alexander who sits with her for hours awaiting the arrival of her boyfriend who was in a meeting and since she was not dying decided to wait until after to work to pick her up.
As her and Darwin who is married spend more and more time together they grow closer. They are both attracted to each other but do not act on those feelings.
When Brielle gets engaged to Victor who is all wrong for her you wonder why? Her treats her like a doormat and tells her she is immature. Still she does not cancel the wedding. She is in love with Darwin but going to marry Victor as Darwin is taken….
As the book goes on there is tragedy and suffering. There are times that you wonder really why does Brielle let the people that treat her so bad stay in her life. Will Brielle ever get her life together and be whole? Or are just pain, suffering, and grief in her future?
Found myself disgusted by quite a few people in this book. Totally disliked Victor (his whole attitude toward Brielle and her feelings just pissed me off. I so wanted to smack him a certain points), Fiona (she was high strung and manipulated everyone around her), and Brielle’s parents, her mother (Seemed like she never really cared about Brielle), and her step father (He was just a jerk and she really should have put him in his place at some point in the book).
This was too much soap opera drama for me. It read like a soap opera or a Lifetime Channel movie that Jennifer Love Hewitt should be starring in.
And I really like this author's Rylee Adamson series. So I really wanted to enjoy this book. With the synopsis, I thought "numbers" were going to play a bigger part in the story. Brielle the heroine mentions a few times about how Victor, her live-in boyfriend who becomes her fiance, was a 65%. What does that mean? That's all you really get. And I didn't care for the philosophy of life that Nana has handed Brielle. It was like, "Just accept what you can get because that's all you can hope for." Brielle mentions that Nana would love Victor because he's a good guy. Victor is a jack-hole. What...because he's not a drunk or beats on Brielle, makes him a good guy? He was selfish and a jack-hole. The only two male characters in this story who aren't jack-holes are the two men that Brielle falls in love with. Heck...the only female character who isn't a total twit is...well, no one. Brielle wasn't always the most likable. Penny's not too bad. But she doesn't show up much.
The story in a nutshell. Brielle is making do in life. Enters Darwin. Love at first sight. Darwin is married. To a twit who trapped him into marriage. Emotional affair ensues. Darwin tragically dies. Brielle is devastated. Leaves on a backpack trip through Europe with token perky and sassy best friend, Penny. Comes back to attend the twit's 2nd wedding. (yes...Darwin's widow. odd.) Meets Micah. Love at first sight. Again. Guess what? Micah was really sick and happened to be an exact match to Darwin and received Darwin's heart!!!! SOAP OPERA! More drama ensues as Fiona, the twit and Darwin's widow was pregnant with little Darwin when Darwin was killed. Micah is like a father to Darwin as Micah works at the horse farm that Fiona's parents' own. Adult Darwin starts showing up in Brielle's dreams asking her to "Save me" or something like that. Fiona has already tried to trap Micah into a marriage. Blah blah blah. Yada Yada Yada. More drama. Finally Brielle and Micah get to be together and she gets her 100%. Whatever that means.
Too much drama for me. I would recommend this author's other books. The Rylee Adamson series is good. This story didn't work for me.

Since I was the copy editor on Shannon Mayer‘s newest contemporary romance Ninety-Eight, I can’t exactly review it on Amazon, but I did on my website and can on Goodreads. The reason I’m doing this is because you have to read this book. I’m not kidding. In fact, I’m demanding you read this book. I have never before had a book pull so much emotion out of me. It’s sweet, funny, heart-wrenching, warm, and soul searching. And it has one helluva plot twist that I will absolutely not give away, but trust me, you’ll want to wring the author’s neck. I *almost* bought a ticket to Canada.
Smiles. Laughter. Bliss.
Coffee and donuts.
Pain. Heartache. Tears.
All of these things are associated with love. That’s right, L-O-V-E.
Ninety-Eight is a powerful story that entails Brielle’s quest for true love–a love she doesn’t think exists because her nana told her so. As she’s about to marry Mr. Good Man, whom I’m debating really is good because I don’t think he is, the reality of true love smacks her upside the head–literally–and Darwin walks into her life. But, there’s a hitch…he’s married. So the question really is, what if you actually found your true love, but s/he was untouchable because neither of you are willing to become the “other”? This story is about Brielle learning that true love exists, the power it holds, and the sheer torture of having it right in front of you, but out of reach.
I can’t tell you anymore because it’ll give away a good chunk of the book, but I will tell you that I related to Brielle more than any other character written by an author, and I think you will too.
My star rating system: 1=hated it, 2=disliked it, 3=liked it, 4=really liked it, and 5=loved it
I give this novel 5 stars because it took me on an emotional roller coaster ride and threw me for a loop. It’s not your typical contemporary romance novel, so don’t expect the regular old formula of girl meets boy, but there’s an obstacle in the way or a journey they have to undertake together before they finally get their happily ever after. Ninety-Eight is anything but that formula, but it’ll keep you reading, and I promise you, my darling minions, it is so worth the emotional turmoil.
This book is a story about a woman, her family issues and her belief that 100% love doesn't exist. Brielle has a distant and unloving mother, a cruel step father and a clueless fiancé. Brielle believes that the best that she should hope to find is a man that meets 60% of her needs because that's what her Nana told her. This story is about Brielle's journey to learn to love herself and to find love that is more than 60%.
I enjoyed reading about Brielle's journey. The writing was good. The main characters were flawed but grew and changed over the course of the story. At first I was concerned with the amount of repetition but it was deliberate and a part of the story.
On the surface this is a straightforward contemporary romance. I will give fair warning to any potential readers that there is a little paranormal woo woo in the form of Brielle "dreaming" answers to some of her issues. That didn't bother me but I know it doesn't appeal to all readers.
I was disappointed that 18 months of Brielle's journey took place off the page. Also, some of the side characters were more caricature than character. Brielle's best friend is depicted in the early portion of the book through the lens of her parents but then seems to do a 180 later in the story with no real explanation. Also, there is a suggestion early on that Brielle's fiancé is abusive but then that storyline goes no where. Honestly, I kept waiting for something big to happen. This isn't that kind of story.
Overall, the positives outweighed the weaknesses for me. I found myself wanting to find the time to read to see what would happen next. Yes, there were a few times I slapped my forehead because of a twist or turn but for the most part I enjoyed it. In the end there is a Happily For Now because I can imagine the crazy train continuing.

***** I received this book as a gift in exchange for an honest review *****
Wow OMG I just finished reading this book and I love it, I have to say that this story made me Angry, made me Cried, and made me Laugh but I love every single second of it, I like how this story turned out to be even though it was a different from what I am used to reading.
Reading this book had me in an emotional roller coaster never knew if the next line that I read would made me happy, sad, angry, or feel like throwing my lap top to the other side of the room. I read this book in one day I just couldn't put it down, love the characters even though some of them I couldn't stand them not cause the way they where but cause of what they did.
The story begging with Brielle now Brielle work for a vet as an assistant, they always going to farm by farm the last farm that they need to make stop was the farm that Fiona owns, Fiona is wealthy and manipulate and always get what she wants, while checking one of the horse something happened and Brielle end up getting hurt, and that's is all that it took, let me just put it like this one animal, one moment and One Critical Impact and her world turned up side down, that's how she met Darwin now Darwin.
From the moment that Darwin and Brielle met they started to hang out and they form a friendship, they became best friends and from their something stronger was growing between them two, while nothing really cant happened between them, I cant really say anything else because I don't want to give nothing away.
But I could say this was a BEAUTIFUL LOVE STORY THAT I HAVE READ SO FAR.
Just wanted to say Thank you to Author Shannon Mayer for introducing me to this amazing characters and this awesome love story. I hope that once you get to read it that you get to enjoy it and love it as much as I did
Ninety Eight shows a perfect example of how all advice given, even by those we dearly love, should be taken with that "grain of salt" and just what differences there are between settling for beige or going for the full color. Brielle is a young woman who has been broken. Even after living with her Nana and receiving the love she yearned for growing up, her Nana passes. She leaves Brielle one last letter, which Brielle takes to heart and this changes the course of her life coloring all of her future life choices. The writing was clean with the world building very believable and well done. There were characters I absolutely loved and those I loved to hate just itching to throw a cold bucket of water over their heads just to imagine the reactions. There were wonderfully emotional ups and downs and the resolution of the tale was very satisfying. If I had any complaints they would be about the frustrating times I wanted to smack Brielle upside the head and tell her to wise up, but then isn't that all part of the storytelling process. Overall Ninety Eight was a wonderful romance with laughter and tears and I would recommend it for those looking for a romantic read with an emotional journey. I received this book from the author with a request for my honest review without any compensation whatsoever, other than the joy of reading a new book.
So regretfully I have to admit that I read this some time and it has taken me fooorever to finally figure out how I felt about what I read. Let me first that this is my second encounter with Ms. Mayer’s work and since I was rather impressed the first time around I figure I would experience the same enjoyable...well that didn’t exactly happen.
Brille is going through life just settling. And its for no good reason. Its not like she’s married and has children.. So in my mind its like whyyyyyy are you doing this to yourself. Why are you planning on marrying a guy that it borderline ewww to just ok. For whatever reason her discontentment in life bothered me beyond words. To makes all matters more uggghhh its somewhat her grandmother’s fault. Who tells a young girls that you should settle...that’s just wrong on so many levels.I would want not only my girls, but my son’s as well to find that person that makes up what they lack. To make them whole. To be that one person that the would rather not live without. I just feel like settling should not be an option, especially if you don’t have any true times.
Throughout Ninety Eight I notice that Brille wasn’t the only one that was settling in a lackluster relationship. Darwin who by accident (literally) becomes that one person that makes Brille some kind of way. I even found myself getting caught up and lines became blurry when it came to those two. Than tragically everything change. Tears were cried. Hearts were broken.
Just when Brille thought she could possibly not see the light of day, she meets Micah. He filled her up the same ooey gooey feeling the Darwin was able to provide. Things between these were intense, and after a short while it seemed that fate had something against Brille’s happiness. Luckily her world finally righted itself and she was able to have everything she needed and not settle.
Overall Ninety Eight was very entertaining and kept my attention, the only drawback for me was Brille’s need to settle in life.It secretly (well its not so much of a secret) annoyed me. As far as recommending this its really hard to say I think you have to be in the mood for this to enjoy it.
I love Shannons' Rylee Adamson series, she's a fabulous paranormal writer but I wasn't so keen on her first contemporary novel, and wondered if maybe the genre change just didn't suit for me. Still, its always good to try more than once so read this one, the second contemporary romance and... it just blew me away. Of course being a horse fanatic it had the edge right from the start with horses and the horse world having a solid part to play. Its nothing like most of the contemporary romance currently around, very different set up and execution – I can think of just one other I’ve read that follows this format. Its a plot that works only if skilfully done, and could so easily put the reader off, but Shannon makes it work perfectly despite my reservations when I saw what was happening. So, this book. Where did it differ from book one for me? Well, the characters to begin with – they're so real, I felt like I knew them, as if we were friends and there were so many contrasting characters that it led to a really well rounded mix just as we'd find in real life. Kind people, jealous, people, real bitches and simply people who we love and want the best outcome for. The story takes us on a roller-coaster ride, with plots the leave the reader feeling high, giddy with joy and delighted one moment, and on the edge of tears the next. The story left me breathless, wondering just how all the plots could come together – just how on earth they could be resolved, and then – horrors -I began to get the feeling it would be another damn cliffhanger, as I simply couldn’t see how on earth Shannon could resolve all the problems and blocks she'd created – but she did! And it was a fantastic finish. Its a great book, one I’d re read and savour slowly next time, instead of rushing to see what's going to happen. That me, I’m so impatient sometimes I have to read the end before the beginning!! I'm one of those people who loves to re read books so knowing what's going to happen doesn't spoil it for me – it lets me enjoy the journey, instead of focussing on the climax. Speaking of which there were some hot and steamy moments here, but it fitted the scenes perfectly.
Stars: loved it, will join my keepers shelf and gets a resounding five from me. ARC supplied by author.
"I don't think love is ever wrong, even if it hurts, even if it scared you. You learn from it, become a better person, use what you've learned for the next time around."
Brielle has a rating system for the guys shes with because her grandma's parting words. They were about not finding her soul mate or the perfect guy, she would be lucky to get a guy who is at least 60% perfect for her and she should accept it. Which made Victor a perfect candidate for her being at 60%. When Brielle was in an accident the EMT who helped her, Darwin, pretty much captured her heart and that when she started to put him on the rating scale. Darwin managed to score higher on the scale than Victor was. Perfect match for her Right? She should ditch Victor and be with Darwin Right? Wrong, Darwin is married and she is on her way to going down the isle with Victor. As their connection between each other grows something they can't deny the unthinkable happens.
"Everybody makes mistakes. Then don't ruin your life unless you let them. Rachael let them ruin her life. Don't let your mistakes ruin yours. They don't define you; they make you grow the fuck up,"
This is a story of love loss and finding love again. Sheesh poor Brielle can't catch a break. She has a sucky Mum and stepfather, the parent figure she did love, her grandmother, dies and things just cant seem to go right. Brielle did at times seem annoying but trying to understand her character I can get why she was that way. I loved how supportive and caring her best friend was. I loved the connection between Brielle and the guys. (I didn't wanna kill the book by saying who but I did love the connection between her and the guys.) Trust me when I say this is one of those books you going to want a couple hours cleared for. I finished this book within a day and I loved the book.
This is the second story I've came across by Shannon Mayer and I absolutely loved. This book is heart breaking and heart warming and your going to want to get your hands on this book. Highly recommend you lovely readers check it out. 5 of 5 Stars!
** I received an ARC, in exchange for an honest review.**
Well, personally is the first time I read a book by Shannon Meyer, did not know what to expect from this book, the synopsis was only hhabia read in one of the events I had and a cover page with a title peculiar Ninety-eight .
The synopsis speak of numbers, but what he meant to them, Well one afternoon I grabbed my lap and started reading this book, in the known history of Brielle, a girl who has a job as a vet assistant and a boyfriend which she considers a man who enters the higher percentage standard with which his life may not be 100% happy but you will have peace and security. And love?
Brielle has a history of looking for that kind of happiness, and family environment does not help much for her to find someone to fill it with happiness and love. But … that education, instilled thoughts and ideas about life will see truncated and broken thanks to Darwin.
Ninety-eight, I think is a good percentage to look Brielle and in your equation includes love. Your starting life that meets Darwin change and this is where it starts growing as a character, perhaps in some places not connected with her, but comprehended their situation. Including the other characters. Also this is where your feelings could be a swirl. And that swirl bring more surprises on the way to our protagonist and for us readers moments and unexpected situations.
It is easy to read, very cool and has a very clear idea about what it means contemporary romance. We are flooded with many feelings, many doubts, many moments that make this book highly recommended for something girl looking for love, you already have or are in love with him.
Look for it, enjoy it and now that Christmas is approaching, what better than an afternoon with a reading romance, a delicious coffee and a box of tissues.

I really wanted to like this book, I love Shannon's Rylee series but I didn't warm to this book and I had a strange feeling that I had read this book or maybe seen a similar film before. I even held off posting this review hoping I would feel more positive with some perspective.
Brielle has been told by her Nana that there is no such thing as "The One" and looking for him could only lead to unhappiness. Better to settle for someone who is 65% perfect, or perfect 65% of the time. So Brielle has settled for Vic, a cheapskate boyfriend who makes Brielle pay for half of everything even though he is a soon-to-be-partner in an accountancy firm and she is a vet's assistant.
When Brielle is kicked in the head by a horse a hunky Paramedic called Darwin turns up - they feel an instant connection and become fast friends. But Darwin is married, and to the owner of the horse which kicked Brielle!
Brielle and Darwin reminded me of the two leads in the film "Cousins". Both too nice for their own good and being taken advantage of by their respective other halves. Yet they have standards and morals. As a result of which Brielle never seemed to stop crying. Page, after page, after page crying for this, crying for that.
Then there is the twist, which also reminded me of a film I've seen before - but I won't say which one. This was just one example of coincidence in the book and I felt that there were too many coincidences in the book and it just felt forced.
My views seem to be in the minority, feeling disappointed in the book - others loved it.
I recommend it for those who love stories of true love being thwarted by circumstances.
This was quite a love story. You have a woman who bases her judgment of the man meant for her on a letter left to her by her nana on settling for someone who is 60% as Nana says there is no one out there to make your heart go pittypat, no one who will give you tingles, it's better to settle for a "good" man. You have her mother who is NO kind of mother at all (who chooses a mean man over her own kid? Her mom DISGUSTS me). And you watch as Brielle is seemingly about to ruin her life.
He's married, she's engaged, and it all started with a swift kick to the head, literally. You will run the gamut of emotions while reading this book. I went from disgusted to frustrated to hopeful to pining to annoyed to angry to heart-aching to heart-wrenching to hopeful...it just doesn't stop! There's a HEA somewhere in this story, but you'll have to read to find out as I don't want to give away a thing! :)
Thank you to the publishers and author for an early review copy. I was not compensated in any way for this review, nor did receiving the copy for free affect my review. I genuinely liked this book! If you like poignant, sweet romances that will wrench you through emotions, you should totally buy this book!
So I was lucky enough to get an Advanced Reader Copy of Shannon Mayer's latest romance. Let me just say that I read this book from start to finish, only taking a break to wipe tears from eyes. Emotional highs and lows, laughter and tears. A tale that I identified with, characters that I want to meet. I love to read, but Ninety-Eight is a story that will draw you and and then stay with you long after the last page. What an incredible journey this story took me on. I don't want to say anything specific, I don't want to spoil this for anyone.....but I can tell you this book comes highly recommended. Every book of Ms. Mayers' that I read is so very different from the last. Other than the books in a series, every single story is unique, and Ninety-Eight is very special in so many ways. Even if you have read every single offering she has produced, do NOT miss this book. I am in awe of the depth of her talent, and I believe we are just scratching the surface with the books she has out to date. I anticipate many years of great reads from this author.
I really did want to love this book but I just couldn't get into it. I believe it's because Brielle and I just don't mesh well. I didn't have the same love for the characters as I do in the Rylee series. They didn't draw me in or make me want to know more about their pasts. I understood why Brielle cared what her nana thought but I can't fathom going so far as to marry a man you don't love; he wasn't even providing any benefits other than being her "boyfriend/fiance". Why stay with him? Why even begin dating him never mind marriage if there's no love, support, or passion? I saw no connection. I wanted to fall in love with Darwin but it was such a turn off the way he spoke about his wife. If he really thinks so little of her, why settle? I just could not connect with any of the characters. It was a lot of "smh".
I did, as always, love Shannon's writing style and the speed in which she tells her stories. While I didn't care for this title, I do recommend Shannon Mayer's other series. She's my fav.

Wow…just wow..ummm..yeah I am completely speechless! I cannot even think what to write in this review. I guess the only thing I can say to start is that was the best book I have ever read! This book took me on a roller coaster ride and I don’t think I will ever get off! This book has been branded on my heart and soul. Shannon Mayer is a wonderful author but this book is DEFINITELY by far her best! WOW…This book made me laugh, cry, made me angry, sad, happy and just about any emotion you can think of. Definitely be sure you clear out a block time to read it as you will literally NOT be able to put it down. It has twists and turns that will leave you breathless! Shannon Mayer, you have rocked my world with this book!!!!!
When I first began to read "ninetyeight" thought, "OK, here's a nice little common romance." Boy was I wrong! It was better than "nice", it was an emotional roller coaster.
Started out being a little mad about the situation Brielle is in. That soon turned to uneasiness with it then "BAM" I'm cheering her on. And then I'm hit with another "BAM" and the cheers turn to stomach clinching sorrow. I'm beginning to think at this point, "how the heck is Mrs. Mayer's going to write her way out of this mess and keep me happy at the same time?!?!" Well she does it quite nicely, thank you.
Believe me from the "stomach clinching sorrow" point to the end of the book it's not an easy ride but well worth the trip.
Very enjoyable read with lots of twists and turns. Would recommend "ninetyeight" to anyone that likes a well written book with believable characters.
When I found this book, I had no idea what to expect. The summary was vague as hell (and now I understand why!) But because of it's "vague-ness" I read the amazon ratings, which were all 4 and 5 stars, but they all said the same thing, "emotional rollercoaster" and so I was sold and had to find out what that rollercoaster consisted of. OMG You guys! You guys!!! I was not expecting what happened to have happened! I was utterly thrown again and again, surprised, shocked, devastated! And as those feelings swept through me, I thought, wow, what an absolute treasure of a book because I was just not expecting it, ANY OF IT!!! The way this book threw me off, made me feel and the fact that I got it for only $.99 - this book is worth way more!!! Emotional, crazy read. So, so good!!! Memorable. Unforgettable. Heartbreaking. Loved it all!!!
ARC Copy in exchange for review (although I would have bought a copy too as I love Shannon Mayer) Seriously.. 99 cents as of October 17, 2013 it is so worth $1
Well, who would have thought? This book surprised me a couple of times. I started off sad for the girl because who really wants to live like that. Then thoughts moved to incredulous, unbelievable, DID THAT REALLY HAPPEN! Back to sad, then happy, then sad... you get the idea. This book is mostly about real life relationships not the story book kind(prince saves princess, happily ever after with a dose of action)It has real emotions, ones you feel when you love someone.I would, and will recommend this book to contemporary romance fans...and everyone on my friend list. Oh yea, The cover is freakin awesome! Amazing art, I love it

Wow. Just wow. This book was full of surprises. This is the story of Brielle and how she's been living her life following her nana's rules. The entire time I was reading I had a little hitch in my heart. I cried with Brielle when she cried and cried for her when she couldn't. When she was happy, I was happy. I honestly had no idea what direction the story was going to take. Every time I thought I knew, something would happen to surprise me. There were so many moments when I stopped breathing or threw my hand up to my mouth and was like, "noooo!" This was an amazing read.

Although I found this book to be really well written & a real page turner I'm not sure if I enjoyed it. . . It was almost too much of an emotional roller coaster. How much bad advice, bad luck & horrible, manipulative people surrounding them can one person have? With all of that mess influencing her Brielle has to decide whether to settle or to follow her heart. To put everyone else's happiness before her own. The ensuing story will make you smile, sigh & cry as well as make you mad as hell. You may or may not enjoy it, but it will take you on the ride of your life!
What an emotional ride. It was very good. It really had everything; happiness, humor, heartbreak, mistrust, distrust. Good guys and bad guys and a little innocent. You laughed, you cried, and you even wanted to hit the bad guys and the idiots. It’s a definite warm tale, about fighting for what you deserve and not settling for anything else. It’s one of those books you can’t put down and you root for the main character to get everything they deserve. Sometimes you just have to take a little advice and go on faith that everything will be alright. So if you get a chance to check it out, do so. You definitely, won’t be disappointed.

This book was so emotionally gut wrenching. It took me through the whole spectrum of emotions. I laughed and cried. I think I even threw my kindle at one point. It is just so captivating and beatiful I could not put it down! You think you know whats going to happen but there is just so much to this story. I dont want to say anything to spoil a moment of it. This one just grips you and sticks with you for days.
