Cursed: Night Of Power

Rate this book
"Night of Power" is the first installment of the Cursed series- Young Adult novels that deal in the supernatural. Each book introduces new characters, supernatural elements, challenges and story arcs - then mix in some danger, some making out, lots of humor... oh yeah, and then there's the fact that someone or something is CURSED - and that is never cool. "Night of Power" introduces Charlotte (Charlie to her friends) and Jason- two teens who were all set for their final "normal" year of high school until someone tries to open a portal of death and destruction and now it's up to them to face off with a REALLY mean lady (who is hell bent on world domination), take out all her minions and still have a social life. Along for the ride are Gwen, Charlie's BFF, Jester, the class clown and two mysterious foreign exchange students. Breaking curses has never been this much fun!

MJ has been writing stories since she learned her ABC's. Her first work of fiction was a play she wrote in 3rd grade that she then forced each member of her family to perform (they loved it). She continued writing short stories about her friends at school which were reenacted on the playground at recess. She was an avid reader as well and dreamed of being an author one day (as well as a fashion designer and marine biologist). When she realized how much math was involved in becoming a biologist, she focused on writing and drawing. Fashion lost it's appeal when she realized it's way more fun to just make stuff up all the time. Cursed: Night of Power is her first completed novel (and first in a series of six). She loves all things supernatural and mysterious- and loves her some good sci-fi, too. She LOVES to travel and no matter where she goes, the first thing she does is take a ghost tour!

This isn't your typical vampire story. In a paranormal obsessed world, MJ gives us a different take on the supernatural. She shows us that all vampires are not the same. I loved all the characters, but Jester and Gwen were my favorite. I love the attention she gives to the detail of all of Jester's t-shirt sayings, and his funny quips. It was great how he and Gwen play off each other. And I laughed out loud during the Homecoming dance. Gwen sounds like my kind of girl. And the relationship between Jason and Charlie is sweet and perfect-I was cheering for them the whole time.

I was looking for a good read and found it here. Filled with smart and funny characters, this book takes a fun, almost cheeky look at teenage vampires. Think back to the dark days of Christopher Pike before vampires could sparkle. It is a great story of friends, monsters, and a sexy but psycho villain in small town America. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in the supernatural, vampires, monsters, magic, teen reads, and lots of humor. I actually laughed out loud. Good stuff.

What sets this book apart from others is the conversational writing style of Ms. Bryson and her unique view of the supernatural. You may begin reading this book with the thought, "I know all about vampires so this will be so-o predictable." Wrong! Night of Power's vampires have abilities unlike previous vampires in history. I liked learning a whole new set of supernatural rules. I had questions and they weren't all answered, leading me to want that next book to come out right now!
