Sorcerer Rising begins the story of Virgil McDane. Once he was a powerful Wizard, an explorer, scholar, and soldier. Outcast from the Wizard’s Guild, stripped of his power and relegated to a lowly Sorcerer, he finds himself more and more desperate.
His world is much like our own, only magic is an everyday occurrence. The greatest resource is Aether, patches of raw magic that spawn whole dimensions. Forged from emotion and thought, the possibilities held within these worlds are endless. Some are featureless nightmares, others whole planets filled with their own people, magic, and culture.
Only expert mages can extract these otherworldly resources from the mist, namely the Wizards with their global Guild, or Sorcerers, rogue mages powerful enough to work the Aether.
Now, a unique phenomenon has provided Virgil with the chance he needs. The Arcus, a column of light and energy that stretches half the world, has landed just outside his home city. Cyrus Aberland, millionaire inventor, is funding an expedition, and with a vendetta against the Guild, he comes looking for a Sorcerer who can do the job.
Now Virgil must guide a team of explorers halfway across the world, protect them and himself against the dangerous arcane threats of the world, and reclaim his power.
Nathan Sisk currently resides just south of Memphis, TN with his lovely wife and amazing son. There are also two dogs, but that was a package deal with the wife, so don't ask. He is an avid consumer of all things magical and monstrous, is a rampant gamer, and devoted history buff.
Now, that was a frickin' awesome read. It was nowhere near what I thought it was going to be when I downloaded it. It defies any attempt to pigeonhole it into a genre. And I loved it. Any preconceptions you might have... this is going to blow them all to tiny bits of dust. Much the way Virgil tackles his ultimate nemesis. Which, by the way, was incredibly satisfying. I miss Tiffany. I wish the best for Sarah. I want Conrad to thrive. Most of all, I want to see Virgil continuing to kick ass through many subsequent novels.
And yeah, it took me a week to read. It's a big book with lots of intricate stuff going on in there, but none of it is a slog. It's action packed and you'll find yourself staying up later than you ought to, sneaking in time to read when you should be doing something else, and still having it take a while to read. It's worth it. Dive on in. Now I have to go slap my money down for the next book.
It was okay. That magic system isn’t all that interesting but the world building is pretty cool. The main character getting distracted by demon is annoying and unnecessary. Him being whinny is also annoying and didn’t need to span the entire book like it did.
What I normally read is space opera, then good SF then Fantasy, mostly in that order then occasionally a Author and book come along and I enjoy reading them to the utmost, what a start to a series I recommend it totally
