Everyone expects her to succeed...
Karen plays the cello like an angel, and it’s the only thing that makes her truly feel alive. But her father’s dream—for her to join a prestigious orchestra—leaves no time in her life for anything but music...not even love. Trapped on her path, she doesn’t know how to rebel.

Everyone expects him to fail...
Connor plays rock guitar like the devil himself, and his ability has got him all the way from a dead-end life in Belfast to a scholarship at Fenbrook Academy. But beneath his arrogance and charm, he doesn’t believe he has what it takes. He’s spent his time in New York drinking and partying, and the only future he sees is a return to Ireland as soon as he flunks out.

But what no one expects...
When Karen’s duet partner is injured, the bad boy guitarist and the shy, sheltered cellist are forced to team up. Neither likes the idea, but what begins as anger and distrust slowly spirals into love...and lust. If they can face up to their feelings, they might just have a chance together. If Connor will allow Karen to stop his fall, maybe he can show her a life she never thought possible...

Wow! Better than the first book in the Fenbrook Academy series! This author really stepped up to the plate!

Now, I'm super picky about my new adult books. The book market is just inundated with this genre, which is basically angsty, sex-ed up, college age stories. They are very often crap, which always makes me wary to try them. However, this book really surprised me with how good it was.

I'll try to break it down for everyone why I liked this story so much.

1)This book has a sense of humor. Sometimes authors seem to take their book way too seriously. You aren't writing the freaking bible, people. This book doesn't, which I adored. The author mocked a lot of stereotypes in a fun, lighthearted way.

2)The couple have real problems that don't magically go away. I was surprised to see that the couples from the first book are revisited here and we can see that their "happily ever afters" are not as straightforward as they originally appeared. The author wasn't afraid to show the characters as real, flawed people. It was pretty awesome.

3)For a long book, the pace was good. Clocking in at over 400 pages, this book could have been super boring and draggy. However, I had no problem keeping my interest zeroed in on the story at hand.

4)The author avoided easy outs. I kept waiting for the dreaded "miscommunications" and the like to crop up and spoil a good book. However, the author didn't use any of these tired plot tricks. **Praise the lord**

5)It was HOT. Steamy writing, definitely geared to an adult audience. I, for one, appreciated the extra sex content!

All in all, this book was a great read. I'll be on the look out for more books in this series, for sure.

Karen is an extremely introverted cello player and student at Fenbrook. Conner is a bad-boy-Irish-rock-star in training that she just doesn't understand. Circumstances beyond their control force them to work together despite their obvious differences.

The first book in the Fenbrook Academy series Dance For Me (Fenbrook Academy #1) by Helena Newbury was my favorite Summer read of 2013, so I had high expectations for this installment. I was not disappointed. I liked that Karen was kind of geeky, but still a pretty girl. I could totally understand Connor's attraction to her. The writer did a good job of introducing Connor as a bad boy, without making him douchey. This book was angsty without being overly depressing, which is a refreshing departure from most of the new adult books I've read lately. Karen is friends with the heroine from Dance For Me. Which means Natasha, Darrell, Clarissa, and Neil also make appearances throughout. Good news for anyone leery of starting an incomplete series; this book features a different couple. Which makes it very easy to follow without reading the previous book.

In Harmony is the second book in the Fenbrook Academy series and is a New Adult Contemporary Romance written by Helena Newbury. I received this eARC from the author in exchange for an honest review through Read Between The Lines .

4.5 Melodious, Dreamy Stars!
A Touching, Romantic, Sweet Story About Overcoming Your Fears, Finding Yourself and Realizing Your Worth!

The Review:
I freaking LOVED this book! I enjoyed book one, Dance For Me but this book is a huge step up in both story and writing. Told completely in the heroine’s POV, this well written story had connectable characters with substance and not just tragedy... and (excited air wave!) their was the slow build that I love in angsty romances. Yes, call me happy. I'm still floating around in my love bubble since finishing this one!

Story...
Karen Montfort is a senior cellist at Fenbrook Academy. She may be twenty-one, living amongst outgoing actors, musicians and dancers but she’s super shy and has been sheltered by a controlling, overbearing father that has her wound so tight, she feels suffocated and introverted and sometimes her stress causes panic attacks. Her dream of becoming a part of the New York Philharmonic is a goal she’s worked diligently towards since she was six years old but sometimes she doesn’t know if its her dream she’s reaching for or her fathers.

When Dan, her friend and partner for the upcoming recital that will either make or break her, ends up with a hurt arm and can no longer play, she must find the strength to convince the only other person who’s yet to pick a partner, bad boy Connor, whose reputation as a slacker is notorious, to help her or she’ll flunk out of Fenbrook, resulting in never playing for the New York Philharmonic and abandonment by her father. Her life is literally in Connor’s hands.

Connor Locke is a devil without a care. He’s an electric guitarist at Fenbrook on a scholarship and he’s living the high life, partying with a different girl every night. He’s riding the wave until the school kicks him out and he moves on to the next big adventure.

Electric guitars and cello’s don't mix, nor do the people or their lives who wield them, so when Karen asks for his help, knowing the hard work and difficulty involved, he laughs at her, but theres something in her desperation and her panic that makes him change his mind and he decides to try. But Connor is concealing a pretty massive secret that could ruin everything.. for both of them.

Characters...
Karen was a fantastic heroine. I really liked her and I liked her commitment. She worked hard and she had dreams. But she was also flawed in that she worked herself too hard and was never able to just relax. She’s surrounded by a fantastically wonderful group of friends but often feels alone and wandering. And though she still has the dreaded v-card, her innocence didn’t come off as “eye-rolling” (if not ridiculously funny at times). Considering her sheltered life, it was realistic. She also wasn’t opposed to self gratification which made for some interesting moments.

Karen grew significantly from beginning to end. She starts out timid, afraid to voice herself, afraid of her own actions and the consequences they might invoke. She’s a good girl through and through but by the end, she’s a force of nature. I actually wanted to stand up and cheer at the last few chapters. Seeing her come into her own was a beautiful thing! She saw her life being taken away and decided it was time to fix things. Connor being the most important.

*Swoooon* Wow, how I LOVED these two together!!!!

I loved Connor and his unique set of problems. Very rarely do you have a hero with the issues he has and still be the cocky alpha male who saves the day. He was sexy and smart and a little rough around the edges. He seemed conflicted and a bit overwhelmed at times but I loved how different his story was! The author did a fantastic job with him.

These two are an eclectic mix, opposites in every way possible. But throw them together and they completely even each other out. What starts out as a forced pairing, turns to an adorable friendship that inevitably turns to love even though the odds are stacked against them and outside influences try to tear them apart.

AND, the side stories were awesome! The whole cast from book one is back and each has something pretty daunting happening in their unsettled lives. Which leads me to my “troubles” section.

The Trouble with Continuations...
Natasha and Darrell’s story felt unfinished when I completed book one and in this story, we get to see them and what life is like after their story. It wasn’t pretty and in fact, it was a bit discouraging knowing their HEA was in jeopardy. I both loved and hated this glimpse into their continuing problems. I liked seeing them again and I'm glad we saw the “more” I wanted from book one but after getting so close to their characters and their POV’s, it just made me question getting their issues second hand through Karen. I’d almost prefer a novella or the second book dedicated to them.

And I guess I got spoiled in book one with having two POV’s because I would have loved to have been inside Connor’s mind while he was falling in love with Karen, while he watched her from afar and how he dealt with the return of his ex. I wanted to see those pivotal moments, like we did with Darrell from book one. Maybe if I beg hard enough, we’ll get a “his POV”? :D

Regardless of the “troubles”, it did NOT take away from the enjoyment of this story and all the love I have for it.

The Wrap Up:
All I can say is this book was fantastic and I absolutely can’t wait for book three, which I'm really hoping for. Jasmine still needs her story told! And I’d love to see the gang back and experience more of their lives, their friendships and know what their future holds.

What happens when the perfect girl needs the ultimate bad boy? Yay! This is one book I didn’t dare put down. I pinned for Karen, swoon at Connor and fell in love with the rest of the characters – I swear they would grow on you too!

Meet the perfect girl.
Karen – the pressure is on her to succeed. She plays like she was born with a cello on her hands. All she wanted since she was a little girl was to belong to the NY Philharmonic Orchestra. Her life was all about music: practicing and perfecting her skills. She had no time to date, to have a normal relationship, even friendships. She’s the ultimate good girl. Problem is – she couldn’t speak in front of a crowd. But no worries, she doesn’t need it to graduate. What she needs is to ace her recital. What she didn’t need is for her partner to break his hands and left her hanging with no one.

The Ultimate Bad Boy.
Connor – he was about to be kicked out. He was a genius when it comes to playing but he doesn’t seem to care in going to his classes. He plays like a god, smile like he owns the world and could charm anyone without even trying. He was her knight in shining armor, and he was always unexpectedly helping Karen when she needed him the most.

The Duet
Can they pull it off? She plays the cello, and he plays the guitar? Oh you’d be in for a surprise. Both of them proved that no matter how different and how mismatched their instruments might be, they could still be In Harmony (sounds cheesy! But it’s true!). The book didn’t have music in it – but once you get into the part where they are playing, you can feel and almost hear the rhythm out of your readers. It was a little creepy, and I found the hairs in my arms rising – but it had me in awe.

They have helped and changed each others in ways you never expect them to be. It was a great read. I love both characters and the secondary characters that surround them, Karen has great friends who loves her and wants what is best for her. We get to see some snippets of their lives and problems here too. Despite their imperfections – her friends are perfect for Karen. They complement her.

In Harmony is a story of two highly unlikely individual falling in love despite their differences.

I know there will barely something new in this kind of stories that have already told in a lot of contemporary NA books nowadays. Yet the blurb can still make me interested reading it. I did enjoy and like it, especially whenever Karen and Connor duet. Those scenes are interesting and I feel like I was there watching them playing violin and electric guitar.

However I felt the story kind of drag out and lose focus in some part. This is about Karen and Connor. And I know she has three best friends. They can be supporting characters to her story but if all of them have problems and need her attention at the same time in the same book, it's just too much and too coincidence to me. I know best friends do that but she said it herself that Natasha is closer to Clarissa than to her so why didn't Natasha ask Clarissa? Same case happens with Clarissa and Jasmine. Hence she always caught in the wrong place at the wrong time to solve her best friends' problem; . It's like suddenly her best friends have a very important things that need her so they come to her all together to ask her advice.

Karen naivety is also quite annoyed me, though I still think her shyness kind of adorable. But I liked Karen and Connor relationship and they really have chemistry in this book. Since I love love story with the opposite characters I will surely read another characters stories from this Fenbrook Academy series.

I am officially a fan of Helena Newbury's romance writing style. While there are tons of insta-love books out there, hers are a gradual romance that builds into a deeper love for each other. She takes characters that are polar opposites and meshes them together into one and I just love it.

Karen is a proper, innocent girl that has lived under her father's thumb for years. Living to please him, her goal is to play the cello in the New York Philharmonic Orchestra, because that is what he wants-not necessarily her. After an incident at her school in Boston, Karen is now enrolled at the elite Fenbrook Academy finishing up her senior year. To graduate she must compose and perform a piece of music with another student as a duo. Karen's violinist partner Dan gets injured and as a last ditch effort she approaches Connor for help.

Connor is the resident Irish bad boy of Fenbrook Academy, using his looks and charm to get by. He rarely attends class, however is a whiz at the electric guitar. Connor enjoys teasing Karen, he sees her as uptight and an easy target. Connor acts like he doesn't have a care in the world, when in reality he is keeping a secret from everybody. He agrees to help her graduate, cue the romance.

I love how it took months for these two to admit any feelings and even more time to act on them. Karen fawned over Connor in her mind, but kept up the front when she was around. She even had a pretty hot solo-scene of her own thinking about him. As they work on the music, they also work on expressing the feelings they have for each other. Karen and Connor learn to trust and help each other get to their goal of graduation.

Karen's friends are always there to help her along and in turn she helps them with the relationship problems they have. It was nice to see Karen grow and try new things with Connor's help and in return he learned that he didn't have to hide behind the bad boy persona anymore.

This is such a good series, I would say a non-traditional romance because it blossoms over time, they don't fall straight into bed. Just as in Dance For Me, these characters need each other to change, heal and move forward with their lives.

This is well written and everything wraps up nicely, something I love. In Harmony could be read as a stand alone, but I would recommend reading Dance For Me to get the gist on the supporting characters in this story as they are front and center. You can see the set up for the next series plain as day, the mis-matched Clarissa and Neil, rich girl and biker boy trying to carve out an normal relationship. Sign me up!

ARC kindly provided by the Author, Helena Newbury, in exchange for a review.

I loved Helena's first book in the Fenbrook Academy series (Dance for Me - review here: http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/...) and had been looking forward to further books in the series and so when she approached me and asked if I would like an ARC I had to say Yes Please!

In Harmony is a longer, grittier and more sexually explicit book and it blew my socks off! Focusing this time on Karen, a cellist who has spent her whole life dominated by her father, is a 21 year old virgin. Connor, a rough around the edges, electric guitarist who is on a full scholarship at the Academy from his home in Northern Ireland. Both have their problems (and as in Dance with Me, these are dealt with in a very sensitive, caring, manner) and are about as similar as chalk and cheese.

When Karen's partner breaks his elbow a couple of months before their final recital, a recital Karen needs to do well in to graduate and to impress the scout from the New York Philharmonic Orchestra, she is left with two options, find a new partner or don't graduate at all. As the second is not an option at all, she has to find a new partner.

Connor has partied his way through his years at Fenbrook, rarely showing up for classes and has no real intention of graduating, having seen his time there as an opportunity to spent some time New York and sleep with lots of girls. Connor is the only person who has not partnered up for the recital and Karen needs him in order to graduate.

What follows is as explosive and dynamic as the music they make together. As they discover each other's strengths and weaknesses they make sweet music and sweet love.

Inter-twined with all of this are the characters from the first book, who also have problems of their own. As Karen gains more self-confidence she tries to help them with their problems as well.

I found myself unable to put this book down, even falling asleep with my Kindle clutched in my hand! It is extremely well written and I can't wait for the next one in the series. I want to know if Jasmine gets her Cop, if Clarissa and Neil can work things out and if Darrell manages to bury his demons and live happily ever after with Natasha. So no pressure there then!

Thank you Helena for giving me the opportunity to read this book!

3.5 to 4 Stars (very long and detailed)
What happens when you put a cello player and a rock guitarist together.. sparks most definitely. Kinda with a balance of good and bad. As the first book, this one also a bit out of my genre of fav reading . A Cello player I think is playing for all the wrong reasons and the rock guitarist is better than he gives himself credit for.
Because of Ill just throw the word fate in here.. has a way of working into everyone's lives... Karen finds herself partnered with who she thinks doesn't belong at the academy. Oh but don’t worry for Connor he himself isn't real thrilled to be partnered to such a stuffy stiff female.
It was fun to see who would unnerve the other first. They both will do a whole lot of fighting the feelings.
I'm always for the bad boy, but Karen will endear herself to you. One cant live by just partying at some point one must grow up, the flip side of that coin is a person cant live such a ridged life not learning to
bend a little.
Even out of my norm of reading, I can say if you like sweet give it a shot I’m sure you will enjoy it.

By far my favourite book in the Fenbrook Academy series. I read them out of order so although this was the second in the series I read this one last. I love the idea of the main character being a cello player. I haven't come across that very much in other music based books I have read which is a big reason why the first main female character of my own music related series is a cello player, it always seems to be the more romantic sounding instruments in certain circumstances. I like how this author cleverly incorporated the shape of the instrument in one of the sex scenes. Conor also is my favourite of all the boyfriends we get to meet through the series. A bit of rough and ready bad boy always come out on top of the book boyfriend stakes for me. If you are looking for a new series to start to read I would say the Fenbrook Academy books are a worthy purchase. I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

This is the second book in the series. Loved it! Such a great story and I loved both Karen and Connor. This a good read and I give it 4 stars!

This was SO close to being a 5/5 for me. the first half was stellar and adorable. But the latter half had some logic-plot-holes that, while added a dramatic flare, dampened the flow. I guess you could say, it lost its harmony (sorry, I just had to throw the pun in there)

If you've been following my blog or me on social media sites, you'll be aware I have been geeking out over Miss. Newbury big time. I actually think I have another girl crush, I love when I meet new authors to obsess over!

Gosh where do I even begin? I loved Dance For Me, and couldn't wait to get started on Karen's story. I fell in love with all my favorite characters all over again, and met some gorgeous new ones. In Harmony was so much more, I can't really describe the 'more' but holy skittles was it amazing! I formed a love/hate relationship with Karen, one some level I could relate to her with the controlled life and shizz. But the scenes where she needed to stand up and be a good friend, well those were scenes I felt like strangling her. Don't get me wrong there was a lot of depth to her character, I understood her passion for music and how her Cello was really an extension of her. The sheltered and controlled life making her insecure and afraid, therefore clouding her judgement big time. 60% in I though I was going to cause some serious bodily harm, I took a break and when I returned things started looking up. Helena shed a whole new light on the meaning of friendship, love and music. My favorite kind of books are the ones with lessons, and damn but Helena doesn't disappoint.

A decision had been made in my life, many years ago now. So long ago that I didn’t know exactly when it was made, or even who’d made it: me, or my father. I honestly had trouble remembering a time before it.

“I don’t care!” I told him. “I don’t care that we can’t graduate, I don’t care if we have no money. I want to live in a two-bit apartment with you, with walls so thin—”
“We can hear the neighbors fucking?” said Connor.
“Hell no. They can listen to us!”

I was completely enamored with Connor. It felt like he was an onion, and Helena was gradually peeling back the layers. I know onion sounds very unattractive, but trust me minions Connor Locke is very alluring. At times it felt like Karen's judgment was my own, but I know better than anyone appearances can be deceptive, so when she would begin her monologue on what a playboy Connor was I wanted to stuff a sock in her mouth. Her opinions kept getting in the way, but as the story progresses and Karen begins to listen you find yourself completely infatuated with Connor. I found him to be incredibly patient with Karen, and his character was just so charming, cute and appealing it was hard to resist. I felt bad for him, when things began to unravel. How hard it must have been for him, how no one really knew him or how this whole time he's felt unworthy and as insecure as all the other students. I admired him for stepping up though, I think others would have just told Karen no and walked away.

His relationship with Karen was one of blossoming friendship, becoming an incredible romance that captures your absolute attention. I felt like they fit together perfectly, balancing each other out. Much like they're music, I guess it represented two things which shouldn't really gel together finding a means of harmonizing. It was sweet, cute, fiery and so hot it was scorching! Definitely a lot more graphic than from what we see in Dance For Me, but that just made it all the more titillating. My absolute favorite scene was the dream, holy skittles it was divine I think that was a stroke of genius, giving that extra touch.

“Sir!” I gasped as his lips found my heaving bosom, “I am not that sort of woman! You mistake me for Lady Natasha, or Lady Clarissa, or Jasmine, the town harlot!”

Just as in Dance For Me, Helena gives a tremendous amount of detail into the world of music. Every move, every note and every key illustrated so beautifully you find yourself understanding music in a completely different light. In those scenes where they rehearse you find yourself in awe, picturing everything in your head as she makes it so vividly clear. Her writing style is definitely unique, there's a bewitching undercurrent to her words. I dare you to read it and not fall in love.

I was lucky: I had my music.” He sipped his coffee and looked at me. “And I have you.”

Connor kissed me again. “That’s not very rock n’ roll.”
“You could use a little taming, Connor Locke.”
“Oh.” He leaned even closer. “You going to be the one to tame me?”

*Swoon*

As I mentioned we see the whole gang, there's more Natasha and Darrell, Clarissa and Neil and Jasmine. It was interesting to see how their relationships were going from another's eyes, and I was beyond shocked with Jamsine's character. Damn is there a hell lot more going on there. She needs her own book, and I need that book. Please let it be with the sexy officer Kowalski, pwetty pwease with a chewwy on top! If you've read my review for Dance For Me, you'll know I mentioned there was no HEA, rather Natasha and Darrell working together to get to their deserved HEA, and in In Harmony we see although together they're still struggling. Everything is not suddenly hunky dory 'cause they're in love, the same goes for Neil and Clarissa, like any real relationship it's all about hard work and Helena depicts that excellently.

Now where this book fell short for me was Karen's decisions, no matter how hard I tried I couldn't wrap my head around her staying silent. How she would rather watch her friends walk down a path which is going to lead to a road of hurt, rather than speak up and be the friend they trust her to be. Like I said I understood some of her thought process, but any good friend would speak their mind when their friends could potentially end up hurting themselves, no advice is ever 100% accurate or foolproof but for your friends you take that risk. The fact she wouldn't just made me want to bitch slap her to be honest. Furthermore her relationship with Connor, although incredibly hot and sweet, was lacking that something extra. Maybe it's the fact we don't get his POV, which I'm not going to lie about really disappointed me, or how slow their relationship seemed to progress. It was like they took one step forward and two steps back, and their communication skills could have been a lot better. Karen was also a little too naive for my liking, I mean you could just smell the bitch on Ruth and yet Karen opted for being nice.

So my rating minions? 4 mind-blowing stars. Despite the slow build up to their romance, and my issues with Karen the story itself was remarkable, and when she finally woke up and took a stand I actually got up to happy dance. Long after I'd put it down, I was still smiling. This book had me swooning, cheering, cracking up with laughter, screaming in frustration and gave me warm fuzzies. And Helena is an author you want to take notice of, the woman's juts brilliant in my opinion. I definitely recommend and trust me you will not be disappointed, it has an uptight heroine and one delectable bad boy...who's IRISH! I kept imagining his accent while reading, and I actually keep saying his name in said accent. Try it...Connor...Con..nor...*swoon*.

Romance:4
Steaminess:4
Action/suspense:0
Overall:4

Well this was a pleasant surprise.

Firstly, I really liked Karen's straightforward personality. I also enjoyed Connor's character. Bad boy with a decent side to him. I'd have preferred him a tad darker but he was alright. The romance was a bit boring at the start but it got more interesting towards the end. The book was surprisingly steamy which is always nice. I'm not sure if I liked all the mentions of the side characters in this story. I haven't read any other books in this series so it was a little difficult for me to connect to their characters.

But overall, I enjoyed this novel.

♡♡♡ because In Harmony had everything I love in a novel:
check: the single POV of
check: a geeky girl who
check: falls in love with a bad boy
check: in an artistic setting.

I only wished they had published a related book-track in Spotify for readers to listen to as they read!

Reasonable

I haven't found this series Fenbrook Academy some of the best work from this author and this book I found a little tedious and had to keep putting it down and then coming back to it. The plot is okay but the main characters aren't that endearing. This just didn't really do it for me.

A good story

Proof that opposites do attract and can be the most solid foundation. I'm glad they got to do it together.

I received this book for free from IFB Tours in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

This book may be unsuitable for people under 17 years of age due to its use of sexual content, drug and alcohol use, and/or violence.

My Initial Reaction...

After already loving Dance For Me, I wasn't at all surprised that I enjoyed In Harmony just as much. I was pleasantly surprised, however, by how different the story felt. Despite being set in the same place, time, and even including many of the same characters, by simply shifting the point of view Helena Newbury managed to tell a very different kind of story. And I loved it.
The Characters...

Karen is the character I would have voted least likely to star in a steamy romance, and yet she pulls it off beautifully. She's been working hard her whole life to get into the NY Phil Harmonica, sacrificing normal relationships and childhood experiences to do so. Karen's the ultimate over-achiever, with an uber successful father's expectations to live up to. I loved seeing her try to navigate her father's expectations with her efforts to find her own path. Karen's also never been in a relationship; her only sexual experience comes from a selection of bodice-rippers hidden under her bed, alongside her dildo. While Karen may be a virgin it's not for lack of interest, just opportunities. Her inexperience forms a humorous backdrop and allows Newbury to stretch out the sexual teasing to its height.

Just when Karen is reaching the culmination of all her hard work her duet partner for her senior recital is injured and can't perform with her. If she wants to graduate, Karen has to put her faith in Connor, the electric-guitar playing, class-skipping, notorious bad-boy. Connor is exactly what you'd expect from a bad-boy: he's ridiculously sexy, talented, cocky and has a notorious reputation with the ladies. And yet there's more going on below the surface. I enjoyed getting to know the deeper side of Connor and appreciated that, while he came with his own set of issues, Newbury didn't write him as a totally broken man either. He needs help, but not rescuing.

I was thrilled too see characters I loved in Dance for Me continue to figure prominently within In Harmony, but their struggles are a subplot and you can easily pick up In Harmony without reading Dance for Me. If you have read it though, you're in for a treat as these excellent characters continue to develop.
The Story...

In Harmony revolves around Karen and Connor's struggle to graduate - which means Connor must pass his classes, Karen must deal with some issues of her own, and they both must figure out how to make a cello and an electric guitar work together. Like in Dance for Me, I loved the way music moved the story forward. Newbury is very gifted in the ways she employs music to express emotions, heighten tension, and tell a story of their own. Some of the best moments were when Karen and/or Connor were playing - it became this tangible way to visualize their journeys as individuals and in their relationship.

I loved that In Harmony didn't duplicate the insta-love that we saw in Dance for Me. Instead we see a relationship that develops slowly, through closely working together over a long period of time. In fact, I think Newbury beautifully complicated the insta-love that had so bothered my in Dance for Me by showing us those relationships in their progression, going through some troubles of their own. Since this story is told exclusively from Karen's point-of-view, which is pretty observant but also hesitant, it's a very different perspective that we saw before.
Concluding Sentiments...

In Harmony has really well-developed characters and intertwines music beautifully to propel the story forward. It's a fairly simplistic plot, without a lot of mystery, but it's thoroughly enjoyable. Once I started, I devoured In Harmony and can't wait to read more from Helena Newbury.

I received this book in exchange for my honest review.

When I signed up for this tour on Itching For Books, I didn’t know this was the second book. So, I started reading the first so I started reading the first to understand better the subject. Believe me when I say this, I dont know how I finished both books in almost two days. I was hooked from the first pages. Unbelievable, how Helen Newbury writes. It intrigues you from the first word and it makes you go along with the characters as if you were there. Except the stories, the covers are beautiful, I love them. I know they say don’t judge the book by it’s cover, but this time I am. They are perfect for the books!

You have two sets of different characters in this story. They couldn't be more different, and at the same time, so perfect for each other. They complete one another. Karen it’s a brilliant musician, she plays the cello and she is a student at Fenbrook Academy. Her father sheltered her and controlled all her life. She has to do everything he says. She has to do a duet in order to join the New York Philharmonic, but her partner Dan got mugged and he was severely injured. So, now she hasn't have a partner. Because of this situation, and all the stuff that happened she is lead to none other than Connor Locke.

Connor it’s an Irish handsome man, funny, charming and a bad boy who plays electric guitar. He doesn't attend class, he is not interested at all in school, he just loves playing his guitar and he does it perfectly! For Connor, the relationship between him and Karen at first, it’s just about teasing because she is daddy’s girl and an easy target. You will think, about the way he acts, that he doesn't care about anything or anyone, but the truth is, he is keeping a big secret and nobody has to find out.

Even if Connor has a chance to drop out of school in order to help Karen with her duo, he doesn't mind it. And the chemistry starts building. They create the most exquisite music, a unique collaboration. That is the moment, this two start falling for each other and it couldn't come in a better time. They work hand in hand and create the duet, and to graduate. Connor starts trusting Karen, they express they’re feelings in a way that will leave you breathless.

I loved the romance in this book. They don’t fall for one another in one second, and they don’t end up in bed after the first page. You can understand a lot from Helen books. The way you can heal with the help of a loved one and to move forward and with success. As long as you have a true friend by you’re side, it’s easy to get over the past and the problems. In Harmony could be read as a stand alone, but I would recommend reading Dance For Me to get the stories right. I can't wait for the next one in the series! Thank you Helena for giving me the opportunity to read this book! And, thank you Shane Morgan for letting me apart of this tour!

Favorite Quotes:

“At one point, we were like this.” And he squatted down right in front of me, his face about an inch from mine. I didn’t have a choice— I had to focus on his eyes, those beautiful, blue-gray jewels. They were…. There was no other word for it. They were twinkling at me. I’d have known he was grinning even if the rest of his face was hidden. There was an openness there, an honesty I’d never seen in anyone. Everything for Connor was simple and easy. He didn’t have a care in the world. The opposite of me, I thought bitterly.

“She doesn’t call, she doesn’t send me flowers….”

Connor’s playing wasn’t like that at all. It was… lazy. Not bad-lazy. Relaxed-lazy. Lazy like driving with one hand on the wheel and the other around a girl. Effortless. Something stabbed through me, something totally unexpected. It took me a few seconds to realize that it was jealousy.

“I don’t care!” I told him. “I don’t care that we can’t graduate, I don’t care if we have no money. I want to live in a two-bit apartment with you, with walls so thin—”
“We can hear the neighbors fucking?” said Connor.
“Hell no. They can listen to us!”

„I was lucky: I had my music.” He sipped his coffee and looked at me. “And I have you.”

(From a blog tour post: http://www.readergirlsblog.com/2013/1...)
(My rating: 4.5) Karen is a proud music geek. She's had one career track since she was a kid-to play cello for the New York Philharmonic Orchestra. Now she's practicing for the spring recital--the most important public performance of her life so far--so she can graduate, and hopefully prove to the NYPO rep in attendance that she is worthy of a position with them. When her duet partner hurts his arm and cannot perform, Karen walks around Fenbrook Academy in a zombie-like state. All of her hard work, all of the years spent practicing and not having much of a social life, will have been for naught. Her controlling father will sweep in, pack her things, and take her back to Boston to all the things she does not want.

Until she hears about Connor. He is the only remaining student who hasn't picked a partner. Karen feels hopeful and pursues him, never thinking about the repercussions of working with the gorgeous bad boy guitarist. She just may discover there's more to the Irishman than just a sexy brogue and tight abs. And another set of strings may feel the pluck of fingertips-her heartstrings.

The old adage of opposites attract applies to Helena Newbury's latest addition to her Fenbrook Academy series, In Harmony, and the author makes the formula work exceedingly well. Karen starts off like the little mouse she is, geeky, smart, determined to perform in the spring recital and graduate. She wasn't expecting a lad like Connor to turn things completely around for her. Connor is also a wonderful character, all assurdness and confidence until one scratches at his hot hung-over mask. The young man found below may surprise you. He certainly surprised me. The chemistry between these two is subtle at first, until they begin to practice. Through music, they find more than the need to find acceptance from the educators at Fenbrook and the respect of their peers-they find each other.

Finally, a story about music which mentions music and has the characters performing, practicing, and writing it. Karen carries her cello around like the extra dead weight she's been carrying on her shoulder all her life. The burden of not being able to perform in public and the misconception others had from her first school concerning a certain past incident, along with the rigors of a demanding father who can cut her monetary provisions at any second, are all too much for this young woman to have. Connor has his own problems but with him she sees everything she is not and everything she could be.

Karen and Connor don't fall for each other instantly. Thank you. Their relationship change from partners to lovers is gradual, much like the creation of a stirring composition which takes many hours to compose and perfect. They are captivating to watch. I so enjoyed the little touches and nuances between them as feelings intensify and true musicianship and passion surfaces. A certain look or touch can be more powerful than paragraphs of purple prose found in some of today's romances. The scenes on the rooftop, in the practice room, in the supply closet, heck, anytime these two get together, there was something else to admire and love. The city setting provided the right amount of tension, the school halls gave it a sober realism. A strong supporting cast of characters including Karen's group of closest friends added to the allure of this New Adult contemporary romance.

This has been a great week for reading New Adult. Helena Newbury has now been added to my list of favorite authors as her In Harmony novel still resonates with my heart long after I finished reading it. A classic formula for attraction becomes a timeless love story between a talented music geek and misunderstood bad boy. Set amidst the backdrop of a performing arts college, Karen and Connor's story will enchant readers. They certainly enchanted me.

REVIEW:

The story:
Karen, the serious & studious cello musician is so close to making her (and her father's) dreams come true as she nears graduation from The Fenbrook Academy. She has worked her whole life, pushed by her overbearing father, for the opportunity to perform in front of scouts for the NY Philharmonics Orchestra. But after her duet partner is injured her chances aren't good, with the only option being to perform with notorias bad boy and soon to be drop out Connor.

Their friendship starts out rocky, with neither one relating to the other - either musically or personally. But as they spend more time practising together they start to understand each other better and so their romance begins.

I felt sometimes that the sexual side of things was a little forced. Not so much the actual love scenes, but there are a lot of discussions between Karen and her friends about their sex lives that just felt a little unnatural. I think there purpose was to add to the sexual tension, but if anything it actually diminished it a bit. Sometimes less is more, and rather than being told about their sexcapades, it would have been more natural to just see the characters in their romantic situations.

The characters:
Karen is a sweet and extremely sheltered character. Her whole life has been pre-chosen for her by her father, and she makes few decisions for herself. For much of the story, she's quite helpless and is constantly being rescued by Connor - whether it be from tripping over, spiders, the recital or overly groppey men that she seems to attract. It wasn't until late into the book that she makes a stand, and starts to take charge of her own life. It was such a relief to see her finally make this huge step.

Connor isn't as simple as a 'bad boy'. Yes he skips class and acts like he doesn't care that he won't graduate, but he has his reasons, and once his secret comes out, it was much easier to understand his attitude.

The romance:
The romance between Karen & Connor worked well in the 'opposites attract' kind of way. They are both very different, but they compliment each other so well and that is reflected in the musical aspect of the story. Just like their two very different instruments, they must work hard to to make it work, but they find similarities and embrace their differences.

The Writing:
I felt the musical parts of the story were really well written. To have music come to life just from the writing is not an easy thing to do but I think Newbury was very successful in achieving this. I felt like I was right there listening to the must and feel the energy they created during the final performance.

FINAL WORD:
Overall this was a fun and sexy story. The musical element to story gave it a real difference and made the story more engaging. All this is a standalone I would recommend reading Dance With Me first, as it does setup a lot of the secondary characters.

CONTENT:
Sexuality: medium-strong / strong sexual dialogue, sexual assault & sex scenes
Violence: mild-medium / fist fights
Language: medium / some f words
Drugs & alcohol: medium / main character get drunk

In Harmony is the second book in Helena Newbury's Fenbrook series but it can absolutely be read as standalone. I never felt like I didn't know what was going on despite not having read Dance for Me, the first book in the series. However, I adored In Harmony so much I will be picking up Dance for Me, as soon as I possibly can.

In Harmony was reminiscent of Pride & Prejudice, for me, in that the two main characters have formed opinions of one another prior to really knowing one another. But as Karen and Connor get to know each other, they realize there is so much more to the other than what meets the eye...than their perception of the other.

Both Karen and Connor have definite ideas about what the other is all about. Karen thinks Connor is a loser, playboy, what with his rarely attending class and his long list of broken hearts. Connor thinks Karen is an uptight, goody-two shoes as shown by her perfect performances, obsessive practicing, and straight A's. But when an accident leaves Karen without a recital partner, she has to overlook those opinions because Connor is her only hope to graduate.

Karen is an extremely talented cellist, and an extremely driven young woman. It's been her dream (and her father's) to play for the New York Philharmonic Orchestra since she was 6 years old. Her obsessiveness towards perfection has kept her from experiencing...life, really. And she has just a few insecurities.

Connor is an uber-talented guitarist brought to Fenbrook on scholarship...from Ireland. (just one of the reasons to swoon over him) His devil-may-care attitude, partying ways make him seem less than serious about music or his degree. But beneath his casual air, he's hiding a few insecurities of his own.

I gotta say I loved, loved this book. Yes, the plot was somewhat predictable in certain spots, but it was compelling nonetheless. I was literally tense and gripping my ereader in spots just waiting of the other shoe to drop. But In Harmony was a lot of fun, too. I really enjoyed seeing the emotional growth of Karen and Connor. They both were really insecure, vulnerable young people, hiding behind facades. Once we learn the reasons behind Connor's cockiness, I had a new appreciation for him. We know all the reasons behind Karen's self-doubt but seeing her bloom under the confidence she gains with Connor was fascinating.

Then there's the music. I have to admit to this being one of my favorite parts. Music was such an integral part of this story. That Karen and Connor were able to blend their instruments, cello and guitar, together was amazing. I think this translates outside of music as well...keep an open mind. Things that at first glance might seem impossibly ill-suited can meld together magnificently. It was a pleasure to witness their composition for the recital - watching how it unfolded and that it was so personal for them both. I could almost hear the music, Ms. Newbury did such a fine job with it's description.

The story as a whole flowed well and the prose was just as musical as the story. They side characters were equally as well developed as Karen and Connor and I truly look forward to continuing the series. As I said, the plot was predictable in a few instances but it certainly didn't detract from my enjoyment of the story. And the ending, while tidy, was completely gratifying.

In Harmony was captivating I completely enjoyed this story and the characters. The authors writing style seemed to flow with ease and it was easy to get so caught up in the story that time seemed to flash by. Karen is an aspiring musician, She desperately want to play in the New York Symphony simple because that is her life's dream but what effected me the most was, could it be because she wanted this or because this is the direction her overbearing father pushed her in. Granted, her father did love her but he was choked through a vice so tight that he smothered her from life and experiences. This created so many issues for Karen. As a character, I like Karen. She's smart, determined and loyal to her friends but she would hide inside herself that you felt that you were missing some aspects to her. Of course she could live through the music but she lacked the skills to communicate, or express herself. Karen failed to realize that she has a lot to offer but she was insecure in so many ways that it broke my heart.

Conner on the other hand appeared to be confident. He was also inspiring and passionate about his music. His exterior showed someone who is confident to other that were looking from the outside in but he also had some insecurities about himself, which completely made me swoon over him. So when Karen and Conner has to band together to save each other it completely warmed my heart. These two character were complete opposites of each other due to their life experiences but they completed each other on so many levels. Being opposites almost deterred them from being together because they were both afraid to let each other hep them in the capacity that they needed it the most. Conner from my perspective saw something in liked in Karen since the first time the bumped into each other, maybe I am putting that wrong, she was falling and he help to saver her. lol

I was shocked that Kaen had the courage to find Conner so that he could help her in the recital. I was rooting for her, screaming finally girl, put on the big girl panties and do your thing because you need this in order to graduate. When Conner told her no, I wanted to punch him right in the eye. because it took a lot of courage for Karen to even work up the never to even approach him. Don't get me wrong I love Conner, but he almost ended up on my $hit list.

Once Karen and Conner characters develop you see them morph in to something special and the changes that are occurring in them enticingly heats the story up and as the romance builds your a engulfed in it, completely.

I could not put this book down even if I had too, to save my life. That should speak volumes.

Helena Newbury has the gift of telling a story and if you never experienced her work you would be missing out on a great story and an awesome series.

My Recommendation:

I rated this book 4 out of 5 purple rant hearts and would recommend this book to anyone that loves a good contemporary romance story.
