Gift, unknown who from, there was no note. | Not really relevant to my specific hat interests, but more importantly I question the accuracy of some of it and the objectivity of the writer. Consider that the book starts with a foreword that states "Ladies' hats have never displayed either the variety or the quality of men's hats", which I disagree with and which is not then supported in any way by the remainder of the paragraph (which lists "leading figures in the field of ladies' millinery" and which identifies one designer as "the clever wife of" another designer). There's also a section in the 20th Century chapter that discusses how unusual and divergent and astonishing French fashion was, with an ad to illustrate that which shows the same fashions that were popular in England and the US at the time. No change in the lines of dress or hat. A Hidatsa Dog Dancer has been misnamed as well.
