The holiday novella, Book 2, following the award-winning debut of Forged in Dreams and Magick in the Highland Legends Series:
Desperate to honor a life-long promise, Susanna MacEalan escapes her abusive clan with the fierce determination of never falling under the power of a man. Ever.
Aggravated by shallow-hearted pursuing lasses, Robert Brodie, commander of his clan’s elite guard, has foresworn scheming women. Forever.
When magick transforms Brodie Castle into a Christmas wonderland, the two despondent souls find solace in a most unexpected place . . . each other’s arms.
Amid a whirlwind of escalating events, Susanna’s traumatic past threatens Robert’s ability to protect the one woman meant for him. In a harrowing moment, as her fears and demons coalesce, will hope, faith, and love be enough to save them?

Nestle down for a joyride of unparalleled mistletoe mischief as multiple award-winning author Kat Bastion unveils five brand-new multicultural romantic comedies in… Half-baked Holidays.
AND
The final two novels in The Unbreakable Series, Icebreaker and Ball Breaker are both coming soon!
I'm always up for a good highlander romance, and Bound by Wish and Mistletoe fit that bill perfectly. A bit of excitement, a feisty young woman trying to claim her independence, and of course our highlander-the commander in his clan-that will absolutely make you swoon with the respect and reverence he shows for our heroine.
Susanna's character is brave and spirited, escaping from a life that was about to become even more restricted than she'd already experienced. Robert is strong, a highly skilled warrior and protector. The pull between them is immediate, more so for Robert since Susanna is still trying to get free of her confining existence and is not willing to trust any man whatsoever.
Things between them become intense, with scenes showing great tenderness alongside great passion. This along with the action and a bit of magic make this a captivating tale that you won't want to put down. 4.5 stars from me-it would have been 5 except Susanna's poor decision making near the end just rankled me a bit. I'd highly recommend this to highlander romance fans 18+ (for explicit sexual content).
He opened his eyes, pinning her with a hard look. “I’ll offer you the world. If you want the sun and moon snatched down from the sky, I’ll hunt them down and bring them to you. The countless stars that glitter in the night shall become jewels adornin’ your hair. All the oceans wide will be yours to traverse, and each creature shall treat you as friend and master. “As for me--” he dropped his lips to her forehead, grazing them across her soft skin “--my heart belongs to you, my soul is yours, and yearns to give you pleasure like you’ve never imagined.”
4.5 stars!
Move over, Julia Quinn and Sabrina Jeffries! Kat Bastion is an absolutely gifted author and deserves to be recognized for her talent.
I simply love a good historical romance. This is one of them. A splendid novella that’s perfect for the holiday season (I read it after Christmas and still enjoyed it). It’s a quick story that you can read in no time and leave you with a satisfied smile. This book picks up where the first one leaves off.
Susanna is a strong heroine. She grows up being terrified of her father but when he betroths her to a man she absolutely despises, she runs away. She runs until she finds herself captured by Iain’s trusted commander, Robert.
Robert is tall, dark and handsome. Everything Susanna shouldn’t be attracted to. He and his men are out getting a Christmas tree for Isobel when Susanna stumbles upon them. He doesn’t trust her at first and bounds her wrists and holds her prisoner for a short time.
He finds himself unable to stay away from her. He’s drawn to her in a way he’s never been before by a woman... and he makes her his wife.
“If God granted me a last piece of time to treasure forever, this would be it,” she whispered. He sighed, tears springing into his eyes as he was overcome by new emotions assaulting his heart. “Aye, love. This would be it.” ... For the first time in his life, he felt protected. Cherished. Loved.
...”I’ll be wherever you are. I’ll protect you. I’ll offer all that I am to you. Wherever you are--” Susanna raised a finger and placed it over his lips, silencing him. Her smile grew wider. “Wherever you are... I am found. You’re the one I wished for. I prayed for you long before I met you.” She cupped her hand over his cheek, fresh tears brimming in her eyes. “Susanna, I wished for us under that mistletoe.” She leaned up against him, entwining her hands around his neck as he dipped his head down. She placed the softest kiss on his lips. As he closed his eyes, losing himself in their tender connection, drifting as close to Heaven as God allowed a man to get, he felt her lips curved into a smile. Sweet words drifted from her lips, branding his heart. “Then us we shall forever be.”
Please keep in mind that this is indeed a novella. It’s a quick romance with lots of action and lots of passion. I adore the love scenes. ;)
I highly recommend you read this novella if you love historical romance. The storyline was superbly thrilling and exciting. It’s one heck of an enjoyable read.
I look forward to Ms. Bastion’s next book BORN OF MIST AND LEGEND. I cannot wait to read Brigid’s story.
**ARC graciously provided by Kat Bastion via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review**
This novella is an entertaining and quick read. It has all the elements that I could possibly want in even a full length book. I love Scotland any time of the year, but place me in Scotland during the Christmas season then you have definitely caught my attention! The story opens with Robert, Duncan, and Seamus hunting for a Christmas tree for Isobel and coming across a surprise intruder, Susanna MacEalan . Susanna is running from her clan and is determined to be in control of her own life and how she lives it. Because this is a novella and I want to be careful of what I reveal, I will just say that I do love Robert. I love to see an alpha character put up a good fight against falling for a strong woman because it always makes the outcome that much sweeter. Susanna needed a little convincing herself, the thought of giving up her freedom after all that she had to go through was not easy. If you are looking for a nice Christmas read that will provide an enjoyable break from the holiday craziness this is a great novella to pick up.
I received a copy of this in return for an honest review.
I think the best part of this book was the fact that it really made me want to read the FIRST one in the series! This was great, but left me with question regarding the "magick" and the guy with WINGS, and just HOW that castle moved!
Yes, I enjoyed this a lot.
There was an instant attraction between Susanna and Robert, an attraction that they acted upon quickly. I don't have a problem with that when it's in this time frame. That's pretty much how things happened way back when. I was a little surprised that Susanna fell into a relationship with Robert considering how she had been raised. Finally decided to not over-think that because they both felt the pull toward each other. The magick, if you will. They were meant to be together, so why fight it, you know?
Although Susanna, after the fact, did decide to run, at least for a short time. I want to know about the horse she rode!
There are two "bad guys" in this story. They needed some just rewards. I enjoyed seeing them get theirs.
I wouldn't have minded reading less of the repetitive narrative about Susanna's back story. I got it the first time and repeating it over and over again didn't build the suspense. I found myself skimming those portions and dropped my rating a little.
Seeing their first Christmas at the castle, via the traveler from the future, was totally enjoyable.
The magick of Brodie Castle. Yes, indeed. This book piqued my interest and I will be checking out the first book in the series, and Book Two when it makes an appearance.
Four and a half bookmarks, rounded to five for Goodreads:
*Thank you, NetGalley and Kat Bastion, for the opportunity to read Bound by Wish and Mistletoe.
I’d like to start my review by saying that I read Bound by Wish and Mistletoe when it first released and I loved it. I’ve been quite busy reading so many books that I felt that I had to reread this book in order to write my personal review. Now, rereading a book is like watching a movie for the second time. You always catch things you may have missed the first time. I can honestly say that I am really glad that I reread it because my journey into the Highlands was so much better this time around.
Now, as for the personal part of this review, when rereading, I had my very own Robert reading over my shoulder. (He became interested in the book when he saw the character names) Yes, I am a Susanna and have my very own Robert. Just like the characters in the book, I too ran into my Robert during a tough time in my life. While my Robert may not be a Scottish Highlander, he is quite similar to this warrior in the book. So yes, you could say he saved me too. Susanna, in the book and I share certain traits as well. I am strong willed and like to get my way.
I loved how the love story of these two characters unfolded and carried out throughout the book. Of course I cannot forget to mention my other favorites, Isobel, Iain, Brigid and Skorpius. Their presence in this book made the story complete. Besides the love story, the new found friendship between the ladies brought a smile to my face.
Christmas is a magical time of the year and the perfect setting for this magical story set in an enchanting place. The symbolism of Christmas, of hope, completes the story of Robert and Susanna. It also brings hope to the other characters that I can’t wait to read more of in the next book. Now, Kat’s writing is eloquent.
I was most impressed with the love scenes in this story. Wow, Kat, I am visual and your scenes do stimulate the senses as they are beautifully and tastefully written. There is a beautiful message embedded in this story. I hope everyone that reads it discovers it. For me, the personal connection completed and made this story so perfect.
I enjoyed this book immensely and highly recommend it! I gave this book 5 brilliant stars! Thank you Kat for writing such a beautiful story.
My favorite quotes “You needn’t be afraid of me, Susanna,” he murmered. “I give you my word, every action I make around you will be for your protection…or pleasure.” “Anythin’ you want me to have, you’ll offer. If I have my way, you will beg me to take it.” “On a occasion, a person comes into your life and you doona know how or why, but you know them. You feel connected in ways you canna explain. I never question the uncommon gifts of friendship and love—I embrace them.” “Susanna, please. If you keep shakin’ your ass against me like that, I might die right here in this chair.” “Tonight is one of countless nights in many years to come where we will celebrate hope, faith, and love at Christmastime.” “I dinna know people could be so happy,” she confessed, her voice soft to her own ears. ”I had no idea happiness was possible for me, before you.” “No woman ever gained my interest, because none of them were you.” “Everything is possible. When we least expect it and have given up all hope of findin’ what we want, suddenly it appears in the most unlikely of places.” “Lass, I’ve gone easy on you tonight. I’ll tease and worship your body ‘til you shake with need, then I’ll give you the pleasure you crave, over and over…and over again.” “You are the wish I made. The verra thing I’d prayed for.” “Wherever you are… I am found. You’re the one I wished for. I prayed for you long before I met you.” “Susanna, I wished for us under that mistletoe.”
Bound by Wish and Mistletoe is #1.5 in Kat Bastion’s Highland Legend Series. I read and reviewed the first book, Forged in Dreams and Magick a while ago,and it tore me apart, put me back again, just to toss me in another direction next. I loved Forged in Dreams and Magick. So, I was a bit nervous about starting to read Bound by Wish and Mistletoe – would it be just as good, or was the first book a once in a lifetime? As we all knows, it does happen. What we read, and how we perceive the books all depends on mood and where we are in life.
Robert Brodie and two of his fellow Guards are on a hunt for a tree for Lady Isobel when Robert quite literally is run down by Susanna MacEalan. Not knowing if she is a friend or foe, Robert takes her into custody. In reality, he has just sealed his own Fate, he just doesn’t know it yet.
Turns out Susanna is on the run from her abusive father and his clan, swearing that she will take her freedom, or die trying. She doesn’t want to suffer the way her dear Mama did. Seeing firsthand how cruel men can be, she has fiercely determined that she will never fall under a man’s spell – ever.
Robert has been chased by lasses most of his life. All of them can’t see past his title (commander of the Guards), so he has sworn off ALL women. He’s so tired of all those greedy, needy and vain girls. He needs a partner, a woman who can stand up to him, AND see the man he is underneath.
As the magical Season of Christmas is closing in, both Robert and Susanna has to decide if they can trust themselves and each other to let the other person in. Hopefully Susanna’s past won’t destroy her one chance of True Love, or maybe the damage is already done?
--------------------------------------------------------------- Kat Bastion has done it again. She wrote a book that is filled with magic, love, passion, fear and action (both with a sword, and the more steamy kind). But more importantly… Kat wrote a book that made me connect with the characters emotionally. My heart tore at how frightened Susanna was, not only for her father, but her fear for love. Or more accurately, how she thought love was. Growing up with a mother who was abused by her husband (her father), I’m not surprised that she is afraid. I’m relieved she has any fight left in her. There are many who would’ve lay down on their back and bared their throat, just to get everything over with. But not Susanna.
I loved the chemistry between Robert and Susanna, how he tore down her walls, but also how she bared him. It was a delight to read. The fight back and forth, the banter between them, the feelings coursing through Susanna, where she alters between doubting them and savoring them. She dares to hope, just to trample all over them herself two minutes later because she is so afraid to bring in a little flicker of light to her darkness. Sometimes it’s easier to believe in the darkness, than hope for the light.
Even more amazingly, Kat manages to write in quite a few of my favorite characters from Forged in Dreams and Magick; Lady Isobel and Ian, Ian’s sister, Brigid, their brother Gawain, and my favorite angel; Cupcake.. uups… I mean Skorpius. *giggles* You should hear some of the other names Isobel finds for him.
I can’t wait to find out who is featured in book two. Will it be Brigid and Skorpius, or will the mighty and haunted Gawain finally find some peace?
I loved Bound by Wish and Mistletoe, it was a magical read, showing us that miracles do happen, especially around Christmas.
Bound by Wish and Mistletoe by Kat Bastion follows the fabulous Forged in Dreams and Magick. I was drawn back into Kat’s gorgeous Highland world from the very first pages and was so happy with this novella and being able to have another taste of the Brodie Clan.
Susanna MacEalan is in the midst of a desperate escape from her horrid clan and her father. She refuses to live another minute with the barbaric and ignorant people she is supposed to call a family. The last thing she expects to run into is a group of men in the woods along her escape route. Now she finds herself at their mercy and in need of their help if she stands any chance of getting away for good. Will she be able to trust a man? It’s men that have caused her to run in the first place. Without many options, she will have to swallow her pride and fears and trust this Highlander, whether she likes it or not.
On a ridiculous mission for something called a Christmas tree, Robert Brodie is annoyed, cold and tired…but not just for having to traipse through the winter woods looking for a tree. He’s also annoyed with women and has officially sworn them off for good. Now, with the tree procured, and his task just about complete, he is caught by surprise by the young and beautiful lass waving her dagger at him after stumbling upon him and his men in the woods. He realizes she’s in need of help and he’s realizes he would do anything to keep her safe. Struck by a sudden wave of emotions, he also realizes there is no way he’s going to let this woman go. She may not know it yet, but fate has sent her to him.
The fates and magick, it seems, have brought Susanna and Robert together for many reasons. The most important reason is simply that they were made for each other. The attraction and intense emotion they share for one another is a gift, and one they both will treasure.
I wrote earlier that I was so happy to be back in Kat’s gorgeous Highland world. I adore Kat’s writing and this novella is a prefect addition to the Highland Legends Series. Susanna broke my heart. The poor girl has been through so much at the hands of the very people who are supposed to love and care for her. Reading her stories of the abuse she and her mother endured was so very sad. I admired her tenacity and resolve in deciding to leave her old life behind in search of happiness and freedom. She sure is a spitfire! Robert is amazing. He’s a warrior though and through with a huge heart and soft side that had me swooning. He knows he has to work really damn hard to win Susanna over and he’s up for the challenge. Oh, how I loved his drive to win Susanna. Together, they are a beautiful match and make a fantastic couple. I also loved seeing our favorite characters form Forged in Dreams and Magick. We get to see a bit of what the Clan Brodie has been up to and get a glimpse of what’s to come for them. Oh, I can’t wait!
Thank you, Kat, for another beautifully written story.
Bound by Wish and Mistletoe by Kat Bastion (A Highland Legends novella) Source: Author Rating: 5/5
Most of the time I love having a TBR list; I always know once I finish a book there is a pile of titles I am excited about just waiting for me to dive into. And then I come across a read like Bound by Wish and Mistletoe and am thoroughly pissed that I have a TBR list because it means I can’t immediately read the other book(s) related to the book I just finished (BTW: the TBR list certainly didn’t stop me from buying the other book in this series!)
And so, this is why I loved Kat Bastion’s book . . .
The characters: each and every character in Bound is a fully-developed and thoroughly interesting individual. Susanna is a stubborn woman, bound and determined to never allow a man to control her choices and/or her life again. After a lifetime of her father’s cruelty and abuse, Susanna cannot imagine every willingly committing herself to a man no matter how kind, tender, generous, fierce and, sexy he may be. Robert Brodie is a beautiful and fierce warrior who has grown bored and tired of the flighty and fickle women who do nothing but throw themselves at him in an attempt to gain his interest. Brodie has sowed his wild oats many times over and is now interested in no women at all or the One and nothing and no one else will satisfy him.
The plot: In a time when women had little to no independence, Susanna has fled her father’s home and a betrothal she would rather die than honor. Escape is her only option and when she runs, Susanna does not look back. She knows Hell is chasing her and when she runs into Brodie and his men, she feels marginally less threatened though still not safe. Brodie and his men know the reputation of Susanna’s father and feel there is nothing to do but take the young woman to the castle and protect her as only they can. To Brodie’s great surprise, Susanna proves to be a fierce and determined woman who may just be capable of claiming the warrior for her own. This is, of course, if Brodie can convince her to overcome her fears and bind herself to a man for the remainder of her days.
The Bottom Line: I finished the last page of this fast-paced novella and immediately went to Amazon and bought the full-length novel (and first book in the series), Forged in Dreams and Magick. I pretty much fell head over heels in love with Brodie from the second he was introduced and though Susanna frustrated me a few times, I generally adore her as well. The plot is quick, it’s a bit daring, has just the right amount of action and naughty bits, a touch of magic, a for realsies angel (apparently!) and, includes just enough teaser-type information about other characters to have me wanting to dive into the first book without thought or care to what else I should be reading! Bound is well-written, has excellent dialogue and will certainly appeal to readers with an interest in light paranormal, magic, period pieces and HEAs. Read on!!
**Review written for an originally posted on my blog, Book Bliss. I received a copy of this book in exchange for an unbiased and honest review**
Review: 4.5 stars
General: If you’re looking for something with magic, sexy highlanders and a very different take on Christmas in a novel look no further. Bound by Wish and Mistletoe is an engaging book from cover to cover. Kat Bastion does a fantastic job transporting you back to ancient Scotland. Her use of dialect is spot on and so perfect I could hear that sexy Scottish accent in my head every time Robert spoke! The plot is engaging and so unique because it merely used Christmas as a back drop whereas so many Christmas novels and novellas make it the sole focus. In this novella the focus is on Susanna and Robert with small glimpses into the world of the other characters using Christmas merely as a device for the back plot and has pretty much nothing to do with the main story.
The characters were engaging and well paired. Each and everyone of them from the book 1 couple to the drop dead sexy angel that I can’t wait to learn more about was perfect. Their interactions felt true to the time period and it was so easy to fall into their world.
So why not 5 stars? The ending was extremely rushed. Whether you had read Forged in Dreams and Magick or not this book was super easy to follow and you never felt confused. Until the end. Throughout the novella you either know from book 1 or from clues something is crazy about the castle. There are so many beautiful pieces of information indicating it but the explanation is completely skipped over. Independent of book 1 I think this book needed to show Susanna learning about what had happened and how it all worked. Her character wouldn’t have simply taken it and I think that needed to be seen to believe she was truly choosing Robert and Clan Brodie. Also, the final sequence, which I won’t spoil, was a little rushed and I found myself a little confused on physical descriptions and it was such a shame since otherwise I felt like I was in the world with them.
Characters: Susanna- Susanna is a spitfire that you cannot help but love from the getgo. Trying to flee and outrun her past she is a complex character for the nobility at the time. She had a rough upbringing and while it taught her some skills she was completely naive to essentially everything dangerous. Her connection with Robert was immediate and consuming and I loved loved reading about them. She was feisty and submissive when it came to him at all the right times.
Robert- Robert is the Highlander your try o force yourself back to sleep dream about. Tall, muscular, imposing and loyalty like no other. Now add in that sexy accent, fighting skills that are the best in his clan and a way in bed that leaves you breathless and you have a character that dominates.
Book Review- Bound by Wish and Mistletoe by Kat Bastion
In this novella, it is Christmas time at the castle Brodie when we revisit Isobel, Iain, and the Brodie clan. Isobel has sent Robert, the commander of the guards, to cut down the tree she scouted earlier. She is determined to have a Christmas celebration for the clan and wants the best tree she can find. Robert and two of his clansmen have traveled to the edges of Brodie land to fetch the tree that Lady Isobel wants. Just as they begin cutting the tree, Robert gets that feeling that something comes their way. Susanna MacEalan breaks threw the trees as she flees from her father. Robert is ready for her and grabs her from her horse, threatening her with his knife before he realizes she is a woman. He releases her and tries to calm her and find out what she is running from. Susanna is scared and refuses to stop for her father to catch her. She has run away from the horrible man and she won’t let these men stop her. Her mother told her all men are bad and to never trust them. Going on her instinct, she holds a knife to Robert’s throat when his men approach her. She has to get away from them. She knows her father is coming for her and she can’t be caught. Her panic is high and Robert sees it. She is a danger and a flight risk as a result. So he ties her hands to keep her there. She is spitting mad and full of fire, which draws Robert like a moth to the flame. His reaction to her is nothing he has ever had. He decides to take her to castle Brodie. She fights him every step of the way, just as he knew she would. Her feistiness amuses him more. She fights her way under his skin. He decides that he is going to keep her. He just needs to convince her of that. Castle Brodie is having its first Christmas celebration and the chaos is a bit much for Susanna. Her fear of her father clouds her mind and threatens to ruin her chance for happiness. Robert is determined to keep her safe and happy even if he has to leave the Brodie clan. He hopes it doesn’t come to that. However, her father comes for her and Robert must protect her at all costs. This was a great story. I liked revisiting the characters from the first book. Susanna was a tortured character and the abuse she endured from her father really impacted her belief system. It messed with her mind to the point that she couldn’t trust her own feelings or the happiness she felt. The guilt and fear led her anxiety and thoughts. Robert is going to have to work hard to get her through it. I recommend reading the first book then this one, so you fully understand the storyline and the characters. I enjoyed this novella and I give it a 4 out of 5.
BOUND BY WISHES AND MISTLETOE Requires a Paradigm Shift
E-Book sent by author for review purposes. No remuneration was exchanged and all opinion offered herein is my own except as noted.
I read the first novel in this series in the late summer and I liked Kat’s voice. The first novel in the series was FORGED IN DREAMS AND MAGICK and it was a time travel, paranormal romance. The voice was fresh and new, and she continues that freshness here with almost no part of the story dependent on the paranormal. That’s nice because I had felt it was the weakest variable in FIDAM.
This story starts of with excitement: a mysterious female, running for her life. Robert is commander of the castle Brodie defenses and is in a postion to help. It’s hard to get her to accept. The romance in the way of the romance novella is fast and requires a fast about face in Susanna’s feelings. But here the change isn’t required of her personal dislike of one man but of all the girl had known about life. She’s been raised to fear men, and learned from her mother that they are all evil. Love and hate on a personal level are often a hairs breadth from each other but the kind of paradigm shift needed here feels too fast.
I must say though that the intimate scenes in the story are very hot and Robert might have a bit of a fetish. He treats her tenderly, but then also in a dominating way. This struck me as very odd since she had just escaped abuse. There is a certain magic, a destined-to-be-together feeling about the couple so maybe that is how she gets over her fear.
Then, of course, the inevitable “escape.” Susanna has some weird emotional issues that are as confusing to me as they are to her. But, you know the horror movie moment where you are saying Don’t go out there, don’t do it. Well, of course with the help of two main female characters from the first novel, Brigid and Isobel, who should certainly know better, she does. The outcome is inevitable right?
The whole story takes place in a couple of days approaching the Christmas holiday. In the castle Christmas has not been a big deal — it;s still early in Christianity and they are apparently far removed. But the addition of the holiday festivities felt nice if a little forced; but it doesn’t feel contrived.
Really what it comes down to is that I really liked the romantic aspects and the hot stuff, but the about face required and the dizzy state of Susanna’s mind were irksome. It’s still an interesting read although it doesn’t stand well without having read the prior volume in the series.
I enjoyed most of it and the rest was more or less normal for the genre. Recommend!
Kat has done it again! Yep, she created another Highlander that I just want more of. Robert Brodie is no Iain or Velloc, but lordy he's all alpha male and very swoony. Any gal reading Bastion's books will get her book boyfriend quota filled with this holiday novella.
Robert Brodie is the commander of Brodie guard and out on a special mission from Isa Brodie: in search of a christmas tree even though he and his men have no idea what this strange custom is for. They soon stumble upon a woman alone and very much on the run. Susanna MacEalen is trying to escape the tyranny of her father and the promise to be wed to a man she doesn't want or love. She's scared, scarred, and more broken than Robert realizes but there is a thread of hope in her that he can't shake. The instant connection is bonded and he vows to protect her. Susanna feels the bond between her and Robert but is very confused since her whole life she was led to believe that men in general were inherently evil and not to be trusted.
I loved the instant attraction between the pair. Even though I would have loved more build-up for the love and sexual attraction, maybe a little bit of push and pull, I understood that they both were weak to the pull and had no other choice. Since the book wasn't surrounding Isa or Iain, we still see them throughout the story. Isa and Brigid take Susanna under their wings once she's back at the Brodie castle. They become the first friends Susanna ever had and help her understand that she could trust other people. Her road to recovery is slow but she learns that even within the gates of Brodie Castle, she is safe. But what she fears is that she will bring harm to her newfound friends.
What really sparked my interest was the relationship we weren't seeing with Brigid and Cupcake aka Skorpius, the black-winged angel. There was obviously tension going on between the two and I wanted to KNOW MORE! AHHH! I can't wait for Bastion's next book so we can all find out. Not only do I love me some Highlanders but the angels are just as hot.
Even though I gave this five lip bites, I wanted to see more development between Robert and Susanna especially after she left toward the end. But it wasn't something I didn't understand, just wanted more. I know that Kat Bastion will deliver with her next book and I suggest anyone read her books! If you are in the mood for Highlanders, this book is for you. It's also the perfect book for the holidays with Isa introducing the tradition of Christmas to the Brodie clan. Mistletoe has never been hotter. Now, only to buy some for myself. Where's my husband?
*I received a ebook copy a changes of an honest review*
A Christmas gift from Kat Bastion for his fans, and for those who start their journey by reading the Wizarding World of Kat .
I would like to put in place and I quote : ” I received a copy for an honest review … ” , Something like : ” I received a gift in advance of Mrs. Kate Bastion for a magical , romantic and hopeful Christmas” Well , you know the rules, so it ‘s start .
When I signed up to read the first book, Forged in Dreams and Magick , did not know what to expect, I was new to the stories of Highlanders, but Kat Bastion really impressed me with his writing , was magical and full of poetry when the parties reached romantic or some descriptions
With this small but magical novel Bound by Wish and Mistletoe, surprised me, is magic and with that spirit which makes Christmas we has happy with each other: love.
In this story we meet Susanna MacEalan and Robert Brodie . The first , Susanna , has at its beginning a difficult history but for the period in which it is written is chord, this “committed ” … to be delivered to a subject with which his father agreed, but hey, Susanna prevents its destination on that road running and literally bumps into Robert . He is not interested in committing to any girl of her clan, but finding a Christmas tree , a girl running over with his horse , a red bow and Christmas spirit could to change his mind , both to him and to Susanna that need to know the meaning of love.
The story is very cute for this upcoming holiday season, Kat knows how to make the impossible possible by putting the festival in a time that was not yet known or celebrated, but, you know what they say you should always take risks and Kat Bastion did. His writing is clear, romantic, sensual and erotic delicate when parts arrive. Strong and reality shows you when the time comes
A good tip if you’re a reader next of the stories by Kat Bastion, the first, you read the book : Forged in Dreams and Magick, and later You unite you in the magic of Christmas Bound by Wish and Mistletoe. For those who have we read the first ,big surprises in this book (that’s why I say this is a Christmas gift in advance), which will make us want to re-read Forged in Dreams and Magick,
I can only say, Thanks Kat for that beautiful Christmas present! :-)
Bound by Wish and Mistletoe. A Highland Legends Novella. Kat Bastion. I recently read Forged in Dreams and Magick and loved it so jumped at the chance to review this novella. Its starts with Robert and a couple of other clansmen from the Brodie clan cutting down a Christmas tree. They hear something approaching in the snowy landscape and quickly capture Susanna. Not knowing who she is, if she's friend or foe, Robert decides they need to keep her with them, she's determined to escape at the first opportunity. Robert has sworn off women being tired of them wanting him just for his clan position, Susanna is escaping after a long held vow, and determined never to be under the power of a man. But fate intervenes, along with a bit of the magick that belongs with Clan Brodie. Great characters, with a typical story from the time when women were chattel, and married off for favours or position at their fathers whim. Susanna was a great character, strong and not one to stand down just because she was told to – she showed her strength when it mattered. Robert too – he was a real gentleman, and determined to earn her respect and love. The sex scenes between them were sizzling, erotic and sensual without being smutty and tawdry. It was good to catch up with Iain and Isa and others from the clan, plus of course my favourite character, Skorpius, AKA Sunshine, Cupcake, Cupid and the latest Santa Claus :) I really look forward to the book about him and Brigid. I liked seeing how they spend their Christmas too. I enjoyed this book, but it was a bit too happy-happy for me to love it – I need some contrast to the smiles and good feelings, and though there was some drama here it didn't give me that emotional feel, when you're so moved that tears threaten. That's the best for me as then the inevitable getting back together is so much sweeter. There was less of the wonderful magick too that made the first book so special, though I’m not sure how it could have been included more in this novella. I'm not sure of length but its not a short novella, from time it took me I’d guess at around 200 pages. Stars: four, great read but just not quite enough balance to the happiness for a five. NB: ARC provided via Netgalley.
Finally! The second book in The Bound series is here and WOW what a story! If you haven’t read the first book, Forged in Dreams and Magick, you wouldn’t be at a total loss if you just jumped stright into the second one. There are a couple of moments at the end of book 2 that would be more understood if you did read the first book. Not to mention you get to meet Iain in book 1. Laird of the castle…. Not to mention a hottie But anyway onto Bound by Wish and Mistletoe. I have to say Kat, you are becoming one of my “books to look forward too” authors. After reading the first book I wondered where you would go with book 2 and I did think you would carry on with Iain and Isobel’s story so was quite surprised to see that it’s about Robert, Iain’s “right hand man” A brute of a man who is swooned after by the fair ladies of the castle *and myself* While out on a errand for Lady Isobel, Robert is practical stomped over by fleeing Susanna, her horse did the stomping by the way. Drawn to her feistiness and unbeknown to the “couple” an attraction blooms much to their surprise and the others around them.
This second book was rather different to the first book. There’s passion in both books but book 2 seemed to take on a more romantic feel than the first, which I enjoyed far more. You see two very ‘unwilling to fall in love’ characters battle with emotions that are foreign to them both and how they deal with them. I liked how you get to see Robert in two roles, one as the soldier and protector of the Brodie clan and the the other side as the gentle giant wanting to love and be loved. If you read my reviews then you know I’m a crier and yes, I did shed a tear or two for this struggling couple.
The story flowed well and I also got to see some of my favorite characters make an appearance from the first book. Kat describes the surrounds with detail and easy with I enjoy very much. I’m looking forward to where this series is going to take me and I’m looking forward to the next instalment of The Bound books.

This is the 1st book I've read by Kat Bastion and it won't be the last. The story had me hooked from the 1st few sentences and held my attention until I finished it. This was a fresh and lovely story set in my favorite locale, the mystic Scottish Highlands, with just the right touch of paranormal.
Susanna and Robert were the heroine and hero in Bound by Wish and Mistletoe. The story is set in the 13th century as Christmas is drawing near....
Susanna has had a hard life watching her Mom being abused by her father. When her Mom dies and she is given to one of her father's cronies in payment for some land, Susanna runs.
Robert is on a mission for his laird's wife, retrieving a Christmas tree she had selected. LOL! You know he is thinking... "What the heck is a Christmas tree?" as this story is set before there were Christmas trees. After retrieving the tree, as he and his men are settling down for the night, he is almost run over by a wild lass on a horse.
I absolutely loved this story! It's even better than the 1st book in the series which I also thoroughly enjoyed. I posted some quotes from this book while reading it... there were so many that made my heart melt. If you loved the Princess Bride movie with it's theme of true love, you will love this book.
Please know that I originally read this book without previously reading the 1st book in this series, Forged in Dreams and Magick (Highland Legends,#1). While I really enjoyed Bound by Wish and Mistletoe as a standalone, it became totally awesome after I read Forged in Dreams and Magick. There were sections of this story that confused me and now that I have gone back and read the 1st book in the series, I understand them. So... I highly recommend that you read the 1st book first.... Reading the 1st book caused me to raise my rating from Very Good to Excellent.
I was quite excited to review this book, as I helped with the Cover Reveal a little while ago. I have not read book 1 yet, but am hoping to very soon. I was given the option to review Book 1 for this tour as well but could just not fit it into my schedule. Now, after reading this Novella, I really need to read this series!
There were times when the references to book 1 were lost on me, but nothing that took away from the story. I filled in the gaps pretty quickly. Kat creates wonderful, lovable and well-rounded characters.
Characters: 4/5 Susanna - I loved her bravery and strength. She is stubborn but not to the extent that it gets on your nerves. I connected with her easily and understood her character which let me love her even more.
Robert - He is a swoon-worthy hero/highlander. You cannot help fall in love with his nobleness, strength and honour.
Susanna & Robert - It is a bit of a typical story line - two stubborn individuals sworn off love - meet and everything changes. The best part is that I did not get bored once.
Brigid & Isobel - Brigid is kind and Isobel is strong-willed and so loving. They play smaller roles in this novella but I cannot wait to read their stories in Forged in Dreams and Magick. I truly enjoyed their kinship and presence, and how they lovingly welcomed Susanna.
Plot, Pace, Writing style & Cover: 4/5 The Irish dialect was a bit confusing in the beginning, but I adjusted quickly. Kat's writing style is easy to follow and has a nice pace. I loved the winter castle wonderland Kat created - ultimately she is a great writer and I cannot wait to read the rest of her books. I do wish this story was a bit longer but loved it all the same. I loved the cover - the symbols and theme were brought into the story perfectly.
***WARNING - This is a novella. It is meant to be read as part of the series. If you have not read it, you will be able to read the novella but not understand what the characters have gone through.
Welcome back to Brodie Castle. Out the cut down the perfect tree for Lady Isobel's Christmas celebration, Robert quite literally is almost barreled over by someone on a horse wearing a hood. His men and him are ready to strike. Imagine his surprise when he lowers the cloak and discovers it's a woman. He recognizes the woman as Suzanna MacEalan the daughter of an enemy.
None of that matters to Robert when his gaze settles on the beautiful woman, no woman can tame his heart, that is until Suzanna. Suzanna is determined to fight him tooth and nail. Her mother taught her not to trust a man EVER. But something about Robert has gained Suzanna's trust. Can Robert convince her that the safest place for her is behind the walls of Brodie castle?
Among the festivities of the first ever Brodie Clan Christmas, can Robert convince her the safest place for her is there and in his arms? Can she let go of her distrust in men to let Robert in completely? Can he protect her from her father and the men who wish to take her back as prisoner.
If you loved Forged in Dreams and Magick you will absolutely LOVE this novella. It brings back all your favorite characters from the first book. Suzanna is a nice addition to the clan's story. She's strong, passionate, beautiful, and scared all a combination that will give Robert a run for his money. Robert is one of the sweetest book boyfriends I have ever read. He knows what he wants and goes after it putting him high on the list of most memorable men. I cannot wait for the next book the wait will be long, but for more of the stories in the Scottish Highlands, the wait will be well worth it, 5 stars!
I had a difficult time rating this novella, due to the fact that I loved the previous book so much. But, for me, Bound by Wish and Mistletoe was a bit of a let down after the amazing roller-coaster ride that was book 1.
Don't get me wrong---I liked this novella. However, I did not fall in love with it, and found a few things that kept me from giving this one a top rating. The romance was very rushed, and I had a hard time believing in it. Also, Susana had such a horrible upbringing, and because of it learned to never trust men. Yet she fell into Roberts' arms the moment she ran away from home. The way her clan treated women, the way her father abused and raped her mother, combined with the fact that this was her first time being outside of her home... I couldn't understand her jumping straight into his bed and his heart. It simply did not mesh, and I couldn't connect well with either character because of this.
That being said, I WILL be anxiously awaiting the next book in this series! The truth of the matter is that not every book is going to be perfect, even from a series/author you love. But that doesn't necessarily mean I suddenly hate that series/author. Ms. Bastion pulled me in with her debut, and while this novella sequel had a few hiccups, the thought of giving up on this series has not crossed my mind! I'm also very curious to see how Brigid's love story turns out, I think that one has a lot of potential. I'll still recommend Bound by Wish and Mistletoe to others, though perhaps not quite as often as I will Forged in Dreams and Magick.
Overall, a quick, sweet holiday romance--and there's nothing at all wrong with that.
Susanna MacEalan and Robert Brodie have a slight problem. Both are attracted to each other from the moment Susanna almost runs Robert and his horse down. Susanna has sworn off men forever, after escaping from her abusive father, the man he sold her to, and the rest of her abusive clan. Robert, on the other hand, commander of his clan’s guard, has sworn off women who plot to entrap him forever. As each falls deeper and deeper in love with the other, they dance around the concept of being together, until finally they give in. Susanna is a bit confused about the magick surrounding Brodie Castle, and Robert must let her in on what exactly the clan is and how they operate. This story follows the love of these two headstrong characters as they traverse the throws of love at first sight to the solid grounding love that will keep them together forever. I was disappointed the book did not incorporate Christmas and its festivities more into this story, which I fully expected because of its title and cover. All there the book contained was a brief passage and a short mention a couple of times. In addition, if you have not read any of the previous books in this series, I highly recommend you do that before reading this one. I had not read any, and after finishing the book, I do not really understand a lot of the magick that occurred or was alluded to throughout the book. In fact, I often felt like I had missed something and went back through pages already read to try to figure out what that was (I never did). The love story of Susanna and Robert is actually quite well done and very interesting to read, but I think it could have been even more so had I read earlier books or had the author filled some background. I received this from Net galley to read and review.
(I received a copy of the book from NetGalley for a fair and honest review.) Four swords up for Kat Bastion's holiday novella, Bound by Wish and Mistletoe. I love time travel romance novels - and if they're set in Scotland - wow! Kilts, sassy 20th Century heroines (or heroes) who travel forward or backward in time. So I was sold on Kat Bastion's first novel, Forged in Dreams and Magick, from her Highland Legends series the moment I saw the description. Then I have to say that mid-way through the novel as Isa or Isobel finds her second soul mate in a Pict warlord, I began to find my mind wandering. I felt like there was almost too much going on.
So when I received her second entry to the series for review I was hesitant, yet hopeful and yes, I LOVED it! Bound by Wish and Mistletoe is, to my mind, a perfect entry in the historical / paranormal fiction genre and has quite a bit to offer. There's really no time travel here, but there is an appearing and disappearing castle, some very, very hunky alpha heroes in kilts, and an appealing heroine, and a mysterious angel.
As this novella was essentially half the length of the first book (but still at what I feel is a solid novel length for another writer), this is a very satisfying read. I enjoyed it tremendously and that said will probably go back to re-read Bastion's first book sometime soon.
Enjoy this holiday novella and see a very special Christmas in the Scottish Highlands. Four swords up for Kat Bastion's Bound by Wish and Mistletoe!
This is a very sweet, Christmas novella about learning to trust and finding happiness....at Christmas!
Susanna is very guarded, after a cruel and cold upbringing. The only source of comfort she's had in her life was her mother, who taught her that men are hateful and merciless creatures. So, imagine Susanna's surprise when she meets the compassionate and kind Robert, even if he looks as fearsome as any other warrior. I loved her determination and courage when she escapes from her painful past. Robert is pretty perfect. He's a warrior through and through, and when Susanna unexpectedly enters his life, he is determined to protect her at all costs. I loved how gentle and understanding he could be with her, and it never made him seem any less of the Highland warrior!
If you've read the prequel, Forged in Dreams and Magick, it's a great little visit with Iain and Isobel. It is easily read as a stand alone, though. The romance is a little rushed, as is common in novellas, but it is very passionate and consuming. The chemistry between Susanna and Robert was searing, and the love scenes with them were very hot. I enjoyed watching Robert confuse Susanna with his compassion, and gain her trust and love.
I love Kat Bastion's writing style, it's very descriptive without being fussy and keeps you turning page after page. I'll be (not so) patiently awaiting the next book in the Highland Legend series, Born in Mist and Legend!
*I received a review copy from the author, for my honest review. Thank you!

Cant I just say Awesome, I just finish reading this book and I love it, this is a great short story to give as a Christmas gift.
The story beginnings with Robert the commander and a couple of clansmen, while they where cutting a pine tree down, to bring it back to the castle. but during that time they hear horse racing their way, that's when Susanna almost run Robert and his horse down, Robert couldn't believe what he was seeing, and this happened right after he sworn off women, cause he did not have no interest in keeping one, Susanna sworn off men forever, after escaping the nightmare that her life had been for years, after Susanna tried to attack Robert he decide to bound her hands with a red ribbon and keep her prisoner into they get to the castle, but what neither of them expected was the strong attraction that they had for each other.
I really love it how this short novella turned up to be, love it how Robert admire Susanna so much cause of her attitude and the way she is let me just say she is a little spitfire. love it how Susanna get to trust Robert right way and that's cause she gets to see how gentle and kind he is with her and he is not afraid to show his feelings for her, and he show her that he's gone fight just to keep her save and protect her.
I really enjoy reading this book and I hope that once you get to read it that you get to enjoy it and fall in love with it as much as I did.
Kat Bastion Thank You Again for letting me enjoy your Amazing and Wonderful Characters and Books did and Awesome Job with this story.
Alright ladies, did you get everything on your list to Santa? Well, even if you did, go add a bonus gift to your pile from yourself and pick up this book (and the first book in the series!) When I think of all the talented writers throughout the years in the romance genre beginning with V.C. Andrew, Nora Roberts, and then moving on to Kelley Armstrong, Karen Marie Moning, and Sylvia Day I can honestly say that Kat Bastion is now added to that list of talented favorite writers.
This novella picks up the story with a Christmas twist and focuses on Robert, Iain's trusted Commander, whom we met briefly in the first novel. What I love about this novella is that the growth in Kat Bastion's writing is admiringly evident. While I adored her first novel, this one is even better. There is not one lull at moment in this story, every page kept me captivated and I would've easily read it without putting it down had it not been for real life interruptions (damn those kids and office work, lol.) Speaking of LOL, it's not often that I truly get so connected to characters that I literally laugh out loud or cry, but there were moments I did laugh loudly (i.e. Kindle reference) and visibly smirk to the point that my children were wondering what Mommy was having so much fun reading!
I think that Kat Bastion has a long and successful future ahead of her. I for one, will be an avid fan of this series and any other future works. So it is with great encouragement that I urge you to purchase and read these books. Keep your eyes peeled for the second complete novel of the series coming out this year, Born in Mist and Legend. Happy Reading!
Wow... with tears in my eyes and an ache in my chest I have just finished reading an exceptional love story by the incredible Author Kat Bastion.
This beautiful story is set in the Scottish Highlands and the time period is in the thirteenth century. It carries on from the first book in this "Highland Series" called "Forged in Dreams and Magick", with the Brodie Clan celebrating their first Christmas! It's filled with extremely loveable characters that make you wish you could find a portal so you could pop in for a visit... and maybe check out a hot alpha male or two wearing a sexy plaid/ or kilt ;-P
"Bound by Wish and Mistletoe" tells you a poignant yet very sensual tale about a unique love story between a lass called Susanna and the Brodie Clan's, Commander Robert. Two people who were not looking for love but when their paths accidentally cross, a connection is formed forever! These words from the last page - "What is the greatest Magick?" - Susanna. "Tis a miracle, rather! That two people who'd given up hope of findin' love in this world, collided together." - Robert ...completely melted my heart!
I love this Authors writing style, as you find yourself drawn into a wonderful and magical tale that she is telling... the only way to explain how it makes me feel is like when I was a child and had stories read to me and the wide eyed wonder that I felt!
A truly brilliant must read series, which deserves more than 5 Stars!!!
This was a decent read for a Highland romance but it is sold as a time travel romance and it seems that the time travel occurred in a previous book. Susanna is a girl from thirteenth century Scotland and she is fleeing her father - a clan leader - when she rides straight into three warriors who are out felling a fir tree. They manage to stop her struggles and bring her back to their castle, where the laird and his lady Isobel look after the girl. Isobel is from our world and has notions about how Christmas should be celebrated. There are some lovely descriptions and the romance is quite sweet, if a little predictable. I really did not need three chapters of bedroom scenes to make the point however, and it's not that long a book. I also thought some of the characters seemed one-dimensional, and I have no idea what a black-winged angel is doing there. I expect a fan of the first book would enjoy it more, and that is the one for time-travel fans rather than this more standard Scottish romance.
I quite liked this little novella, but not as much as it's predecessor, Forged in Dreams and Magick.
The love story between Susanna and Robert was well done, though the pace seemed little quick. However, I do understand since this is a novella, at only 160 pages. And let's face it, Bastion's writing alone captures you, as it does in book one, and once you're in the zone, it's pure entertainment. (Euphoria for a reader.)
If you've never read a Kat Bastion's book, but love stories about Scottish Highlands and their language, (yes, I'm talking to you, "Outlander" fans), I most definitely encourage you to one click, curl up and immerse yourself in one of her lovely reads. She has a way with telling a story like no other author I've read. Her fingers may be typing away, but her words will make you breath, eat and taste the world of so long ago.
Yet again this author brings out the highlander in new ways. This time the story stays within its own time and allows one woman to find a truth about her life and the things she was brought up to believe. This book keeps you wondering what will happen next. The author does not confuse her readers by bringing too much of the first book in. There are a few things here that would make a reader go back to the first book, Forged in Dreams and Magick (Highland Legends, Book 1), to be able to understand some of the things being said. This book can be read without having to follow in sequence. As the author takes you into the world of an abused and tormented young woman, she also allows you to see that if a person is willing to fight against everything they know better things can happen. Truly love these books and I can not wait to see what else the author brings to life in the Highlander world.
A great addition to the Highland Legends series! Robert and Susanna, two people who do not want love. One who has foresworn it and one who never believes it even exists. Throw in a ton of chemistry, new found friendships, secrets, and danger and you have this beautiful story that Kat weaves which pulled me right in.
There are some mysteries going on that I can't seem to figure out just yet.... someone that I really liked has disappeared and the story is going in a different direction than I originally wished to see it go but I'm REALLY liking the dark one in the story. There was a person introduced that I want to know more about...a monk who is deadly with a sword. Sometimes I find myself wondering if I missed something somewhere or if I haven't and need to just be patient for everything to be revealed in time. One thing's for sure... I will definitely be following this to the end!
