Brielle Marshall's life completely changes on a random Tuesday in high school, during a five-minute encounter with a gorgeous stranger. On her way to an assembly, a boy grabs her hand and asks if she remembers him. While she doesn't, there is something about him that reminds her of long ago. He tells her she needs to skip the meeting; that their lives depend on it.
Attracted to the mysterious boy, Brielle does as she is told—she escapes high school, with her head filled with him. He leaves, but it isn't long before he returns and she finds out the truth: that when she was an adult she traveled through time, and is now reliving her life. That she had supernatural abilities before, which she must regain. But most importantly, she needs to remember her previous life, if she wishes to avoid a devastating future…
Resurgence is tailored for a young adult audience and contains language, mild violence, and sexual situations, not recommended for readers under the age of 17.
Johi Jenkins grew up in Puerto Rico and now lives in Chicago with her husband and her furry daughter, Ripley the kitty. Johi never grew out of her young adult / paranormal romance / fantasy books obsession, and now writes in those genres.
I guess I should start off by saying how I felt when I read the final words. The book kinda blew my mind.
I'm normal not very indulgent in the romance genre so this was a very nice change of pace. The epic love shared between Brielle and James was wonderful to read about. The connection they have with each other is very strong (that's putting it mildly) and pretty much leaves the reader basking in the glow of their love.
But is it just a love story? No, and this is where the 5 stars come in. I've never come across a book with this type of premise before and I found it very intriguing and engaging. As you know from my previous reviews, I generally don't like stories surrounding time travel due to all the plot holes, but the time travel concept in this book was an amazing theory and I enjoyed reading about it as the mystery surrounding it unfolded. The reveal at the end was simply beautiful.
Supernatural powers manifested throughout the book and the reader gets to see through the eyes of Brielle as she first figures out she has abilities, then how she deals with it as she is able to control them as they get stronger.
I thought the side characters were well written and very defined, and the main plot came around full circle to be resolved nicely at the end. I would definitely like to see a second book set in this world because I just wasn't ready to let it go.
So if you love a good romance to go along with your paranormal fix, I recommend giving this book a shot. As of this review, Johi currently has it on sale for $.99. Well worth it.
Filled with a love strong enough to travel through time, Resurgence is a metaphysical love story with flair. Brielle is a senior in high school whose life takes a twist when she meets James a stranger who seems more than familiar. Suddenly, her memories expand into more than her current recollections, her instincts and body begin to change, and the epic love between her and James escalates. Johi Jenkins effortlessly combines romance with the preternatural while taking the reader on a thrilling ride.
I honestly feel like I have no idea what I just read. I'm conflicted, on the one hand it was like I was reading a romance book about a girl who has her head filled with a guy for most of the story but on the other hand, it also had a well driven plot in there too.
I thought this book was going to be about time travel and changing the future or something in the past. It seemed like more than half of the book was Brielle pining for the hot stranger who talked to her and imagining scenarios until they finally met each other and then it was just about them making out and stuff. . They told each other countless of times how much they loved each other, and I get that they're soul mates or something but I found myself rolling my eyes at times, like "c'mon, yeah I get it, get on with the plot".
I was wondering to myself when the whole "That she had supernatural abilities before, which she must regain. But most importantly, she needs to remember her previous life, if she wishes to avoid a devastating future..." part was going to happen and then it actually became more interesting after the action started to pick up. At first it was confusing when I didn't know what was driving the bad guy, Davis, to going after Brielle and James but after he kidnapped her, he explained everything to her. It made me start wondering about their powers but even that wasn't gone into detail.
It was a good story nonetheless and I look forward to the sequel where hopefully things will be explained.
I read the author's other book, The Thirst Within and enjoyed the writing, so I gave this one a go.
I found Resurgence quite interesting, a mesh of sci-fi, time travel concepts and romance for young adults. I liked the idea of finding your soul mate as a catalyst for developing superpowers. The writing was smooth, engaging, and kept me turning the pages; the story got really heated near the end.
Resurgence is the story of Brielle and James, a pair of gifted soul mates with psychic powers. Their powers develop in each others' presence and alter them physically. Something happens to them as young adults and they are thrown back in time to when they are younger, and have to find each other again.
The story was well-written and kept me turning the pages. It did not end in a cliffhanger but there were a few key items which remained unexplained, so I'm guessing there's a part two which I will be on the lookout for.
I was immediately fascinated by the blurb for this book and bought it to check it out. Paranormal romance and time-travel are 2 of my favourite genres, so I sat down and started reading right away! I read tons of YA books every year, so I have certain expectations of the YA style by now. To me, this book felt more like it was middle grade, because there was a lot of telling and not too much showing going on in the story. That made the writing style seem a bit more suitable for children than young adults, and it wasn't entirely to my taste because it made the main character seem kind of distant; I couldn't really feel her emotions. It was hard for me to get into the writing style. Having said that, I think this is a very original story and I don't regret buying it! It was very entertaining and I think I would have loved this story to death if I had read it as a child or pre-teen. If you love MG or YA books with an original take on the paranormal, you should check this one out.
