Part of a series, this book provides children with a coverage of life in the time of the Stuarts. This period is a core study unit specified in the National Curriculum for history.
A lovely little book chocked full of illustrations which details life in the time of the Stuarts. I used this as background for teaching this period as general reminders before researching further.
In the years from 1600 to 1700, there were dramatic changes in England. There were bitter struggles between the monarch and Parliament, a civil war over that fight, wars with other countries and the inclusion of Ireland and Scotland into what became the United Kingdom. When that century ended, democracy in the form of Parliament was entrenched and the power of the sovereign weakened. England had emerged as a global power and permanent colonies were established in the western hemisphere. The Bill of Rights of 1689 forever reduced the power of the monarch and established the basic rights of the people. Reading that document one can easily see the precursor of the American Bill of Rights. This short, effective primer on the history of England in the seventeenth century is a worthy addition to all middle school curricula. It is structured as short segments of text interspersed between images.
