This is some of the best flash fiction I’ve ever read.

As a subscriber to Suneé’s newsletter, I’ve read many of these stories before, but you know how it is with emails: they appear in your inbox when you’re busy with something else, or thinking of something else, or otherwise have your attention on something else, so you end up reading them with half an eye...

That’s not the way to enjoy flash fiction. I think the reason why so many people don’t “get” short-form fiction in general is the fact that, BECAUSE it’s so short, the stories require your full attention. When you’ve only got 500 words to tell your story, every turn of phrase, every word, every article, has to be carefully and deliberately chosen, and if the reader “zones out” for even a moment, they could lose the meaning of the entire story.

This also means that the occasional typo (like “draught” instead of “drought” or “queue” instead of “cue”), or a missing “a” or “an”, turns into a big deal. They don’t happen often in this collection, but they are there, and I think if this book had been one continuous story, you might not even notice.

I’m not a fan of the latter, but I suppose flash fiction has that in common with poetry, where every SYLLABLE has meaning.

But never mind that. Those things can be fixed, and I wouldn’t be surprised if they were fixed by the time you read this review. Allow me to repeat myself: this is some of the best flash fiction I’ve ever read. Every story grabs you by the collar and demands your full, undivided attention, not letting go until the very end.

If you enjoy flash fiction, you’ll love these stories. If you’ve never experienced it before, then this collection is the place to start.

Ladies and gentlemen, I believe we’ve found our new queen of the flash fiction format.

I never really pictured myself as someone who enjoyed short stories, and much less flash fiction, but I think that's something I might have to reevaluate. I found I really enjoyed this collection – once I learned to take the time with it.
This isn't a big book, but it's also not the kind of book you just breeze through. I didn't quite get this at first (I'm new to this, remember), and I dug in and read a good chunk of the stories in just one sitting. Shouldn't have done that.
I found I enjoyed the stories much more when I read them one by one, the last thing I did before turning off the light at night. That way, the idea of the story stayed with me, and the little story grew in my head and became a much larger experience.
There's the woman who's hunted in the forest, turns into a tree, and pulls the mist to her in order to escape.
There's the princess who finds dead princes all over her castle.
There's the hungover dude who wakes up to find his apartment invaded by leprechauns who thinks he's a rain god.
There's all kinds of awesome ideas that come in the form a tiny seed you plant in your head so it can grow. It's not a book to just blunder through and add to the pile.
What I'll whine about:
It took me forever to get through this book, or so it felt.
What I'll gush about:
I once heard this author describe how someone told her that reading flash fiction was like watching a trailer to a movie you knew you'd never see. This was meant as a complaint, but I think it's actually quite a beautiful way to describe the wonder of flash fiction.
Many of these stories really cold be trailers, or part of trailers. They create that kind of wonder and anticipation at what's to come, and what happens next. Sure, I can see how someone might find that frustrating, but that someone is not me.
Me... I love it.
It's amazing. It's all the good stuff of epic awesome stories, condensed into a few minutes worth of reading, and the rest plays out in my mind.
Final Words:
If (like me) you've not previously read or taken any interest in flash fiction, this is a great introduction.

Bite-sized fiction perfect for any fantasy reader!

So, if you’ve followed my reviews for awhile, you’ll probably know that fantasy isn’t really my favorite genre — I know, I know, I’m an anomaly. I’ve read a lot of EXCELLENT fantasy novels, and sometimes I do like to get sucked into fantastical worlds of warlocks and magic! It’s just usually not my go-to.

But, the short stories in this book fell into several different sub-genres. There are too many of them to review individually, but you had your “traditional” fantasy, with magic and witches and warlocks, things of that sort, but you also had dark fantasy, and you had stories that were set in the “real world” with slightly more vague fantastical undertones. As for my personal tastes, I prefer dark fantasy and vague elements of fantasy a little more than the traditional variety. So, while all of the stories were equally well-written, it was those short stories that I enjoyed the most.

The writing in this collection was excellent. These short stories were VERY short, most of them only 1 or 2 or 3 pages long. I think you could technically consider some of them “flash fiction.” But the imagery in every single one of these stories was absolutely phenomenal. I think it takes real talent to literally paint an entire world in just 2 pages, and Suneé Le Roux did just that.

As of right now, excluding my review, there are only 2 other reviews of A Spark of Reverie on Goodreads. To kick off theirs, one of the other reviewers says, “This is some of the best flash fiction I’ve ever read.”

And I have to agree.

Overall, whether you are an avid fantasy fan or are more like me and don’t read true fantasy very often, I DEFINITELY recommend this collection of stories. You will not regret it, and if there was ever a staple of what flash fiction SHOULD be, this is it.

This was well up to Ms le Roux's usual standard. I enjoyed the mixture of myths and legends, some with modern settings. I do not usually read flash fiction, and I feel some of these could be a prelude to one of the author's longer tales.
