Stone Soldiers #5

Black Knight Down

Rate this book
When a coven of witches conspire to bring down a prehistoric satellite orbiting the earth for millennia, the Stone Soldiers spring into action, encountering a mysterious, superhuman priest spouting dire warnings that the Black Knight must not be opened.

Defying orders to leave the satellite in the hands of the Air Force, Colonel Mark Kenslir launches his own investigation into the satellite's origins and finally discovers the dark forces it contains.

To combat the supernatural, the U.S. Military relies on a Joint Forces Unit of psychics and supersoldiers. Based in Miami, Florida, Detachment 1039 responds to threats conventional forces cannot handle. Stone Soldiers- men turned to living stone- work alongside a werewolf, a cryokinetic, a vampire and their enigmatic leader: Colonel Mark Kenslir- a man kept immortal by a series of curses and possessing an innate resistance to magic. Together, they are America's first line of defense from the magical and the mythical.

If there's one thing I've learned in my time on this planet it's Never Trust a Witch with Magically Enhanced Assets. Or surgically enhanced. Just DON'T TRUST THEM. That way only leads to bloody death and sacrifice. And dark magic. And possibly dinosaurs.

But don't just take my word for it. THESE THINGS HAPPEN. Seriously. Colonel Kenslir knows this. His team knows this. Because of the actions of the Stone Soldiers, the only people who don't know this are the general public.

One thing I liked about this book is that Kenslir went against the grain and defied orders. He's not one to let something evil slip through his fingers when he has the ability to stop it. Throw in a passel of supernaturals who won't let him fight alone and you get some darn good battles going down.

Speaking of which, their new friend intrigues me. He opens up a whole new set of potential problems for the team and that kind of makes me happy. Because I like watching those guys fight their way out of problems.

Fast and fun with a little bloody sacrifice on the side. Who doesn't like bloody sacrifice nowadays?

These books continue to be creative and fun. The characters grow and story evolves both from a single book perspective as well as the series. I am glad there are about 10 or more.

Black Knight Down

Once again an action filled story infused with myth. The Stone Soldiers is one of the more exciting series I have enjoyed.

In this installment, we get less of the ongoing story arch, less character development, less pages and promise of increased price in future issues. I am sated. I enjoyed these stories, but have had my fill. I will be looking for more depth in my next book series, I prefer books with 350+ pages (real and substantive pages) and more character development, than archetypes and tropes. There is a season for all things and while the fluffy light reading that these stories provide was fun, I am now hungry for a real read.
