Kindness, it costs nothing and could be as simple as a smile. Maybe you have heard of or taken part in a Random Acts of Kindness Day where people do just that, random acts of kindness showing that it is very easy and can truly make a difference to someone to be kind. Author, actress, tv presenter and advocate for children among other things, Floella Benjamin, always has a smile on her face. She says in her introductory letter to the book that smiling is her favourite thing to do and why she wrote this book. She reminds us of many of the reasons we want to smile and how it can help others.
Her story, Keep Smiling, introduces us to Vina. Vina loves lots of things, including chocolate and floppy ears dogs but what she loves most of all is to smile and her mum tells her a smile is the very best gift you can give someone. As she sets off for her first day in her new school Vina is similng, she can’t wait to be there and make some new friends. At the end of the road she gives the post lady a smile, then the grumpy bus driver… By the time Vina gets to school she is still smiling until she sees her new classroom, it’s bigger than she imagined, and she loses her smile. Her teacher suggests maybe it’s in the playground, but no, she can’t find it until she sees a small boy smiling nervously at her. Kindness, sensitivity, and the power of a smile, all in one charming picturebook.
