At seventeen, LE Franks walked away from writing for love. Jumping head first into real life and travelling the world seemed to be fair compensation until the characters in her head demanded their turn. Now, living in the San Francisco Bay Area, surrounded by inspiration everywhere, LE is finally taking off the filters and giving the stories free rein. These days, LE can be found frequently writing about sexy men who desperately need a happily ever.

LE writes M/M Romance in a unique mix of humor and drama with enough suspense to produce fast-paced stories filled with emotion and passion and featuring characters that are quirky and complicated. Don’t expect the typical, rugged hero or sophisticated businessman with the world at their feet; LE’s men are living in the margins— they’re in the middle of their journey, doing the best they can while searching for a connection to something bigger than themselves. With a little effort, and a lot of luck, they may actually find their happily-ever-afters.

When not writing, LE wrangles an odd assortment of jobs (six— both paid and volunteer), houseguests (including pro baseball players), family, and friends. Manifesting an odd combination of contradictory talents and traits, LE is tragically honest and personally deceptive and makes the best piecrust— ever.

I feel like this book wasn't finished. The biggest conflict in the book between Carlo & Angelo wasn't resolved. And whats with the ending? Totally out of left field. Lots of potential, it just didn't deliver.

The writing/editing was done well. The story could have been more interesting if it had been more focused and not scattered. Yet another book created with a series in mind that will cause a reader to spend more money to finish a storyline. At $7.99, I expect a book to close many of the detail points brought up in that story especially for those that are supposed to be the main characters! The book title and blurb is misleading in that Carlo and Angelo are what the story is about. I was expecting them with a side of the twinks. What I got was three character storylines (2 potential couples and 1 single), one of which was not likeable/believable and the other two not fleshed or finished. Too many of the mm authors are using series to build up repeat customers and this one is representative of that happening. As well, too many sex scenes for such a short book. These series are becoming more porn than story. I already quit buying one author for these flaws and I will most likely not buy another one from this author.

It's not easy to rate because there were things I really liked and things I really didn't like. I think it would be about 2.5 stars.

Like:
-romance between Kevin and Grady
-mystery of Ted's identity

Dislike:
-too much world building and back story was needed to understand pack politics and build intrigue for the next book
-angst overload
-no resolution on the Carlo/Angelo front
-wolf and dolphin joint swim felt extremely forced
-confusing sex scenes (one scene had 4 guys and I got confused on who was doing what to whom)

Like others have said... expensive, scattered, confusing... Feels like a whole lotta backstory and no forward momentum to the plot set up. Almost DNF, but I usually like the authors so I pushed thru regretably. I probably won't buy any more of the series. I don't like feeling cheated.

It was so bad that Satan is very good guy comparing to this. I think somebody would like it but definitely not me.
Characters - sketchy and illogical
Plot - had holes, however at the beginning it seemed promising.

For full disclosure this novel was given to me for review by the authors, LE Franks and Sara York. However, my review is unbiased and based on my opinion only.

Basic Plot:

This book is divided into two parts: Angelo and his struggle to get Carlo back into the pack as the new returning Alpha, and the second part Carlo’s beta’s search for lovin’ on the South Carolina Beach. We are introduced to two humans, Kevin and Grady, friends who might be more, but first they have to realize that each one loves the other. Are they ready to settle down and commit to love?

Background:

Before this book, I had no knowledge of either author, although I did have this book on my Amazon Recommend list, so maybe it was fate. I was in the mood for some for wolfie lovin’, thus the excitement for this book was high! Let’s take a look at what I thought.

Angelo:

On the surface, Angelo is what we could call the stereotypical Alpha werewolf. He is our warrior leader: tough, rough, and practical. He altered his life for the better of the Pack and for Carlo, even if Carlo does not realize it. We see this responsibility from the beginning of the novel:

It would be a relief to walk away from South Carolina and everyone he knew if it also meant leaving this mess behind. The part of his mind hardwired to his inner wolf snarled at that thought. He wasn’t fooling himself. The pack would survive without him but he couldn’t slink away in the night without fixing the current situation.

I loved Angelo! I love a character who fights to make things right and take the hard way, knowing that it is the best route, even if it is not the easiest route.

Carlo Montefiore:

Get ready, when you first meet this character, you’re going to think he is some sort of conceited punk. But we come to understand that how his father died and how Angelo took over the pack deeply scarred young Carlo. Now, he is becoming the man he should become. The time we see him on his own is actually vital to his character development as we can see him journey back to being the Alpha of a pack he was born. I loved the picture that Ted painted of Carlo:

He still wondered if one day he’d see Carlo standing on the front steps, his chin high, telling the world he didn’t give a damn, that he was gay and an Alpha.

Carlo has more depth than we think and I look forward to seeing him grow.

Strong Points:

I enjoyed the back story and the cultural descriptions that we get for this werewolf culture exists. We get to learn about how the Montefiore family came over to America and how the family dealt with being werewolves. I enjoyed the time the authors spent letting us get to know them.

The tradition of speaking Italian within the Montefiore family had been passed down to Carlo and Angelo, along with the other rights and responsibilities of being an Alpha. The Elders objected to Angelo’s lack of Montefiore blood when Con began training Angelo as Alpha. Eventually Carlo joined him in the lessons. Con’s decision proved to be prophetic at his death. Without that foresight, the pack would have been in shambles.

This strength of creativity and complexity is the strength of the novel, the politics of the werewolf culture is what kept me interested. However, in this case, the strength can also lead to the weakness. The entire focus of this book (on the werewolf side) is how the conflicts and misunderstanding of that transition phase has colored both of their future vision. When we got to see Carlo and Angelo together, it was magic and I wanted to find out what happens between them.

The authors spent time developing secondary characters Ted and Joey. What we realize is that Ted and Joey are Carlo’s only true friends and they are the only ones he trusts. Once we understand that, it makes the character development time with Ted and Joey more important. While they were interesting, I really could not have cared less for their sex interest in the two humans.

What could be better?

I have two issues with this book and they connect. The authors spent a great deal of time focusing on the human beach neighbors of Carlo: Kevin and Grady. The only HEA we get is theirs and as far as I know they have no real connection to the two main characters.

To be perfectly honest, while Kevin and Grady’s story might be sweet, I had no urge to find their conclusion. It seemed like the filler sex scenes because the authors knew they would not get to Carlo and Angelo’s love life. Which I guess that would be fine, but I would have rather have had no sex and see more of Carlo and Angelo. What I found interesting though is that I actually found Ted an incredibly interesting character. I hope he gets his own book!

I hope that we get to focus more on our Carlo and Angelo than any other side characters.

While this style is not my favorite, your mileage might vary. In fact, if you like this series, you might like Poppy Dennison’s series, Triad.

Conclusions:

Overall, I enjoyed the novel. While I gave the book a three star rating, most of that is because this was just the beginning of the story and I was not satisfied with the ending. I would have rather just had the story of the werewolves and kept the main story going. But, I did not write this book, did I? So I will just trust that the authors have a plan and their pace is slower than my impatience.

I have a feeling, that as the book(s) continue and we see more of Angelo and Carlo together, I will improve the rating. I think that, if you enjoy reading a story in a serial fashion, you will love this book. We get a great beginning look into the culture and the ending sets us up for the next conflict. I can’t wait for the next book!

This book was all over the place ...It needed an editor that would tell the authors "WTF is this, take it back and fixed it."
Kevin and Grady are completely unnecessary and their whole romance is good enough for another short story maybe...
I realised that they exist purely for the end where they but other than that they are useless! I was expecting the story to be for Carlos and Angelo not two twinks.
I got dizzy with all the characters that were introduced and the whole mess the relationship between Carlos and Angelo.
Too many POVs ,which had at least the format been in a way that made it understandable that it was different people, it would have been slightly better. It wasn't though and I had the feeling that I was reading 3 different books.
Overall, nice try but not worth the money or the time to see where it leads...

Review written for MM Good Book Reviews

Carlo is an Alpha wolf but he was sent away from his pack when he was forced to go to a college, now he has returned but he turns his back on the responsibility of the pack like they turned their backs on him. Angelo has had to look after the pack as the only other Alpha, but now with Carlo finishing college he can hand over the reins and think about his career in the military, what Angelo never counted on was Carlo refusing the Alpha role and staying away from the pack. Kevin and Grady are humans who are reconnecting their friendship with a holiday at the beach, falling in with a couple of wolves proves to be an interesting time and forces them to confront their feelings for each other.

This is a very cool book that has a couple of different story threads that blend together to make for a very interesting read. Carlo is bitter, Angelo is angry and neither man will step back. While Angelo was following Carlo's fathers instructions he inadvertently drove the younger wolf away, now Carlo wants nothing to do with either him or the pack. Carlo has started his own small pack with two friends, living by the beach but his friends are still young wolves who can't keep it in their pants. Joey and Ted set their sights on their new neighbors and nearly end up in sever trouble during a party.

Well, there is a lot going on in this story that grabs your attention, there are some mysteries that need to be solved and some very deep hurt feelings that might never be repaired. Okay, well... hmmm where to start, well for the last several years Angelo has been the Alpha of the Montefiore pack looking after it for the true Alpha while he is in college.... unfortunately he didn't handle it properly and Carlo thinks he has been forced out of the pack so Angelo could have it to himself. Angelo has an attraction to Carlo, and Carlo has an attraction to Angelo but Carlo is very bitter and their dealings are angry and bitter. Ted is a wolf from a different pack but his background is a mystery, Joey grew up with Carlo and is a complete horn-dog. Kevin and Grady are two cute guys who just happen to be staying next door to the wolves.

I found this story to be intriguing but packed with confusion as to what is going on. There is very little page time between Carlo and Angelo and what there is, is confrontational and angry, and you can't help feel that if Angelo had handled things differently years before, then he wouldn't be having the problems he is now dealing with. Carlo is bitter and it is blinding his future, you can understand why he felt abandoned but his hurt is driving him. There's some pack politic's that emerge that I am sure we will get a clearer picture of as the series continues, but for now we are left with questions and a rough direction of where the story is going. The only thing that I really couldn't work out was the involvement of Kevin and Grady in the story, yes they made a great side story and their involvement produced some really hot sex, but other than their involvement with the wolves making them confront their feelings for each other, it didn't really expand the storyline.

I recommend this to those who love shifters, confrontation, bitter feelings, pack politics, explosive sex, and a twisty ending that leaves you intrigued and wanting more.

Carmine-”I don’t care who you are, or what you do. But if you hurt my family ever again, I. Will. Gut. You.” The last said with a grin and a promise that sent a shiver up Carlo’s spine.”

Carlo Montefiore has returned to South Carolina after four yeas away at a college in California. After Carlo’s father Constantine’s untimely death, Angelo became Alpha of the pack until Carlo was old enough to take his father’s place. Due to wounded pride, misunderstandings, miscommunication, and pack politics, Carlo has refused to have anything to do with either Angelo, or the pack. Between trying to avoid Angelo, keep his roommates from chasing the gorgeous human twinks next door, and not revealing the existence of shifters from the humans, it’s a wonder that Carlo is still sane.

Prodigal Wolf by LE Franks and Sara York is the first in a new series called Wolves and Waves. This is a character driven tale with a plot flow that is anything but smooth. It jumps from one event to the next without making much sense-one minute you’re reading about Angelo, then Boing! Carlo, then Boing! Grady and Kevin, the human neighbors, then Boing! Carlo’s friends Ted and Joey. The story itself had me going “huh?” until about two-thirds of the way through the book. During a series of flashbacks, we do learn why Carlo has cut himself off from the pack, and why he hates Angelo so much. The sex between some of the secondary characters is smoking hot, without being over the top. I LOVED the hilarious scene where Joey has to pretend to be a dog after he makes the drunken mistake of shifting, then going into the yard of Grady and Kevin-the human next door neighbors. The story has a HEA ending for some, and a bittersweet ending for others, but you do get a sense that the tale is just beginning. This book just didn’t do it for me, but if you like reading about sun, surf, sand, and shifters, then this is a story you should check out.

Angelo is ready to step down as substitute alpha and let the true alpha wolf take his place. First, though, Angelo will have to get the stubborn wolf to meet with him.

Even after four years, Carlo knows he is not ready to have the rules and responsibilities of being the alpha of the pack. More than that, he is not ready to see the man who has made his heart twist painfully in his chest each time he glances at him.

Angelo has to find a way to get Carlo to take over. The twenty-year-old leaves with his spirit full of anger, resentment and hurt. Now that he is twenty-four, Angelo is hoping that Carlo is a mature grown wolf who will fit into his role as the true alpha, without too much hardship. But Angelo should have known that, when it comes to Carlo, nothing is ever simple. Has enough time passed for these two strong-willed wolves could to find finally peace and ease the desire that always seems to flame up between them?

Parts of Prodigal Wolf have great storylines. The overall plot is solid. However, there are so many characters involved, along with many subplots that at times I feel completely lost. The dynamics between Angelo and Carlo are impressive, explosive and leave no doubt in my mind how strong these two characters are. Most times, the story flows quite nicely, but there are a couple of times it feels stilted and forced. While some of the questions I have are answered, by the end of the book I still have many more that are left unanswered. I feel like I should read the second book in the series when it comes out because I need the answers to those questions.

I will be totally honest with you; I started this book and could not put it down. The characters, the world building and the drama that comes from all of these men just sucked me in and wouldn’t let me go. Now, if you like a book that is wrapped up happily at the end with a bow, this book is not it. I would have to say this book was like a very long prologue. We got to meet the packs, we got to meet all the players in the game and we got a glimpse into the history between all of the characters. The way the book was written was wonderful. I loved the main characters, Angelo, Carlo, Ted, Joey, Kevin and Grady. The thing I really appreciated was getting to know the secondary characters just as well. I have a feeling everyone I met will have a role in the series and I cannot wait to find out what those roles will be.

Shifters aren't my favourite genre and I admit that I struggled with this one. There was nothing much different to the 'normal' pack rules so that part was fine. I did feel the story jumped around a bit and I felt that I had come in part through, but on checking this is book 1 of a series.
I felt there were contradictions and I wasn't sure if it was serious or humourous - it was both to me but not sure what the authors intended.
I did have to keep myself reading and as befitting the start of a series, lots of threads are still unresolved. Kevin and Grady got their resolution, but as the non-shifter neighbours, I wasn't sure how they added to the story and felt unsure as to the hot/cold reactions to them.

This is a M/M Shifter short story.
The story was short and sweet. However I did feel there were too many unanswered questions. Too many story lines and the characters could have been more developed. I think if the rest of the series only focuses on one or two story lines at a time it will be an amazing series. Hopefully the next book will answer a lot of the questions I was left with. I know it may not seem like it from my review but I think this was an amazing short story and I can't wait to read the next book. I RECOMMEND THIS BOOK!

I found it very hard to get into this book. I thought from the blurb that this was going to be about Angelo and Carlo's relationship/love story but that was not the case. Too many other characters were put front and center and there was barely any indication of any type of relationship between Angelo and Carlo by the end of the book. I know it's a series but for me at least, there wasn't anything that grabbed me enough with this book to continue reading.

3.5 I loved this book until about 2/3rds of the way through and then it suddenly seemed to be more the story of a couple of minor characters. Their story was resolved and then the book was finished, and I was left going huh, where's the rest. I wanted more resolution re the main characters, and I'm very curious as to Ted's story as there seems to be much more to him than meets the eye.

Nice set up for the next story.
