Jazz Exercises Minuets Etudes and Pieces for Piano - Second Edition | Jazz Piano Method and Technique Book for Intermediate and Advanced Players | Instructional Sheet Music for Students and Teachers
(Keyboard Instruction). Legendary jazz pianist Oscar Peterson has long been devoted to the education of piano students. In this book he offers dozens of pieces designed to empower the student, whether novice or classically trained, with the technique needed to become an accomplished jazz pianist.
Perhaps not since J.S. Bach has a maestro been as concerned with the well-being of his pupils as Oscar Peterson. Bless his insanely talented soul.
When I decided to take up the piano again after a ten year absence I came across a video of a five year old girl working her way through Jazz Exercise #3 from book #3 in this terrific series. I simply had to learn this piece, but it was way over my head a year ago. After a lot of really hard work I can play it now (more or less), along with few other pieces from this book which serves as a bridge into jazz for pianists unfamiliar with the genre.
I love this version of Exercise #3 and it better reflects my imperfect playing but also my deep desire to squeeze as much out of this wonderful little tune as I possibly can. I have a long way to go but at least I can say that I play jazz piano and keep a straight face.
