Bridget Grant is back in Paradise. Paradise, North Dakota, that is.

She's swallowed her pride and moved back to her hometown with her daughter after her divorce and the loss of her catering company. Now she's trying to navigate the strained relationships she'd left behind—including her first love, Jack Davison.

Jack never forgot Bridget, or the day she left town—and him. When Bridget caters a lunch at Jack's tourist ranch, old flames reignite. They have more in common than ever—Jack's also a single parent. Though they both try to keep things casual, Bridget, Jack and their girls are starting to look a lot like a family.

But Bridget's only planning to stay in Paradise until she's saved enough to relaunch her business. Jack's invested too much in his ranch to leave. And with their daughters involved, both have a lot more at stake than heartbreak. How can they risk falling in love?

Jana Richards has tried her hand at many writing projects over the years, from magazine articles and short stories to paranormal suspense and romantic comedy. She loves to create characters with a sense of humor, but also a serious side. She believes there's nothing more interesting then peeling back the layers of a character to see what makes them tick.

First and Again by Jana Richards is a moving, emotional story about second chances and coming home. My heart broke for the characters and I got all teary-eyed in certain places. If you're looking for a feel-good romance, pick up this book. You won't regret it. I look forward to reading more from Richards.

Hero Not So Heroic

I so wanted to like this book. I appreciate that the couple was a little older, and I truly did think that some of the complex storylines included in this book were well done, namely the shifting relationships between the heroine, her mother, sister, and her former tormenter as they truly grew in understanding of each other as well as the evolving relationship between the daughters of the hero and heroine. In fact, I think the secondary storylines were better than the romance. My problem? I just could not like the hero. I didn't like the way he treated his daughter, and I didn't like the way that he treated the heroine; through his actions, he made both the females feel bad—his daughter he made doubt herself (she even seemed to live in a bit of fear of him at times) and he made the heroine walk around on eggshells so she didn’t bruise his delicate ego and perhaps earn a low-blow comeback or shatter a fragile peace. I kept hoping that he would improve on both counts, but he didn't. I thought he was kind of a jerk and at times a controlling bully. And I can never get behind a story where I just don't like the hero.

I received a free copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.

Bridget moves back to Paradise with her teenage daughter, after the loss of her catering company and the breakup of her marriage. She's planning to be there for a short time, only until she can save enough money to open another business. She's not comfortable with her mother and sister, having always felt somewhat inferior to them, even though they've tried to make her feel otherwise. Jack is single again, with a darling and very sweet daughter with Downs Syndrome. He moved back to Paradise, and is running a dude ranch. He's extremely overprotective of Leslie, and not always in tune with her true capabilities. I really liked this book - an older couple trying to find their way together, and after so much hurt in the past, can they forgive and move one? Both of them fall in love with the other person's child, and the girls love spending time together. This was an emotional read, and a bit long, but a very heartwarming second chance story.

A second chance romance between divorced Bridget Grant and rancher Jack Davison both have daughters. Rebecca/Becca is Bridget's daughter and Leslie is Jack's daughter. There is family and love for them all in Paradise, North Dakota, if her ex Ben will leave them alone. I enjoyed reading this story. This is the 5th book I've read written by Jana Richards; she has done a great job at writing a good book; I can’t wait to read more of her books.

The story line caught my attention at the very beginning and kept me interested throughout the entire book.

I loved the chemistry between the characters.

Returning to Paradise, North Dakota, to move herself and her daughter back in with her mom, was the last bitter pill Bridget Grant had to swallow after a failed marriage and business. She had no choice, she was penniless and in order to get her feet back under her, she would have to suck it up and work in her mother's bar and motel, instead of what she trained for, as a chef. Her relationship with her mom and sister had always been strained, to say the least, so being in close proximity would take some adjusting. But, she had promised her daughter that she would do whatever she needed to save up enough, so she could relaunch her business and leave Paradise behind once again.

Jack Davison is surprised to find that Bridget hasn't changed much at all in twenty years, she is as beautiful as the day she left him behind. Owner of a ranch just outside of town, Jack caters to tourists wanting the 'western' experience. When he finds himself without a cook for an important customer event at the ranch, he is able to strike a deal with Bridget, whose daughter is in desperate need of a healthy distraction, horses. And as it turns out, Jack is a single parent of a rather special girl himself.

With Jack's kitchen well in hand and the girls spending a lot of their time in the stables, Bridget and Jack automatically see more of each other. When almost forgotten sparks start coming alive again between them, both have their own reservations about taking their re-found friendship to another level. Bridget's plans for Paradise seem to be temporary, and Jack is a tad gun-shy, based on his experiences.

Since neither can seem to keep their hands off each other, casual seems to be the agreed upon way to proceed. Although between the four of them, they are starting to come awfully close to resembling a family. The hearts that both Jack and Bridget were so carefully protecting? It appears they may already be lost.....

*****

'The grass is always greener on the other side'

Funny how a lot of stories, regardless of what the plot seems to be, have a return to the hometown as a backdrop. So does this story, it tells of disillusionment, betrayal, family dysfunction, and how to rise above, and learn to see your own role in what you have always perceived to be the fault of others, circumstances or fate. Sometimes you have to go back to where you came from, in order to see where your place is.

I see a tremendous amount of character growth in this story. Quite a few valuable lessons here. Everyone seems to be convinced one way or another, that they are doing the only absolute best thing possible. Problem is, everyone has tunnelvision. It takes some pretty hard knocks to shake those blinders off and it is heartbreaking to discover, that despite the absolute best of intentions, you may not have done the right thing after all. That happens a lot in this story....... having to take ownership for the way history has played out.

On the flip side of that, is with taking ownership, comes the ability to finally recognize the beauty of what you have before you.

In the case of FIRST AND AGAIN, there is a family relationship that can finally be appreciated at full value, one child that can finally see the benefit of a loving father and another who will finally have an opportunity to find out how far her abilities can reach. Then there are Bridget and Jack, who are no longer held back by misconceived ideas or expectations.

Sometimes it takes a while for us to grow up.......

It was a pleasure to read this book.

✨Insightful, poignant, heart-warming and just plain lovely.✨

At First Sight: After a bad divorce that left her broke and dealing with a surly teenager daughter, Bridget Grant is back in Paradise, North Dakota, the town she left at 18 swearing she would never go back.

Bridget always felt out of place in Paradise, while her mother and sister quickly made of it their home, and she's not happy to be back as a failure, working at her mother's bar and barely making ends meet. Worse of all, Jack Davison - the guy she loved but left behind - is back in Paradise as well.

Trying to give her daughter some incentive to behave, Bridget is forced to contact Jack and make a deal with him: he'll help him cater an important business lunch and he'll give her daughter riding lessons in return. And arrangement that no only brings them together, but also will force Bridget to face her fears after a reception gone wrong a couple of years before, which destroyed her business in San Francisco.

Jack doesn't really want to get tangled with Bridget again, not after the way she left him, but her daughter Rebecca needs his help, and she's really nice to his own daughter, Leslie, who has a disability, so he's willing to try to help Bridget out, as long as his heart doesn't get involved.

Second Glance: First and Again was a fun book to read, it was interesting seeing things from both Bridget and Jack's perspectives. Particularly regarding their kids, Jack love his daughter but he treats her like she's useless and helpless because he hasn't quite dealt with what having a disabled kid means. Bridget is so dead set to shield her daughter from her father's indifference that she has practically turned into a doormat for Rebecca to bent her anger on.

But when the four of them are together, they balance each other out so well. Bridget is convinced Leslie can do more and sees that the way Jack has been bringing her up is just making her very vulnerable in the real world. On the other hand, Jack can talk to Rebecca when they are tending to the horses, and indirectly helps her see that maybe her own father isn't so great since he never pays attention to her.

That's where the book shines, when it shows what a wonderful family these four would make.

The problem comes when dealing with the couple stuff. Jack is always perfectly willing to believe bad things about Bridget and Bridget never quite grows a spine to tell Jack or her ex what she really thinks.

And the ending is quite rushed.

Bottom Line: First and Again is a fun read for the most part, though it's not perfect and could have used a little more development in the relationship department.

Who ever said you can always go home never had to. Bridget Grant is back in Paradise, her hometown trying to get her life back on track. After her business with her now ex-husband went down the drain it just seemed like everything followed. Her daughter Rebecca started acting out so Bridget went home to her mama to try make her life better. She couldn't wait to get out of Paradise and now she realizes that maybe life there wasn't so bad. She has family that loves her and a man that even after all these years she still wants and maybe even loves.

Jack has been back in Paradise for a few years, raising his daughter Leslie on his own and running the ranch he bought. He'd be lying if he said that he hadn't thought about Bridget all these years, because of course he had. She was his first love and she left him. He doesn't trust women and he doesn't do relationships. He takes care of Leslie, doing everything for her because of her disability, she requires it. When Bridget comes back and starts telling him he's too over protective and should let her live a little, he flies off the handle. Who knows better than he for his own baby girl.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It was about coming home and realizing that sometimes home is exactly where you need to be. It's where people want to help you succeed and also where enemies of the past can turn out to be your ally. Going home doesn't always have to be a bad thing. Watching Bridget and Jack take their journey, ride the ups and scatter at the downs was interesting. It was also nice to watch Bridget lose the chip she had on her shoulder about her family. Very easy read. Check it out and leave love for the author in the form of a review!

Favorite Quotes:

“Going for a walk?” he asked.
“Something like that.”
“Need a ride back to the motel?”
“No thanks. I don’t accept rides from people who laugh at me.”

“I have a punching bag,” he said, his eyes on the road ahead.
“Excuse me?” she said, confused. Had she missed part of this conversation?
“When I can’t get things or people to do what I want them to do, or when I’m just plain pissed off, I go down into my basement and beat the hell out of Bozo the Clown.”

She stared at his profile. “Bozo the Clown?”
“I have an old Bozo punching bag, you know, one of those toys that’s weighted on the bottom so it keeps popping back up. Bozo takes a licking and keeps coming back for more.”

This story is of love, laughter, heartache, betrayal and a new start. This story is about learning from your mistakes. Bridget is a single mother after a divorce and failed business. She moves back home and works in her mom's bar and motel instead of being the chef she is trained to be. Then you have Jack who also is a single dad and owns a ranch and is suddenly in need of a cook for an event. Jack asks Bridget to be the cook for the event. Over time they become friends and as time goes on the attraction between them grows. Will they let the past go and open their hearts to each other? Or will they realize their friendship is more important and just go back to being friends? You will have to read it to find out. This is a great story and it pulls you in as if you are in each scene. I hated for it to end.

Is they deserve second chance for each other or is something not going to happen them ?

Firsts is special as always but is Bridget going remember their sparks between them?

First and Again is an engaging read, filled with rich and interesting characters that grab the reader straight away. They were believable and readable because of their flaws, and the challenges each of them faced. The reader easily becomes absorbed as the characters travel a journey that leads them closer to each other, and I loved the underlying message of family and the importance of relying on others to succeed.

The aspect that really set this book apart for me, was that each and every character in this novel was rich and you found yourself forming a relationship with all of them, not just the lead characters. The romance between Bridget and Jack was well-balanced and an enjoyable read. It was human and believable, but still had a decent heat factor to make it entertaining for the reader. Jana Richards weaves a story that is heart-felt and it offers a depth many authors fail to achieve. She also infuses friendship and light-hearted humour, which leaves you with the feeling that you genuinely know and will miss the characters once you put the book down.

At its heart, First and Again is a story about second chances – not only in love, but with family as well.

The connection between Bridget and Jack is one that no matter the passage of time, it never quite severed. However, sometimes throughout the course of the story, there seemed to be a lack of communication. Jack was very quick to judge and Bridget had spent so long being a doormat to her ex and child that she couldn’t (or wouldn’t) stand up for herself. The romance, while well-written, was not as strong for me as I would have enjoyed. It seemed to focus more on the familial relationships than the romance between Bridget and Jack.

First and Again is delightful! Full of tender scenes involving pie making, ranch life, and the trials of being a single parent. Plus, reunion stories are my favorite. But First and Again is also about reconnecting with family, figuring out what's really important, and having the courage to go for it. A wonderful, cozy read!
