When We Were Friends

Rate this book
Four friends, one big secret... and the journey of a lifetime. It’s nineteen years since they stopped speaking to each other, but now Morgan needs to contact her three best friends from Paige, Emily and Tiff. Her teenage son wants to meet his dad and Morgan can’t ignore his requests any longer. And Paige, Emily and Tiff all knew what actually happened back then. Even if that was what led to their friendship group falling apart, they’re the only people Morgan can think of who might be able help her find the man who disappeared without a trace before she could tell him she was pregnant. Can Morgan persuade her old friends to go on a road trip to track him down? As adults – with marriages, children and a whole bucket-load of their own problems – will they be able to work together to solve the mystery? And if so – just when forgiveness for the past looks like it might be possible – how will they cope with the biggest shock of all? A story about love, families and how the people who know you best are the ones you will always need in your life. Totally heartbreaking, brilliant, uplifting fiction for fans of Jill Mansell, Paige Toon and Sheila O’Flanagan.

Samantha Tonge is fast becoming a favourite of mine. This is my sixth book by the author and she has never disappointed me. Her books are always realistic with relatable characters that find themselves in real-life situations. The plots are always engaging and the writing style always communicates information effectively.

When We Were Friends is a book about old high school friends who have fallen out and have been out of touch for close to twenty years. This book ticked a lot of boxes for me, it’s women’s friendship fiction with a bit of a mystery and a lot of secrets. Morgan is the main character and she gets her own chapters with her point of view. Her three friends Paige, Emily and Tiff share their chapters but also get their thoughts across. I loved the different points of view, every character added something to the plot and I felt like I got to know them very well. I also appreciated how the young man was portrayed. I won’t say too much as I don’t want to give anything away but we never know what someone is going through.

It’s very sad that three friends lost touch during all that time but it was such a happy feeling when they reconnected, even if it was rough going at first. What I took from this book is that it’s never too late to make amends or forgive the past, there is still time to grow up and learn about life when you’re in your thirties, and mistakes you make as a teen don’t have to carry on forever. I was shocked by the big reveal and loved being so surprised! Well done to Miss Tonge for that, you got me. This was a lovely, thought-provoking story about forgiveness. It broke my heart but eventually put it back together again.

Four school friends, Morgan, Emily, Tiff and Paige are the members of the “Secret Gift Society “. At their prom they vow never to lose that valued friendship. This was 19 years ago and they haven’t spoken since. What happened that night to sever their strong bonds? In the present day, Morgan is having issues with her teenage son Olly who wants to know who his father is which she has never revealed. Morgan decides it’s time to let bygones be bygones and gets in touch with her three former friends as she needs their help.

This has more elements to it than the usual women’s fiction genre as it contains elements of mystery with deeply held secrets that have seriously impacted lives. The premise of the novel is good as it explores betrayal, amending past mistakes via reconnection and forgiveness. This is done well as you witness how each character has changed or not since that pivotal night.

The characters feel authentic and I especially like Morgan who is the central protagonist here, although all are well portrayed so you get a sense of their differing personalities. It captures them as teens as well, they are perhaps somewhat naive but mostly good hearted and it conveys their adult wariness and resistance to each other as 35 year olds.

It does become a bit convoluted when the plot gets a bit busy although this does mean there is rarely a dull moment. However, there is some needless repetition which slows the pace. There’s one aspect of the storyline that makes little sense to me as the characters unnecessarily head first to France and then to Cornwall????

Overall though it’s a good enjoyable read with many positive aspects and I would happily read this author again.

With thanks to NetGalley and especially to Boldwood Books for the much appreciated arc in return for an honest review.

One Liner: Got many positives but somehow doesn’t hit the mark

Morgan is living a life contrary to what she wanted as a teen. Being a single parent to a nineteen-year-old is exhausting. Things get worse when her son, Olly, is determined to find his father. Morgan hasn’t even revealed his name. Olly continues to persist, and Morgan has no choice but to reach out to her three friends and ask for help, even if they have been estranged for years.

Paige, Emily, and Tiff are leading their own lives, happy yet unhappy. They have different reactions to Morgan’s request. After all, the best friends hurt each other and broke apart. Will this be their chance to reveal the secrets, apologize, and heal? However, the four friends have to deal with many truths before they can move on.

The story comes in the third-person POV of the four main characters in neatly marked chapters.

My Thoughts:

The four friends, Morgan, Paige, Emily, and Tiff, are well-etched. They have their strengths and weaknesses and are flawed people. Even their interactions feel genuine. None of them is perfect, making it easy to root for all of them. Olly makes a strong impression despite having limited coverage.

Though the focus is on Morgan, we get enough details into others’ lives too. The presentation is neat and clearly structured. We know whose POV (all in the third-person) we are reading at all times. However, quite a bit of it is ‘told’ to the readers, which dilutes the impact.

Friendships and relationships are messy, and this book reflects it well without making it too dramatic. It also has many lessons about boundaries, forgiveness, healing, acceptance, moving on, etc. They blend well most of the time.

The writing is easy enough to read but tends to get repetitive. More than once, I got tired of the supposed secrets that almost came out, but something happened to prevent the reveal. This method should not be overused. The same goes for how Emily makes people share information. That was overkill.

My issue is with how the second half is structured. There’s a major reveal at 50%, with hints about the whats and whys. However, the actual story isn’t shared until after 90%. Moreover, there are many clues to guess everything. Either the clues should be fewer, or the reason should be out sooner. I’d go with the latter, given the plotline.

The main characters are 35-36 years old. Somehow, they sound a decade older. They are weary, I get that. But the vibes don’t feel like I’m reading about people closer to my age.

The book would work on screen. It has the elements to become a nice TV drama (the bittersweet kind). The ending is hopeful, though I wouldn’t have said no to more details. In fact, I’d have liked it if there was another chapter exclusively for Olly. I think he deserves it.

To summarize, When We Were Friends is a good read about school friendships, teenage mistakes, and attempts to reconnect as adults. Despite the heavy themes, the book doesn’t get too intense or stressful. It’ll make a decent one-time read.

(Rounding up to 4 stars after much thought. 3 stars do seem a little less.)

Thank you, NetGalley and Boldwood Books, for the eARC. This review is voluntary and contains my honest opinion about the book.

Four friends with a secret, Morgan, Paige, Emily and Tiff all grew up together and form the secret gift society , on their prom night Hugo Black reveals all that causes the biggest rift imaginable, and it is many years later when they meet up again.
Morgan pregnant and sixteen, her son is her life then at eighteen years old wants to know his father. this is when she needs her three friends the most, then the email for the alumi news comes through and leaving a message TSGS meet at the usual place 10AM 25th February at Dailswood high would they all turn up? there is a whole full of secrets ready to come out from everyone of them not just Morgan but can the friendship stay strong enough?
WOW this is one book that will keep reading flicking page after page, I loved the story as it untangles a lot of cobwebs along the way. The author once again captures real life dramas and more that takes you on a journey into any place.
A fabulous read once again.

BLOG TOUR REVIEW

Review for 'When We Were Friends' by Samantha Tonge.

Read and reviewed for Samantha Tonge, Boldwood Books, Book & Tonic, NetGalley and Rachel's Random Resources Tours.

Publication date 4th October 2023.

This is the first book I have read by this author but it most definitely won't be my last!!

This novel consists of a prologue and 39 chapters. The chapters are short in length so easy to read 'just one more chapter' before bed...OK, I know yeah right, but still just in case!

'When We Were Friends' discusses some topics that may upset some readers or may not be suitable for others. I like to point this out ahead of time in my reviews so you can judge if this book is for you or not. In this book Samantha discusses/includes bullying and violence to a child.

This book has fantastic descriptions that set you straight in the scenes. The cover, title and synopsis suit the storyline perfectly.

Where the heck have you been hiding all my life Samantha!!! Love, LOVE, LOVED this absolutely beautiful page turner!! An absolute must read!!!

OMG!!! I to get stuck in to all of Samantha's previous books!! They are just guaranteed to be stunning!! I absolutely adored the unique storyline which is hard to come by when it comes to books as there are so many out there but Samantha has created an absolutely beautiful storyline!!!! Many people have had close friends as children that they no longer have has adults for several different reasons. You may have just lost touched, moved away or fallen out. Do you ever think how life would have been different if you were still friends? Do you regret losing touch? This book tells the story of four friends who were humiliated at their school prom by someone who broke their close friendship apart. As adults one of those friends, Morgan, decides to bring the friends back together as adult. When they were school friends they had formed the 'The Secret Gift Society' where they would each use their gifts of logic, kindness, empathy and a sixth sense to solve problems and mysteries of their fellow students. Morgan reaches out to Tiff, Paige and Emily to ask for their help in solving one last mystery 'The Case Of The Missing Father'. However, it wasn't just as children these friends kept secrets from each other but they are still hiding things. Can these friends put their past behind them to help Morgan or will history repeat itself? An absolutely stunning book that takes you from Manchester to France to Cornwall on more and take you on a rollercoaster ride of emotions. This is a story filled with friendship, secrets, forgiveness and a few unexpected twists!!! I was completely invested in this book from the very first page and was hooked throughout. I just could not put it down and ended up devouring it in one sitting!! Samantha's stunning evocative writing skills really do bring the locations, emotions and the characters to life!! This is one of those books that is very easy to read and perfect for any reading situations whether you are laying on a beach or curled up in front of a fire. It is an absolutely ideal read for anyone who is looking for a beautiful and heart warming read that will have you hooked from beginning to end. I absolutely LOVED the realism of this storyline which made it so easy to picture everything that was going on which had been helped by Samantha's fantastic evocative writing skills. I cannot wait to get hooked into more of her books so I hope she is busy writing her one while I get stuck into her previous books!! This is definitely one of those books that will turn a frown upside down and make life seem a lot brighter. Grab your copy today and fall in love with The Secret Gift Society today!!!

Well done Samantha on an absolutely beautiful book!!! This may be the first book I have read by her but I cannot wait to get hold of more books by this extremely talented author!!!

The characters were all an eclectic mix and each one of them were realistic and strong. I was completely invested in them all. It also makes them more realistic, believable and made me feel even more for them than I normally would. They each had their own unique personalities with positive and negative behaviours. Morgan is a single mum who has devoted her life to her teenage son Olly. She works in a supermarket and has put her dreams of going to university on the back burner so her son can go. She was the logic of the gang. Emily used to work as a nurse but is currently on sick leave and is seperated from her husband. Emily brought kindness to the group. Tiff used to get bullied for being on the larger side but is now a well known actress and brought empathy to the society. Paige owns her own business helping companies make money through learning others body language and signals. She is married to Felix and had a 'sixth sense'. I absolutely loved all of these women and each brought out many different emotions as I was learning more about them but one thing they had in common is that they are all strong women, they just don't all know it yet. I loved learning about them as individuals as well as seeing their interactions with each other and seeing their friendships and relationships change and develop throughout.
There were just so many amazing characters that I loved getting to know that I could write about them all day but I don't want to bore you so I'll start to wrap it up here. Each of the characters are memorable and unique in their own ways and they are a group that I wont be forgetting any time soon! Before wrapping this up though I do want to mention 'Madam Moo Moo' who I absolutely loved and she just goes to show how much of an impact a kind adult can have on a child and I also want to say that this book just goes to show that you should never take someone for granted or judge them until you know everything about them and what they are going through!! A thought provoking and amazing group of unforgettable characters!!!

Pick up this book and get lost in this absolutely gorgeous page turner! This has got to be one of the most heartwarming books I have ever read 💜!!!

Congratulations Samantha on an absolutely stunning read that I just could not put down!!! I am absolutely mind blown that I have never read any of your absolutely gorgeous books yet!! I am looking forward to reading more of your previous and future books. I would absolutely love to see this book turned into a movie!!! Welcome to my favourite author list and here's to your next success 🥂

Make sure you read to the very end of the book to read the first chapter of Samantha's 'The Memory Of You' which promises to be just as gorgeous as this book. It is one I'm definitely looking forward to reading myself!!

Overall an unputdownable, gorgeous, STUNNING page turning book filled with holidays, regrets, memories, forgiveness, friendship and so much more!! A perfectly relaxing, thought provoking and stunning unique read!!!!

317 pages.

This book is just £1.99 to purchase on kindle, free with kindle unlimited and £8.99 in paperback at time of review via Amazon which I think is an absolute bargain for this book!!!

Rated 5/5 (I LOVED it ) on Goodreads, Instagram, Amazon UK and Amazon US and on over 30 Facebook pages plus my blog on Facebook.

Feel free to add me on Goodreads or follow me on my website or Facebook for more reviews.

Samantha Tonge’s “When We Were Friends” left a lasting impression on me. The story follows four childhood friends, Morgan, Paige, Emily, and Tiff, who reunite after many years apart. The reader is led on an emotional trip as they navigate their past and present lives, highlighting the strength of friendship and the intricacies of life.

Samantha does an excellent job of conveying the ups and downs of friendship and the obstacles it can bring. I appreciated the well-developed characters and fascinating narrative; the writing was excellent.

Anyone who appreciates a decent story about friendship and life should read this book. It’s a story that will stay with you long after you’ve finished reading it.

Thank you to Boldwood Books for the invitation to read and review this ARC.

So I don't know... Brilliant synopsis, great expectations, and then came the reality of reading the book... Meh.
Starting with the Hugo's huge secret. Gah. So long building up to the great revelation that went "pop" and what? That's all? That was it?
The friendship between the girls/women - so predictable. The whole story so predictable. Writing tending in the direction of very clever, very thoughtful, smart and enlightening, but the golden mottos and one - liners felt so flat and forced and not genuine. No real people speak like Olly with his mother.
The plot feels like going in circles, repeating the same things over and over again. I waited for something that will make me go wow, but allegedly. Please don't take me wrong, in the end it was an easy, light - hearted, not demanding read that already has tons of praising reviews, I probably expected too much from this book, hoped for something that will do the synopsis justice. It just doesn't hit the mark, it feels too forced and more than once I felt tired with the secrets that almost came out, but no, not yet.

I am really generous with my ratings today.

In their school days, Morgan, Paige, Emily and Tiff were inseparable – with the help of their “superpowers”, which were the different character traits they each possessed, they felt stronger together and stood up to the bullies, setting up the Secret Gift Society to solve others’ problems too. Until, on the night of their prom, their friendship was blown apart by a boy with his own agenda – turning on each other too, the hurt was deep, and their estrangement has lasted for nineteen years.

In that time, their lives have moved in very different directions. Morgan became a mother – her ambitions to be a maths teacher abandoned, but the wonderful relationship she has had with her growing son largely making up for that. But now he’s on the verge of university himself, and their relationship is faltering a little – he needs to know more about his father, but he disappeared before Morgan even told him she was expecting. She needs help, and reaches out to her former friends – one last job for the Secret Gift Society, if they’re willing, and if they’re able to let each other into their lives again and put aside the issues that divided them.

While they all agree to engage, the path to renewing their friendship proves to be a difficult one. Their lives have been complex, and they each have secrets they’re unable or unwilling to own up to or to share with the others. Added to that, they need to try and understand what happened all those years ago. And those different elements make it a totally compelling read – and a particularly difficult one to review, because it’s so very important that every reader should share their separate journeys.

These were four women I really took to my heart – not immediately with some, but as their stories emerged and those secrets were slowly uncovered (sometimes with substantial shock waves attached – there’s one that I defy anyone to see coming!) I really felt for every single one of them. And while the women themselves are wonderfully drawn, so are the supporting characters – the men of the story, the childhood bully now in an unexpected role, and the fondly remembered teacher who shows the same warmth in the present day as she helps and supports their efforts.

This is such wonderful writing – the complexity of the characters who are entirely real and live on the page, the wholly unexpected twists and turns of the story, the exceptional degree of emotional engagement. I absolutely loved this book, and couldn’t recommend it more – impossible to put down, and totally unforgettable.

I am a sucker for books about friends, and have a real soft spot for plots with multiple friends. In that regard, When we were Friends touched my happy place.

When a horrific-to-high-schoolers truth is revealed in front of everyone at prom, the friendship and their “Secret Gift Society” (a made-up friendship club) of Morgan, Paige, Tiff, and Emily explodes. The four have never spoken since.

Nineteen years later, Morgan’s truth is exposed and she calls an emergency meeting of the Secret Gift Society. The women are no longer the carefree, rose-colored glasses teenagers they once were, life and the prom experience having changed them all dramatically. However, through twists and turns and a bit of sleuthing as back in the day, the women come to terms with their past and forge a new path to adult friendship.

When We Were Friends has so many positives that it is worth the read, and anyone who ever went to high school, ever had a friend group, or ever needed their girls as adults will enjoy When We Were Friends.

Author Samantha Tonge doesn’t leave anything to the imagination, so don’t expect to need to turn the page to find an answer; it is spelled out to the nth degree. A bit overkill in this regard, but still a decent read.

Thank you to Boldwood Books and NetGalley for the opportunity to review this ARC (advanced reader copy). All opinions are mine and this review was not compensated.

Skillfully weaves a poignant tale of evolving friendships from high school to adulthood.

Samantha Tonge's "When We Were Friends" takes you on a captivating journey through the complexities of friendship, from high school to adulthood. Meet Morgan, Paige, Tiff, and Emily, former members of the "Secret Gift Society," a tight-knit group born during their teenage years.

The story begins with a shocking revelation at prom, shaking the foundations of their unbreakable bond. Fast forward nineteen years, and Morgan's truth surfaces, leading to an urgent reunion of the Secret Gift Society. Tonge skillfully guides us through their evolved lives, crafting a touching tale of rediscovery and resilience.

The novel beautifully captures the essence of high school friendships and the impact of life's twists on enduring bonds. Tonge explores the web of secrets and misunderstandings that strain even the strongest connections, resulting in heart-wrenching losses and separations.

Amidst the emotional exploration, a compelling subplot unfolds as one character embarks on a suspenseful quest to find her child's biological father. This journey, full of unexpected twists, adds an extra layer of intrigue, creating a captivating blend of suspense and emotional depth.

While Tonge's transparent storytelling is commendable, some may find the narrative a bit explicit, with answers spelled out in meticulous detail. Despite this, the overall enjoyment of the read remains intact.

However, a critique lies in the pacing, with certain segments feeling prolonged. The slow progression may leave readers yearning for a more dynamic rhythm to the narrative.

Thank you to my partners, Rachel’s Random Resources and Boldwood Books and the author. I appreciate the gifted eARC, and I am leaving this review voluntarily!

1. 𝑭𝒓𝒊𝒆𝒏𝒅𝒔𝒉𝒊𝒑 - Can friendship survive from high school into adulthood? It definitely cannot when their world is blown up by the one boy that secretly connected them.

2. 𝑷𝒂𝒓𝒕𝒏𝒆𝒓𝒔𝒉𝒊𝒑 - We get a glimpse into the perils of adult relationships - romantic, friendly, and familial. There are always hardships along the way, and our characters have to figure out how to mend them.

3. 𝑴𝒂𝒕𝒖𝒓𝒊𝒕𝒚 - Thank goodness we tend to gain a great deal of maturity as we age. However, with our group of friends, it is apparent that it is easy to slip back into the grasp of immaturity when so many memories are linked to those times.

4. 𝑯𝒐𝒍𝒚 𝑺𝒎𝒐𝒌𝒆𝒔…𝑾𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝑰𝒏 𝑻𝒉𝒆… - I mean let’s talk about a twist! Whoa 🤯 This one caught me so off-guard! It’s one of those twists that leave you picking your jaw up off the ground. 👏🏼 👏🏼

5. 𝑺𝒆𝒄𝒓𝒆𝒕𝒔 - As with many stories, secrets are endless in this one. And once again, so much pain could have been avoided had there been honesty. (And again, then we wouldn’t have a great story to read!)

I really wanted to like this book but I couldn’t unfortunately. There were lots of spelling errors throughout, how they never got noticed is a shock.

I found the storyline dragged on as well. I do love Samantha’s books but this one weren’t for me.

I have liked other books by Tonge, but this story of four high school friends torn apart by one vindictive and bullying boy was a struggle for me to get through. When I'm reading an ARC, I work very hard to ignore sloppy editing, as I know I don't have a final, ready-for-publication manuscript in my hands. And my rating on this book has nothing to do with the poor editing, but this ARC is in the worst shape of any I've read to date. From the very beginning, there were inconsistencies and issues that had me turning back regularly to check what I had actually read. That aside, these four girls, all outcasts in their own way, were supposedly the very best friends ever in high school, and they had a sweet little club that solved small school crimes and wrongdoings. Loved that part! Maybe a whole book about that would be a great YA spin-off? However, with all that eventually happened, I just couldn't buy that these four were truly friends of any depth in the first place. The quantity of secrets and betrayals amongst them was mind-boggling. There was also a lot of "I have a secret but I won't share it with you, the reader," which is not my favorite device, and one that is best used sparingly. The characters' behavior and motivations and even their dialogue just didn't seem consistent with who they were on the page. Most of the book occurs in the present day, when the women, wary and distrustful, agree to reunite to help one of them track down that aforementioned vindictive bully - who is the father of that woman's son. Yes, that sentence is ridiculously convoluted, but so is this plot. There are some lessons to take away about grace, forgiveness, and the ability to change, as well as the impact that bad home situations can have on every other aspect of life. In the end, though, this book was not a good fit for me. And I really hope the editing team steps up/has stepped up to the plate before the October release! Thank you to NetGalley and Boldwood Books for a digital review copy.

This is a huge book hiding between the pages of what could easily be dismissed as light-hearted women’s fiction. It’s not until the layers of each character start to unpeel that it becomes more obvious how complex the character’s lives have been. Morgan, Paige, Emily, and Tiff share a bond that was tied at school and seemingly broken at Prom. I’m sure that many of us can identify with that scenario, but equally have resurrected friendships that had long seemed dead.

Each of the women is hiding a dark secret that they each want to protect for fear of the impact the truth may have. Not for fear of upsetting anyone, but to avoid the judgement that may follow such revelations. Their childhood friendships flourished from the character strengths that they each brought as superpowers to their group. Citing logic, empathy, kindness, and intuition, their shared ability to solve mysteries helped to create their Secret Gift Society.
I immediately warmed to Morgan and wanted her to track down her son’s father, Hugo, with or without the help of her friends. Emily also seemed to be very kind, and I felt for her as she fought for her own happiness. Tiff and Paige took more warming to, but it soon became apparent that this was all part of the way Samantha Tonge had orchestrated the story.

I loved the way the former friends set about searching for the elusive Hugo, discovering more about his move to France and then his return to the UK. Mlle Vachon was a character that I could immediately envisage, and she brought back warm memories from my school days.

I absolutely loved this book and cannot recommend it enough. If you’re anything like me, it will evoke fond memories of school days and maybe even move you to reconnect with former friends. It’s never too late and can be wholly wonderful.

When We Were Friends by Samantha Tonge

I received an advance review copy for free thanks to Rachel's Random Resources and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Blurb

My Opinion

There is no doubt about it, if Samantha Tonge has written it I am going to be reading it. I was hooked from the opening pages of the book, in fact I was almost late for work as I didn't want to put it down. I really enjoyed the way that Samantha revealed secrets, dripping them out to keep the reader interested.

If you want drama, then this is the book to read. If you have lost touch with your high school friends then you will really appreciate the contents of this book. With a great deal to unravel, make sure you have plenty of time when you start reading this book as you will not be putting it down.

Thank you, NetGalley, and Boldwood Books, for a gifted copy of this read.

This latest release by Samantha Tonge delves into the intertwined lives of four individuals who share a deep and meaningful bond. However, their relationship is put to the test as they gradually reveal their innermost secrets to each other, resulting in a gradual deterioration of their once-solid connection. This deterioration leads to heartbreaking loss and separation, highlighting the devastating impact that secrets and misunderstandings can have on even the strongest of friendships.

In the midst of this turbulent backdrop, one of the women featured in the story finds herself in a desperate situation - she needs to locate her child's biological father, who vanished before she even knew she was pregnant. This quest for answers takes the reader on a suspenseful journey, full of twists and turns, as the woman and her close friends engage in some detective work to uncover the truth.

Throughout the novel, the reader is presented with a raw and honest portrayal of the complexities of growing up and the importance of having a reliable support system amidst life's inevitable messiness.

Although I found this read enjoyable, I must admit that the slow pace of the storyline left me feeling somewhat disappointed. Specific segments appeared to linger unnecessarily, and their composition could have improved.

Despite this, I recommend this to anyone who appreciates a tale of friendship, love, and the power of human connection, or for a small book club read within your circle, as I am sure there are many readers who could relate to these characters.

Wow I couldn't get enough of this, from the incredibly intriguing opening chapter, to the fact that there seemed to be some many secrets to be revealed - including some that truly shocked me, this is one rather impressive book.

I absolutely loved it.

Morgan, Paige, Emily and Tiff were so close when they were at school, until Prom night when their friendship was ripped apart and they haven't spoken in years. But Morgan needs help tracking down her son Olly's father, and she knows the only people she trusts to help her are The Secret Gift Society.

AFter all they have a track record of solving mysteries, even if they haven't spoken. But whether they will agree to help, and whether they will reconnect and become close again, is hard to tell initially.

It took me a while to get the other three ladies separate in my mind, partially because while Morgan had her own chapters, initially at least the other 3 were given chapters between them, changing focus part way through the chapter, so was easy to get a bit lost briefly.

And wow besides what happened to split them up, there is so much more to be delved into. I was enchanted, gripped and addicted. There is so much going on, in this book and the whole time you are aware that there are almost certainly more revelations due, but I couldn't guess anything.

And some of the background was shocking too, but also made you understand some of the characters that bit better.

Another absolute gem of a book from Samantha Tonge, and long may it continue.

Thank you to Boldwood Books and Netgalley for this copy which I have reviewed honestly and voluntarily.

When you were a teenager did you have a friendship that was so strong that you just knew was going to last forever, and yet it didn't. I did. I became friends with her at a church camp and once we clicked we totally clicked. We spent a lot of time together and we talked about everything, especially her love life (mainly because I didn't really have one), past future, everything. In our first jobs we ended up working quite close to each other so we would meet for lunch. And then we went on holiday together, came back, and that was it. We were no longer friends. Even now I can't tell you what happened, and I have thought about it a lot over the years.

Morgan, Paige, Tiff and Emily had a friendship like that. They were thick as thieves all through high school. Together, they were the Secret Gift Society, always having each other's back and solving small mysteries for others as well. They were inseparable. The difference between them and my friendship is that they all know exactly what happened to end their friendship. It was explosively, spectacularly destroyed in public at their school dance and they have never spoken since

Nineteen years later Morgan needs their help. Her 18 year old son really needs to know who his father is, a secret that Morgan has never told anyone. She puts a coded message in the alumni newsletter asking The Secret Gift Society to meet up, not knowing if any of them will see the message, let alone show up. They do, although it is reluctantly as the hurt that was caused on that night so long ago has left a lasting impact on all of them.

The big question that kept swirling through my mind while I was reading was whether it was possible to renew a friendship after nineteen years of being apart? Morgan, Emily, Paige and Tiff were inseparable as teenagers, sharing their dreams, listening to music and fawning over all the cute boys, until one night, when everything fell apart. They all shared a secret from each other that came to light the night of their prom. After that, it was impossible for them to trust each other and they went on with their lives until Morgan sent her friends a cryptic message because she needed their help. All of them had issues they were dealing with and I was surprised they decided to help Morgan in her quest to find her son’s father. Most of the women only agreed to help her because they felt sorry for her son Olly, who was just an innocent bystander in their long-standing drama.

Throughout their journey, they all came to realize that being together again helped them with the struggles they were having. I was shocked at the big secret that was revealed during their search for Olly’s father, and I was certain that this information would forever tear them apart, but I was wrong. The bond they had from long ago was still there, and I was pleasantly surprised by the positive and meaningful ending. Friendships come and go but for Morgan, Emily, Paige and Tiff, reuniting was what they needed to go on with their lives.

I had tried another of the author's works before and decided to give another one a shot. Four teenage friends were inseparable before a monumental event had them all turn against each other. All four get a turn narrating their own thoughts in this book because it is vital for us to have a complete picture.
In high school, the four used their individual specialities to figure things out for others. They fancied themselves detectives, and when one of the people they ended up figuring things about collects enough to drive them all apart.
Now, eighteen years later, one of them needs help to find this villain again. They end up taking a trip abroad, and each of their personal wishes about what they want out of their group outings are different.
I found the one main twist surprising, and that is the main reason I found myself reading all the way through. The author managed to justify the situation and lay out the events that followed in a very believable fashion.
Time is not kind to almost all the people we encounter in the narrative, and they all try to do their best with what they have.
It is a multi-cast narrative that focuses entirely on how different each person is from the other and how that difference is why they work well together.
I received an ARC thanks to NetGalley and the publishers, but the review is entirely based on my own reading experience.

You can tell by the title that friendship is absolutely central to the story. Four school friends, mow grown up and estranged, come together to solve a mystery which shocks them each. Dredging up memories from the past, you see how they all had secrets at the time and in fact, have secrets now, which gradually percolate to the surface. Each of the characters are quite different in personality and talents and it is interesting to see how their lives have panned out.
Family is also linked into the story, in all sorts of ways, not always good. The girls, as school friends, had a tight bond but it is surprising how quickly that seemed to dissolve. One of the points of the story is to see how resilient friendship can be. You soon realise that people had different motives for their behaviour and often were trying to protect themselves. Teenage insecurities around behaviour and appearance were so important at the time. I did find that there are several genuinely surprising elements to the story and one huge shocker of a secret which I had not seen coming.
In short: highly recommended for well-drawn characters and an entertaining plot.
Thanks to the publisher for a copy of the book

Four friends on prom night, nineteen years ago
A revelation then, away their friendships go.
They've not been in touch for all those years
After that night ended with them all in tears.

Now Morgan's son is determined to meet his Dad
He's eighteen and the news makes Morgan sad.
She's brought him up alone for all those years
And meeting his father again is something she fears.

A school reunion newsletter, a chance rifts to heal?
But Morgan isn't sure how her old friends now feel.
Each have problems of their own but will they solve the mystery
Of where her child's father is or should she really let it be?

A story of strong friendships torn maliciously apart
And the opportunity now for a fresh start.
Will searching for someone they used to hate
Reconnect them now - could this be fate?

A moving story of secrets, friendships and regrets
Along with relationships that time hasn't let them forget.
A moving story with a mystery to solve, too,
And rifts to heal to help them all pull through.

A story filled with emotions and family dramas to explore
With relationships and secrets along with so much more.
For my complementary copy of this book, I say thank you,
I throughly enjoyed reading it and this is my honest review.

I am very conflicted in this review. It had all the checks of being a good book, brilliant synopsis, great expectations, and then came the reality of reading the book... Meh.
Let's start with the main secret, the BIG one, the one that broke up the friendship. Ugh. The author made it seem that there was going to be a great revelation that went "pop" but all it did was deflate like a used balloon. That's all? That was it?
Let's move on. The friendship between the girls/women was so very predictable. It's much like every friendship we all have in high school. There were a few twists that made me feel like the book was going to be worth finishing but the golden mottos and one - liners felt so flat and forced and not genuine.
The plot feels repetative, the same things over and over again. I waited for something that will make me go wow, but nope, it didn't happen.
I suppose I should look at this as an easy, lighthearted read, a palate cleanser per se. I just wished that it had done the synopsis justice. It just doesn't hit the mark.

This is such an emotional story that really drew me in. It’s the story of four school friends, Morgan, Tiff, Emily and Paige, and their ‘Secret Gift Society’ that they formed at school. Each girl brings her own ‘gift’, and each girl has her own part to play. Things are not always as they seem, and things come to a head on the night of the school prom, resulting in a fractured friendship. Nineteen years later, and each girl has travelled along her own path in life. Morgan is a single mother with an 18 year old son who wants to know the truth about his father. Morgan has no choice but to contact her former friends for their help. But will they help her? Can you ever go back? This is an emotional story about friendship, secrets, lies, and women empowering women. It’s beautifully written, with a great cast of characters that I easily engaged with, and a storyline that I really enjoyed. Recommended

When We Were Friends is a story that draws you in and you can't put it down until all is right in the world! Four teenaged BFFs share everything with each other and even create their own secret society. They are so close and have no secrets from each other ----or do they? After a devastating falling out at their school prom, the four girls go their separate ways vowing to never see one another again.
Fast forward nineteen years and one of the girls - now a grown woman - needs the help of her old friends to find the father of her now teenaged son. This is a great story of friendship and honesty. Can old friends forgive their youthful mistakes and move forward or do the wounds go too deep for repair - and do they really need each other after so many years?
The story grows on you as the author reveals the secrets and heartaches that each woman has carried and tried to bury.
Thank you to NetGalley and Boldwood Books for the arc in return for an honest review.

This book was really good. Although I frequently read romance books, this book hooked me. I found this book so intriguing and honestly could not have predicted the ending. This book was such a good read. It took a bit to get into it, but then I was so into it.
Spice: The main plot of the book is based around a woman finding the father of her son that she had as a teen, so there definitely is a mention to sex in it. But it isn't the main topic of the story and the story more focuses on friends and their journey. There is no explicit and not even really any closed door. It happened but it isn't described at all.
I would highly recommend this book. It has so many plot twists and turns. This would be such a good movie. Its different than a lot of books I read, but really good. One thing that was kind of confusing was all of the different point of views.

When at school four girls were so close they were like sisters. They were all from different backgrounds and felt that each one had a gift- a special something, so they formed “The Secret Gift Society”. Morgan had logic through her love of maths and solving problems, Emily had kindness through looking after her mother, Tiff had empathy and Paige had a sixth sense, an intuition. They put these skills to good use and solved several issues for other pupils accordingly. Now it's nineteen years later and Morgan feels her son Olly should know who his father is- something she’s never felt able to tell him. She rallies her old friends to try and find him- only the last time they met there was a huge falling out and none of them have spoken to each other since. Can they get over the rift, let bygones be bygones and help out their friend and perhaps themselves at the same time as one of them has a secret which could blow the whole thing apart?

There is always something rather special about Samantha’s books. It’s a look at life from different perspectives and what some of us see or don’t see in our daily lives. Characters which many can relate to in one way or another bring real life home to the reader. Of camaraderie and that special friendship bond where nothing can stand in the way- keep swimming like Dory! 555. If you know, you know!
