In New Zealand's urban and rural wildernesses, there is an abundance of food just waiting to be discovered - if only you know what to look for, how to harvest them and how best to use them. This book will tell you how.
Johanna Knox is the author of The Fly Papers, a new mystery-adventure series about mutant carnivorous plants. She was inspired to write these books while wondering what the carnivorous plants in her own collection would be like if they developed minds of their own.
Plants loom large in Johanna's working life. She has had a regular spot on National Radio's This Way Up chatting about foraging for wild weeds, and keeps a popular blog about the same subject. She also frequently writes for magazines such as Taste and Good about plants, food, and sustainable ways of living.
She's always happy to talk about writing, the wonders of carnivorous plants, or both.
This book has already helped me start to use some of the "weeds" in our expansive garden. The recipes are all accessible, and I appreciate that there are no assumptions from the author about prior knowledge.
An index would be highly beneficial, though, and while I love the illustrations, I had to refer to other sources to ID plants.
Overall, it's an inspiring and informative book that I would happily recommend to foragers in New Zealand.
Definitely more of a reference book than a read from cover to cover book but I'm glad I read it. I learned quite a lot from it and will definitely refer back to it as I learn more!
