Nicely written but I did not care for the heroine. Did not like her previous boyfriend was 20 years older than her either. She was too sophisticated for me.
I will agree with another reviewer. Did not like heroine's previous boyfriend was 20 years older than her. She was too sophisticated for me and and even cold at some parts.
4.5 stars Princess Ava uses indifference as a mask to hide her feelings and her need for her father's approval. Security expert J. Wolfe has seen first hand - in his parents marriage - the devastating side of love. Ava is looking for love and marriage. Wolfe likes his affairs short and simple. You can't find two persons more different. Their first encounter is funny. The banter between these two strong headed is witty and fun to read. Wolfe ruffles Ava's regal feathers but she gives as good as she gets. From the start, the attraction between them is scorching hot, but one night is all they have. But when Princess Ava's life is in danger, Wolfe is assigned as her bodyguard. Between sparring and fighting their ever- present chemistry, they get to know each other better. And love is not far behind. As a typical HP's hero, Wolfe is slow on the uptake, but he gets there eventually.
This could have been a good story if the characters had been better developed. What others see as witty banter, I read as witless, charmless rudeness and bad manners. I disliked the heroine, Ava, and quite frankly would have liked Wolfe to have gone off and found himself someone less unpleasant.
Their meeting at her friend's wedding where she gets caught by security trying to climb a wall was funny and I thought that was a good start! Then it went downhill. Ava's response after they'd had sex was so witless and nasty and unreal. She wasn't a virgin so she should have been able to behave so much better. She was rude and unnecessarily antagonistic. I was simply irritated.
Ava is supposed to be struggling with self-esteem issues because her father the king, has never treated her properly because she is a woman. The problem I have with these Royal stories is that I live ina country which has had a female monarch since the 1950s and no one would ever suggest that she is powerless or ignored or treated badly because she is a woman. And she inherited the throne in 1952!!!
Anyway, the thriller plot was that her life is in danger after her brother has been assassinated and Wolfe is appointed to find out who, and guard Ava. It simply descended into farce. Her responses were over the top and totally ridiculous. Anyone in her position would have been used to lifelong security protocols and the idea that she would so wantonly reject and ignore advice from a security expert beggars belief.
I am all for the element of fairytale suspension of disbelief in Mills and Boon but when elements start to knock you out of the story - you know it's over. I've enjoyed a couple of books by this author but this one failed for me. Sorry - 2 stars because it's still rather well written and it passed an entertaining hour.
I did lik this book a lot. The banter between Wolfe and Ava throughout the book had me smiling. I read it in one shot without a break. I wanted to know who wasbehind those attacks and it was good entertainment. Ava’s reaction to having a security detail was a little weird, since royals are supposed to be used to it. She acted to too naive about her life being in danger which did not seem plausible. Overall, it was good.
I didn't like it, the plot and dialogue bored me. Hero had just ended his last relationship (5 day thing) a month before. He thought about that other woman several times (not that he missed her) and I kept thinking she would pop up with a pregnancy. Wasn't a fan of hero wanting to get "laid" by someone other than the heroine because of what he was feeling for the heroine. As for the heroine I didn't like her better than the staff attitude. Np.

Ava had to attend the wedding of her ex-fiancee. It wasn’t a hardship – she and Gilles had been friends all their lives and they’d never really had a relationship. It was just assumed they’d marry someday, but he found someone to love – and that meant Ava had to pretend she was putting on a brave face, even if she was secretly thrilled for her old friend. If she had to be completely truthful, she was also a little jealous that he’d found the thing she never had. True love. Read More
Duty At What Cost? by Michelle Conder was a very good book. Some tried to kill Ava. Someone did kill her brother. Now she will be Princess of her country. Wolfe is hired to protect Ava. They fall in love but fight it.
Duty At What Cost is a good book. Ava is a really level headed, not into living the princess lifestyle lady. While Wolfe is a love jaded millionaire/bodyguard. Together they but heads and have great chemistry, and find what they are really looking for in life.
Excellent story from Michelle Conder! An absolute delight to read. I adored Ava, found Wolfe sexy as hell and their quippy banter and sizzling attraction kept the pages turning. Definitely a keeper!
"Conder's fantastic romance, with its sexy banter between her perfect-for-each-other couple, shines and their story is heartfelt." RT Book Reviews, rated 4 1/2 stars
