First and foremost, a large thank you to Reedsy Discovery and Bradley Cornish for providing me with a copy of this publication, which allows me to provide you with an unbiased review.
Back for another book by Bradley Cornish, I prepared myself for something intense and deeply religious. Cornish, whose books are strongly imbued with a connection to his faith, proves he can write something that keeps the reader on the edge of their seats throughout. In this piece, a man falls into a nightmare, somewhat of his own making, and lands in jail for a crime he did not commit. Now, with a new-found relationship with God, he tries to right the ultimate wrong before it is too late for salvation. Cornish does well to keep the action high and religious themes at the forefront.
Damon Faulkner thought that he was doing the right thing when he heard the lady’s scream. Forcing his way inside her house, Damon found a woman dead and the killer nowhere to be found. However, he lied to the police from the outset and fabricated what happened, even when the evidence was presented to him. Now, he finds himself in the middle of a trial for a crime he did not commit.
While Damon struggles with sleepwalking, there is no help for him, even with an attorney who tries to show the jury all the circumstantial evidence. With no attempt to use truth to proclaim what happened at any point, Damon Faulkner is sent to prison for life, narrowly missing being sentenced to death.
While in prison, a number of events take place including the loss of his wife. Damon wants to be free, but cannot see a way out. It is only after he accepts Jesus Christ into his life that he finds some form of redemption. Now, with Him in his corner, Damon tries to right the wrongs that he committed and find a way to plead for his innocence. However, with a killer still on the loose and no clues, it will take more than the Heavenly Father in his side to keep Damon from living out his days in prison. A great crime thriller with the undertone of religious redemption allows Bradley Cornish to develop this story for all to enjoy.
I will be the first to admit that I am not one who enjoys inculcation of any belief. I am fine having my own viewers and, for the most part, let people keep their own feelings. However, I love a good crime thriller and Bradley Cornish develops one here. The first third of the book is a well-paced thriller with a murder at its centre, providing Damon Faulkner with the nightmare that will be his to battle for the latter stages of the book. There is great narrative development and the characters come to life as Faulkner tries to come to terms with an inability to tell any form of the truth. Once Faulkner finds his path, the story takes on a new meaning, which is essential for some and a hurdle to a successful thriller for others. However the reader sees it, the faith-centric nature of the post-incarcerated Damon Faulkner story proves to be his key to unlocking the truth that live inside him and discovering who committed the murder for which he is serving time. Cornish pulls on many plot points and keeps his faith as a guide through this book, which is long and, at times, convoluted. I found myself struggling to see past many of the biblical verses and need for redemption as I sought to get to the core of the crime thriller. That being said, it works in the end and Cornish is able to show how a man who has lost it all can find answers, given a new focus that will lead him. Cornish does well throughout, even if the overall reading experiences was a tad long and faith-heavy for my taste!
Kudos, Mr. Cornish, for an excellent addition to the thriller genre, utilising your own angle to keep you true to the values you hold dear.
3 stars I loved that this was a faith-based novel. It's truly what reeled me in to read it. However, parts seem redundant and drawn out. I feel like this would've been amazing if it wasn't so repetitive and probably could've been a wonderful book in 350-400 pages. It was intriguing to see Damon's character and everything play out in real time. I was shocked by some of the turns and twists this book had, but many seemed expected. I loved the beginning. It really hooks you into the story. But midway through, I felt bored and had no true surprises until the ending. It was a decent read overall. I highly suggest you try this for yourself, as just because it didn't work for me doesn't mean it won't work well for you.
I received this book from NetGalley to read/review. All of the statements above are my true opinions after fully reading this book.
Side note: While my rating doesn't factor in the formating/grammatical issues with the symbols, I do want to make a point of this. As it made it very difficult to read. So many words on every page had a symbol in it and missing letters, so you just had to guess the word.
Murder, corrupt prison, loss, regret and faith. This faith based psychological mystery thriller is one of a kind.
Damon Faulkner is a delivery man who stumbles across a woman in need. He tries to save her, but it’s too late. The real killer is gone, he’s staring at a dead body and after breaking the glass to get in, the cut has bled all over the crime scene, victim, and weapon. He runs away, taking evidence with him. Before long, the police identify him, he’s jailed, goes through a trial- trying to prove his innocence. The system fails him, he feels he’s lost everything. His wife is struggling and he can’t help, he is struggling and feels alone- until he attends the church within the jail. God has new plans for him, there is a battle going on and God needs him to fight it with faith!
Overall, I was really amazed by this book. I absolutely loved it. I have never read a faith based mystery/thriller. I am excited to see more!
This book is highly recommended to all Christian mystery/thriller lovers.
Thank you to Booksirens, Prodigious Publishing, and Bradley Cornish for this ARC to be reviewed. My opinions are my own!
Second Chance Killer is an inspirational thriller by Bradley Cornish. I found this story to be interesting and at the same time complex. Damon came upon a woman being murdered and although he was innocent, he was sent to prison. The book looks at the wrongs that were done to Damon and a look at his redemption. Second Chance Killer is an exceptional book, but, it is long. I believe that the author has written a deep book that left me reading late into the night. I received an arc for free and am leaving my review voluntarily.
Damon is a delivery driver who finds himself in the wrong place at the wrong time. While making a delivery, he hears screams for help inside the home. Deciding to try to help, he goes inside only to find a murdered woman. As fear takes over, fight or flight kicks in and he runs away from the scene instead of calling for help. Wrongfully convicted, Damon turns to God after feeling like he lost everything. With his new found faith, he sets out to try to prove his innocence and save the world from evil.
The grammatical errors were so overwhelming that it made reading this book very off-putting. Missing quotations, incorrect usage of punctuation, etc. On top of that, the author uses incorrect words to express his thoughts; purred instead of poured, awed instead of owed, etc. Names of certain characters were spelled different ways as well. I also felt like there were inconsistencies in he usage of names, particularly the police officers which was confusing in the beginning (sometimes they were referred to with their first names, sometimes deputy then their last names). Lastly, without trying to give off any spoilers, events of certain characters don’t match the timelines. One character died, then later on in the book actually isn’t dead. But if this character isn’t dead, why was their body in the morgue? Another character calls someone in the morning, yet died the night before.
I feel like this book would’ve benefited from being separated into two. One being focused on the thriller storyline, the other being focused on the God vs. the Devil aspect. For me, there wasn’t enough correlation between the two plots to necessarily belong together.

What an experience this was! So much to enjoy about this book including the mystery, suspense, fascinating and varied characters, atmospheric setting and moving message of faith.
An arrogant, corrupt and driven detective's biggest goal is to attain his hundredth case solved at any cost so when he encounters Damon he is blinded by his desire to succeed. Damon, a delivery man, encounters something he will never forget on one of his work shifts. The reader witnesses his topsy turvy life with his life. His involvement in a murder case changes his life and leads him from a downward slide to renew his faith in his God, an excellent reminder of His unconditional love for us. The emotions are vivid, raw and real.
This is a pacey, sharp, clever and compelling story jam packed with action and intrigue. It is so gorgeously descriptive I experienced the gamut of emotions and felt I was a fly on the wall. I was so invested at times it felt my heart had stopped. Though a lengthy book it did not feel that way as it is rich with treasures. This was my first book by Bradley Cornish but I am very keen to read everything else he has written. His writing style was what I needed and whisked me off to another world in a nanosecond with plenty of surprises on the way. For me this is the epitome of the perfect and gripping thriller. Absolutely stellar.

“You can’t turn back time, but you can turn back to Christ.” -Second Chance Killer
Mystery, murder, growth, and faith wove Second Chance Killer into a thrilling hunt for justice.
Although the beginning started unexpectedly, and the pace was drawn out, the suspense and mystery kept me reading until the end. Various written errors prevented me from fully diving into the story and successfully connecting with the characters, but even so, this book was an exciting adventure. I’d definitely recommend getting good proofreading done and some basic editing to enhance the story even more so.
I loved Damon. His character development was probably the best out of all the characters. Initially, I could feel the darkness pouring out of his life. But when I made it to the book’s last portion, the new light in his life was unmistakable and beautiful.
The story was set on Jekyll Island, Georgia. It was easy to imagine, and I found myself lost in the descriptive imagery, though the third-person omniscient POV caused the story to lack much of its clarity.
As for the emotional aspects, Cornish tackled various heavy topics, such as suicide, depression, and others, so it was inevitable that I’d shed at least a few tears. I loved how the characters were open about their flaws and brokenness, as well as finding the courage to share their testimonies. That was beautiful and so inspiring.
There was an unfortunate amount of secularism and lustful inclusiveness that seemed unfit for a Christian book. There’s one sex scene—limited on details—profanity, and uncomfortable word choices. The secular things were overwhelming and, for the most part, overshadowed the Christian aspects. Not to say God was omitted, because there were many mentions of Him–along with the Biblical history, including Baal, Canaanites, giants, etc.–more so near the end of the book. Many of the characters happened to be believers as well. Even so, something felt off.
The book ended thrillingly and surprisingly. Though it was a long adventure, it had me sitting on the edge of my seat.
I received a copy of Second Chance Killer for free, thanks to Book Siren. This review is voluntary and completely honest.
!Trigger Warning!
Gore, violence, depression, drug use, alcohol abuse, profanity, suicide attempts and mentions, demonic scenes, murder, death, anxiety, sex, sexual insinuations, lust
This book was not for me. The first third had me hooked - innocent man gets charged with murder and has to face his trial. I could get behind that. But, then the book just got way too preachy. I went in with the mindset that was going to be a thriller, but it leaned more towards a David and Goliath focused thriller.
The one star though is mostly from the publishing of this book. First and foremost, I felt the characters all had their bad personalities, but it was very inconsistent. Especially the conversations. Conversations went out of character very quickly. You can’t convince me that every man in this book is out here calling everyone “bro”.
Also, lots of spelling mistakes and grammatical errors that would, at times, get in the way of my read. I’m no grammar buff, but the level of the mistakes very pretty kindergarten…felt like the first draft got published without a proofread.
Lastly, the entire last 2/3s of the book was so confusing. So many holes that were left open. I felt like a lot of the plot developed so quickly without the basis of how did we get here.
BUT, this book does address a few topics that are important. The most important being the failure of the Justice system in America. Tied in with themes of hate being a disease festering and hurting this country.
An ordinary delivery truck guy stops to help a woman in distress, and ends up as her only murder suspect. A user of alcohol and drugs and Ambien, Damon us accused of murdering her while sleepwalking. Despite having no memory of the crime, but does remember his attempt to help someone in danger, Damon now fights for his life against a seasoned detective determined to close his one-hundredth career case. And he doesn’t care if he guilty of not guilty.,
Now Damon sits in a filthy prison cell with little way to prove his innocence and reveal the truth. Damon, discovers faith in Christ from the influence of fellow inmates and the regular church service he reluctantly agrees to attend.
The first half of this very long book, is a faith based thriller with many well placed scripture references as It explores guilt and redemption. For me, the second half slowed way down went off in the deep end. I struggled to finish but I wanted to find out what was going to happen to Damon who after receiving Christ, asks to go by his middle name David.
It seemed the book needed to go through another edit before being published. Note: this book has a lot of characters to hen anew ove us introduced get it registered in your mind,
Thank you NetGalley for sending me an ARC for this book.
Damon Faulkner is a delivery driver that ends up in the wrong place at the wrong time. He is delivering a package to a house when he hears a woman's screams. Not knowing what to do, he decides to invesrtigate. He breaks into the house and finds the woman dead on the ground.
I could not get into this book. I think the main reason was all the random special characters in place of letters. Like, it be be O$cer or random exclamation pints. I know that ARCS are undedited copies, but i just could not get throught it.
I think that when this book comes out, I will give it a nother chance, I love murder mysteries, and this book seems like it has a great premise.
Thank you again to NetGalley for givng me a copy of this arc.
Second Chance Killer is a faith-based thriller that will keep you reading until the middle of the night. A delivery man tries to save a customer, but instead bungles his way through the murder scene and into being arrested. His prints and blood are at the crime scene, but what would be his reason for killing? The system fails him and he is sent to jail where he finds redemption at the prison church. Follow his journey through what God has planned for his life. Love the idea of this book. The characters and plot are well thought out, and there are enough twists and turns to keep your attention until the twist at the end. Thanks to BookSirens for the ARC of this book.
This book started off really well, with a lot of potential, but towards the middle, it took a really weird turn. It was so bizarre that I had to skim through most of the second half. As a Christian, I was really excited to read a story that was faith-based, but this was not at all what I expected. This book also had a ton of spelling/grammatical/punctuation errors, as well. Sentences would abruptly end without making sense. The wrong form of words would be used. For example, through instead of threw. It happened over and over, so it wasn't just a one time mistake. It was just overall not a great book.

Second Chance Thriller is a story about a man, Damon, accused of a crime. There’s one problem. He can’t remember any of it. Was this a product of his chronic sleepwalking? Did he actually commit the crime? How will he get himself through this?
I felt this book overall was a good read. I felt it was a little long and drawn out. Though there were parts where I feel the author could have shortened, the book is very descriptive, painting a full picture for the reader. The book was slow at times but overall the book kept me engaged for the most part!

The book started off like it was going to be a good thriller suspenseful redemption novel. I'm spiritual, but I'm not religious. That being said, the story after the first quarter took a big turn and kept spinning it's wheel into religion repetitively. It's only so much I can take about the redundancy of the religious believers and non-believers aspects that proceed to dominate the storyline of what I initially liked in the beginning. I just couldn't continue reading anymore of it after Chapter 81 because the perception I had was lost. I'm surprising myself I kept reading that far, I tried to see if it would get interesting but it stayed bland.
Second Chance Killer had an interesting premise, but it didn’t quite deliver. The story started off promising, but the pacing quickly slowed down, making it hard to stay invested. While there were a few moments of suspense, they were overshadowed by underdeveloped characters and repetitive plot points. I was also disappointed by the crude language and unnecessary sexual descriptions of female bodies, which felt out of place and detracted from the overall experience. Some plot twists were predictable, while others felt forced. The writing felt uneven at times, making it difficult to fully immerse in the story. Overall, it had potential, but the content and execution left me underwhelmed.
Hold onto your seats, folks, because Second Chance Killer is a heart-pounding ride that'll leave you breathless! Imagine waking up to find yourself accused of murder, with no memory of the crime—all thanks to some serious sleepwalking issues. Damon's story isn't just about solving a mystery; it's about digging deep into faith, redemption, and uncovering hidden truths. This book packs a punch with its suspenseful twists and turns, making it a great read for anyone craving a thrilling story that's as gripping as it is inspiring. Grab it now and get ready for a wild adventure! 🕵️♂️🔍
Second Chance Killer is a great blend of thriller and faith-based redemption story. Damon Faulkner finds himself in a nightmare scenario, accused of a murder he can't remember committing due to his sleepwalking. The suspense builds as he races against time to uncover the truth and clear his name, all while grappling with unsettling revelations about his community's past. I enjoyed reading this book because it skillfully weaves together intense action with deep themes of faith and forgiveness, making Damon's journey thrilling and emotional.
Not a bad book but awfully long. It is centered around a man that it wrongfully accused of murder and sent to prison. It has all the good tropes in a book you want, thriller, hope, loss, faith. Good book just wish it wasn't so long. I love that he finds hope in the end, it ends good, and I love that everyone loves a happy ending. The length is my only negative thing. For my first book by Bradley Cornish, I'd say it's a good one. Might have to read more.
Damon tries to to right but makes major mistakes, like telling the truth from the beginning. Though it wouldn't matter in this case. when then entire law enforcement and and judicial system is rigged and all are quilts. Plenty of corner surprises and sad times. The book will draw you in. Is there someone who will believe Damon and life. Can the truth be told about the modern slave system of prison?

This book bridged the gap between spiritual and fantasy world. I love how the author presented Damon’s story interestingly. Damon wanted to life different secret life, opposite to the life he presented his wife. In the process of trying to cover up his misdemeanor, he got himself into a fix, then he remembered God. If you are a reader who loves suspense, crime with the flavor of spirituality, then this book is for you. I thorough enjoy this book and I recommend it for other readers to pick up.
I honestly had to DNF this book (60% through) which I have never done before. The amount of grammatical errors made it hard to read at times. The first 1/4 of the book storyline was well written but once you get about half way it starts to become more confusing with plot and character lines as it seems to almost have two story lines. The book becomes very religious/faith based about 40% of the way through the book making it at times hard to follow the original story line.
I wanted to like this book. It is a faith-based book. However, i could not get into it. It was choppy. The ideas didn't flow smoothly, and details would pop up in the middle without any type of warning. For example, an addiction. It follows this character without any whisper of addiction, then bam! He has a problem. I think the premise is good, but it needs some fixing.
Thank you to NetGalley, Bradley Cornish, and prodigious Publishing for the opportunity to read this book.
Compulsive and gripping! Suspenseful, addictive and complex! A very well-written book with wonderfully-interesting characters. The suspense builds at just the right pace as the story unfolds. Will keep you swiping the pages furiously. Worthy of your TBR list.
*I received a complimentary ARC of this book from in order to read and provide a voluntary and honest review, should I choose to do so.
The story is quite different from your normal Christian thriller or dystopian novel and the first two parts were intriguing, but the third part was somewhat over the top, the bad guys too bad, the political innuendos too simplistic. Interesting new story, but the writing style is disappointing. I'm aware that my copy was just an ARC and not the final text, but typos and grammatical errors were quite distracting. I hope there will be quite some good editing and proofreading that will make the story smoother and about a third shorter.
Thanks BookSirens for an advanced copy for an honest review. I enjoyed this book. A great thriller, a God vs Devil theme. I did notice there were a lot of typos (use of wrong words) , but that may be because it hasn't been edited yet. Will definitely read more by this author.
This is the first book I've read written by Bradley Cornish; I can’t wait to read more of his books.
He has written a good stand-alone book. The story is about Damon; he has become the main suspect in a murder investigation and is trying to clear his name.
This story follows a delivery driver named Damon, who made the mistake of entering a house after hearing strange noises from inside. He ends up being accused of a murder. Later, it turns out that there was the possibility of him sleepwalking and could have committed the murder. It is never clearly stated if he or someone else is the murderer. Things keep going downhill for him. His wife learns she has cancer, and he couldn’t be there for her. He was in jail and only heard of her situation from his lawyer. Damon, who isn’t a believer in God, begins to believe when he realizes that, even though he was in a tough situation, believing in something can save him from self-torment. He gives himself a new name to reflect his new outlook on life. The story stakes a turn when he escapes to Israel to further learn about God.
There was a lot going on in this story. Damon’s story is the main one, but there were other characters who became main characters later in the story. This confused me a bit because it took me out of Damon’s story. What I enjoyed most about the story was the detective work in trying to resolve the murder. There were moments in there where I felt Damon was innocent, but I concluded that, because of his medications and sleepwalking, he could have been the murderer. I would have wanted more details into this storyline because that’s what kept me intrigued.
Overall, this was a good read. I believe the multiple characters kept the story moving along. It did feel disjointed at times, and there were some grammatical errors, but otherwise, it does have the mystery and suspense. The religious part leaned toward fantasy and not so much religion as we know it. There were quotes and verses from the bible, but it was done well and fit the story.
I was interested to see how a mystery-thriller plot would work with faith in the forefront. But needless to say I was impressed. I like religious based stories and mystery-thriller is my favourite genre so that was like a cherry on top.
The plot, in the beginning was kinda lackey because there were certain decisions our MC made that I just found utterly nonsensical. But I guess it was meant to be done so we could proceed with the whole redemption arc.
The characters weren’t likeable. The detectives especially 😂 I hated Detective Wise with all my guts. But things get somewhat better later on in the story. I liked the political undertones the author used.
As a Muslim, I think the whole faith based plot. How one sins and then finds religion again has been done before. But there are a very few stories written on how prisoners cope with their trauma using religion.
Overall a good read. 👍🏼
