3 books3 followersPyotr Alexandrovich Manteifel (Russian: Пётр Александрович Манте́йфель) was a Soviet zoologist and naturalist. He was a scion of the famous Zoege von Manteuffel family of Baltic Germans. He was born in Moscow, the son of the writer, musician and civil servant Alexander Petrovich Zoege von Manteuffel. Pyotr spent his childhood in the Vikhrovo estate in Serpukhov district. In 1902, he graduated from the Voskresensky school and entered the Petrovsk Agricultural Academy for higher studies. In 1905, he got married to the daughter of a court official; two years later, this marriage produced a son, Boris Manteifel, who grew up to be a prominent Soviet biologist.
In addition to classes at the academy, Manteuffel attended lectures at Moscow University, and went on nature expeditions to Central Asia and Central Russia. After graduating with honors in 1910, he became an agronomist and soil scientist. Soon he was called up for military service, and in 1914 he was mobilized to the war front; the First World War and the Russian Civil War forced him to interrupt his scientific activities for many years.
In 1924, the director of the Moscow Zoo, MM Zavadovsky, invited Manteuffel to head the ornithological section. He was later appointed deputy director for scientific affairs. Manteuffel was a crucial figure behind the formation of the famous KYBZ, or the Circle of Young Biologists of the Zoo, proving himself to be a popular and talented teacher. The pupils called him Uncle; many future scientists, zoologists and naturalists came out of this youth program, among them Nikolai Kalabukhov, Elena Ilyina, Alexander Kuzyakin, Vera Chaplina, Boris Manteifel, Lev Kaplanov, Sergey Folitarek, the brothers Vladimir Grinberg and Yuri Grinberg, Gordey Bromley, Yuri Isakov, Andrey Bannikov, Valent Kucheruk, Sergey Korytin and others.
In addition to classes at the academy, Manteuffel attended lectures at Moscow University, and went on nature expeditions to Central Asia and Central Russia. প্রফেসর পিওতর মান্তেইফেল ছিলেন প্রখ্যাত রুশ প্রকৃতিবিজ্ঞানী ও জীবপ্রেমিক। ননী ভৌমিকের অনুবাদে তাঁর লেখা 'প্রকৃতিবিদের কাহিনী' তে ফুটে উঠেছে তাঁর প্রকৃতি ও জীবজগত হতে প্রাপ্ত নানা তথ্য। অধিকাংশই আমার জানা ছিলোনা, এতবছরের পড়াশোনা সত্ত্বেও। নতুন নতুন অজস্র ফ্যাক্ট। দৃশ্যপট মস্কো চিড়িয়াখানা কিংবা সাইবেরিয়ার তৈগা বনাঞ্চল, কাজাখ মরুভূমি থেকে ইউক্রেনীয় আস্কানিয়া নোভার স্তেপ। নানা জাতি প্রজাতির প্রাণীতে ভরপুর একটি বই। পৃষ্ঠার কোয়ালিটিও বেশ ভালো।
১৪০ পৃষ্ঠার বইটিতে আছে টুকরো টুকরো অনেকগুলো অভিজ্ঞতা ও পর্যবেক্ষণ। প্রধানত তিনটি প্রকারে এদের ভাগ করা যায়।
১) প্রকৃতির রহস্য উন্মোচন -
যেমন - সদ্য জন্মানো খরগোশকে খুঁজে পায়না কেনো শিকারী প্রাণীরা? কেনো হাঁসের বাচ্চা পানিতে ডুবেনা? কেনো কিছু পরিযায়ী পাখি পরিযানে অংশ নেয়না? সীল কিভাবে জমাট বাঁধা বরফের স্তর ভেদ করে শ্বাস নেয়? সি লায়ন কেনো হজম করতে পারে না নাভাগা মাছের কাঁটা? অথচ গ্রীনল্যান্ডীয় সীলমাছ (হার্প সীল) কিভাবে দিব্যি হজম করছে তা? কেনো কানা পাইক মাছের গায়ের রঙও কালো? কেনো নিরীহ কাসপিয়ান সীল কামড়াচ্ছে লোককে?
এসকল প্রশ্নেরই উত্তর খুঁজেছেন ও দিয়েছেন মান্তেইফেল।
এছাড়াও রয়েছে বুনো হাঁসের আগে থেকে ঠিক করা কিছু নির্দিষ্ট পানাপুকুরে নামার কারণ, বদ্ধস্থান থেকে হঠাৎ খোলা জায়গায় ছাড়া পেয়ে প্রাণীদের আকস্মিক মৃত্যুর কারণ, কিভাবে জন্ম জন্মান্তরের প্রতিবর্তী ক্রিয়ার ফলে ডিমে থাকা অবস্থাতেই পাখির ছানারা সতর্ক হয়ে উঠছে, মা বন্যশূকর কিভাবে জন্মের পর থেকেই শক্তপোক্ত ছানা বেছে নেয়া শুরু করেছে, কেনো ভাল্লুকের বাচ্চা জন্মের পর এত কম ওজনের থাকে, পতঙ্গেদর ঘ্রাণশক্তি এত প্রখর হওয়ার কারণ- ইত্যাদি নিয়ে নানা ব্যাখা ও তথ্য সন্নিবেশিত হয়েছে বইয়ের পাতায় পাতায়।
২) ভুল ধারণার অবসান-
স্বীকার করতে লজ্জা নেই আমার নিজেরও কিছু ভুল ধারণা ছিলো যা ভেঙে গিয়েছে বইটি পড়ে।
যেমন হাতি কি আসলেই একশো দেড়শো বছর বাঁচে? তাহলে বন্দী অবস্থায় সর্বোচ্চ ৫০-৬০ বছরেই কেনো দেহত্যাগ করছে তারা? নাকি পুরোটাই একটা মিথ?
একইভাবে খরগোশকে ভীতু বলা হলেও তার সাহসের দৃষ্টান্ত কম নেই (এমনকি পা ছুঁড়ে ঈগলের পেট ফাঁসানোর বিবরণও আছে)। গাধাকে বোকা বলা হলেও তারও কাণ্ডজ্ঞান আছে। শূকর মোটেই অতটা নোংরা নয় যা তাকে বলা হয়।
উটের পেটে তিন স্তরের পাকস্থলীতে জল জমা থাকে - এরকম ধারণা থাকলেও তা আসলে ভুল। উটের দুশো কেজির কুঁজের চর্বিই হল জলের আসল যোগানদাতা।
বুনো হাঁস কেবল লতাপাতা আর বীজ খায় - সম্পূর্ণ ভুল। বরং তারা বেশি খায় ছোট মাছ, কেঁচো, শামুক। একইভাবে কাদাখোঁচা রা খায় সমুদ্রের কৃমি। কিন্তু শক্তিশালী পাচকরসের কারণে এসব খাদ্যের অবশিষ্ট পাওয়া যায়না।
৩) কিছু ইন্টারেস্টিং ফ্যাক্টস -
যেমন ভাল্লুক দম্পতি বরিৎস ও প্লেক্সার সংসার, মরুভূমিতে বিভিন্ন প্রাণীর বসবাস- বিশেষ করে এঁটুলিদের অনুসরণ ক্ষমতা, রক্তচোষা ডাঁশ ও মশা থেকে রেহাই পেতে গবাদিপশু ও পাখিদের সহাবস্থান, ঈগলের নেকড়ে শিকার (আগে কখনো শুনিনি), গ্লাটন (ওলভেরিন) এর শিয়াল শিকার, সুসলিক রোডেন্ট আর কামেনকা পাখির লড়াই, পোষা মা বিড়াল কিভাবে মেঠো বিড়াল, মুরগি এমনকি ইঁদুরের বাচ্চাদেরও আদর দিয়ে লালনপালন করছে তার বিবরণ, সাপ দেখে শিম্পাঞ্জির পলায়ন, খরগোশের ছদ্ম চামড়া, শিয়ালের লোমওয়ালা পা, কাকের বুদ্ধি, ইঁদুরের বিরুদ্ধে মস্কোবাসীর লড়াই - ইত্যাদি অজস্র মজাদার তথ্য। প্রাণীজগত সম্পর্কে বেশ ভালো ইনসাইট দিবে এই ঘটনাগুলো।
বইটি যেহেতু সোভিয়েত বায়োমকে বেস করে লেখা তাই এমন কিছু প্রাণীর কথা এসেছে যাদের আমাদের বনাঞ্চলে পাওয়া যাবেনা। যেমন পিকা, সাসলিক (মাটির কাঠবিড়ালি), বুরুন্দুক (সাইবেরীয় কাঠবিড়ালি), মারমট ইত্যাদি রোডেন্ট, আরমিন/স্টোট, সেবল (একজাতের মার্টিন), কলিনস্কি (সাইবেরীয় উইসেল), গ্লাটন, ব্যাজার ইউরোপীয় মিনক - ইত্যাদি বিভিন্ন নেউল জাতীয় প্রাণী (মাস্টালয়েড), মরু খরগোশ তোলাই, কোপেত দাগ বুনো ভেড়া, এলক, রো ডিয়ার, মারাল হরিণ বা কাসপিয়ান রেড ডিয়ার, আরখার ভেড়া (উরিয়াল), জাইরান হরিণ পাইক মাছ, উসুরী রেকুন, কাসপিয়ান সীল, সী লায়ন, হার্প সীল ইত্যাদি।
পাখিদের মাঝে টমটিট পাখি, থ্রাশ, বেরকুট ঈগল (সোনালী ঈগল), পরিযায়ী বুনো হাঁস, বুল ফিঞ্চ, ভরত পাখি (ইউরেশীয় স্কাইলার্ক), স্নাইপ, ফিজেন্ট, তিতির, উড গ্রাউজ, স্টার্লিং, কিংলেট, সিসকিন এবং অবশ্যই চলন্ত জাহাজে বাসা বাঁধা সেই বেচারা চিফচ্যাফ এর নাম উল্লেখ্য।
সবমিলিয়ে চমৎকার একটি বই। যাদের প্রাণীজগতের প্রতি, প্রকৃতির সন্তানদের প্রতি আগ্রহ আছে, ভালোবাসা আছে তাদের জন্য সুখপাঠ্য হবে বলে আমার বিশ্বাস। যদিও বইটি বর্তমানে রেয়ার, তবে নিয়মিত পুরনো বইয়ের দোকানে যোগাযোগ রাখলে কপি পাওয়া সম্ভব।

সবমিলিয়ে চমৎকার একটি বই। যাদের প্রাণীজগতের প্রতি, প্রকৃতির সন্তানদের প্রতি আগ্রহ আছে, ভালোবাসা আছে তাদের জন্য সুখপাঠ্য হবে বলে আমার বিশ্বাস। যদিও বইটি বর্তমানে রেয়ার, তবে নিয়মিত পুরনো বইয়ের দোকানে যোগাযোগ রাখলে কপি পাওয়া সম্ভব।

In that clean and crisp style of writing , I have come to associate with many Russian writers, especially in non-fiction, Tales of Naturalist is a quite essential reading for anybody interested in foraying into the branch of animal behaviour. 42 stories, each a page or two explains a fascinating detail of an animal. The topics range from hibernation tactics, reasoning capacities, innovative diets to animal friendships. A fascinating book for children and adults alike.

This is a book of collected essays on animal behaviour, drawn from the author's extensive study of animals both in the wild and in captivity. The essays are short, interesting, and each one describes a particular behaviour and one or more associated stories. The stories are easy and quick to read. They are filled with clear insights and contain liberal doses of humour. I thoroughly enjoyed reading the book. For the lucidity, engaging manner of writing, and my positive reading experience, I give 4 stars.

This is my All-time, no.1 favourite book.
Quite simply, I love the stories. Some have unexpected twists.
Some has nature playing cruel tricks on her own children.
In some,animals are caught between centuries-old reflexes & newly-conditioned activities.
Every story is unputdownable, at least to me when I was 10 years old, but perhaps I'm a "wildlife-geek"!
This book instilled in me a fascination for the Russian Taiga, 7 a longing to go on similar expeditions in my own country ... which has not yet materialized.

বইটি অসম্ভব সুন্দর। বড় ও ছোট সব বয়সের পাঠকদের ই ভাল লাগবে।
