Balloon Boy and the Porcupine Pals #1

Balloon Boy and the Porcupine Pals: Antihooliganism

Rate this book
Balloon has always been a morbidly obese moron. But recently, something about his feeble brain has changed. Every time he guesses, he’s right. Victory, the girl he’s been crushing on for over ten years, needs his abilities to save her dying father. Desperate for her affection, Balloon agrees to help. There’s only one catch: the cure is over 29 million light years away, perched on a pedestal at the center of the Sombrero Galaxy.

Transforming his single-wide trailer into a white trash spaceship, Balloon races to save Victory’s father. Along the way, he encounters an alien regime bent on his annihilation, and a few new friends who feed him tacos.

Balloon is one crazy Texan. The story has our hero as a morbidly obese intellectually challenged man who's brain is suddenly amazingly able to answer all questions in life. Balloon and his "friends" go on a crazy sci-fi space adventure in a single wide trailer. It amazed me how much I came to like and root for Balloon and his pals even though I could not relate to them. It was well done but left you hanging in the end! What happens next Mort?

I struggled with the first quarter of this book, and really had a hard time getting through it. None of the characters introduced were very likeable or at all relateable. Once the story got going though those characters really start to develop and I actually started to like most of them and become interested in their journey. Unfortunately now I have to wait for the sequel to see where that journey is taking them.

Balloon's adventure through space is exciting and entertaining. I enjoyed the lightheartedness and satirical elements of the book.
