Own It: Discover Your Faith in God

Rate this book
It's time to stop borrowing or faking your faith . . . own it!

The feature film Grace Unplugged tells the story of Grace Trey, an eighteen year-old small town pastor's daughter who is also a phenomenal singer. But when she abruptly leaves home and finds instant Hollywood fame, the faith and relationships she grew up with are put to the test.

As seen in the movie, Own It challenges readers by asking what it means to really "own" your faith rather than just automatically or blindly following in the footsteps of friends or parents. Bestselling authors Michael and Hayley DiMarco will help you navigate what to do when faith meets real world challenges.

Renting, borrowing, or faking your faith is a waste of time. Own It is all about the supernatural reality that when you take hold of your faith, it's really God's love that takes hold of you.

I really enjoyed this book and the breakdown of what owning it really is. It really brings real life situations to light and tells you that you can’t live on borrowed faith and that you must own your faith and except God into your life. This was definitely a good read and recommended for a struggling or unsure Christian who needs a little understanding and push in the right direction

FAVORITE QUOTES

-A life lived in the light is a life that is truly owned by its occupant.

-When something is yours, it becomes immediately more important to you than something that is not yours.

-Ownership can also apply to a state of heart a way of living, whereby you may what you say and what you do agree.

-When you own something truly own it, it owns you you.

-The faith that saves is a faith that costs you something. That will change your life, and that will complete you.

"Faith isn't just the act of believing in God, calling Jesus Savior, or even saying the sinner's prayer. These words in James (2:19) make the idea of faith something more than simply belief in God. Saving faith goes beyond simple belief to action - action that trusts God to be sufficient in life. In other words, the "it" that you must own in order to be a child of God is this: Faith in Jesus Christ and His death, burial, and resurrection - believing they are sufficient to reconcile your life to God."

Everyone has faith in something or someone - what we place our faith in so important because that is the difference between heaven and hell, life and death. An equal question is why do you believe in what you do?! We live in a generation where people especially young people adopt the faith of their parents or friends. Michael and Hayley DiMarco set out to show through God's Word why we all must have a faith of our own and what true faith is. The DiMarco's do a great job of outlining what they wish to cover, pour so much of God's Word in this book, as well as, give many personal experiences all for the sake of reaching people about the need to make their faith in Christ Jesus their own.

Great read, especially for young people. Our faith will save us, it will cost us, it will change us, it will complete us, it will free us....who wouldn't want that.

Own It is the second book by the DiMarco's I've read. While I didn't enjoy it as much as the first one (True Purity - which I loved), I did like it.

I liked how the chapters were set up and the style of the book. I also liked how Hayley and Michael shared some of their own stories/struggles - that made the book more personal/real.

I thought the beginning of Own It was really good, but I didn't care for much of the second half. I don't know why exactly, it just felt like there wasn't that much to it and some things were repeated a little much for me (like the word "own/owning").

So, there were things I liked and things I didn't. Here are a couple memorable quotes:

God is like food; you need Him every day. You can't get Him all on Sunday and be filled up for the next six days. - Page 60

What we all fail to recognize when we demand punishment for the sins of others is that God hasn't punished us for all of our sins. Surely we can count many of our own sins, failures, and lacking. And surely we deserve far greater punishment than we have been given. - Page 72

About Own It:

The movie Grace Unplugged tells the story of Grace Trey, an ideal Christian teenager who is also a phenomenal singer. But when she is pushed into the “real world” at the tender age of eighteen after getting the music break of a lifetime, her faith is put to the test.

Own It! mirrors the film by asking what it means to really “own” your personal faith rather than just automatically following in the footsteps of parents, friends, or other influencers. Best-selling authors Hayley and Michael DiMarco help readers understand what to do when faith meets real world challenges.

Without solid beliefs, poor choices are likely to follow. You must take the time to really know who you are, who you are becoming, and who God made you to be. It's your personal faith . . . own it!

My Thoughts:

This book is a brilliant concept. It raises the question, your faith, where did it come from? Did it come from your parents? Are you borrowing it? Are you faking it? This book forces you to make a choice. A choice that can change your life forever. Do you get up on Sunday mornings just going through the motions? Are you one of those Sunday Christians? Or are you only a Christian when it suits you?

This book forces you to reflect on just what you are doing to own it? To own your faith. To figure out what God is all about and to create or recreate that hunger to know Him more intimately.

**Disclosure** These books were sent to me free of charge for my honest review from Flyby Promotions.

The book begins with telling of the Prodigal Son. After briefly summarizing the tale while providing a bit of “backstory” to the culture, the authors use this parable to show the love of G-d as the father in the tale originally told by Y’shua. The authors use this to show how the book is not about accusing, but rather about benefitting. It is designed to help readers, or listeners, determine their own faith in G-d, from a biblically-based perspective.

From an audiobook point of view, the narration is pretty well made. Read with inflective pauses and changes in intonation to reflect the grammatical structure of the book, the only challenge is the rate of pace – not giving enough pause between points to reflect on. Nevertheless, the DiMarco team does a fair job with the narration. It is obvious, however, that it is an audiobook narration. There is a certain flatness to the reader, as if based in an academic setting, that causes the listener to potentially lose attention because the material no longer feels personalized, but mass produced.

I liked this book a lot. I'm someone that feels pretty solid in my faith - in an understanding of the Atonement of Jesus Christ and how his grace saves us - and this book made me think about these things in some powerful ways. Much of the writing is geared to adolescents, and I actually appreciate the simplicity because I have a sneaking suspicion that's how God probably views all of us, no matter our earth age. These Christian authors really get it - they get that faith is more than saying "I believe". I like how they fearlessly take every excuse and expose what those excuses for holding back a full-fledged faith say about us. I love the whole freedom and bondage section. I like the analogies and efforts to make abstract principles real. And the best thing is that I feel I have a better understanding and hope for what is being taught in traditional Christian congregations (if these ministerial authors are good representatives). I close the book with a higher than before feeling of kinship!

I HATE books like this. There is so much wrong with this book I don't even know where to begin. I should have taken notes on all the contradictory crap that made no sense whatsoever. From the very beginning the authors were misinterpreting stories from the Bible and giving scriptures a different meaning to support their illogical reasoning. Pretty much if you want a book that will guilt you into giving up your happiness to become obsessed with God but not with religion then buy this book. This book was not about owning your own faith at all. It was about telling you why you should let God own you but not giving any real world examples of how to survive the actual everyday Christian walk using the "logic" given in the book. I want my money back. Grace Unplugged was an awesome movie but this book will make anyone with common sense run as far away from christianity as they can.

Good reads win:

So I got this book in the mail today. It was one of those books that just sucked me in (let me just say house is a mess and husband is so not going to be happy). I usually don't read books dealing with religion or god. but since I won it in goodreads I definitely gave it a try. I fell in love with this book. This book is about a girl who gets a break in the music industry. It makes you ask many questions. For me the one that stuck how was where does your faith come from? That question just really got me thinking as to my own faith and where it comes from. This is one of those books I think most teens should read so they too can ask questions about there faith.

I received a free copy of Own It through a Goodreads First Reads giveaway.

Don't let the thinness of this book fool you. It is a heavy read. In Own It, Michael and Hayley DiMarco write with unyielding frankness about the factors involved in truly owning your faith...what you must give up, what you will gain as a result, and how it will fundamentally change you. Own It is a revelation for a believer of any age.

This is a christian book, explaining how a person should not follow others faith. Find and live by their own beliefs. Faith changes you. Completes, frees and saves you. When your faith meets challenges don't make poor choices. Own it. Believe and act upon it. An excellent book for all to read, christian and non christian. This is a teaching book. Well written.

Own it
By: Michael & Hayley DiMarco

Do we own our own personal faith or are we letting the world direct us? Are we just following the world , parents or friends. This book will help us to know what to do when our faith meets the challenges of everyday life. Looking forward to putting this into practice in my own life.

I really enjoyed this book. It made me delve deeper into my own relationship with Jesus. It showed me how, when change occurs in my relationship with Christ, it's a good thing. Staying stagnant is not beneficial.
