Among this country's many treasures is the city of Chicago, an area filled with creativity and culture. Haunted Chicago, a collection of stories of ghosts, mysteries, and paranormal happenings in Chi-Town, will leave readers delightfully frightened.
This is another of Tom Ogden's books of "true" ghost stories. My rating would have been higher if he hadn't gone with his usual style and written the stories using a fictional storyteller. I'm pretty sure there are multiple people out there who would be willing to tell their stories about haunted places. Especially since ghost and ghost hunting shows are still very popular. I was thrilled that there were stories in here that I hadn't read before since I've read so many of this type of book. If you're a fan of shows like "Ghost Hunters" and "Ghost Adventures" this book is highly recommended.
This book was okay. The style didn’t work for me; each chapter begins with a story about a fictional person encountering the supposedly real ghosts at haunted sites in Chicago and the suburbs. In my opinion, using fictional characters makes it harder to suspend disbelief and takes some of the fun out of reading ghost stories. Also, some of the details used to describe the city made me wonder if the author had ever been to Chicago. With that said, there were some good stories, and I liked reading about some of the history I hadn’t known about. I probably would have enjoyed it more if the descriptions of the ghosts and haunted sites were more detailed, as some of those details were mentioned in generic terms or as an afterthought. There is a detailed list of books and other media at the end, and this book has inspired me to put ‘Devil in the White City’ on my reading list.
Great book has a lot of well told and well researched ghost stories that take place all over the Windy City. Lot more information based then other host story books I’ve read so it took me a bit longer but overall it was an enjoyable read with quite a few stories that gave me chills especially the one about the hotel owner who ended being a murderer who buried the bodies in his basement.
Having read numerous books of ghost stories from Chicago, it was enjoyable to run across some stories I haven't read. Mr. Ogden's style of telling the story first and then delving into the background of the story is an enjoyable way of being acquainted with these stories.
