In the aftermath of an assassination attempt, Sylvan Mir, wolf Were Alpha, and her mate Drake McKennan turn their backs on the government that has threatened their survival, vowing to protect their own with primal force, regardless the cost in blood.
After escaping the Vampire dungeons beneath the blood club Nocturne, Fae royal Torren de Brinna petitions Sylvan for sanctuary, setting Sylvan and her allies on a collision course with Francesca, Viceregal of the Eastern Vampire seethe. In the midst of war, Torren finds her heart at risk from a young dominant Were, while Francesca's Vampire enforcer Michel draws one of Sylvan's trusted guards into a web of seduction and danger.
Hunted by human extremists, targeted by the Shadow Lords who fear her growing power, and beset by enemies masquerading as friends, Sylvan leads the Timberwolf Pack to war on two fronts as alliances shift and long-held beliefs are challenged.
This is the 5th book in the Midnight Hunters series. Be sure to read Books 1-4 first!
Book 5 begins differently. Several days have passed since the latest assassination attempt, and Sylvan is depicted as uncharacteristically insecure, withdrawn and sullen because of the death of Andrew and the betrayal by blood-addicted were Ennock, Andrew’s would-be mate. What happened to the hyper-aggressive battle at anytime, be prepared to kill or be killed cartoony character of Sylvan? It just really struck me as out-of-character for the Alpha to mope so much after the loss of a rather minor character in the series.
Still, she does recover, returning quickly to her aggressive fight-everyone nature, and action picks up quickly on multiple fronts. Not only is Sylvan now suspicious of the humans, but she suspects treachery by Francesca, as well as a growing threat from another were-clan, led by Bernardo. Raina the cat-were has small parts in the book, but the mercenary cat-were Dru is introduced as an interesting character. Dru reminds us that the cat-were are much more independent than are the wolf-weres. The politicking and empire building/protecting by vampire Francesca continues. Oddly, we don’t hear any further of the “good” humans, Martin and his sister.
The love-interest of Michelle and Katya has matured to a believable level, and “The Magic Hunt” does a great job portraying the risk their affections bring to both of them. Two other new pairings develop too: Misha and a Fae (Torren), and Grey finally is attracted to something/someone other than anger in a Blackpaw were prisoner, Tamera.
The human scientist Veronica Standish thinks she’s on top of the world with her new lab, subjects and her relationship with Luce….but perhaps she’s mistaken!
Oh yes…the “tangling” and vampire orgies continue. Male bodyparts are mentioned and used more frequently than I’d prefer, but everyone is kept quite busy. With some books, I bookmark the steamy scenes so I can revisit them, but with this book I’d have fewer bookmarks if I bookmarked the non-sex scenes!
The ending is quite dramatic, and sets things up very nicely for what will be an interesting finale to the series in the next book!
I liked this book, and the new characters are interesting….but I think the series is ready to come to an end. There’s only one more book to go, so the author agrees with me! 4.5* rounded up to 5* because it’s worth rereading (relistening….Maxine Mitchell continues to do a fantastic job with the narration of this audiobook!).
She's done it again. Another fast paced exciting instalment to the Midnight Hunters series. It just keeps getting better and better. If you allow your imagination to flow freely, with the authors help, a whole new world opens with it's own rules and regulations. The book is captivating. I guess it could be read on its own but I wouldn't advise it. The series grows from book to book. It would make more sense and be more pleasurable if you read the others first. Enjoy! I'm off to read number six.
I still love these books and the couples they follow. The author reveals more details of this fantasy world with each new book, and again I am in awe of Radclyffe's imagination. Add in the loving (albeit unusual) couples and some steamy sex scenes and you've got a winner. I am actually kind of depressed that there's only one book left for me to read. Hopefully, the author is working on another but still the wait will be excruciating.
4.5 star rating The suspense keeps me glued to seek the next in series but the eroticism, action and unusual sweet romance has me spellbound. Asides this, this 5th book in series touches on many more social concerns that is very relatable. I love all the books but right at this moment of just finish reading this particular one,I feel this dug deeper and should have anyone ruminate on norms, culture and beliefs especially concerning inter_relationships.
Book 5 for the Midnight Hunters series. Overall, it felt more like a setup book, making sure pieces and alliances were in place for the next one. The end was a bit more satisfying than the others, so that was nice.
Sylvan is much less of a mess than the previous books. I appreciated that we finally got to see her leading her pack. The story was fine, but I felt like there were not enough cameos from my favorites (Laura, Jodi, Raina, Becca).
Loving the series still despite at times I feel there's too much characters going on in the book. It's good though now we see the fae in the picture. Torren's completely a different breed and I do want to see where that leads with Mischa.
Absolutely loving the book also because I finally get to see Michel's story with Katya. Michel is one of my most favorite character in the series, she's mysterious, dark, but you can sense that underneath she's loyal and passionate. I'm happy she find Katya in the end and I'd certainly like to see more of her still in future books. Hopefully we'll also get to see more of her past.
My only complain is I'll probably have to wait another year to get the next installment!!
I love this series. I look forward to each book. The chemistry between the couples is amazing. The Midnight Hunter series is a must if you love fantasy and shifters.
"The Magic Hunt," by L.L. Raand is the 5th installment of the Midnight Hunters series. I’ve been a huge fan of this series and have looked forward to each installment.
After an assassination attempt, Sylvan Mir, wolf Were Alpha of the Timberwolf Pack, and her mate Drake McKennan vow to protect their own, no matter what the cost, from the government and all others who threaten their survival.
In this story, we are introduced to a new person, Fae royal Torren de Brinna. Torren escapes from the vampire dungeon and tries to get back to her people, but finds the doorway closed and is left with only one alternative… request that Sylvan give her sanctuary. However, she didn’t expect to fall in love with one of Sylvan’s young dominate weres, Misha.
Let me first reiterate that I love this series. With that said, I struggled, a bit, with the fact that Jody did not have a bigger part in this story. Since this is, most definitely, a war with the Viceregal of the vampires, I felt that Jody should have been a key figure, a liaison between wolves and vampires. However, she was not. In fact, I think she was in all of 5-pages in the whole book. I would have thought there would have been some kind of collaboration between Sylvan, Jody, and Michel. However, there was not.
The love story between Katya and Michel continues to grow, which I’m glad to see. They make a good match and I would like to see where this story goes. I also like Misha a lot and think that Torren will be a good mate for her. I hope to see more of these two couples in future installments.
I suppose I felt this story was not as complete as the others were. Sometimes, this is acceptable because the next book ties it all together and keeps the edge-of-your-seat entertainment. I’m hopeful for the next book!
L.L.Raand is an amazing author and this world she has created has been one of the most interesting supernatural worlds I've read about with the vampires, werewolves and now finally the fae have shown up and added a new depth to the story.
I'm having some issues with the series however, it seems that she's trying to pair every single character we've been introduced to with someone else and it's starting to become too much, the characters are starting to blend together for me, I remember loving Sylvan and Drake, the romance was so incredible and sexy, a book I couldn't put down, and then book two with Becca and Jody, the cool and mysterious vampire world, so very different than the werewolves, and my beloved villaness Francesca and her second in command Michel, Nikki and the omega Sophia.
But now there are even more characters that weren't that significant in the beginning trying to get pair off and it becomes very by-the-numbers and repetitive. Yes the love is forbidden but honestly not for long and hurrah they end up together by the end of the book and I find myself impatiently skimming the pages hoping for more of the story and less of just the character romance which is just blah now.
This book was absolutely amazing and I couldn't put it down. It took me three hours to read I was so absorbed. The relationship between Sylvan and Drake is absolutely inspiring. I love the way they not only protect the pack with everything they have but watch out for their pups who are absolutely adorable. There were a lot of battles that they had to deal with and new alliances that were made. New species like the fae were introduced and found out. You also had warriors in Sylvans pack who suffered from humans and vampires alike and had to deal with experimentation, some are full of rage and want revenge while others are learning to deal with life and except that miracles do happen.
Bernardo is a pain in the ass and will have a little surprise for him. Michel and Jody are awesome and I'm glad that Sylvan has them around. Slowly but surely Sylvans pack members are being mated and it only brings Sylvans pack more numbers and makes them stronger. This book was a page turner,I highly recommend it and can't wait for the next one to come out.
➬➱➫➩➪【5 Stars】 This is the fifth book in the Midnight Hunters series. I was impressed that two relationships are explored in this book. Some previous side characters are now with their true mate so that was heartwarming. I liked that we were finally able to explore another species that isn’t a Were or Vampire.
As stated in my previous review: Radclyffe does not disappoint on the erotica tag at all. I was a bit concerned with the insta-love vibe, but it definitely coincides with the fact that the Weres are able to sense their true mate. I am such a sucker for books where there are possessive and jealous love interests. This hits that right on the dot.
TW: There are explicit M/F scenes (hardly any but still). There is also abuse to some characters. It is mild. It’s not g!p necessarily… but please read other reviews for a more in depth explanation.
I reread this series every Halloween and cannot recommend it enough. H to the o to the t. ➢Happy reading!
Loved it that she's brought the Fae into this one is great, but not seeing much of Jody and Becca was disappointing. Now we have to wait at least another year for the next one ! :-(
This is the fifth installment of Radclyffe’s Midnight Hunter Series. ‘The Magic Hunt’ picks up after another attack on the Were Alpha by a group of humans who do not want to allow the Praetern species to get equal rights under the law. The Alpha must continue her quest to protect her mate and now born pups, as well as her pack by trying to find out who is behind the attacks. Now the Timberwolf Pack finds itself fighting another pack and its ambitious leader, as well as offering sanctuary to the Viceregal’s escaped prisoner Torren de Brinna. Can this prisoner help the Alpha save one of her own and shift the balance of power within the vampire ranks? I recommend the books be read in order so one can follow and enjoy the story better. Radclyffe always gives a bit of a summary but I can not imagine the story being as enjoyable if one can’t understand the circumstances. As it is, there are some things that have not been explained completely and this is book number five in the series. As the story continues, there is more of the same. I have to say the beginning of the book was slow and predictable. The vampires and werewolves were represented by the familiar characters and made the story almost stagnant as even the sex was repetitive. Yes, so much of it around every corner one becomes immune to the lines. Then of course, Radclyffe managed to throw a curve ball and introduce a new Praetern species, the Fae. This character, Torren, was frustrating until it revealed itself and then it was simply magical, hence the title of this installment. Her powers and background managed to inject the series with, in my opinion, much needed fresh air. Now there is another ally and another world to pique our interest. The story continues to be about the struggle of the Praetern species after the humans realize these non human creatures have been in existence for millennia. This series mirrors our real world with how love transcends species and gender. Something to ponder and simply enjoy. There is also a special treat in the downfall of a vampire (finally!), although I’m sure she will be back in the next book. The Michel and Katya story line marches forward as well. The book ends on a small cliffhanger and no doubt I will be reading the next installment soon. Overall another solid installment of the series that brings the old set of rules and characters with a new Praetern species. 3.5 stars
It was also a prime example of forgotten backstory.
Reading this series is starting to become a chore. From interchangeable characters to the author seemingly forgetting backstory they themselves created, the only real hold the series has is that it has a slightly unique take on supernatural creatures and is halfway decently written. Instead of developing characters already in the story, more and more characters keep coming into play as the author tries to pair everybody off. I keep reading in the hope something develops deeper than sex at first sight. It has potential to be better, and this one did at least have some action fights.
Gah! I have a love-hate relationship with this series, so take my review with a grain of salt… this series has/had so much potential. Unfortunately, I think Radclyff ruined it from the get-go with the weird sexual undercurrent that pulses through every page and interaction - often times way too literally. I’m just so annoyed at Radclyff for both thinking up what could have been the quintessential lesbian paranormal series of our generation but also having the resources to put it out there, AS THE LITERAL PRESIDENT of Bold Stroked Books Publishing, but instead decided to pad an otherwise intricate story with excessive and ridiculous smut. But about this book: It was very good for what it was. At this point, I either skip or ignore the weird sex stuff, so my review is based on the plot (and my annoyance at Radclyff AKA THE LITERAL PRESIDENT of THE LESBIAN book publisher). Only 3 stars because I think at some point, a vampire bit Radclyffe and fogged up her mind and she forgot some of the details in previous books, so there were a lot of contradictions. Radclyff definitely has had this issue in previous books, but there were too many in this one. This wasn’t the most exciting book in the series, but it is what seems the penultimate one. A lot is set up for future battles and alliances in this one, so definitely don’t skip it! Now, back to me being annoyed at stuff: And am I the only one who does not like Drake? Like… she was literally a human a few months ago, and is now basically co-alpha of a pack that is, by all accounts, very militant. Yet she has had zero training on being a tactician, or war or fighting or using weapons or anything particularly physical, yet she’s somehow going into battle and getting upset when Sylvan suggests she stay home? Why has no one trained this woman in any sort of combat and why are we all acting like she’s been a trained wolf this whole time? Which leads me to the most unforgivable plot hole: Everyone ignores the fact that Drake wasn’t born a were. Clearly, she had to have been changed by the were virus manufactured in the lab after she was bitten… yet the scientific minds of enemies who have been researching this for decades have not made the connection that Drake could be the key to whole thing? Maybe this is a conflict the author will introduce in a later entry. Anyway, that’s my rant. To summarize: definitely read this one.
These beings keep turning up and being escorted to the compound of the Timberwolves. Alpha Sylvan Mir continues to have run-ins with other preternatural beings. Alliances and allegiances, as well as love in varying combinations is changing the old world order. It reminds me of what is happening with humans from different cultures falling in love with one another, creating such diversity. I like how Sylvan takes it all in stride, after all they are her wolves that are anything other than ordinary.
There was a lot of adventure in this book like the others. I am happy that Francesca is on the run. I hope that is the case. As much as I did not like her in this book like I have in the other installments, she still has me enthralled. She is the type of character that you love to hate, but also hard to shake. I find her charming and irresistible.
I like all the strong characters of Sylvan, Drake, Jody, Becca, Sophia, Raina, Torren, Michel, Katya, Misha, and even Lara (who I didn’t like for a while) but I still cannot for the life of me come to like Niki Kroff. Her arrogance and hotheadedness leaves a lot to be desired.
I don’t know which one is my favorite book of the series thus far. I have said each of them has been and then I read the next one and I relinquish that placement. I like them all. It is a series that I will read over and over again.
I’m five books into this series now and I’m fully ready to admit that I don’t want to leave this world. Every time I finish a book and think I’ll read something else as a palette cleanser before going back to it, the ending sucks me in and I need to get the next book! Bringing far into this book was such a treat! And that ending?!
The best of the series so far! So exciting! A lot happens in this installment and it would be difficult to talk of it without spoiling something. Suffice to say, that it was difficult to put down, especially towards the end. Enjoy this one.
You get a girlfriend! You get a girlfriend! You all get girlfriends!! I love this series. I can’t wait to get to the next book but I hate that it’s coming to an end! 😔
I loved this book more than the last and I did not think that was possible. Raand has involved more species of the paranormal and does an exquisite job writing about them and the relationships that evolve. Now, on to Shadow Hunt.
L.l.raand continues to weave the series keeping a fast pace and the excitement going. As she introduces new characters the dynamic of the story nature only grows.
One of my favorite were series! I love Raands take on the paranormal. I’ve read the series several times and I never want it to end! Raand’s world building is amazing. She has created a believable world full of humans, Were, Vampires, Mages, Fae, and Psi. Each book has a new couple falling in love, while still centering around Drake, Sylvan and the Timberwolf pack, and giving updates on the lives of the previous couples. We finally get some Fae action in book five! Torron de Brianna is the Master of the Hunt. She has escaped Francesca’s imprisonment. The Faerie Gates are locked so she enters Timberwolf pack lands to seek sanctuary. There she finds Misha the young wolf who hears her hawks cry and calls to her hound. We seen Misha throughout the series and finally it’s time for her to find her mate. Misha takes a bullet meant for the hound and in return Torron helps Sylvan save her. I love the magic we get with Torren and am excited for the future possibilities of her and Misha’s relationship. Torren also reveals some key members of the Shadow Lords to Sylvan. Michel and Katya’s relationship also comes to a head in book five. They are becoming blood bonded. Katya found freedom in Michel when she was imprisoned. She loves Michel. Michel calls to her wolf. Katya gives Michel light in her life again. Makes her want and need instead of just existing as she was before. Watching Michel try to hide her love from Francesca is hard. Michel fights for Katya in the end, becoming an friend to the Timberwolf pack, claiming blood rights to Katya, and becoming Katya’s mate. Michel injury’s Francesca and Jody claims the dominion as Clan Chasseur De Nuit territory. Michel becomes liege of Nocturne. Gray is still struggling with her anger and her fear. Being around Katya and Misha helps elevate it some. She is able to get the young Blackpaw wolf Tamara to open up on why they attack the Timberwolfs. I can’t wait for her to have a mate that will help settle her wolf. With the lies the BlackPaw alpha, Bernardo, spreads to his pack, Sylvan and the Pack seeks to challenge. One Shadow Lord defeated. She defeats him, claims the Blackpaw pack as her own, and the land belongs to the Timberwolf Pack. The wolves from the Blackpaw pack and in need of strong leadership and sustenance. Sylvan and Drake are the heart of the pack and alliances. We are still learning of Drakes abilities after her transformation. Drake continues to claim and settle Sylvan’s wolf. Loving her and helping her care for everyone in the pack. Sylvan fights to protect every member of the pack and their ever growing Alliance. She is beautiful and formidable leader. Two pregnant Weres and their pups need saving bring on book six.
