Adriana Sinclair is an evolutionary mystery. Her blood type matches nothing in modern medicine. When a failed blood transfusion kills her twin sister, Adriana discovers she's a throwback to an original human that scientists have coined the “Mitochondrial Eve.”

Still reeling from her sister's death and the subsequent realization of her family’s secret, Adriana struggles to put her life back in order and focus on her college studies. She finds comfort in Kalan, the new guy whose striking albino features and friendly manner keep her distracted from the wreck her life has become. Joanne Brothwell lives in the country on the Canadian prairie where her stories are inspired by the dead things that appear at her doorstep on a daily basis.Of course, her two pets, a retired police dog with titanium fangs and a feral barn cat missing two toes, make the safety of surrounding wildlife, at best, uncertain.

Nicknames are something Joanne has in abundance; most notably “Grumpy Bunny” (her husband), and “Princess with a Sailor’s Mouth” (her friends). She’s known to daydream, and ever since grade school has been accused of having a poor attention span. The truth is, Joanne has an alternate reality inside her head, where characters speak to her, sometimes so loudly (and incessantly) she just can’t hear anything else!

Joanne is thrilled to see her alternate universe finally become real with the publication of her novel, Stealing Breath, and her prequel novella, Vicarious. Now, with the sequel Silencing Breath on the way, you can be rest assured you will see much more of Joanne’s writing in the future, as those characters in her head, having tasted the sweet freedom of release, simply refuse to be silenced!

I got this book for free during a promotional push advertised on Twitter. The premise sounded interesting and, well, free book, right? Why not?

After slogging through several chapters, I realized why not.

The writing style is abysmal, there are grammatical errors sprinkled liberally throughout, and I found the poor writing quality so distracting that whatever story the author meant to tell--interesting or not--simply got lost. (For instance, in the first chapter alone, the words seduce/seduction are so overused as to be cringe-worthy, the prose is fluorescent purple, and some words are so misused that it's clear the author has never bothered to look them up in a dictionary.)

Some examples from the first few chapters (chosen at random from a huge field of possibilities):

There were giant boxy mirrors everywhere, like a giant Rubik's cube. She couldn't think of a single word to use instead of "giant" the second time around? Just off the top of my head, I come up with huge, vast, and enormous. (A thesaurus would give many more options, of varying nuances of meaning--she could have taken her pick.) To me, that smacks of creative laziness. I get the impression the writer simply couldn't be bothered to reread or rewrite her own work to make it publication-ready.

My mother's voice came through the receiver, her voice shrill and digressive. The mother isn't remotely digressive in her succinct statement that the character's sister has been in an accident. So it doesn't even work on that level. Her voice is digressive?? Wha--??

The apples of her cheeks were flushed pink and the bright teal of her eyes smoldered in the surrounding circle of white. Yeah, no. (Purple. Purple and sparkly.)

The years between fourteen and seventeen was a living hell, as I was forced to sleep in my sister's room on 24 hour suicide watch. *headdesk* Years/were.

"The (...) theory could be tested," Dr Bomer added, his words digressive at the end of his statement, as if he realized he'd said something out of turn. What? Please, I beg you, look up the word "digress."

There are many excellent free dictionaries and thesauruses online. LOTS. They are not difficult to find.

Because of the lack of writing savvy, I couldn't finish this book--it wasn't worth my time to constantly be thrown out of a slightly interesting tale by the low quality of the writing. However, the premise was an interesting one, and the writer clearly has a love of science that I appreciate. Given a good editor and several extensive rewrites, this might have been a book worth reading beyond the fifth or sixth chapter. Without editors, my hope is that the writer continues to practice her craft and learns to self-assess in an effective way, an ability that was obviously lacking in this effort.

Not recommended...not even for free, I'm sorry to say.

4.5 out of 5 stars.

I really liked this. It was SUPER cool, interesting, and if you pay attention at all to any of my statuses ignore the Christian thing I jumped the gun there XD.

Song Choice: “Romulus” by Sufjan Stevens, “Satellite Heart” Cover by Christina Perri, “You’re All I Have” by Snow Patrol

First thoughts: So this was an intense scifi thriller, that had my heart pounding, and I totally forgot about trying to out-smart the author like I normally like to do, being all like – I know what is going to happen you can’t fool me, HA, HA HAHHA, yeah I did actually laugh….anyways – so this was super interesting, only there were a few parts that I did find a bit gag worthy, and also some of the scientific terms were um… never quite put into layman terms…. I am an English major goddammit! I don’t know science-y stuff even though I love all things sci-fi XD

Thoughts on Plot: So intense, it started out where I wasn’t expecting it, and okay yeah maybe it shouldn’t have started where it did, I understand WHY it did but at the same time Adriana just lost her twin, and her grieving was a little spontaneous and odd at sometimes but overall it didn’t bother me. It had to happen that way in the way that the plot worked. So it starts off fast, and keeps the pace, I didn’t realize how far I had gotten until I had to come up for air…um…well not air but that is tmi :p haha anyways. So this is going to get your heart racing, your eyes a going, and you might not see the twist that come, yeah there are some things we all find out before both the MCs but I mean the author sets it up that way. I liked that this book wasn’t centered completely on the romance between Kalan and Adriana, I didn’t think it was needed. Overall I thought this was super interesting, and a totally new idea that I – personally – have not come across before. Now I read one review that said this book was littered with grammar problems and blah blah blah now I get that pisses off people and I respect that, but also these are indie authors that have to pay for everything on their own, editors are NOT cheap, and yeah okay there were a few times I was going, oh that is wrong but overall I just enjoyed the book for what it was, an amazing book.

Characters:

Adriana: She was kinda all arounds kickass, she doesn’t let people step in and do things for her, she is a do-er…hahaha, I don’t remember what tv or movie I saw that from but haha funny…anyways …so moving on. Adriana though she thinks she is weak I never really see it, she jumps right into the thick of things, kicking ass, finding answers and not letting anything stop her. I really liked her and while she is hurting she doesn’t let anything bring her to a halting stop. At times I will admit I felt like she was the man in the relationship between her and Kalan but I lets it go. Anyways so moving back to Adriana she isn’t afraid to go after what she wants, and I totally respected her as an MC. And she does have a vulnerable side I think that Joanne, got the twin relationship dead on. For reals – I am allowed to say this as I am a twin myself. The relationship that Adriana and her twin was totally relatable for me as a twin myself and I it really made me feel.
Kalan: He was interesting I really was like; wow we are really in a male’s head right now. Other times he was very sensitive which I get and there was quite a little twist in there that I thought mayhaps could have been expanded on slightly only because I wasn’t sure it actually happened until it was confirmed later. But seriously it didn’t bother me that much once again. Anyways he was a very interesting character with a lot of different layers to him and I loved it. I loved him. So fantastic <3 anyways so Kalan = A+ in my book.

Marcus: Was interesting, he was hard to figure out most of the time, and I think at times he broke the character he was portraying to everyone in the book and we saw the real him which I found incredibly interesting. He had quite a few surprises for us as well.

Villain: holy fudgers there is nothing much scarier than a villain who actually believes in what he/she is doing is right. Anyways that is all on that.

NOW FOR THE BIG TIME SPOILER TIME, this is unfortunately mostly where this book lost points with me – not that it was bad it was more of…ehhhh factor. So PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE DO NOT LOOK if you don’t want certain parts of the book spoiled for you

So the end….good. No real cliffie, I am not sure if this is a series or not, I will admit I did like Joanne’s style so yay. I am totally willing to check out her other reads that is for sure.

Adriana is a happy, typical college student, worried about classes, guys and her future and in the blink of an eye it is all taken away from her. In the midst of tragedy, Adriana discovers that her family carries a secret, a very old secret. Adriana's blood type is unknown to the medical world and suddenly everyone wants to study her. Then Kalan, an albino student walks into her life and throws everything she has ever believed out the window. Now she is hunting for deep family secrets determined to uncover the truth of who she is, even if it costs her life.

Adriana seems to be your typical teenager, she experiences sadness, happiness, anger, and lust like everybody else. It's her blood that makes her different. And it is her blood that sends her on a trip that could end her life. After her twin sister dies, Adriana meets a cute albino boy named Kalan. She is instantly attracted to him and bonds with him over their medical differences. Then she discovers that meeting Kalan was a little more than chance. Kalan has secrets and getting involved with him may or may not be a good thing.

The Eve Genome is a rather complicated story. There is a lot going on. First you have the idea of this never before seen blood type, you have the science behind it; which I am going to say can be confusing if you don't know anything about science, and you have this whole other side, the dark side. What exactly is this dark side I speak of? Well I can't exactly tell you, but I can tell you that it provides quite a twist for the story. One that will definitely take you by surprise. So yes it is a good twist.

The story is a good story, in fact I think it is a great idea. However, I did feel like some things were a little rushed, like her meeting Kalan and just instantly deciding to jump in a car with the guy and travel cross country. There were times where I felt the story was disjointed. Like it was pieces of a puzzle that didn't quite fit together. I love the twist that Joanne Brothwell gives us in this story, but I didn't exactly like the way the story got there.

I truly believed that the secret of Adriana's blood type was going to be dangerous and that it was going to be a secret that would knock my socks off; and it did by the way. But it appears the characters who showed the most fear and were the most secretive actually knew very little. Which in turn left me a little confused.

The characters were just okay. I didn't really seem to connect much with Adriana. Most of the characters seemed only skin deep and there were times I didn't really understand their purpose in the story. But Kalan was probably my favorite, sweet, strong, and determined. Then there was Marcus, the confidant and overly cocky jerk who I wanted to punch with every turn.

The Eve Genome overall is a good story and I have to say is totally different from every other story that I have read. But it was not the story for me, all the pieces just didn't add up. But who knows, maybe this is your story. Do I think it is good enough to read? Yes. Do I think you should give it a shot? Yes. After all, you might be the glue that makes those puzzle pieces fit together.

A tale of intrigue and possibilities twined between sisters, their genetics, and the concept of the 'First Eve'.

The story opens with an analytical quote about mankind's beginnings, setting the groundwork for the foundation yet to come. Quotes continue with each chapter, building the mystery yet revealing clues. They were a nice 'take a peek' method of keeping the reader reading.

I found the concept of one (or in this case) twins possessing a true genetic link to the First Eve very thought-provoking. The angle the author chose forced me to examine my own beliefs and ability to widen my scope of possibilities. I always love it when a fictional story does that.

The writing is intense at times, suspenseful even within the shortest of scenes. Action, the pace speeds up as more genetic details unfurl. Multiple point of views is used to introduce the reader to the characters and give a more intimate connection with each. The characters are well described and unique. I especially liked Adriana and her real, strong, damaged, feminine feel; it complimented her feisty fighter persona well. As did I enjoy Kalan's quiet and soulful demeanor, and the other male lead--Marcus. The manner in which they are brought together to adopt a common mission defines them even more.

With the untimely death of her sister, Adriana is left as the focal point of a genetic testing center. Though she tries to move forward with her life, things become blurry and unsure. Kalan enters the story, a nice guy who happens to be an albino and might--just might--have more in common with Adriana than she wants to discover. As the story revs up, questionable building blocks of Adriana and her twin sister's make up rear their ugly heads.

When a new surprising roadblock hampers any genetic investigation, Kalan opens up about his theories regarding her sister's death, the genetic center, and even her family as a whole. Upping the ante even more, the two soon uncover facts that may or may not be true, sending both on an emotional tightrope. A tightrope that might even connect to Adriana's mother. Eventually, experiments go awry and the three must delve into the danger zone of the genetic center to retrieve what's theirs or the consequences could be catastrophic.

I'd recommend this story to the New Adult reader. Mature subjects are present, but handled delicately and with care.

THE EVE GENOME is a storyline that borders science fiction, romance and the paranormal. The premise follows Adriana Sinclair and the blood abnormalities that have led to her twin sister’s demise and the discovery that there is more to the blood disorder than DNA-there is genetic manipulation and scientific experimentation. There are several characters whose stories have yet to be told and the presumption that the missing are dead and gone is something that no one is willing to admit.

The storyline reads like a study in psychological and scientific manipulation. From the outset the reader is pulled into a story of four- twenty something adults-good and evil; black and white; power and control. Two sets of identical twins who are identical in appearances only but with the building paranormal and supernatural powers, will be more alike than not.

With the discovery of gene manipulation and scientific experimentation the storyline characters will uncover the secrets to their existence and in doing so with realize that their genes can be traced back to the origins of man. While two were given up at birth, all four were kept in the dark as it pertained to their genetic mutations and DNA anomalies. As their powers begin to manifest and surface so do the people hoping to locate their whereabouts.

Joanne Brothwell has written a storyline that will have you asking about the ‘what ifs and whys’ of genetic research and gene manipulation. If you could create the ‘perfect baby’ what lengths would you go to see it through?

The Eve Genome is a story of suspense and mystery all wrapped up nicely in a science fiction bow. Brothwell has taken a subject of scientific controversy and put her own spin on what could happen if the people in charge thought they could take over for God.

Fun, Smart and full of Sciencey Goodness! I really enjoyed this book. It was full of intelligent bio-scifi without losing it's flow. The characters were intelligent and original which was refreshing after so many crappy teenage romance novels. None of that here. It was especially wonderful to see a teenage female protagonist with some guts and brains, without losing her vulnerability. The main protagonists are flawed but loveable in a completely believable way. I loved how Brothwell used multiple scientific ideas (primordial mitochondria, symbiosis, twin divergence) and brought it together with character based story telling. She even ventured into cultural territory with issues of abuse and incest. Very daring and exciting work.

My favorite line was when Kalan comments on his professor: "I could just see him on his recumbent bike..." That was brilliant storytelling, giving us insight into Kalan's mind AND a clear image of the professor.

There were a few typos and formatting snaffus, but nothing profound and nothing at all that hindered my enjoyment of the book. Mostly there were some over used words (tears zigzagged a lot and I'm not sure how that works and Brothwell likes the word clavicle), but the overall quality of the text is extremely good. I thoroughly enjoyed the secondary characters and would love to have more of Marcus, Tait, Malcolm and the scientists. I'm not sure if this work would support a sequel but if Brothwell were to write one, I'd be excited to see what she did with it.

I got this book from the author, free of cost, in exchange of an honest review from my side.

Firstly I would like to thank Joanne Brothwell, author of The Eve Genome, for giving me this opportunity of reading and reviewing this fabulous book.

I just loved this book just like the other books of the author, it's unique and totally refreshing and most of all it's not cheesy at all which I can't bear. I loved Adriana's character and adored her, she is strong and confident.

Kalan is great as well and he proves to be a great emotional support for Adriana but the secret that he is keeping can change everything between them. What's that dreadful secret?

The author highlighted the vulnerable facet of Adriana's character when she mourns for her sister's loss and despair swallows her and the author used her descriptive and skilled words to explain each and every scene which made the read easy and the fantasy world believable.

There is sweet romance, loyalty, betrayals, revelation of greatest secrets which will change life long beliefs. The action scenes makes the story intriguing and enjoyable.

The secret of Adriana's bloodline and the quest she takes for revealing it forms a major part of this story and the author did justice with the story by utilizing it's potential fully and efficiently.

A total page turner and a gripping read that will leave you breathless and shocked at every unpredictable twists and turns. So grab your copy and enjoy.

This is a mesmerizing.
A totally blindingly, beautifully written creation, which I had the honour of being sent to review
I would say to people who love the paranormal, or even, Sci fi, this is a amazing, very unusual story, which had me captivated from the start.
The relationships between the characters are very well conceived. Sibling rivalry, Love interest, family's deep dark secret..
Eve Genome has it all.
I will not give away any spoilers, but the relationships are magnificently intended.
Joanne has totally enthralled the readers, and I feel that anyone who has the chance should buy this book, you will not be let down.
Well Done Joanne, a superbly talented author!! and thank you for delighting us with such a charming creation.
Looking forward to the next chapter. x

Good Story

This is a good story that I enjoyed reading. There was just enough technical and scientific jargon to make it believable but not so much that became bogged down with. But I wish there have been more because it left me with too many unanswered questions . I would like to have explored what if any powers that Adrianne has and would develop, more about the Kalan and Marcus dynamics, to learned more about Victoria and Genevieve before she died and if Malcolm somehow made it out the lab alive with some of the embryos! And I would like to know what happens now with Adriana Kalan and Marcus . The story is good but it could've been so much more with these kind of details. Book 2 perhaps?

The Eve Genome offers a mixture of science fiction, romance and suspense with a very intriguing premise. A quick and quite entertaining read, it does however suffer from a problem I frequently find in short novels such as this: We get thrown headlong into the plot with very little introduction to the background, characters, etc. - a little more in the way of exposition would have been nice. Also, I never really warmed up to any of the characters... I wanted to like them, but I never really got there.

The premise was very exciting, the gene of the first woman, weird blood type, genetic conspiracy etc. I think the story needed more of an action director approach to it. It just wasn't as engaging as it should of been. Also the romance was forced, they were in love before we were rooting for them, making me roll my eyes at their declarations of their feelings instead of swooning.

The story just seemed like an episode of a scifi series not the whole story. I really wanted to love it, but I just liked it.

A great read. The Eve Genome is a rollercoaster ride from page one to the end. A unique story with exceptional characters and loads of plot twists. I always feel it’s a bonus when I learn something while reading a story without feeling like I’m supposed to be learning something. Romance and science get equal playing time. Adriana and Kalan are tested in more ways than one and you can’t help but root for them even if it’s from the edge of your seat.

This story was very different from what I normally read and yet it kept my attention page after page. Although it went into detail about chromosomes, it was never boring nor did it go over my head. It's a story of young people who are trying to not only understand what they are, but why they are different. Great book. Ms. Brothwell does a great job of bringing the characters to life and making you care. Bravo!

Review: Joanne Brothwell did a fantastic job portraying Good vs Evil in this book. A bit of mystery mixed with fantasy became a really good read. The characters were fantastically built, the plot was an A+, and the dialogue was awesome. I’d recommend this book to any Fantasy reader out there!

A dictionary and a thesaurus would help, a liberal assortment of grammatical errors and misuse of words. Interesting concept for the story, but it fails in the details. A scientist has manipulated an entire family to get certain genetic mutations trying to design "the mitochondrial Eve", and change the human race to his specifications. Clean it up and it could be a great sci-fi novel.

I found the science behind the premise interesting, but a few of the relationships between the characters were strange. There was a lot of build up, to what seemed to be resolved in a short period, without any questions answered.

Like many ebooks, this one had questionable typos and tense issues. However the storyline kept me interested.

The Eve Genome had a really interesting plot filled with cool science that bordered on the magical. The characters were all vivid and enticing, even when you didn't always want to like them. I'm really look forward to a second book to find out more about Adriana, Kalan, and Marcus!

Interesting

Kind of creepy but interesting concept. Not sure who was creepier "Uncle Les" or Malcolm. Maybe Malcolm is just scary with his disregard for people. I do know that those two men may appear in my nightmares tonight.
