The excerpts of Fr Benson's thought here are much more compelling than I had expected, and I went in with high expectations. The essays around those excerpts are likewise thoughtful, with a good balance between transparent introduction and judicious critique. Benson comes through as a man of his time (so, so very Victorian) but also as the sort of necessary eccentric produced by close and constant reading of the Christian Bible. I must seek out more of him!
