In the Star Wars®: Age of Rebellion™ roleplaying game, you and your friends take the fight to the oppressive Galactic Empire as cunning spies, cocky pilots, and dedicated soldiers in the Rebel Alliance. Each member of the Rebellion has a unique and important part to play in the galaxy-spanning conflict, and as you play Age of Rebellion, your character will leave his mark on the Star Wars universe.
The Age of Rebellion beta is a fully developed and playable system made available in a limited edition, 244-page, softcover rulebook. It includes all the rules and materials players need to enjoy countless games of Age of Rebellion; however, it is important to note that some of the elements in this beta are not representative of the final product. The beta is intended to generate useful feedback for the game's developers so that the final product will be the best possible Rebellion experience. Accordingly, the beta contains comparatively much less art and background material, and the information on adversaries, equipment, and vehicles has similarly been presented to ensure a more concise, focused playtest experience.
This is, in gamer parlance, an expansalone. While it is technically an expansion of the rules as laid out in Edge of Empire, you could do just as well buying this book alone and run a game.
That said, as someone who owns the previous book, it feels a little overpriced. Large swaths of the text are copied directly from the other book, with the only notable additions being a couple of new races, classes, and the "duty" system (to replace obligations).
The concepts as introduced work fairly well, though I had to create a lot of house rules to get my Stormtrooper campaign off the ground. An OK rulebook, but you may want to think twice if you already own the first one.
Much like its predecessor, Edge of the Empire, Age of Rebellion capitalizes on a fantastic, easy to learn and implement narrative-style game mechanic. Shifting the focus from intergalactic smuggling and the underworld, Fantasy Flight Games gives players and game masters alike the opportunity to role-play in the heroic struggle between the Empire and the Alliance to Restore the Republic. In other words, classic Star Wars in the episodes IV-VI tradition. Dare I refer to it as the spiritual descendant of the West End Games D6 system? Yes and good, clean fun!
Review of full version - not sure why only the beta is coming up here.
It is an ok, somewhat overpriced expansion to the cool system begun with Edge of Empire.
As someone that doesn't play, I was a little bit disappointed in the lower amount of in-universe lore in this one compared to some of the Edge of the Empire books that I've read. Your mileage may vary on that point.
As a gaming system, it seems like one I would love to try out someday.
