Okay I have to say that I am an absolute IDIOT because I did not realize that I was reading the second book in a series and man was I pissed because I was like crap I am going to miss something but I had to wing it and continue reading and to my surprise Holy Hades Sandra did a wonderful job of filling in my crazy blanks without having to read the first book so I was happy!

Seanna is on a mission to find out who she is and why she is the way she is. See the love of her life created her and crafted her after many failed attempts on his behalf. But Seanna knows there is something wrong with her well not wrong but different because she can smell human emotions and she has super strength and if that is not weird enough she has this need to devour human souls.... what the hell.... she is like what is going on with me and why am I like this.

So she decides she is going to retrace Samuel's steps and find out what happened by getting answers she so desperatly needs. But as she is uncovering things she finds out what Samuel has done and she gets to see first hand the failures Samuel has left behind.

Will she continue to love Samuel or will she walk away from this life and save humankind...........

Oops! This was my first impression somewhere within the first chapter. Why? Because this is when I started putting two and two together and realized that this was a second book in the series. I swear I checked Goodreads before agreeing to review the book! Apparently I wasn’t thorough enough… I must have been distracted by the intriguing synopsis. Anyway, it turns out that it really wasn’t the end of the world. Yay! (and PHEW!) Sandra did a great job at filling in the important information, so I was able to follow along with the plot without any trouble. Now, I’m not left with the feeling that I don’t need to read the first book anymore. In fact, I’m more curious about it!

This book has absolutely everything I could possibly want in a dark fantasy novel! Dynamic characters with complex motives and conflicts; sexual tension; violence and gore. The best thing about fantasy novels is that anything goes! Mythical creatures and even things that go bump in the night.

What was most amazing was that even though I had jumped into the story at the midway point, I still got a very clear vibe about the characters and their personalities. I could feel Seanna’s anger and confusion, and even though I wasn’t clear on how she had gotten there, I knew that her emotions were genuine. Seanna isn’t your standard heroine. She isn’t weak, but she isn’t all powerful either. She is coming to grips with her changing being, learning about herself and what she can handle. She is very relatable and very real.

I am so excited to dig into Butterfly Harvest now, to see where it all began! I’m looking forward to getting to know Samuel better, as well as Seanna’s adoptive family. It’s going to add an extra depth to my enjoyment and understanding of this book. And then, I’ll start waiting none too patiently for the third book! EEP! A huge thank you to Sandra Campbell for being so patient with me and for being kind enough to send me a copy of the first book. Watch for my review shortly. :)

Are you afraid of the dark? Dark Migration starts out with Seanna Raines reliving her memories of a fresh killing. The story begins with a twist and keeps you on your toes the whole time. Seanna is not your average girl. She was created by Samuel whom she killed by sucking out his soul and then gained the souls of everyone he in turn killed. The question is, did she kill in self defense and will she kill again? Unfortunately, her body is starting to crave souls with greater intensity. Her guilt about the metamorphosis she is going through and killing her “maker” create conflicting emotions. She is not sure whether she loved Samuel in the true sense of the word and her fears drive her on a journey to find out more about her own creation and Samuel’s past. Her Dark Migration is fascinating and Sandra R. Campbell, the author, leads the reader into this adventure with ease.

Campbell forms visuals with words effortlessly and weaves a storyline that is scary. She creates a tension with her unique characters that immediately captures interest. The plot is a dark fantasy lover’s dream come true. The humor, budding sexual awareness, experimentation, and growth that Seanna experiences engages the reader more and more throughout the novel. The introduction of secondary characters is seamless.

Seanna’s struggles take her to South Africa where she uncovers more of Samuel’s history. It is dark and, as she meets more of his creations, she realizes there are no easy answers to her confusing emotions. Not just emotions, but something is changing deep inside her through this journey. Not only does she discover that Samuel has made more than one creation, but meeting them and trying to survive leave her with a terrifying choice.

As Seanna continues her migration into darkness, she struggles with her humanity and realizes that there are people she cares deeply about. Will she retain that humanity or will her natural instincts turn her? You will have to read this treat to find out. This is an author that needs to hit the reading radar in a big way. Dark Migration is a fabulous novel and I am anxiously awaiting the sequel to find out what happens next! - TBR topbookreviewers.com

A great sequel to Butterfly Harvest. I was not disappointed in any way. If anything Sandar Campbell’s writing has gotten better. She is very passionate and her story telling is sensual. This was a beautiful work.

Loved this. Was a true unexpected treat. I will say, this is of a series, and though "sort of has an ending" does leave with a cliff-hanger.

Well worth following along.

First off, let me say that I didn't realize that this was the second book in the series till I had already started reading it. I was worried that there would be too many holes for me to fill in, or background information that I would be missing, and that it would hinder either my understanding or enjoyment of the book. I was very surprised (and pleased) to find that the author did an excellent job with giving enough information that this book was still cohesive and clear even though I hadn't read the first! I was quite impressed by that fact.

The entire idea of this story was intriguing to me, and while it carried out a bit more then I would like personally before I started receiving "answers", my curiosity was fulfilled by the end. The fact that the author balanced telling readers information, and then showing clues really made it an interesting and engaging read.

As a character, Seanna initially seemed somewhat flat, but her depth and development did pick up later on in the book. She was a strong character throughout, just not very dynamic to start.

Overall a good read, and one I will be recommending to friend s and family - after they read the first installment of course! Kudos to the author for such an original idea.

Originally at The Secret Life of a Bookworm

The first thing I have to say about this book is that I didn't know it was a sequel! When I signed up for this tour I had no idea it was the second book in a series (otherwise I wouldn't have signed up). It never said on Goodreads that it was a sequel when I signed up, but I obviously didn't do enough research. But, I will say that I did manage to grasp what had happened in the first book. Sandra Campbell did a brilliant job of recapping what had happened. There were times when I was slightly confused, but that's my own fault for not realising it was a sequel.

I was totally confused by what Seanna was to start with. I had no idea if she was a vampire, a demon or some other weird creepy creature. But I was very intrigued by her when I did find out what she was. She has some dark and terrifying powers, but also some extremely useful powers. I loved that we got to discover everything along with Seanna because she had no idea what she was either. Seanna was a very interesting character. She was strong, powerful and extremely dangerous. She could rip someone's head off in seconds. She was pretty badass and she was so protective of her friends. She tried her hardest to look out for them and keep them safe.

I wasn't really a fan of Samuel. Hearing everything he did from Seanna made me really dislike him. He's an untrustworthy, lying, manipulative asshole. He was so obsessed with making his creatures perfect and if they weren't, he just discarded them and didn't even give them a second thought. Everything he did to Seanna and her family was awful and he lied about it all! Sure, he may have been protective of Seanna and tried to help her, but that doesn't excuse all of the horrible things he did.

Val was a character who was constantly running hot and cold. I had no idea what was going on with him for most of the book. One minute he could be about to kill Seanna and then the next he was curling up in bed with her naked. I mean, what the hell was that all about?! Can he not sleep with clothes on? His constantly changing emotions were hard to keep track of, but I did kind of like him.

I never really understood why Seanna couldn't decide how she felt about Samuel. She didn't know whether she loved him or not. I was constantly shouting at her for being so damn stupid! After everything Samuel put her through I honestly don't understand why she doesn't hate him. It makes no sense! Sure their scenes together were hot and steamy, but I just couldn't connect with them as a couple.

The storyline of this book was really interesting. It took me a couple of chapters to piece together what had happened in the previous book and then I started to enjoy it more. I was really interested in finding out what Seanna was and what had happened to Samuel. Seanna's main power was interesting and I enjoyed seeing her use it. I was also curious about Val and what his connection to Samuel was. Kendrick provided some well needed entertainment. He was such a fantastic character. I was also extremely curious to find out more about Lucy, I was positive that there was more going on with her.

There was a lot of fighting and action towards the end which really sucked me in. Seanna is such a badass when she fights. The action scenes were slightly gorey, but not too bad.

Overall, this was an enjoyable book. I'm thinking I would have enjoyed it a lot more if I'd read the first book as well, but I didn't have time for that. I'll get around to the first book at some point and then I may even re-read this one. I'm hoping there'll be a next book as well because after that ending, I want to know what's going to happen to Seanna!

Admittedly I am not the biggest reader of horror or thriller titles, but in this case I am glad I decide to take a leap and try something new. Dark Migration is the second in a series that revolves around Seanna Raines. This is important because when I started reading this book, I was lost so I did a little digging. I had no idea there was a first book and had to restart my adventure into this world. After being caught up everything was back on track and I was truly grateful for this second book. I thought we had a lot of questions unanswered leaving Butterfly Harvest and this one picked up nicely.

Seanna herself is an interesting character. She is this mix of strong and vulnerable that really makes her an approachable character. She has survived through so much already both paranormal and just plain human and in this one she seems to get some answers that start to lead her down a path instead of just throwing her this way and that. Add her internal struggle to understand what she is and if she is something that goes bump in the night or not and you have this great story that really revolves about losing humanity and finding out secrets. Personally, that's a great story to me and what a paranormal-ridden story should have.

On the flip side to that is the fact that this book had so many twists and turns you never knew what was going to happen next. NOT A BAD THING!! This is by definition a genre that should surprise you, you should never know what is going to happen next. Dark Migration has characters like Bianca and Kendrick that you aren't sure if they are coming or going and why they are really there to begin with, and others like Samuel and Val who you have so many questions about you can't tell if they are good or bad for Seanna. If all these questions and mystery aren't a mark of a great book, I clearly don't know what makes one. I'd also be amiss if I didn't mention that the growth from the first book to this one is recognizable. This one is much clearer about what is going on and you can see the development from one to the other as well. This was really a great read and I encourage you to pick it up

'Dark Migration' is the second book in the Butterfly Harvest series that continues to follow leading lady Seanna Raines. Seanna is still trying to adjust to life after killing Samuel - the 'man' she both fears and loves. She's trying to figure out who she is and what exactly she will become. As Seanna attempts to come to terms with her transformation, she decides to travel to Samuel's homeland in South Africa to seek answers. While there, she meets several of his "failed experiments" who all claim to know the truth. What they show Seanna may very well lead to her losing her grip on humanity and not accepting her fate. Should she choose life as an immortal and be with the one she loves or should she sacrifice everything to save a world that doesn't deserve to be saved?

This book was truly intriguing and had me captivated from the very first paragraph. The plot behind the story was incredibly unique and I loved getting to know as much as I could about the characters, their histories and back stories, and the strange places and happenings surrounding them. The author wrote with such great descriptions and vivid details that I could easily imagine myself right beside Seanna throughout the book. Seanna was a great main character. She's very realistic - confused, insecure, lost, heartbroken and torn between two choices that have the power to change everything. On top of these things, she also struggles to understand her transformation and the various powers she possesses. I easily identified and empathized with her early on in the book and rooted for her until the end. The plot was really fresh and fascinating. The book has a fast pace and a natural flow that had me immersed in the story almost immediately. I'm eager to see what will happen in the next book and definitely recommend this series to fans of horror and dark fantasy fiction.

Sandra R. Campbell’s dark, urban, fantasy novel, Dark Migration, is the second book in the Butterfly Harvest series. The story revolves around Seanna Raines a young woman who has become something of an enigma. Throughout the story, she struggles to come to terms with her new abilities and manage her transformation. Traumatic memories haunt her, while she tries to reconcile killing Samuel, her love, and creator, from book one. Needing answers to help put the pieces of her life together, she travels to South Africa, Samuel’s former home. There she meets a host of characters from a horrific zombie, a mysterious vampire, to a hysterical, man named, Kendrick.

It took me a while to get into Dark Harvest because starting book two before reading book one confused me. I’m not sure if this book is meant to be read alone; however, I would strongly suggest starting with the first one. The reader will be able to figure out what is going on, but the story will best be appreciated from its true beginning.

As a main character, I found Seanna to be a strong female protagonist. I liked her, but I liked Kendrick more. I enjoyed Kendrick, Seanna’s witty, loyal friend she meets on her way to South Africa. He was a breath of fresh air — a likeable, sweet, funny, and honest guy. Samuel, Seanna’s love interest, confused me. Like Seanna, I didn’t always know how I should feel about him and perhaps, that was by design. Val, the vampire, a new acquaintance of Seanna, also kept me wondering if I should trust him. One moment, he seemed to have real feelings for Seanna, the next second, I thought he might kill her, which is why I enjoyed the consistency and light-heartedness of Kendrick.

Once I became familiar with the characters and understood the premise, the book moved very rapidly, keeping me wondering and turning pages. It’s a unique story I really enjoyed and highly recommend to lovers of horror and dark fantasy.

This is a follow-up to Sandra R. Campbell's BUTTERFLY HARVEST and in the first twenty pages or so, I was really wishing I had read that one first. Happily, it is not necessary as Ms. Campbell does a marvelous job of getting you caught up with what is going on quite quickly and without lecturing you with the information. Instead you get to experience it as Seanna thinks about her recent past, her feelings for Samuel, and reads the minds of those around her.

Don't you worry though! As soon as I can, I will be getting BUTTERFLY HARVEST and re-reading both back to back!

The cast of characters is interesting, but my favorite in the beginning was Kendrick. "Seanna, you're great and all, but I was born with a hyper functioning S.M.O.A. gene. So, the less I know about this, the better." (Save My Own Ass) lol Even in the midst of a crisis after he's had a mini-meltdown, he's witty and hilarious.

I spent a good chunk of time trying to figure out what Samuel is and what he turned Seanna into. It IS explained, but first you have this build up of tension and lies and deceit - a nasty tangled web! Seanna is one of those protagonists I find most enjoyable - she is this mix of vulnerable and strong, emotional yet a fighter.

As the book progresses and you see the "monstrous" side of Seanna, you understand what "butterfly harvest" is. And you know...Zeke on the boat demonstrates that the worst monsters in the world are usually humans. *shudder*

I try to keep my reviews spoiler free, so I won't detail what Seanna learns from Bennett and Val, but I dare say you will find it fascinating!

Oh, by the way? Enjoy that cliffhanger ending! :P

Let me start this by saying I HIGHLY recommend reading the first book in this series, Butterfly Harvest first. I hadn’t read that one before I started this one and because of that it started a bit slowly for me as I was catching up on the back story, on why these things were happening, what they were talking about. After I got into the groove of things and was caught up what had happened in the previous book, I really enjoyed Dark Migration. Because I hadn’t read the first book, I assumed that Seanna was some sort of psychic vampire at first, I’m not telling you what she is, but it is really interesting. I love books that hit on the supernatural, things that appear in the myths of olds.

Though it is classified as a horror book, I would guess it was classified that way because of the gore that is involved. It wasn’t horror in the check under your bed for things that go bump in the night type of way. I wasn’t scared at all, more intrigued. I really wanted to know what Samuel and Seanna were.

One thing I liked about this book is that the characters aren’t black and white, they are definitely a shade of gray. One minute you are disgusted by one character’s behavior, then you are reassessing your thoughts on them, maybe they aren’t evil. Who knows? It’s more like every day life. Nobody is perfectly good, and not many are completely evil.

Excellent book. I’m looking forward to see what is coming next for this series. I think I also might pick up Butterfly Harvest and get more in depth information about what led up to the events that occurred in Dark Migration.

Seanna is having a hard time adjusting to her new supernatural status. Even though her family was not ideal, they are gone now and all she has left are the voices of their souls crying out in her head. Seanna begins a struggle to find out more about what she's become, and if there's anything she can so to change it.

Although this book is supposed to be a stand alone, I feel like I would have had a very hard time understanding what was going on if I hadn't read the book before it in the series, Butterfly Harvest. Dark Migration picks up immediately where Butterfly Harvest left off, and to me it didn't give too many clues about what happened in the first book.

I like Seanna, though I think at times she is a bit immature. She is basically a good person, and with the background of abuse she had, she could have turned out very different. I can't imagine going through everything she's been through and staying strong, though she does have her moments of weakness.

I also really liked that Gordon became something of a father figure for Seanna, who hadn't really experienced a comforting male presence in her life. The way she bonded with her surrogate family was also quite touching.

Dark Migration contains a supernatural idea that I have never seen before in a book, and that's something very hard to do in the literary world. I recommend this book to anyone who wants to experience something original.

So, like everyone else reviewing this here, I acquired this book from NetGalley as an advance ebook without realising it was the second in the series. I began reading it and determined that it either wasn't the first, or the writer had an impressive backstory for her character and had decided to jump right into the action. That wasn't too bad, however, because it was explained well enough for me to put the story together.

In the beginning, I enjoyed it. There was a darkness to it, the sense of a character that may have once been a genuinely decent person but was now being consumed by the shadows planted within her. The characterisation of the side characters was engaging - I particularly liked the air host, Kendrick - but overall the plot felt somewhat like it had been chopped out of a longer story, like this wasn't so much book 2 in a series, but part 2 in an epic. This was made all the more annoying by the deliberately open and cliff-hangerish ending. The romance too felt flat and unconvincing. If you can even call it romance, given the events at the end of book #1 (as I perceive them to be).

Overall, some really good ideas, but the structure and the plot did not engage or involve me as heavily as I would have liked. Whether this is because I didn't read the first one, or because too many questions were left unanswered, I don't really know.

I bought the first book in The Butterfly Harvest series (in order to fully understand "Dark Migration" - good idea to read these outstanding books in order).

The book's concept is quite unique and intriguing. Seanna Raines has a war going inside her mind and body - a man she both hates and loves - a man by the name of Simon - who basically made her into what she is.

Seanna's desire to know what she is and may become sends her on a quest to South America: homeland to Simon. She learns of secrets and atrocities committed by him and has to come to terms as to which way she will go. . .

A difficult decision she has to make - one that may break her heart or affect the fate of our world - in a fully destructive way !

A stunning read containing deeply drawn characters, emotions so deep, I could feel for Seanna's suffering which drew me into her character deeper and deeper as I turned each page. "Dark Migration" really sunk into my marrow, a book I shall not forget and one that will linger in my mind . . . truly unforgettable.

Disclosure: I received "Dark Migration" for free as a GoodReads First Reads giveaway.
The opinions in the review written above are my own.

Dark Migration is the second book in the Butterfly Harvest series. However, Sandra does such an excellent job of catching readers up that you can read the second book without having read the first. Though, I’d recommend reading the first because you get to see how Seanna (protagonist) and Samuel’s relationship began. (I’m going back to read it.)

This book is filled with supernatural beings, though my favorite character was just a lowly human by the name of Kendrick. He was hilarious and someone anyone could be friends with.

Seanna is an interesting character. I like how she struggles to accept what she’s been turned into (all thanks to Samuel) as she tries to figure out her feelings for Samuel. For the majority of the book, you’re not sure exactly what Seanna has become, and so you’re left attempting to piece together the clues along with her.

Ultimately she discovers what she is and makes up her mind about Samuel (and along the way is attacked, abducted, nearly killed, and does some killing of her own…all very exciting and horrifying).

Overall, I very much enjoyed this book and am waiting to see what happens next! (Stupid cliffhangers…)

Ok! This is going to be a half review... I'm an idiot! When I signed up for this fabulous tour, I mean read that synopsis and look at that cover, I did not realize this was book two. And I was so excited to read this but I have to explain a few things.

First, I like the characters. They are interesting and there's so much about them, and so much in here, but I want to know more. (insert let's read book one you fool!)

Secondly, I really enjoyed reading Sandra R. Campbell's writing. I think it is very good and alluring. I mean she has a great way of bringing you into the book and showing you what every character is feeling.

However, I felt like I was missing so much! There was quite a bit that seemed like it was probably added in from book one but I'm giving an honest review from just reading book two. I can be done but I think I need to go get book one and then redo this review because I'm sure it's going to be different!

All in all, if you enjoy paranormal romance, I think you'll enjoy this. Just start with book ONE!

So like many of the other reviewers, I too didn't realized I was reading the second book in a series, BUT, it didn't really matter. Sandra did such a good job of giving enough information that you could pick up the story, but not so much that you were practically re-reading the first book.
I liked this book, I really did. The ending made me want to punch something though, I hate cliffhangers!
This book found a really good balance between telling and showing. You got information in different ways and descriptions were good without being over the top and boring.
The story was..... well I'm not sure how to classify the story, no-one seems to understand that they need to pick a side (good or bad) and stick to it, which was fun to follow.
I liked the main character. She wasn't a whiny, why me TDTL girl. Sure she had regrets but she wasn't going to just give in without a fight, which made me like her, even in some of her 'darker' moments.
I'm going to have to go and read the first book now....

Haven't received my copy yet, just received notice I had won. 11/25/13
Received my copy and hope to start soon. Have 12 others plus my current read in front. 12/14/13
Started 1/10/14
Finished 1/11/14

Seanna is running away. She has killed Samuel, the man she loves and fears. Before his death he had changed her, given her special gifts and these gifts scare her. She is determined to find the others like her and travels to South Africa to find them. Will the other like her accept her? Will she accept her new self?

okay, this book was a more mature version of Twilight, with a few exceptions. First, Seanna isn't a whiny helpless girl. She is a bit older and acts a lot older than Bella. The abilities and non-human creatures are a bit more realistic than the typical YA fare, but the story was a bit predictable and lagged it spots. It was an okay read for they young adult genre, but would probably drop a star when compared to more adult literature.

I was given this book for free, by Net Gallery, in return for an honest review.

I started this book not realising it was the second in the series, so I was quite confused for the first few chapters until I realised my mistake. I think I would have enjoyed the book more if I knew the back story of the characters, but once I got into it it wasn't such an issue. It was quite an unusual story, I haven't read anything similar before and it had a lot of twists and turns, you definitely couldn't guess what would happen next. I found it hard to care about many of the chatacters, but again I feel this is more to do with a lack of having known how their relationships had developed in the earlier book, rather than anything wrong with this one. Overall it was an intresting read, set in a very imaginative world, but I was a bit disappointed with the abrupt ending.

At first, I was lost in the book, since I had not read the first one...but Ms. Campbell does a wonderful job at catching you up on things you don't know happened. I do believe I will be going back and reading book one so I can be totally caught up for the next book. I am glad I took the chance on this book and would recommend reading the books back to back so you don't have to play catch up like I did.
I did receive this book free in exchange for an honest review. I hope you enjoyed it like I did!
