While attending college in Philadelphia in the early twentieth century, Steve Richter developed an interest in the involvement of the United States in building a canal in Panama. Believing he lost the love of his young life, he signed up to go there to build the canal. During the voyage there, he meets Willy, who becomes his best friend. He soon discovers what a hostile country he had landed in with its jungle, heat and diseases. His ability to speak German helps him to remove himself from some of those elements, but ends up having him confront pirates on a mystery ship. Later Willy is kidnapped and taken to a South American country and his only hope of rescue is with Steve and the U.S. Marines. The woman he left in Philadelphia comes to Panama to be with him, but he is accused of a crime by another woman and must stand trial. It is up to a Panamanian lawyer to help him and he comes up with a clever plan to help Steve change his life and that of Willy's.
