Between running her gran’s Seabreeze Bookshop and beginning work on the store’s updated web site, Rue Collier is happy to see one of her favorite customers, Whitney Ackerman. Normally bubbly and brimming with humor-filled stories, Whitney is unusually subdued. Apparently, she has to prepare for an upcoming family reunion at her stately house—with forty-two guests. But when someone close to Whitney is found murdered in the pool house prior to the reunion, Rue is driven to do everything in her power to help her dear friend cope. And with a killer at large, she quickly discovers a slew of unexpected clues in her effort to solve the case. Will Rue be able to pin down the killer before it’s too late? Or will she be permanently erased from the picture? This fun-filled and clean bookshop cozy mystery will have you guessing until the very end.
Penny Brooke has been reading mysteries for as long as she can remember. When not penning her own stories, she enjoys spending time outdoors with her husband, crocheting, and cozying up with her pups and a good novel.
Rue and Andy’s latest case was a heartbreaking one for the family involved who’d just lost their husband/father recently as well, but a crazy twist toward the end told everyone that some family members were keeping some huge secrets. At least when Rue confronted the killer this time, there was a nice crowd surrounding her, and the arrest itself was actually funny to picture—you’ll have to read it and see why Andy arresting someone was cause for giggles!
I love this cozy mystery series, set in bookshop in Somerset Harbour, Seabreeze Cove. Run by Rue while her Gran, who owns the shop is off travelling the world. Rue's become a bit of a sleuth, solving murders which happen in the seaside town.
Book 9 is about a good customer of the shop, Whitney; how she's changed from a happy lady to someone who barely raises a smile in the past few weeks. She puts it down to a big family reunion, but Rue isnt sure. When the unthinkable happens and someone close to Whitney dies, Whitney changes beyond all recognition. Her daughters are very concerned so Rue steps in to try and find them closure. What she does is end up with more than one murder on her hands and more questions than answers.
Of course there's Gatsby the dog, Beasley and Ollie the cats and Zack, the shop parrot on hand to provide help, and comfort when needed.
This is a great series, very readable and each book easily completed in a few hours. The books are all standalone stories but they are best read in order of publication to preserve continuity of the characters and series.
If you like this series, try others by the same author; Word Travels Mobile Bookshop and Garden Cove Library are both series I've read and very much enjoyed.
Rue Collier runs her grandmother’s Seabreeze Bookshop and seems to attract murders to solve in between. This time, she notices one of her best customers, Whitney Ackerman, is not acting with her usually happy, bubbling attitude. She seems sad and quiet. She is hosting a big upcoming family reunion with 42 guests, but even so, this is not like her.
As she was closing the bookshop, her detective friend Andy, stopped in. He told her that Whitney's oldest daughter Candace’s body was discovered having been stabbed out in the pool house of the family home, the knife still sticking out of her chest. The police were assuming someone in the family killed her since it was unlikely a random intruder would do this with so many people wandering around. But with the reunion, the police had many witnesses to question. And there would be many secrets to be uncovered. Rue will need to get involved to help Whitney and her family find the truth of what happened. Will she track down the murderer? Is she putting her own life at risk?
This was a well-written story with characters described well and the reader pulled into the excitement. Grab your copy and follow the clues with Rue!
This cozy was a little more on the serious, darker side than those I usually read but it was so well written, heartfelt and poignant that I enjoyed it all the same.
Very character driven, the story relies on the realistic and developed cast which drew me in and made me invested in their stories and outcomes. Rue is a sympathetic, likeable female sleuth and her method of investigating seemed both genuine and plausible.
There are some lovely pets and a quaint bookstore to round out the book. The descriptions are well done and the mystery was captivating. All together this was a page-turner of a book and can be read as a standalone.
