"Sudden deaths are the worst, because we can't have that time to cope. Sometimes that sadness leaves a deep scar that lasts for one's entire life."

What an emotional volume! This third episode has been one hell of a ride from the very beginning and I must admit I cried several times out of frustration, pain and sadness. Cruelty is disgusting but Eva-Beatrice has proven to be the worst Golden Witch.

Now, I don’t want to give away too many spoilers but some characters deserve the best and all they got is gruesome deaths. Truth be told, this battle between Beatrice and Battler gets better and better and the stakes are way too high.

We get to know a little bit more about characters like Eva and her husband, but we also see that Kinzo was never a good nor caring father to his children. He always asked for more than they could give and so, these adults became vicious, selfish and they do not mind to hurt others in order to accomplish their goals.

In spite of that, Eva found herself a good husband and they both raised a good son such as George. The same happens with Jessica, whose parents could have done better if they wanted to. Still, the duality of all these characters is what makes them real and so, when something bad happens to them, you feel their pain and their angst.

I think this author knows what he is doing because he often plays the minds and the emotions of his audience. He makes crave for answers but at the same time, we’re scared to know them, to acknowledge that our fav characters are not gonna make it.

Oh, I wish I’d have the power to make my fav ship happy, because they deserve it, but then I remember this is a murder/mystery and nobody gets their happy ending, even if I crave it…

Anyway, I devoured this volume (and it’s +600 long!) so I really cannot wait for the next Episode, the next game where Ange, Battler’s young sister, finally comes into the picture!

Trigger warnings: Graphic murders, torture, occult, and psychotic breakdowns.

Finally, a survivor from the island only the survivor knows what happened. Battler almost gave in and realised that no one was on the human side.

Beatrice game board is too perfect, and the family is trapped endlessly being used as pawns over and over.

Never underestimate Beatrice, the golden witch. Was it a bad ending? Probably not, but it isn't the true ending to the series.

A new character enters the board. Will they be able to determine what happened on the island 12 years ago?

Slowly, the reader has to put the fragments in place, but... Can we prove a human hand could have done this?

We shall see.

Onward to episode 4.

This volume of the manga hilariously features many cute Beatrice expressions. It opens with a striking Kyrie moment: "Don’t make me laugh, you silly little girl... How could you understand the madness of a woman whose man was stolen from her, consumed by jealousy for eighteen years...?" This subtly hints at the depths of Kyrie’s character revealed later on.
Eva-Beatrice’s divergence from Eva is further emphasized—she even kills Hideyoshi—while in this chessboard’s "reality," Kyrie and Rudolf confront Hideyoshi to question whether Eva confessed to the murders and if he provided her a false alibi.
In the climax, Beatrice "sacrifices" herself to declare witches don’t exist in this chessboard. A moved Battler is welcomed to the Golden Land, where family members await his signature acknowledging Beatrice as a witch. But he soon realizes it’s a ruse: Beatrice’s cruelty was never truly subdued.
The arc ends with everyone dead except Eva. Here, Battler and Beatrice conclude the culprit isn’t the witch Eva-Beatrice but the real Eva Ushiromiya. This is just one chessboard scenario, though, distinct from actual events.
Twelve years later, Eva dies at 62—hounded by society, grief-stricken over her husband and son, and refusing to reveal the truth. She’d lived with Ange, Rudolf and Kyrie’s daughter, who missed the island trip due to illness. Convinced Eva murdered her parents, Ange resents her. Even on her deathbed, Eva rebuffs Ange’s pleas: "But I won’t be telling you!!!" (but in fact she didn’t tell Ange for fear that Ange would collapse knowing … )
Consumed by exhaustion, Ange loses her will to live. With the "culprit" dead and no one left to avenge, she attempts suicide—only to be stopped by Bern, the Witch of Miracles, who promises to help her uncover the twelve-year-old mystery.
This episode cleverly frames Eva as the culprit, inviting reader resentment like Ange’s—a contrast to the real truth that hits painfully. Without love, one cannot see the truth. Tragically, in Episode 8, even after learning , Ange still furiously insists that "Eva is the killer"…
Overall, Episode 3 is undeniably lengthy—I spent a month playing through it. While characterizations deepen and the truth unfolds, its pacing could be tighter. Still, an 8.5/10 for its narrative depth.

So we've come to the end of Episode 3. Episode 3 was probably my favorite when I watched the anime because of the amount of character growth. It was also my least favorite because of the "character growth."

I love characters and watching them grow and change. Beatrice's realization that maybe she's been an awful person (to put it mildly) and trying to right the wrongs really spoke to me. Was it cliche? Definitely, but that doesn't put a damper on me liking the 1000+ year-old realizing that for mere mortals, life is precious.

Then Ryukishi07 does a Shyamalan-esque twist, and I don't mean the good ones. I went into this knowing the twist from watching the anime, so I was watching for any hints I might have missed the first time going through this story arc. There's a difference between telegraphing and foreshadowing, but knowing the twist you should be able to pick up on subtle clues. I didn't notice anything. So the twist still kind of comes out of nowhere for me. That's not to say I don't like the result of the twist. I just think it could have been foreshadowed a bit more. Or maybe I just missed all the signs entirely. It's hard to say.

Arguably Umineko at its peak. Grisly killings, thought provoking mysteries, and a nail-biting game between Battle & Beatrice (and then Battler & Eva) make this such a good read. Episode 3 also has the best balance between game board and meta world. Eva's breakdown in the game is excellent and Battler finally getting his bearings (but subtly getting played the whole time) is genius storytelling. Several manga panels also make it clear that Beatrice isn't entirely lying to Battler, which I really appreciate and adds more depth to their relationship this early.

The whole ending sequence is unforgettable – Battler almost giving up the whole game without realizing it only to be saved last-minute by Ange is the perfect lead-in for Episode 4. While I'm curious as to what Land of the Golden Witch would have looked like, the Banquet we got is sublime.

Okay.
WOW.

Banquet of the Golden Witch wasn't my favorite. The story was still very interesting (hence my good ratings) but this arc didn't convince me as much as the previous ones.

Until this volume.

The plot twist was phenomenal. I thought the developments were weird, but they all made sense in the end. The last chapters freaked me out, and I highly enjoyed the behind the scenes with the tea party, as well as the time jump.

The art style is perfect as always. I can feel all the emotions on the page thanks to the visuals alone. The angry and malicious faces are my favorite. They're truly scary!

The game is on once again.
Can't wait to get to know our new player.

*Visual novel not the manga*

Umineko has so much potential and my god, this was exceptional. Entertaining in every sense, some good stuff here, some weak stuff. Beatrice continues to kill it as an antagonist and has a killer moment here. There's so much potential to go from here, and I hope it continues to evolve from here.

One of the more confusing Question Arcs, and this manga version adds more wrenches to solving it. I still like it, especially with my knowledge of future arcs.

Yen Press wants you to know this book is chocked full of blood , violence, and all around bad lanuae short of swearing so it is rated Older teen so behave and wait till you are older if you are not a mature teen or this book series might give you nightmares. :)

Part two of the 3rd Episode and the new witch on the block has been handling the murders needed for her resurrection Meanwhile Beatrice does her best to get Battler to accept her as his opponent after angering him severely in the last book. Compared to the other books I like the cuter Beatrice better then the usual psycho witch. This book also introduces a new character that will be a major player in the next episode so look forward to her arrival if you are interested in this series. Look forward to the end. It has a bit of a twist at the end of the book so look forward to it.

The part of the book I like best is when Battler refuses to accept old Beatrice as his opponent and instead pulls the new one into the world he has been arguing with old Beatrice in up to now. I assure you his anti magical disbelief power is over 9000. :)

3.5✨

✨Writing a grouped review for the entirety of the manga and copy/pasting. I started reading this 6 months ago at the time of writing and read over a few months and don't remember specifics about every single volume except what I rated them ✨

Umineko has an intriguing premise and good execution which does a lot right. The author manages to create such eerie and scary atmospheres and have the reader on edge wondering what is going to happen next. I particularly enjoyed a lot of the locked room scenarios and discussions and explanations.

Where this manga fails is it's extreme repetitiveness. It wears down on the reader very quickly. As a result I'm not sure this is a manga I would recommend to many people.

I will eventually watch the anime, whilst a short run this may be something I'd be inclined to recommend more as the premise itself is well done.

Really just an amazing volume. Of course, I already knew all the plot twists and turns, since I'd already read the VN, so what I was looking for was embellishment. And boy did I get it! The scenes looked amazing! The most critical scene to get right in this volume, the banquet scene, was absolutely perfectly drawn. And there were added components that made old tear-jerker scenes even more heartbreaking. I can't recommend it more wholeheartedly than I am. This is exactly what I've been wanting to see in an Umineko manga adaptation.

Still fresh and full of surprises, the 6th book of Umineko closes with some truly unexpected new players. It's a long haul for a horror manga, but one that's well worth it if you don't mind some fantasy and gore in your late-night ghost stories.
