I stored this review away for a year. I read a year ago to my Nephew Christmas 2019 and didn't have time to put the review up, so here it is. I didn't have a lot to say about it, I don't think I was too impressed with it from what I wrote.
Two mice explore the gifts Santa has left the morning of Christmas. It is cute and for beginning readers. The artwork has a very cozy 50s feel to it. It's going for the warm fuzzies.
The nephew went a little crazy for the cute mice. He loves anything with tricksters and trouble makers and he loves Christmas. He gave this 3 stars.
Here's another childhood favorite I've recently rediscovered. As a greedy little girl eager for what goodies might be lurking under the Christmas tree, Scarry's paintings of dolls, stuffed animals, and other toys thrilled me to my very core. Many years, and many pounds later, it's the lovingly rendered images of candy and cookies that rock my world.
Of all the Christmas books, this is one of the most Christmassy!
Really, could the illustrations be any cuter? Sure, the story isn't anything amazing or stunning, but it is sweet and fun - and for what it is, it works.
And did I mention how adorable the illustrations are!?
My mom gave this book to my son for Christmas. I didn't recognize the cover of this book, but as soon as I started reading it to him I recognized all of the illustrations. I especially remembered the page that shows cookies hanging from strings. As I looked through the book I had a definite memory of reading it in my bedroom at my grandma's house. Funny how certain images from the best picture books stay so vividly in the recesses of your memory to be recalled at random. Maybe my son will have a similar experience some day. For now, he enjoys looking for the two mice on each page of this Christmas classic.
ETA December 2018: L (age 4) really enjoys this book now, too. It's one of my favorites from our Christmas collection.
ETA December 2022: I still really enjoy this one, and all of the kids still do, too.
My son loves this book. Before he could read he would have me read it over and over again to him. We hadn't read it in about a year and the other day I took it off the shelf and he read it to me. This time not by memory. It was the first book that he read in full to me and it was great! Good story and an overall cute book. Hearing my son read it to me was great!
Not much of a story for the over-5 set, but the illustrations are, in typical Richard Scarry fashion, enchanting. He mixes colour and joy with a disarmingly clever dash of realism. It's easy to believe these mice are excited to celebrate Christmas and anxious to get their gifts even though, or, perhaps, because they look so much like real life mice. It's an interesting contrast to his usual anthropomorphic animal characters. It's always exciting to see one of your favourite artists show off range you didn't know they had.
A story about two curious mice. They were wondering around wondering why Santa had brought. They got the first peek and though that Santa had forgotten about them......when alas, they found the big slice of cheese he left just for them. Pretty pointless!!
If you love Richard Scarry, as I do, you can't lose with this wonderful little tale of the adventures of a couple of mice on Christmas Eve. A board book whose story that can be enjoyed from the youngest on up to adults, this is a favorite I pull out every Christmas.
This is a very old children’s Christmas book. My daughter and I found at our community free little library. The illustrations in the book are very cute. The story is very short of two little mice who are worried Santa had forgotten them. It was an okay story but the pictures were the best!
This board book is all about two little mice running around the presents Santa left. If this were real life, there would be mouse shit all over the family's Christmas celebration.
I know. I know. Christmas has come and gone. 🎄 Please bear with me. This little book did not land on my holds shelf at the library until after the new year. 📚 Who can resist a Richard Scarry classic about Christmas morning? Two little mice are the first to wake up. 🐭 They check out the mantel, the stockings, and the presents under the tree. 🎁 (There is even a puppy!) 🐶 The illustrations show them nestling into the stockings, peeking out of a gingerbread house, riding in a toy convertible, and more. Did Santa remember these two little mice when he came down the chimney in the night? 🎅Here's a hint: 🧀.
A short, but cute little story about two mice who go around a house on Christmas morning, enjoying what gifts Santa brought, but feel a little left out of the festivities. My rating - 2/5
Richard Scarry's "Christmas Mice" finds two little mice on Christmas morning discovering the gifts that Santa left for everyone else. They explore candy, dolls and even a race car. But where is the gift for the mice themselves? That is the tension of this average children's Christmas story.
A bright classic "Little Golden book" where the cute mice wake up first on Christmas morning and check out the stockings, new pet and beautifully decorated gifts under the tree. Did Santa forget to give the two tiny mice a gift? What do mice like the most? The illustrations are adorable as the mice discover they are not forgotten by Santa and indeed receive a special gift (not spoiling the surprise here!).
This board book is a great Christmas book to read with the kids. My kids are 3 and 5 and they loved it. The bright colorful illustrations had them discussing this story with me. These two cute little mice worried that Santa might have brought everyone a Christmas present but them.
