I have had this book read to me & I have read this over seven times too. It’s one of my favorites that my mom would read me when I was little.
Four puppies grow up during the season changes of spring, summer, fall, & winter. They cry as each season changes not wanting it to go which was so cute.
A little red squirrel tells them about each season as it happens.
The book ended back at spring and the puppies weren’t puppies anymore & knew about all the seasons. It’s a great learning book.
This is one of the few golden books that stayed with me alongside of The Poky Little Puppy. This story is a celebration of the changing seasons as the newborn pups are born and it takes them through the changing seasons. As a metaphor of life as well, they learn to have passion for the different stages and mourn when they have to let go of each season. However, they soon discover that there is something as wonderful but different in the next. I wish I still had this one on my shelf. It is a story of life as much as anythinbg.
My grandma gave me this Little Golden Book in the 1980s and it has stayed with me through the years. Originally published in 1960, Four Puppies is a book of exploration, change, awareness, nature and adaptation.
Favorite Passage: "You silly-billies - there's nothing to cry about," said a friendly red squirrel in the hickory tree. "When the leaves turn red and yellow and come off the trees it means that SUMMER is over and FALL has come. Why, you'll just have more fun than ever!" And the squirrel was right. Leaves as crisp as cornflakes covered the ground. The four little puppies scuffed around in leaves and buried themselves under leaves and kicked leaves up in the air. They had so much fun that they hated to go inside - even when there were lamb chops for supper!
One of my childhood favorites. First of all, the collie puppies are ADORABLE. Such playful little scamps! So cute watching them grow bigger with each season! Second, they represent me and my whining about change (until I finally accept that sometimes the new thing has positive attributes also) very well.
This was my favorite book when I was toddler. I would ask my family to read it to me over and over again. I found a copy of it to give my niece, hope she enjoys it as much as I did! I love the story and the illustrations!
This is one of the books that started my love of books and reading, it was always a favourite of mine, I can remember asking for it to be read many times.
A wonderful way to teach young children about the changing seasons. I had to laugh when I realised that I was reading it out loud to myself! And everybody needs a friendly red squirrel in thier life.
This book is about four little puppies getting bigger and bigger. They are learning about each season. This is a cute little book about enjoying each season.
This was another cute story but not amazing to me. I'm sure a child would enjoy this enough to rate it 5 stars but I'm not a child, so it's a 4 star read to me. Not bad, though, of course.
In this classic story, a set of four collie pups grow up through a year and experience each season with its surprises and fun (playing in leaves in fall, in the snow in winter, etc). As they get bigger they notice their changes in size by the fact that the front steps they romp down are easier and easier to traverse. My five year old liked this.
I watched part of the Puppy Bowl this afternoon and got very excited about it, so Mommy read me this book before my evening nap. It was just as exciting as the Puppy Bowl. I was kicking my feet, wiggling, and making noise every time she turned the page and I got to see more puppies. They all looked like my dog Chloe, who is one of my favorite things in the world.
One of my favourite books as a child, this short Little Golden Book tells the story of four puppies and their discovery of the different seasons. If you are fortunate enough to find the read-along cassette tape it is well worth the listen. Otherwise, it's a great read aloud!

This was my favorite book as a preschooler and it has deep life lessons for adults too. It teaches you that you can't hold on to keep life from happening and you have to accept change.
