Liam Lansing is heir to a prominent family of bio-modified vampires. That is, until he chooses the wrong lover and is cast down to the Gutter to scrape for his life.
Daniel Harding is heir to Cybernetix and a prince of the corporate Sky. That is, until his ideology drives his father to put a price on his head, forcing him into the Gutter.
Years of anger and a heap of mods have kept Daniel and Liam apart. They have no reason to trust each other, but a bargain that began with the simple urge to live soon reminds them of the love they once shared. Together, they plan to rip open the hidden corruption that runs the Sky—for vengeance, for justice, and for hope. Only through courage in the face of death—or worse—might Daniel and Liam change the world they live in and create something new under the sun.
This box set includes the following - A Chip in His Shoulder - Something New Under the Sun
L.A. Witt and her husband have been exiled from Spain and sent to live in Maine because rhymes are fun. She now divides her time between writing, assuring people she is aware that Maine is cold, wondering where to put her next tattoo, and trying to reason with a surly Maine coon. Rumor has it her arch nemesis, Lauren Gallagher, is also somewhere in the wilds of New England, which is why L.A. is also spending a portion of her time training a team of spec ops lobsters.
Authors Ann Gallagher and Lori A. Witt have been asked to assist in lobster training, but they "have books to write" and "need to focus on our careers" and "don't you think this rivalry has gotten a little out of hand?" They're probably just helping Lauren raise her army of squirrels trained to ride moose into battle.
This was a rather good futuristic/PNR duology that featured second chance romance, humans vs. technology, and a fast-paced suspenseful plot. The romance could be considered more of a subplot. There are some steamy encounters and a bit of angst, but mostly the focus of the book and all that MCs are doing in the course of it is revenge, attempts at social justice and seeking the answers to the questions - when does the technology change a human into a cyborg and how to find the fine line between the two.
The story of Liam and Daniel started many years ago, but due to prejudice and circumstances they were separated and the feelings of love have turned to resentment. When they meet again years later, both have changed on the outside and the inside. When they realize that they've been played and manipulated, they choose to work together to survive despite their distrust of each other. But many revelations between them show that what they thought was not true and that the feelings long buried were still alive and stronger than ever.
The race is on to survive, to bring their enemies down and save the people they love. Daniel is tested in more ways than he ever imagined, and Liam sees just how much he has changed. The book's events span less than a week but both MCs go through intense physical and mental transformation in order to make sure the justice prevails. But they have each other. And after dust settles, they are free to live their lives. It was a suspenseful, thrilling action-packed story. I liked it. I recommend it.
I absolutely love L.A. Witt’s work! Editing is on point as always. I had the first book in the duo separately downloaded not realizing it was just a teaser starter. Very glad I had this collection. Highly recommend!
I really liked the world building; I thought the descriptions of the Gutter were great - almost like I was there breathing the smoggy air, squinting around through the dimness trying not to be conspicuous. Seeing the poor suffering & slaving to exist.
What didn't work for me:
Other than a small paragraph where Liam explains to Daniel that yes, he is angry about being outed to his parents & as a result being kicked out of his home then losing everything & having to prostitute himself then becomes an assassin in the Gutter, then little snippets being thrown out by either character about how one is this or that - there is no back story. We're just told that these guys have a history, they were lovers & expected to believe it. How did they meet? How did they fall in love? What made Daniel so against Liam's mods that he felt he had to betray him? These are things that bother me.
When Liam sees Daniel again after 5 years, he's ready to cheerfully do the hit on him for Daniel's betrayal (& the $10 mil) but then all of a sudden he still loves Daniel?
Then there's Daniel who's so anti-mod that he betrays Liam (knowing that Liam will be forced to live in the Gutter) because he feels so strongly about Liam getting modded (at least that's what I figured out) and he becomes a terrorist to prevent modding. Yet when Liam and Anna's life are in danger he becomes adamant about getting a permanent mod.
Also when Liam & Daniel go to tell Liam's father about the UV mod conspiracy, Liam's mother is very specific about what will happen if Liam's father lets Liam leave, yet she stood by & didn't do anything to defend him when he was cast out the first time.
I had a very difficult time with all these contradictions.
This was Terminator meets Vampires in an kick-a$$ action romance. Liam and Daniel are fantastic characters who I couldn't help but care about! I'm glad I got this series as an entire book! Wonderful sci-fi mm romance read!
