David Kirk is the creator of children's books that follow the character Miss Spider. Before writing books, he made colorful toys that were sold in hand-painted boxes. He was urged to write children's books when his toys caught the interest of a book packager. It wasn't difficult to figure out what he would use as characters in his stories: his daughter, Violet, had a liking for bugs.

On a planet where metal robots with spikes and gadgets were an everyday thing, Nova wanted to build a pet that was uniquely his. Poor Twinkle the hedgehog had a rough start to his new family. It wasn’t his fault he shocked his loved ones. This story is in a completely different world, unable to abide by the technology we have today. The innovation Nova had to create his own pet gives children something to think about. They might ponder how is it possible? Why a robot hedgehog? Because it is science-fiction of course!

This science fiction book touches on many aspects of the genre. There is a robot which is definitely a futuristic concept. There is innovation as the robot creates a hedgehog. The book starts directly in a futuristic setting with these robots living their lives just as humans would. This defies the laws we abide by today so it is seen as science-fiction.

I would classify the book as a Cyberpunk Science fiction book. This book highlights science fiction books because of the amount of creation with technology and new gadgets in the book. The robots create their own pets with technology and the pets are like mechanical dogs. The setting takes places in a house full of robots where they're creations or pets live with them as well with their technology and gadgets to create them. This books just screams kids science fiction with the use of robots, gadgets, and pets that are created by robots!

Twinkle the hedgehog can't get close to anyone because he shocks them. Eventually Nova's father puts him in a cage because of the trouble he causes. Twinkle becomes very sad. Eventually he falls into a deep sleep because his charge is gone. Nova takes the opportunity to change his circuitry so that Twinkle can control his sparks. Now Twinkle is able to cuddle with the other animals without causing a rucus...unless he wants to.
