COLLECTING: WOLVERINE MAX 11-15
Jason Starr is the international bestselling author of many psychological thrillers, including Vanessa's Men, Too Far, Panic Attack, Fantasies, and The Manhattan Trilogy. He also writes original graphic novels, such as the thriller Casual Fling, and comics for Marvel and DC. He lives in New York City.
I read the comic books Wolverine Max #11-15 which focus on Wolverine Max in Las Vegas where he comes across cage fighting, a protagonist called Mother Night and, like so many other Wolverine stories.. vulnerability! Not bad, but like the other volumes, I expected more from a MAX title about Logan. 7 out of 12.
Somehow Jason Starr took a book that had worlds of potential and ran it directly into the ground with just no decent plan on where it should eventually lead to. This was FUCKING TERRIBLE. I thought it would at least build to something fun, but a stupid ass ending makes me regret putting any time in reading this. It even tries to connect to Punisher MAX but isn’t even willing to commit in a meaningful way. This was terrible and you should skip it if you ever come across it. Absolute shit book.
It starts off with Wolverine in vegas fighting cage matches and with the driver Sean but when he meets this woman who goes by MOTHER NIGHT and well she is a hypnotist and uses him for her own needs and Logan is having memory details and when he learns of her, what will he do next and what other secrets is she harboring? Its a cool short story and its a fun villain intro and I like how she dominates him and just shows another aspect of weakness for Logan in Hypnotism.
Next up he travels to Vegas and meets a guy named Micky Gold who is a crime boss and we see their history together and Logan being a killer and all and its a fun story though it gets boring in the middle with too much exposition sometimes it feels like. But then when the cage match starts its a great battle and the art is dark.
Hints of Punisher but not future volume is a boring set-up.
I kinda like how this volume feels different from 616 and really expands on Logan's messed up history and life and overall this run was okay-ish and does live up to its title of MAX though it would have been better if it was a long run but nonetheless.
I’m a big fan of this Wolverine MAX series! And of how Wolverine is portrayed in this series. This is how he should be, feral, aggressive, no holds barred. The Wolverine in this story isn’t afraid to spill some blood. And what would Wolverine be without a little memory loss. The memory loss here is caused by a plane crash.
This story takes him from Tokyo to Los Angeles, to Las Vegas. And is one crazy voyage without any certainty of who he his or who he can trust. It kind of reminded me of Memento (the Christopher Nolan film) in that aspect. The beginning of this volume made me think of the first X-Men movie. I mean Wolverine fighting in a cage for money… Sounds familiar don’t it.
Each volume of this story introduced new characters how seemed to know more about Wolverine than himself. It’s written in a way that we go through it all with Wolverine. The reader knows just as much or should I say just as little as he does. The reader has the same questions and I felt his frustration.
As far as the art goes, it really fitted the story well. It’s a MAX series, so you can expect violence even gore, sex and the use of profanity. All fine by me. I enjoy the MAX and the Marvel Knights stories, because of their darker and more mature approach to the characters and stories.
If you’re a Wolverine fan check this one out. If you’re just looking to read a Wolverine story. This reads well as a standalone story outside of the main Marvel continuity.
A great read, filled with mystery, interesting characters and a noir-ish feel to it.
This was my least favorite of the Wolverine MAX volumes. This is the "conclusion" of the series, but really, it just left me confused. I don't think the lingering questions we had were truly cleared up, and the very end was just...weird. (Although it was pretty original.)
There was a mention of the Punisher, which I thought was awesome, but not enough was said about his connection to everything. The art wasn't bad, but the story just didn't do it for me.
I'm assuming if you read the other two volumes you'll want to read this one, and maybe you should just for the last page. Otherwise, you won't be missing much here.
The Wolverine Max series is set in a different universe than the typical wolverine that most of us are used to. This Logan has a completely different back story and he doesn't remember most of it. The tire 3 trade run is about him trying to figure out his past and spoilers: he never learns anything except that he used to be a really shitty person but now he doesn't want to be. The Logan I fell in love with is an antihero loner. He's angry and tragic but he's also a genuinely good person who makes the decisions he does because he truly believes he's doing the right thing. Max Wolverine is not a good person at all and while it's a decent story it was hard for me to keep this shitty wolverine seperate from the one I fell in love with despite his decision to be a good human being in the end. They are quick reads but don't expect to be blown away.

I wrote a bit about my feelings of this series on my review of the first. It is this book where it gets difficult to suspend my disbelief (at least the Marvel Universe). I tried, I really tried, to take this story on its own and compartmentalize everything I know about Wolverine. The climax completely lost me. I can't honestly say how influenced I was by Marvel proper, so I have to at least admit the possibility that it would make sense to a complete new comer. But it made no sense to me.
Sadly the landing doesn't stick as well as I would like it to in this book, however it is definitely a step up from LA. The "hero's journey" metaphor down the road is a bit heavy-handed, however it encourages some thought. Having his powers being his healing factor, and not his claws is a creative twist. Having his healing factor directly contrast with his claws in the last moments of the book is something I have never seen before this book. It reminds me of the last season of Sons of Anarchy.

Hope there is going ribbed more can't get enuff of this wolverine relly hoped we would see some other max characters like dead pool or punisher but it was still great on its own
Jason Starr brings his Wolverine Max series to an end with this volume. I loved it. Wolverine is Las Vegas still trying to figure out his past. He's living in trailer park fighting in cages, just like he should be doing. People are messing with head and making him do things he doesn't want too. Mother Night is taking advantage of him and something has to be done. Wolverine is going to fix the problem, but that could lead to even more problems.
The one problem with the series is that it's over. I want to know what happens next in the max series. Starr ended it in a good spot, but I feel the next chapter would be even more interesting than we've seen yet.
Not sure why all the hate? The story lines not bad the only thing I would say is even tho its a max comic wolverines a little to ruthless. I've always loved wolverine since a kid my favourite marvel character. But I never remember him being a lunatic where he kills people who beg for there life's, I think the writer needs to do a little more research. Also the ending to this volume was pretty poor I expected more. But overall its wolverine MAX and I did enjoy most of it so looking forward to the next volume.
