About the author
James Oliver Curwood
982 books123 followersBorn in Owosso, Michigan he left high school without graduating but was able to pass the entrance exams to the University of Michigan where he studied journalism. In 1900, Curwood sold his first story while working for the Detroit News-Tribune. By 1909 he had saved enough money to travel to the Canadian northwest, a trip that provided the inspiration for his wilderness adventure stories. The success of his novels afforded him the opportunity to return to the Yukon and Alaska for several months each year that allowed him to write more than thirty such books.
By 1922, Curwood's writings had made him a very wealthy man and he fulfilled a childhood fantasy by building Curwood Castle in Owosso. Constructed in the style of an 18th century French chateau, the estate overlooked the Shiawassee River. In one of the home's two large turrets, Curwood set up his writing studio. Curwood also owned a camp in a remote area in Baraga County, Michigan, near the Huron Mountains.
An advocate of environmentalism, Curwood was appointed to the Michigan Conservation Commission in 1926. The following year, while on a Florida fishing trip, Curwood was bitten on the thigh by what was believed to have been a spider and had an immediate allergic reaction. Health problems related to the bite escalated over the next few months and infection set in that led to his death from blood poisoning.
Interred in the Oak Hill Cemetery in Owosso, his Curwood Castle is now a museum. During the first full weekend in June of each year, the city of Owosso holds the Curwood Festival to celebrate the city's heritage . Also in his honor, a mountain in L'Anse Township, Michigan was given the name Mount Curwood, and the L'Anse Township Park was renamed Curwood Park.

June 10, 245pm ~~ I have had a list of titles by James Oliver Curwood waiting for me for a few years now, so this month of June I thought I would count him as the selection for my Literary Birthday author and finally get a start on reading his list.
When I choose to read more than one title by an author I like to read in publication order and the first one I chose by Curwood nearly ruined my plans. I didn't like it, didn't even finish it. One strike. Two left before I changed my mind about Curwood. So I went on to the next title, The Wolf Hunters.
And boy howdy, Curwood certainly redeemed himself with this story about two school chums and the adventures they had in the Canadian north woods. So much so that I have already started reading the sequel, I couldn't wait to find out what happened after the final chapter here!
This is a story of two friends, Roderick, known as Rod and Wabigoon, called Wabi. They met at school in the USA and became friends, planning a visit to Wabi's home up in Canada at the end of the school year. We don't learn this (or the other important background factors in the story) until the second chapter because we are way too busy running from a pack of hungry wolves when the story begins.
But the fact is, there are thirty-year old grudges that affect not only our two heroes but the lives of everyone in the territory, especially Wabi's sister Minnetaki. How will our young men handle the challenges ahead of them? Both close to twenty years old, they are already mature for their ages, but will they be ready for the leaps into true maturity that will likely be waiting for them when they take to the woods for two months of fur trapping and wilderness living? Blizzards, injuries, hunting, Someone Out There stalking them.....what excitement!
This seems to have been Curwood's second book and I am glad he went into the wild for it. He has a way of putting the reader right there in the middle of the action. You can see the snow sparkling everywhere, you can hear the wolves, see the tracks of animals and taste the caribou steak at the end of long days out in Nature. I very much liked the character of Mukoki, an older man who has been a lifelong companion to Wabi's family and guides them on their trek into the wilderness. In less talented (or respectful) hands he might have become a caricature, but with Curwood he was the perfect wilderness authority.
And there was a Mukoki in real life. Here is the author's dedication for this book:
To my comrades of the great northern wilderness, those faithful companions with whom I have shared the joys and hardships of the "long silent trail," and especially to Mukoki, my red guide and beloved friend, does the writer gratefully dedicate this volume.
Now, that is enough of this book. I have to get back to The Gold Hunters because Minnetaki has been kidnapped!

James Oliver Curwoodin "Sudenpyytäjät" (WSOY, 1957) on oleellinen osa lapsuuttani. Lieneekö kirja ollut isäni vai jonkun hänen sisaruksistaan, mutta mummolan vintiltä sen joka tapauksessa aikanaan löysin ja ihastuin ikihyviksi jännittävään nuorten seikkailuromaaniin.
"Sudenpyytäjät" kertoo amerikkalaisesta nuorukaisesta, joka lähtee seikkailemaan Kanadan erämaihin kahden intiaaniystävänsä kanssa. Susien ja muiden villieläimien metsästämisen lisäksi kolmikko joutuu tekemisiin vihamielisten vunga-intiaanien kanssa sekä törmää vanhassa hirsimökissä luurankoihin, jotka johtavat nämä kulta-aarteen jäljille.
Nykylukijoihin kirja ei välttämättä iske ihan samalla teholla, sen verran vanhahtavaa teksti on, mutta olisihan tätä mielenkiintoista kokeilla joskus vinkkauksessa. Nopealukuisessa romaanissa jännittäviä tapahtumia kuitenkin riittää, eli siihen homma tuskin tökkäisi.
Curwoodin henkilöhahmot ovat aikakauden nuortenkirjallisuudelle tyypillisesti kirkasotsaisia ja nuhteettomia sankareita. Luontokuvaukset ovat ihan komeita (olkoonkin, että sutta kuvataan petona eikä minään muuna kuin petona), mutta mielenkiintoisesti esille nousi myös kirjan ns. Viisikko-ulottuvuus. Päähenkilöt nimittäin syövät usein ja herkullisesti, ja lukiessa alkoi tehdä pariinkin otteeseen mehevää riistapaistia.
Lapsena minua harmitti aina suunnattomasti, etten koskaan saanut käsiini kirjan jatko-osaa. Nyt siihenkin on sitten tilaisuus, eli pääsen palaamaan Kanadan erämaihin lähes kolmenkymmenen vuoden viiveellä. Katsotaan miten sankareiden käy!

I nearly stopped the book in the beginning not wanting to read about guys killing wolves. I'm glad I didnt. It was a story about 2 school mates that go out to trap wolves for their skins during a school break. It takes place in 1908. It describes in vivid detail the cold conditions of their trip.
They run into a variety of problems while on this money making trip. These boys must have been in their mid teens and it tells of friendship between a white boy from Detroit,Michigan and his red Indian friend. There is al elder Indian that goes along with them once they get to the post where Wabi lives.
There is a hint of possible romance and danger with wild animals stalking them, there is a search for 'gold' as well as a grizzly discoverly of dead bodies found frozen in a deserted cabin.
I enjoyed this book immensley. There is no real storyline or plot - just a tale of their adventures.

It takes place in Canada in the early 1900's. The story of an American boy who has become friends with a Native American boy. He travels to Canada to hunt and trap with his friend in hopes that he can earn money to help his mother. The boys and an Indian guide spend several months in a remote cabin during a harsh winter always on the lookout for an unfriendly, neighboring tribe. Wonderful descriptions of nature and life in the wilderness make this an enjoyable read. What they discovered in an abandoned cabin is an incentive for further adventure. The author leaves the story open to a sequel. Those who like Jack London will enjoy this book.

I enjoy just about anything James Oliver Curwood writes. The book is dated and would give PETA a heart attack for gun violence, and the hunting and trapping of animals. It was written in 1908 I believe , a different time and place.

Я, видимо, из того поколения, которое росло на приключенческих книжках. Поэтому когда в руки попалась история мной не читаная, то я же кинулась туда с головой. А там и индейцы (ну, многим как говориться вспомнить трудно, потому что они не знают, но в моем детстве самым прекрасным индейцем на всем свете был Гойко Митич, до сих пор трудно отделаться от него, как от образчика этой нации))) ), там волки, там охота, там белый мальчик, который влюбляется в прекрасную индейскую девушку. Там поиски сокровищ! В общем все то, что мной читалось в детстве, только тут белые и индейцы еще дружат, а не режут друг друга как скот, причем первые с большим ожесточением, чем вторые, хотя вторые были вправе защищать свою землю. Но тут другая история. Она о юношах, которые зарабатывают деньги и пытаются содержать семью. И судя по тому, что автор часто говорит "мальчики" - это их взросление.
Мне нравятся такие истории. Они достаточно просты и в тоже время наполнены идеями, решениями, историей. Я до сих пор не могу представить себе, что лес может быть настолько полон зверья, а они от людей, отошли-то на день пути. То есть предстает перед нами красивый дикий и не пуганный край. И дружба мальчишек, трогательно, красиво, чисто. Я очень люблю книги про дружбу. Когда я вижу сдруживание, понимание, как они узнают, переживают, страдают в расставании, не просто шапочное знакомство, которое теперь называют дружбой, нет. Когда у реальность у вас общая и общаться вы можете без утайки, даже о своей вспыхнувшей любви к сестре друга и найти понимание и поддержку, и эмоционально вы сплетаетесь, чувствуете настроение. Не приятельство - встретил, попользовал, предал и забыл, а именно дружба. Тут это было и это было красиво!
И старый индеец был хорош. Со своей историей, со своей жизнью. Как дух, все видит, все знает, все чувствует. Может и посмеяться и ободрить и пропасть таинственно. И даже у волка своя судьба, история и все это привлекает, меня даже немного чарует. В данном случае так, что я решила читать продолжение.
Я кратко пробегусь о чем книга. То что она о дружбе - это уже понятно) Но это все происходит в красивейших декорациях лесов Канады, когда индейцам головы не рубили, но все же было племя, которое против и оно на поселения нападало, причем насколько я поняла поселения были смешанные, то есть там жили и индейцы и приехавший из-за океана народ. И судя по всему, волки сильно досаждали уютненьким фортам, поэтому было объявлено вознаграждение за скальпы этих животных, но можно было деньги раздобыть и притащив прекрасные рога лося или же шкурку чернобурки. И вот два приятеля, старый индеец и дрессированный волк, отправляются на охоту. Ну, вы понимаете, без встреч с враждебным племенем не обошлось, без встреч со стаей волков тоже. Были и ранения и неожиданные находки. И все это написано интересно, я проглотила книжку и облизнулась)
Советовать я пожалуй такое могу только любителям приключений, ну и мальчишкам одиннадцати лет, почему-то мне кажется, что в одиннадцать такое еще интересно и познавательно может быть. А всем остальным это может не понравится, а причины уж могут быть самые разнообразные, порой такие, о каких я и подумать не могла. Ну, меня до сих пор не отпускает то, что на Дракона Шварца возмущались, что герои как-то не так говорят!!! Как такое представить-то можно умной головой?))) А любителям - читать, вас эта история порадует)

Podróż po białych pustyniach północy, czyli o książce, która pachnie śniegiem, wilczym futrem i dymem z ogniska
Nie każda książka potrafi wciągnąć mnie tak, bym podczas czytania naprawdę czuła chłód śniegu pod stopami i słyszała wycie wilków gdzieś w oddali. „Łowcy wilków” Curwooda to właśnie taka opowieść – nie tylko do przeczytania, ale do przeżycia.
Ta książka z pozoru wygląda jak klasyczna przygodówka – trochę tropienia, trochę strzelania, ucieczki, pościgi, ślady na śniegu… Ale wystarczy kilka stron, by zrozumieć, że to coś więcej. Curwood nie prowadzi nas tylko przez fabułę – on wrzuca nas w sam środek kanadyjskiej zimy i mówi: radź sobie. I jakoś sobie radzimy, razem z bohaterami – Rodem, Wabim i Mukokim – bo z nimi można iść w ciemność.
Trzy wątki, które się tu splatają – polowanie na wilki, poszukiwanie złota i konflikt z plemieniem Woongów – tworzą narracyjną pajęczynę, w której każda nitka trzyma emocje na granicy. Ale to nie akcja najbardziej mnie wciągnęła. To klimat. Ta dzikość przyrody, która nie jest tylko tłem, ale pełnoprawnym bohaterem. Tu lasy mają swój rytm, śnieg swój głos, a cisza – swoją grozę.
Największym skarbem tej książki są jednak postaci. Rod – młody chłopak z przeszłością, która boli bardziej niż mróz. Wabi – cichy, dumny Indianin, dla którego nieujarzmiona natura to nie wróg, a sojusznik. Mukoki – milczący strażnik wspomnień i tajemnic, którego obecność mówi więcej niż dialogi. Każdy z nich wnosi coś więcej niż tylko „działanie” – to emocje, lojalność, zaufanie i ta trudna do opisania więź, która rodzi się tylko w ekstremalnych warunkach.
I jest jeszcze Wolf. Choć to wilk – nie jest on tylko zwierzęciem, ale niemal człowiekiem z własną historią, bólem, lojalnością. Zaskoczyło mnie, jak bardzo można się było przywiązać do czworonożnej postaci, która mówiła do nas tylko własnym spojrzeniem.
Curwood pisze prosto, ale z jakąś niezwykłą wrażliwością. Każdy opis – świerkowych borów, zamarzniętych jezior, śladów na śniegu – buduje atmosferę tak gęstą, że można się nią otulić (albo udusić, zależnie od sceny). Szczególnie mocno zapamiętałam początek – „Mroźna zima zaległa w kanadyjskiej głuszy” – tak prosty, a tak skuteczny w wbiciu nas w ten świat bez światła i ciepła.
Mam też swoje małe żale – chciałabym, żeby Minnetaki, siostra Wabiego, miała więcej przestrzeni w tej historii. Jest silna, intrygująca, ale zepchnięta na dalszy plan. Liczę, że kolejna część da jej więcej głosu. Bo ten świat aż prosi się o bohaterkę, która potrafi patrzeć wilkom w oczy bez strachu.
„Łowcy wilków” to książka, która przypomina, że przygoda to nie zawsze pogoń za skarbem. Czasem największą przygodą jest po prostu przeżyć dzień w miejscu, gdzie wszystko – wiatr, głód, samotność – sprawdza, kim naprawdę jesteś. A jeśli masz szczęście, odnajdziesz nie tylko złoto, ale i siebie.
Polecam ją każdemu, kto czasem tęskni za dzikością. Za światem, w którym przyjaźń znaczy więcej niż słowa, a zima nie wybacza błędów. Jeśli chcesz się przekonać, jak pachnie prawdziwa przygoda – sięgnij po „Łowców wilków”. Może nie wrócisz stamtąd taki sam.

Główny bohater tej książki jest półkrwi Indianinem - jego ojciec był Anglikiem, a matka Indianką. Wabi sporo cech odziedziczył po indiańskich przodkach, więc kiedy postanowiono wysłać go na studia, nie był tym zachwycony, wolał wędrować niż wkuwać regułki. Wyjazd nie był jednak bezowocny, bo Wabi w mieście poznał przyjaciela, Rodericka Drew, z którym postanowił wyruszyć na północ, żeby zarobić na polowaniach na wilki. Razem z nimi wyrusza również stary, doświadczony w polowaniach Indianin Mukoki. Tak rozpoczyna się pełna przygód i niespodziewanych atrakcji historia.

O ovom romanu jezično se može reći da je žanrovski ukalupljen i ograničen. Neaktualizirani, nemaštoviti, neumjetnički jezik. Na razini dijaloga iz Zagora.
Sadržajno se radi o vesternu pa je i u tom smislu spona sa Zagorom. Inače, meni su Zagor i Chico bili otac i majka, odrastao sam praktički u Darkwoodu, iako sam dio djetinstva proveo i u Macondu.
Usput rečeno, ako ovo čita načelnik Maconda zamolio bih ga ovim putem ako mi može srediti nešto. Već sam mu prije pričao o mojoj štali, ako bi ju mogao katastarski izmijeniti u građevno zemljište....
Radnja prati trojicu lovaca, jednog bijelca te dvojicu Indijanaca, odnosno jednog poluindijanca i drugog čistokrvnog Indijanca.
Dosadno.
Ljubavni sloj romana je na razini "Melite" J.E. Tomića ili "Propalih dvora" J. Leskovara.

March 4, 2022Ta książka opowiadająca o młodych łowcach i starym Indianinie jest świetnym przykładem awanturniczej powieści przygodowej. Mamy tu wszystko czego oczekuję od tego typu literatury: świetne opisy zimowej, malowniczej kanady, opisy przyrody, zwierząt i ich zwyczajów, zachowań, no i oczywiście ciągła akcja! Trudno się nudzić podczas takiej lektury. Dodatkowo mamy tutaj świetnie ukazaną przyjaźń i odwagę bohaterów którzy wzajemnie sobie pomagają.
Takie książki są świetne na luźne czytanie, nie ma w niej dużej głębi a po prostu czyta się świetnie i szybko. Przyjemna, nostalgiczna podróż która rozbudza cząstkę poszukiwacza przygód z dzieciństwa jakim był każdy z nas, serdecznie polecam!

Although full of hunting and killing, this book has a such a nice vibe. Decriptions of nature and adventures are stunning and the friendships are beautiful. Warmly recommended.

Great Adventure Story
Despite its brevity, this book is an epic adventure of the wild. The plot is a bit scattered and much is left open-ended (although the sequel "The Gold Hunters" picks up moments after this story ends), but the description of the landscape is vivid and the characters are sympathetic. It suffers slightly from the ignorance of the era with regards to Native Americans but is never racist. A great read that's tons 'O fun.

Una novela de aventuras de James Oliver Curwood, a quien conocí gracias a Kazán (y a mi padre, que me regaló las obras completas). En las grandes planicies nevadas del norte de Canadá, un joven cazador de lobos se enfrenta a mil y una aventuras. Sería una del oeste salvo por el gran papel que representa la hostil y majestuosa naturaleza en la novela. Muy entretenida.

I have collected and am reading all of James Oliver Curwood's books. I love reading books written in the 1800's and early 1900's. The writing is so different than now. Curwood does a fantastic job of describing the time period in which he lived and wrote.
The story is great, the characters believable and the honor and loyalty in friendships are real and valued. I love outdoor adventure books and Curwood is one of the best!

This book should be much better known. Is it because it's by a Canadian author, about adventure in the Canadian wilderness, that it is so obscure? (At least to me.) This belongs alongside Huckleberry Finn, Tom Sawyer, and Treasure Island for adventures appealing to an audience of young men/boys.

Od srca preporučujem mlađim naraštajima. Ipak delo ocenjujem sa tri zvezdice jer ne mogu da izbegnem poređenje sa brojnim delima Džeka Londona koji je temu Aljaske, preživljavanja u njenim surovim predelima i zlatnu groznicu opisao mnogo bolje u svojim brojnim romanima i pripovetkama.
