Great for beginner fish keepers. Covers the basics of fresh and salt water. Has a surprising amount of detail, but is written in a really easy to understand way. Great advice on tank sizes and makes sure to mention the ethical issues with some aspects of marine fish.

Knocked off a star because it overcomplicated some bits and under-asked for others. It insists that the best way to manage a fresh water tank is to use RO water, which a) is a big expense for a beginner and b) is likely unnecessary when most fish shops use tap water - you'd shock the fish and then be forced to upkeep the new high level of effort to maintain it.

Plus is says that changing your water every other week is acceptable as a blanket statement. That is highly dependent on your stocking, number of plants and strength of filtration. That's a quick way to kill the fish it's asked you to buy an RO machine for.

Overall a solid 4 star book. Glad I got it.

Although some concepts are a bit out of date, it’s still a great book for beginners with lots of information written down in a very clear and straight-to-the-point way.

I'll probably be "currently reading" this for a while!

I bought it at PetsAtHome and so far with the book's help I've set up my tank; am learning about water chemical things like ammonia, nitrates, nitrites, etc.; and how to look after fish properly. Everything's explained really well and there are also lots of pictures and photos to illustrate.

Am hoping to get my fish this week and find the book's section on the different fish is very informative. It covers tropical and coldwater fish and it's great that to learn how big a tiny baby goldfish can get; which fish go well together in a tank; and so on.

Am sure I'll be referring back to the book often. Fingers crossed I won't need the section on fish illnesses! (One can but dream...)
