in Sanity, AZ

Rate this book
Welcome to Sanity, Arizona. It's a small town where everyone knows everyone and the natives are happy to live and let live...unless you're visiting. Forged in the fires of segregation, the descendants of an overrun insane asylum years before have carved out a place for themselves in the middle of the Mojave Desert. It's a small place with a single road and only a few buildings to speak of, out in the middle of nowhere. The residents have developed their own systems of law, politics, ethics, religion, and morality. Left on their own, Sanity would thrive outside the view of our world, content to live their lives in their own way. Unfortunately for all involved strangers do occasionally find themselves in Sanity, AZ.

"Some of the brightest talent I've seen in a long time, coming together to make something special. Exactly the kind of book the world needs." -Josh Fialkov, writer Echoes, I, Vampire, Alpha

"James Ninness is clever and funny. It just makes sense to support his work so that in Sanity, AZ can be unleashed upon an unsuspecting world." -Eric Shanower, writer/artist Age of Bronze, Marvel's OZ series

“in Sanity, AZ promises to bring a unique, bold and fresh perspective to the horror genre, from up and coming indie-comic talents with a wealth of imagination and experiences to draw from.” –Joel Gomez, artist Flashpoint: Reverse Flash, Detective Comics

"James Ninness, Joe Pezzula, Michael Drace Fountain, Marcel Losada and their team have spearheaded an eerie anthology which should appeal to fans of modern horror. This brand of macabre fills the void which is largely absent in spandex filled #comicmarket, and should be supported not only for its unique voice, but overall quality. Great efforts from a roster of fresh faces, I wonder who will become a household name creator first…" -Jimmy Jay, retailer/convention organizer Jay Co. Comics, Amazing Arizona Comic Con

"in Sanity, AZ is a gold mine for indie comics lovers! A killer anthology concept with a creator list that reads like a Who's Who of up and coming comic book talent. I am genuinely psyched to see these stories come together!" -Chris Ryder, writer/creator Dames in the Atomic Age

"These guys are f#@%ing rad. Holy s*!t! Give them your money right now." -Tony Fleecs, cover artist My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic

"I love my son very much. I don't like this book." -Michele Ninness, James Ninness's mother

This horror anthology is brilliant. I could feel my skin crawling (or should I say my leather) as I read it. My terror only multiplied as I reached the end and realized it was going to end soon.

The writing is fantastic, bringing the deranged residents of Sanity, AZ into the light, warts and all. There is a true sense of danger, a flicking of the lizard-brain in all of us as you read through these short tales. And short they are, most of them are only a page or two. The truly amazing thing is how the writers are able to tell a fully realized tale in such a short space.

The tales themselves weave and duck back and forth in time, showing us the history of the town, without taking us out of the overall narrative. And there is an over-arching tale being told here. A story about acceptance and the dangers to society presented by zealots and our own power structure. It is truly an accomplishment to have all these separate, unique tales, full of colorful characters, come together to tell one story. As a writer, it makes me a little envious of their talent.

Of course, they'd be nowhere without the amazing art. Each story has been paired with the artist that best facilitates the story. At once beautiful and repulsive, there are more talents at work in this anthology than I could list without being obnoxious. Just go buy the book and marvel at the collaboration.

If I had to pick favorites among the stories, I'd go with the following, in no particular order: "Ham Tickle", "Confusion", "Broken Water I,II,and II", and "False Witness."

I look forward to more from all of these writers, which brings me to my one complaint: I wish this was an ongoing series.

I got to check out the sneak peak and DAMN...it's a great graphic novel. Awesome story compilation by all 4 writers, and the variety of art just kills.

Being a horror anthology of related stories, about a certain place, from a ton of different creators... the schizophrenia of stories and styles and everything really lends to the overall fun of this book.

I picked this up at Amazing Arizona Con, it was worth it. I always enjoy picking up books in person and able to talk to the people who worked on it. It was definitely a weird story, which is exactly what they were going for. This was the first time I read a book that jumped from writer to writer and and artist to artist. They did do well to keep the characters at least looking the same to make it easier to follow, but still keeping the style of that artist. I enjoyed the book as a whole, I really enjoyed the strangeness of the characters. If you get a chance to read it I would highly suggest it, at least talk to them in person about it, they have such passion for their work.

I thought this graphic novel horror anthology was excellent, and utterly disturbing. The array of artwork was absolutely phenomenal. The overall storyline for the anthology was extremely interesting and I liked seeing the different stories and versions of characters by the different illustrators/artists.
