I'll start by saying I have some problems with this book that began with the cover and probably colored my reading of it. The book has "Orrin Woodward" in large letters on the front cover and in small print above "forward by New York Times bestselling author". No where in or on this book is the actual author listed. It's authored by "Life Leadership" ?? Umm...okay. I can't understand the motivation for this, but have read other books by Life Leadership, and there is some value in them.
This was a somewhat simple book. Lots of short (page and a half) chapters with leadership principles. It was the next book in the Mentoring in the Classics series by the DeMilles of Tjed.org. I've read a lot of Oliver DeMille's work and listened to probably 100 of his lectures/teachings and strongly suspect he was the primary author of this book. Much of what was contained here was a repeat of that content: whether he's inspired by this book or wrote it, it wasn't anything life changing for me.
However, simple, not complex is one of the principles in this book, so maybe the author is practicing what s/he preaches. A reminder of fundamental principles is valuable, I guess.
The other struggle I had with this book was the emphasis it placed on being a professional mentor...maybe that's a good way to say it? While prayer and following God's leading is mentioned about a dozen times in this book, there were segments that talked about the finite time that mentors have and choosing your mentees carefully to get the most bang for your buck, so to speak. Those are accurate truths. No one person can do everything, but my Scriptures show a leader who took on a rag-tag bunch of twelve who, by all accounts, didn't have much going for them, and He sowed into them because He saw something the world didn't, because each person has innate value as an image bearer of the Most High. It left me feeling pretty turned off about this book, because sometimes the biggest difference we'll make in a person's life won't be in the ones who go and make the biggest impact in the world, but it still matters.
Perhaps that's a big part of why this book largely fell flat for me: my main mentoring role is as a parent. I don't choose whether to invest deeply in my kids' lives based on how hard they'll work to earn my mentorship. I do it because it matters deeply because of who they are. Maybe I'm not the intended audience.
You'll find nuggets in this book, but if you, like me, are mentoring students, children, grandchildren, etc I'd recommend The Student Whisperer instead of this book.
Honestly, I found it kind of Meh. It kind of felt that there was a lot of randomness in the different tips, and that after it was all said and done, I wasn't sure WHAT specific steps to take. Alright, but not awesome.
A good book for those who enter into any kind of 'sharing of life with another'. Helpful for those who are goal orientated. Th beginning of the book is better than its second half where it seems to lose steam. Good one to have in your leadership arsenal.
Perhaps because I've coached people in the past, the early parts of the book were a review of what I already knew. However, about midway through it, I began to really enjoy it and highlight many places.
This is a must read for anyone who is aspiring to be, or currently is, any of the following:
Leader/leadership ( any of the 5 levels, although ideally Level 2 or above )
Coach ( Life, Christian life, wellness, et al )
Teacher ( school of any type )
Parent
non profit organization
It is filled with so many tidbits, tips, insight, quotes, workshops to apply, and anecdotes that you easily get your investment ($ spent) back within the first 1/4 of the 260 pages, let alone reading cover to cover. It's beyond obvious why this is considered part of the "essentials series". Best of the day to all!
I found this to be an amazing book. A big key to my journey of growth is mentoring. This book teaches not only how to be a good mentor but how to be mentored. You could almost read this and learn how to mentor your growth on your own, although it's highly recommended you have a real mentor. If you're in any sort of leadership position or desire some personal/leadership growth this is a great book to read and re-read.
This is a laser focused tool that could have used 22 years ago as a tool for leading members of United States Military! I have already been applying what I have learned in my unit and teaching the principals during enhancement seminars. This is a book that every leader should read and apply!!! Now available as an eBook at http://www.life-leadership-home.com/S... Thanks to the amazing work of the LIFE Leadership Team!!!
Good guide for beginning mentors and students seeking self-analysis. Covers a broad range of mentoring topics, and most importantly, encourages action. Helpful parenting applications. However, it has the feel of a book written too quickly with some awkward sentence structure.
Every leader and aspiring leader needs the information in this book. It's one of the most boiled down straight shooting books on mentoring and success that I've read. Highly recommend!!
Full of good ideas on mentoring but poorly written. The mentoring ideas are broke out into 77 keys so it will work well as a reference book going forward.
This book had many good ideas that were easily separated for quick applicability. A really good read for anyone, from the novice to the more experienced, that will provide tools to add to the toolkit of leadership.
