He made his professional debut in 1967 with Meakashi Polikichi, but is best known for creating Cutie Honey, Devilman, and Mazinger Z in the 1970s. In 2005, he became a Character Design professor at the Osaka University of Arts. Since 2009, he is a member of Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize's nominating committee.

La guerra inizia con lo scontro con Sirene e altri demoni minori.
Belle sequenze d'azione, con una angoscia che aumenta di continuo e la sensazione che tutto potrà solo peggiorare. Go Nagai non è granché come disegnatore, ma come narratore è bravo e nel complesso il suo tratto grezzo e marcato è d'effetto per una storia cupa come questa.
4 stelle meritate.

Better than the first volume because this is mainly one giant action sequence, and so it doesn't have as much of the bad dialog and forced exposition.

Un volume in cui la trama si porta avanti davvero di poco ma nel complesso superiore al primo, grazie alle tante scene d’azione, i soliti disegni affascinanti, l’atmosfera ancora più cupa del primo volume e meno dialoghi (e quei pochi presenti di qualità leggermente superiore ai precedenti), ciò si traduce in una lettura più scorrevole e piacevole.

Once upon a time, demons invaded the world, wiping out all prehistoric creatures that once ruled the earth. After dominating all life, they ruled the world for many long years until the great ice age froze them in burials of ice deep down in the underworld. After the demons were lost to history, a new race called humans were born, and they became the new rulers of the world. Left undisturbed for thousands of years, the humans were ignorant of the threat of demons lurking just under their feet. In the modern age of technology, industrialization and political turmoil, the demons begin to rise once more, merging with corrupt humans to pollute the world with violence so they may rule once more.
Mankind’s only hope for salvation is to use the demons’ power against them, and only a pure-hearted man like Akira Fudo can do so without losing his humanity. Once, he was little more than a timid crybaby, but Akira now wields the terrible power of a devil, yet holds the innocent soul of a man; he is a Devilman. Akira gets dragged into a dark world of conspiracy, betrayal and bloodshed by his best friend Ryo. Ryo's father was a genius researcher of the occult who left many records and findings informing them of the oncoming demon invasion before he was possessed and took his own life. Now the two friends are the only ones with the power and the knowledge to save the world or lead it to its destruction.
Devilman has quite the legacy. It's very rough around the edges and it definitely shows its age with some stale dialogue, major pacing issues, one dimensional characters who react unrealistically, etc, but all of these things are to be expected since it was written in 1972 around the time when the medium was just beginning to find solid ground and can be considered the grandfather of all modern horror, dark fantasy and mature adult manga in general. It heavily inspired countess classic masterpieces and memorable modern tales such as Berserk, Attack on Titan, Gantz, Neon Genesis Evangalion, Parasyte, Death Note, Tokyo Ghoul, as well as the works of Junji Ito, Naoki Urasawa and Satoshi Kon. Hell, even many non-horror series have drawn inspiration from it such as Yu Yu Hakusho, Inuyasha and Dragon Ball. You could say that Devilman is to manga what Lovecraft is to modern horror.
Though it does struggle to move itself forward at times, the lore behind the demons, the origin of the main character merging with a powerful entity which is used in many modern series and the emotional climactic ending are all fascinating to see. The author also utilizes a lot of real-world literature to set the foundation of the plot and backstory. In the world of Devilman, the events of Dante's Divine Comedy and the Christian Bible are things that actually happened, it also brings in a lot of historical references and events such as the Salem Witch Trials, Black Sabbaths, WWII, race feuds, slavery and colonization. It's one of the first series that created the 'humans can be more cruel, terrifying and monstrous than actual demons, monsters and wild animals' plots that we've seen done thousands of times.
It's definitely a tad corny and poorly written in some places, but it's great to see where many modern storytelling tropes originated from and how it inspired so many of my all-time favorite series. The Netflix adaption Devilman Crybaby is also a very cool modernized retelling of the original story and I honestly prefer it over the manga a bit.

In questo volume assistiamo ai primi sconti tra Devilman ed altri demoni terrificanti: la prima ad attaccare il giovane Ryo è Sirene, l’uccello demoniaco. In questo primo fantastico scontro conosciamo per la prima volta i poteri e la forza del diavolo Amon, particolarmente intelligente a sfruttare a proprio favore i passi falsi del proprio avversario. La parte più interessante, tuttavia, è l’unione sul finale tra Sirene e Kaim, altro demone disposto a sacrificarsi pur di salvare e rendere felice la potente guerriera.
Nella parte finale del volume l’autore sfrutta un altro potente avversario, il diavolo Jinmen, per affrontare temi piuttosto popolari, primo fra tutti la crudeltà dell’uomo, disposto in particolare a sacrificare altre creature viventi per assicurarsi la propria sopravvivenza. Questo delicato argomento è in qualche modo sfruttato per difendere l’operato dei demoni, disposti a sterminare l’intera popolazione umana per poter riappropriarsi del pianeta Terra. Tale conflitto è infine utilizzato anche per sottolineare la superiorità dell’uomo, attualmente in cima alla piramide alimentare e destinato a distruggere il mondo con la sua continua ed esponenziale crescita a causa dell’inesistenza di un vero e proprio “predatore” naturale.

A primo impatto, si potrebbe pensare che la storia pensata da Go Nagai non sia niente di che, eppure non c'è nulla di banale nella sua narrazione, a partire dalle ottime caratterizzazioni dei personaggi: tutti loro, compresi quelli secondari, risultano coerenti sia nei loro ragionamenti che nelle loro azioni. In questo secondo volume il racconto entra un po' più nel vivo, con uno scontro che ho trovato davvero appassionante, nonostante i disegni non mi facciano impazzire.
Essendo cresciuta con manga contemporanei, non riesco ad apprezzare pienamente lo stile di disegno del sensei – e tuttavia durante la lettura questo aspetto passa in secondo piano, perché la scrittura è così coinvolgente da farmene momentaneamente dimenticare.
Volevo concludere questa piccola recensione con un appunto su alcuni dialoghi che ci sono nelle pagine iniziali: certe battute oggi potrebbero far storcere il naso, ma Devilman è un'opera scritta tra il 1972 e il 1973, per cui è naturale che ci siano degli atteggiamenti specchio della società dell'epoca. Non saranno condivisibili, ma comprensibili sì e non guastano in alcun modo l'esperienza di lettura.
Essendo cresciuta con manga contemporanei, non riesco ad apprezzare pienamente lo stile di disegno del sensei – e tuttavia durante la lettura questo aspetto passa in secondo piano, perché la scrittura è così coinvolgente da farmene momentaneamente dimenticare.

Me pareció bastante bien.
Estuvo entretenido ya que mayormente se enfocó en mostrar el poder de Akira ahora Devilman por unirse a Amon y su pelea con Silena que quería derrótelo pero no lo logró.
Se muestra también el personaje de Miki y su familia un poco más, ella no me agrada mucho ya que parece un personaje irrelevante y plano hasta ahora. En comparación a la adaptación de crybaby Miki era más entrañable y tenía relevancia.
Se nos muestra un poco de Ryo ya por el final y como auxilia a Akira en su lucha contra Silene y lo ayuda a recuperarse, demostrando así que al parecer a Ryo le importa el bienestar de Akira y que logre vencer a los demonios.

Questi primi volumi di Devilman hanno il raro pregio di avere una storia che, per quanto rischi di essere banale e superficiale nella sua divertente assurdità, è invece resa interessante e profonda dalla magistrale caratterizzazione psicologica dei personaggi e dalla strabiliante coerenza di scrittura. Un plauso anche ai disegni, apparentemente semplici eppure sapientemente coordinati, la cui età risveglia nostalgia nei confronti di chi è cresciuto con gli anime ispirati alle opere di Go Nagai.
Se si riesce a sorvolare l'occasionale sessismo figlio del suo tempo, ci si immerge in un'opera che riesce perfettamente nel suo intento di dare un divertimento riflessivo.

reading this while watching the anime is a vibe. I'm definitely in the mood for the story as a whole now. the anime is such a perfect adaptation. it omits the unnecessary and outdated aspects of the manga while strengthening what makes the tale shine. excited to continue.

The scenes in the house were very slow and the battles felt childish but the duel with Devilman and Silen was actually exciting. The merging of Silen with Kaim was out of nowhere and her sudden death felt like a 'kill off'. I am still curious as to see where this story goes.
Update 4/9/19- I've thought of lowering this volume's rating many times but it stands at 3 stars for certain. Although the volume is filled with 2 star content in the form of the long fights between Silen and Devilman and some parts of the house scenes with the demon intruders, there is 3 star and 4 star content with Ryo's involvement in the Silen fight, Akira saving Miki, and Silen's death. These 3 star and 4 star content raise the volume's rating to 3 star.

With the adoption of my new rating system, a two star rating is befitting. The original review and rating updates conform to the new rating system. The main reason behind the two star rating is the tone in my original review, characteristic of a two star-rating review. I seemed impressed with the Devilman and Silen fight but not with the slow fights in the house and Silen and Kaim's death. I am not sure if my update from April 9, 2019, was not based on my feelings after having finished the volume and reflecting on the entire series. I feel that at the time of having finished this volume, this was an OK continuation of the series. I will like scenes with Miki and Ryo after finishing the series because they provide me with nostalgia. I recall during my first reading finding Miki too attached to Akira and Ryo to be a strange, faulty character.

I have decided to keep the rating color at yellow with a grey outline. I feel that the majority of the volume is two star-rated, even if buildup is accounted for when considering the buildup in the house needed to enjoy Ryo saving Miki. Furthermore, a volume online contained Silen's battle with Ryo not starting until page 99 and the volume's total length is 185 pages. That means that the majority of the volume is taking place in the home which were my original two star-rated criticisms. Coupling the good, at least three star-rated fight with Silen with the downer ending (the downer ending mentioned in the original review), the volume's good sections are still tainted. The update from August 25, 2019 mentions the tone of the original review as being characteristic of a two star-rating, which further supports the two star-rating.
