This is not a stand alone book, you really should read book 1 first. Trust me, you want to know what's going on.
Book 2. What can I say? Once again CM Johnson has delivered a fabulous and well written read that will keep you turning the pages and speculating on everything. Kerrisha, the Fifth Guardian, is having a horrifying vision that has her screaming in terror and anguish every time she has it. On top of that she must deal with kidnapping/assassination attempts, her upcoming wedding/coronation/blood bonding rituals, and make her self as accessible as possible to the people to whom she is about to be queen. As her powers get stronger and new ones emerge, she must also continue to train her betrothed Kerreth to fight with weapons as well as with the power that he is steadily gaining. Keeping everyone around her safe has become an all consuming task for Kerrisha, one that she knows that she will ultimately fail at, but she will keep them safe for as long as she can.
I cannot express how much I love these books. Kerrisha is a strong heroine and is honestly a great role model for teenagers and women alike because she is a self rescuing princess. She strives to to right by herself and those around her while not totally depending on Kerreth or the Tesha to save her or keep her safe. The subject matter can get heavy at times, and from what I hear will get heavier but a mature teenager could definitely read these.
This book was well written, the characters have continued to develop a richness and depth that is rarely seen in today's standard novel, and the storyline is so artistically woven that you don't mind the fact that sometimes you have more questions than answers. I admit, I read this book slowly, I had the chance to savor it, to enjoy a relatively "quiet" period in the lives of these characters. That being said, there is plenty of action as well as intrigue, romance, and some amusing parts as well. I'm not sure what I would compare these books to, I think the closest (that I have read) might be Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time series. The amount of plot, convoluted storyline, and character development is roughly the same, without having to wait years in between books like the WoT series.
I recommend this entire series to anyone who likes a modern sci-fi/fantasy type novel. if you'd like to know what life might be like if the people of Atlantis had survived and were thriving in the modern world, then read these books. You will not be disappointed.
