Author of biographies of Charles Dickens and Sir Walter Scott. Professor Johnson wrote seven other books, including two novels and a 1945 anthology, A Treasury of Satire. Husband of Eleanor Kraus, who co-wrote with him The Dickens Theatrical Reader. He died at the age of 93.
It is a wonderful book. It is such a well-researched biography complete with notes and bibliography--a great study of Charles Dickens' life, writings and personality. He was, in fact, a much different person than the man I imagined after seeing movies made of his famous books. I like the real man better and He was fascinating--with that genius, driven personality. He must have been a fun person to know. I am now anxious to read Volume II of this biography as well as more of his writings.
