New Shadows Stalkers story, new couple, explosion, taking the heat, running from authority and a cartel, getting busy in the sheets, arguing... And only three days to fix everything.
Brian & Layla aren't 100% new: there was a tiny part in Razor's Edge with them, though Layla was only mentioned as the cause of Brian's heartache. Five years worth of heartache.
After all the romance stories that have made it to my Read shelf, I can safely say I really love the second-chance romances. Maybe it's the added drama, or that I'd like to believe if people screw a good thing once, that it isn't beyond repair, or perhaps to believe people get wiser in time, and don't keep making stupid mistakes. Whichever it is. What's important is that I like it.
Layla and Brian had had five years to regret their separation, which is five years too long, but humans have a tendency to say stupid things instead of being open when it's most needed, and fictional people aren't exempt. But after five years of loneliness and heartache Brian and Layla crossed paths again, and pretty quickly reignited their passion. And that time around Brian was far from willing to let Layla walk out of his life. Once was more than enough.
While Razor's Edge didn't have a story line concerning the hero's job as a Shadow Stalker, Taking the Heat did. That was what actually brought them back in each other's lives: Brian was sent to protect Layla who had been in the Witness Protection Program the past two years, and supposed to testify in a trial in only few days time, something the accused one's weren't willing to let happen. While Brian trying to get Layla safely to her destination is a big part of the plot, the major focus is really on the romance: Brian & Layla step by hot, dirty, sweaty step getting to their happy ending. Personally, I prefer it this way. If only he hadn't kept calling her baby, I would have liked it even more. When you're in need of something steamy, and on the shorter side, this could do the trick. Or if you're like me recovering from The Fault in Our Stars.

Usually, I don't do novellas because the story and the characters are mostly undeveloped and I felt unsatisfied after reading. But this was not the case. Even though the story was short it felt surprisingly complete.
Due to the past relationship between Layla and Brian and the fact that they still love each other the story felt like not lacking anything and the emotions between the hero and heroine were right. The characters are nicely constructed as for such a short text, they have personalities and deepness. And I loved how Layla is calling him Bri, I find it sweet. In general, I would call it a sweet story despite the lots of sex they have. I wish it was made into a full-length book.

Brian is a US Marshall tasked with protecting a witness while transporting her across the country to testify. Layla is that witness. It turns out they have a history together. First loves, they broke-up (but of course haven't forgotten each other). Complicating matters, Layla is the target of an assassination attempt.
Didn't care to much for this one. I had a harder time getting into the story. Don't get me wrong, the sexytimes were HOT, but it was just weird under the circumstances (someone has tried to kill you while on the way to testify in court, but who cares! Let's have sex!). Because I wasn't that into the story, moments like this one took me out more (not to mention gave me a case of the giggles): "She's found his prostate." and "...as her pussy spasmed in greedy delight." And let's not forgot this one: "...her womb spasming with need."
I did like the end and how they compromised to solve their issues.

2.5 - 3 stars?
It was good but I liked book 1 better.
It was too heavy on erotica for my liking and despite having a really interesting idea, sadly, the plotline wasn't developed.
And that was a pity since the synopsis sounded so freaking good.
But I'm guessing, same like in case of book 1, this would've been so much better if it wasn't a novelette but a full-length with the right time frame that covers more than 3 days.
Then, we would have the depth and everything.
Here we have a lot of hot sex.
And hot sex.
And some more hot sex.
And then things are wrapped up within a chapter and we have a HEA.
Although, frankly speaking, I wasn't the fan of the idea that he eventually quit his job but I'm not sure why.
And like I said, I kinda liked it, but it could've been so much better if the hot sex was reduced to 1-2 scenes and the story had the time to breathe and develop.
At least a lil bit since this is a novelette.
But a big plus for the reappearance of Jack and Rachel from book 1 Razor's Edge.
I liked it enough to continue with the series.
Wonder if these two will make a reappearance in other books.
I'd like that.

Misleading title
This is the second book I have read under Shadow Stalkers and I am really disappointed.
The tittles are misleading.
I assumed that the books were going to be action packed,hold onto your seat type of books,but they are not.
They are more about love,romance and detailed sex.
I have nothing against sex,but where is the action that the title leads a reader to believe is in the book!

At least the series is holding true. Guy gets the girl through unbeatable odds and everything ends happily ever after.
I don't know if I could ever love done one so much to give up everything and go into WITSEC for them. I guess that's why I keep reading these, because they're all about a love I don't believe in. But they're good enough that I want to see what's gonna happen next for the next Shadow Stalker.

Fun for a quick steamy read. Despite its shortness, it still manages to be better at setting up two characters and a relationship than some other similar novels i've read. Think i liked On Fire better (book 4) cause it was less sugary, but it makes sense, considering the mcs had just met.

Perfect title.. though a novella Sylvia day is able to portray the tearing emotions of Brian and Layla in an intense manner. She also brings out the irony in the situation where both the lovers realise their faults and also regret that it is most untimely to do it. As usual the sex is hot and heated letting the reader take the heat.

I am glad that I chose to listen to the rest of the series. This second book seemed more like a complete story. It also brought in Jack and Rachel which I wanted to have more of them from the first book. I am going to listen to Blood and Roses now as I think it belongs in this series as the 3rd short story.

3.5 - good short story with good characters, but a bit too graphic. I like some romance to be left up to the imagine. This didn’t leave room for that. It was embarrassing to listen to on audiobook.
