Monsters came in all shapes and sizes. They wore custom designer suits and stewardess uniforms. They gave you a job as a stripper or went down on you to help you sleep, but those were just part of the lure. Because when you had learned to trust the monster, when you let your guard down, that's when you got eaten.

This was my first book by Skye Warren, so I really wasn't sure exactly what I would be going into. All I knew is that when I read that blurb, I knew I had to read this book. I'm a big fan of Dark Romance, and this sounded EXACTLY up my alley. Was it everything I thought it would be? Not quite.

Clint is returning home after 8 months of working deep under cover as a special operator in the Army. He doesn't exactly have much to come back to since he received a Dear John text from his live-in girlfriend while still deployed. But he has high hopes that maybe they could still work it out...

Only to come home to see all his things packed up and to find out that she's been cheating on him. Oh and did I mention that she's trying to kick him out of his own place? Poor guy just can't seem to get a break.

Luckily (or not quite so for Clint), the beautiful stewardess that caught his eye on the plane comes to his rescue.

Della is not at all what she appears to be, and her intentions towards Clint are anything but innocent. She's supposed to be doing a job, a simple trade; Clint for her sister. But her plan gets a whole lot more complicated when she begins to have feelings for the sexy soldier.

This book could have easily been a 5 star read for me, if not for a few things...

The insta-love angle
I had a tough time understanding the almost immediate connection these two share. I mean, we go from them barely exchanging a few words on a plane to him staying at her place and fucking like bunnies...

Then Clint goes and shares confidential information from his deployment with her even though he has doubts about who she really is and the secrets she hides. Good job there, Mr. Undercover Man. But I suppose that fits his character? Maybe?

Clint's submissive nature in bed. This is NOT a BDSM book, not at all, but Clint is most definitely the submissive partner in bed. That's certainly not quite my cuppa, so I had a tough time with this one.

He had some Alpha tendencies, but sadly they pretty much got lost within all the time he submitted to Della's MUCH more aggressive sexual nature.

The sex
To be fair, I feel like I should warn readers that this book contains . Yes. As in
Still confused?

It fits the book and the story, HOWEVER, this is not my cuppa at all. I don't have a huge problem with it, and it was written pretty damn hot, but it's not a preference of mine in books.

The suspense part of the story is really what won me over. I spent a large part of the book on pins and needles just waiting for that other shoe to drop.

I really liked the twist that Skye Warren added in the end. I did not see that coming at all. I think that was the very last thing I expected to happen.

I found it to be more an erotic suspense than dark, but that may be because I've been pretty desensitized to Dark Romance, so it takes a LOT for me to label it that genre. There were dark elements here, but not many. At least not in my opinion.

Ultimately did I enjoy this book? Yes.
Is it something that I would have read had I known in advance about Clint's sexual submissiveness and the ? Probably not.
Am I glad I read it? Surprisingly, yes.
Is it something I see myself re-reading in the future? Definitely not.

Writing style: Dual First Person POV

In the Romance Erotica Thriller type of reading I have done... most of the time I can figure out what is the game plan. Big Burly Military Man meets beautiful Woman who has a complication in her life. He will somehow connect with her, saving her from the situation while having time for hot, lusty moments. In the end, they have their HEA and all ends well. If that is what I am looking for, then A-okay.

This time, however, I got much more than I expected.
Oh, I got Clint, the tough, strong burly Military guy. I also got a fella who had done very deep uncover work for his country... putting his life on the line, time and time again. He had a good friendship with another brother in arms . He was at a point where he had just been dumped by a girlfriend while he was overseas by text. Yes... that is correct... a friggin' text. We see him thinking about this as he sits on a plane listening to his friend talk about his woman. They talk about relationships and although there is the usual guy's joking... there is this yearning in him... we get the sense he has never really connected with any of the women he has been with..... he feels like something has been missing.

The flight attendant, Della is attractive; passes by and bumps into his shoulder causing the chain of events bringing them together. He is very aware of her... there is banter... some interaction and flirting from both. He does not make a move but wishes he could. She is very interested in him... He ends up not having a ride home from text-dumping girlfriend like he hoped and while waiting for a cab... our flight attendant pulls over and insists on take him home.

In the truck, both Della and Clint are on heighten awareness... He, because he is so drawn to her but knows or thinks he can't have her. He also is reading mixed messages from her. She is behaving more like she wants to reassure him she is not a threat to him... rather than her being afraid of a strange guy in her truck which would be the norm. Clint is exhausted from traveling for more than 24 hours; he knows something seems a little off, yet he really likes this gal and feels she is wishing she could be more open with him. She drops him off at his apartment. Clint is met with all of his stuff in boxes and ex stating he isn't welcome. The realization of what type of betrayal has gone on in his apartment while he was away makes him decide to walk away... of course, now where is he going to go... interesting enough, Della came back to the apartment as she had something Clint left behind. She offers to bring him back to her place... it seems like a miracle... or is it?

We learn through both Della's and Clint's POV's what exactly is happening. She has dark secrets which are forcing her to behave in a way she wishes weren't the case. He is drawn to her but is the gentleman... never forcing an issue... playing things carefully to see what she will do... it is out there ... both are attracted to each other...and this is where everything gets very interesting ....

This story had the intrigue, the risks and need for the characters to interact and move the story. There was purpose and deception... it was all laid out and made sense. There was an added element which I found very different from the other books like these ... there was a reverse in who was the dominant player between these two. Della, due to her history... was the one who was in control in bed and Clint was at first "allowing" her to be in charge to see what was happening.... and then there was a realization by Clint .... he was all in with this sexual play. I think using a described macho burly man and making his sexual kink openly explored with this woman was very different. The scenes were hot and you could sense all of what each player was feeling at the time... she had conflict happening because of her feelings for him fighting her secrets.... he was overwhelmed by her sexual power and his wanting to do and be everything with her... she had tapped into his deepest needs and he relished in it. It maybe something which all are not into... as there is a true reversal of who is the the one in control and how it all plays out.

If you like a multi-layered story with lots of sexual chemistry... then Skye Warren has come up with something a little different...

3-3.5 STARS

I’ve read some of Skye Warren’s other books and while some are dark, this one was not. This was an entertaining erotic romantic thriller.

The premise for this story seemed predictable…Clint, the alpha Military man saves Della, the sweet, troubled woman from an abusive past and her current predicament. But no, Ms. Warren takes us down the road less traveled with a few surprising twists that made this story more interesting and certainly, unexpected.

 photo onmywayhome_zps92974faa.jpg

There was a role reversal of dominant and submissive, at least between the sheets, with Della being the master (and it made sense given her childhood) and Clint, submitting to her demands. While this is not for everyone, the chemistry was evident, the sex was steamy and it did add to the overall dynamic of Della and Clint. This story also had a surprising and interesting twist that shook things up in a good way.

Skye Warren is one of those authors that faces a dark or tricky subject head on. It may make some uncomfortable or downright disgusted or mad but, it’s never a dull read.

This was really different to what I was expecting.
I was expecting a dark romance.
It kinda was, I suppose. Just not DARK like I thought it would.

I am a HUGE sucker for a Military Alpha romance.
This was kinda one of those.. but in a good way..

Clint is a soldier yes.
Alpha? at times yes.
In the bedroom? No that's ALLLL Della.

She knows exactly what he wants even if he doesn't.
After all that's what she does. Seduces men.

Except she has to betray Clint. She doesn't want too.
But decides to keep him for a bit first.
Teach him some new tricks.

Can she do what she was told to though? or can she keep this soft hearted man forever?

That's all I'm going to say about the plot. Because I hate spoilers.
I will say though that I really liked the way this book was written.
Sky Warren gave us just enough from each POV to kinda figure out what was going on.
Then we thought we were on the right track she changed course.
The sexual chemistry was awesome and could be FELT.
A few "taboo" topics were covered, not once were you not glued to the edge of the seat though.

So why only 3 1/2 stars?
I wasn't a huge fan of the way things just "wrapped up." I had too many questions that I wanted answered.

Another rating of 3.5 Stars
I rated it 3.5 because...

There's a handful of errors.
It tagged on Goodreads as 'Dark' when it's not, it is gritty though.
It was anti-climatic.
Failed to reach needed suspense levels.

I liked both of the lead characters.
The hero was a lovely mix of tough guy, sweet guy and kinda daft (Shhh, I know, but it worked and I liked it!)
I loved the sex scenes. Domme-sub, her regaining her power and him accepting his submissiveness.
The characters 'pasts' were interesting and worked well with the people that they became.

It was a quick read at approx 169 kindle pages. Not my fave Skye Warren book and definitely a little different for her. I enjoyed it, but wouldn't read it again.

4.5 stars!!

Skye Warren is one of my go-to authors for dark erotica so I jumped at the chance to read On the Way Home. She is such a gifted writer that I will read anything she writes! Clint is returning home from the military and is given the boot by his girlfriend. Right from the start we can see that Clint is not your typical military alpha guy, he might be tough but he is almost too nice and seems to let women walk all over him. On the flight home, he is immediately attracted to the beautiful flight attendant, Della.

Of course, there is more than meets the eye with Della. She is involved with dangerous criminals and is on a mission which will involve Clint in the worst possible ways.

As with all Skye Warren’s books, On the Way Home is twisty, sexy and SMOKING hot. It has all the elements I love in a good read: a hot military hero, suspense, edginess and lots and lots of steamy romance.

Clint and Della had scorching-hot chemistry with the added twist of Clint craving submission in the bedroom. He played right into Della’s hands but I loved that the author gave Della redeeming qualities, and the emotions between the two characters felt very real. There is lots of suspense in this book and great twists and turns in the story. All in all, On the Way Home was thrilling, suspenseful and sexy as hell. Skye Warren can simply do no wrong!

I hate it when there's no chemistry between the hero and the heroine, the story becomes flat and the sex scenes... grrr it makes me so prudish I was skipping most of those pages. I don't even like both main characters, especially the hero, he's a friggin soldier and he'd divulged confidential information to this girl he just met and had sex with. I mean that's the stupidest thing ever!!! The heroine just suck! Nothing to like about her. Moving on.

Wow. Claramente no me esperaba esa intensidad sexual y emotiva.

Having just returned from a mission, Clint is ready to move on with his life--especially now that he has been unceremoniously dumped. He is not looking to get in a relationship. Really, he doesn't even have where to sleep for the night! However, that doesn't mean he doesn't notice the attractive stewardess on his flight back home. There's just something about her that draws him in.

Della has only one task to complete. But how could she when she is confronted with her target and she can't see past his good looks and his bigger heart? But she must do what she has to for her sister's life hangs in the balance of her actions.

This story was so very juicy! From the romance to the suspense of not knowing how it all was going to be played out, Skye Warren didn't hold back any punches when it came to tell Clint and Della's story.

Whoop! Give it up for a woman who knows what she wants in the bedroom and is not afraid to go for it, even if her life is in shambles and she's in danger--that's tenacity right there, people!

Anyway, I loved Clint and Della together. I loved their interactions. Their exchanges ranged from the flirty and fun to the guarded and suspicious. There were many layers to both characters and although it took some time for them to get rid of them, the most important aspects of their personalities shined through. At least enough for me to want to see where they were headed and cheer them on.

Needless to say that Clint and Della's chemistry was scotching HOT. I tell you, that first encounter alone put things in motion and set my expectations mighty high for the others that must be coming. And meet my expectations they all did! Goodness you could light a fire with the heat these two were bringing to the page. However, that wasn't the only thing that were brought about. Nope. The author made sure to bring the character's emotions every step of the way along with their doubts, fears and hesitations. I loved that they trusted each other up to a point, but that they still doubted the other's true intentions.

As for the plot and conflict resolution, I think the author did a great job in bringing those to the page in a way that didn't take away from the romance that was blooming between Clint and Della. There was a bit of mystery, a bit of action and lots of details in regards to what the situation truly was. Some things may have been a bit too over the top, but the overall story was enjoyable regardless.

All in all, an interesting concept which resulted in one very hot enjoyable read.

Three Stars for On the Way Home

Hi, my name is Anna and I'm an embarrassment to the women's movement!

description

What can I say? I had a hard time with this book. I couldn't find the love for our hero. He was hot, buff, a soldier but I found myself asking the same question over and over again.

description

Pretty early on, we are witness to one of the most horrendous women to ever grace the overused screen of my kindle. I had to walk away and scream into a pillow- she was that hideous. She's a complete cow who commits one of the worst offenses against a man- a soldier and has the nerve to try and paint herself as the victim. How does our hero respond, you ask? Does he yell? Does he throw her out of his apartment? Nope!!!

description

Skye Warren is an author I've enjoyed reading over and over. She is almost at the point where her work appears and I automatically one-click. Her books are somewhat unconventional, the don't always have the ending that gives you the warm and fuzzies. On the Way Home was not much different but as much as I liked Clint- I couldn't get over his submissiveness. it took away some of the dynamic for me but I suspect this is intentional. Our ereaders are flooded with nothing but alpha males who grunt and screw their way into the hearts of many readers. It was interesting to finally read about a reversal of roles from what I have grown accustomed to.

Della was strong, conflicted, and a domme. She actually had him by the junk. I liked the story and as I've always loved about Skye Warren's work- there's a little of the unpredictable...a twist. Plentiful are the characters you will love to despise and a nice amount of time is devoted to really feeling this couple's chemistry and connection.

I would recommend to many who like a little unconventional, especially if you've enjoyed Skye Warren in the past. But this one was simply not for me.

I'm so sad for me right now, apparently I only like my men one way...

“Hundreds of passengers, thousands of them, and I had to fall for the one I was supposed to kill.”

On the Way Home has so many aspects that I love in a book: suspense, steamy sex, ruthless crime bosses, a military leading male, and dark, gritty, and twisty romance.

When Clint and Della meet the chemistry is immediate, but unfortunately their encounter is not by chance. Powers beyond their control are at work and their lives are seriously at risk. It seems simple: Della must turn over Clint in exchange for her sister’s life. But it’s not simple, not at all; the crime plot surrounding them is much deeper, and their attraction is more than a complication. They find in each other what they each need and want, both emotionally and sexually. The sex scenes are super hot and I loved the power dynamic between the couple.

The intrigue and suspense, as well as Clint and Della’s relationship kept the pages flying by. The story is topped off by an action-packed climax and a satisfying happily-ever-after (sort of). I highly recommend this to readers that enjoy their romance with a dark, edgy, and suspenseful twist.

“I liked things twisted. I wanted a man as strong and capable and fearless as him, but I wanted him at my feet.”

*4.25* I wasn't sure how I was going to like this because the woman is supposedly the dominant one in bed, and I sure like my alpha male. So I was surprised that I loved this new one from the author and it worked for me. There is light suspense, and there is some grittiness but not too dark. I liked Della and Clint. Clint may give up control between the sheets, but it's because he gets turned on getting bossed around by Della, but make no mistake he can be alpha if he wants to, he's an operator in the U.S. Army after all ... and he did have his badass moments though he *cough* got led around by his dick ... but all ends well ... this is an ideal fast sexy read and has a plot other than sex.

I'm sorry, I did not like this book. I usually love Skye Warren, her deep, dark twisted "Carlos" stories are among my favorites. But this book made me very uncomfortable. I did not like the relationship between the "dom" woman and the "sub" Navy Seal at all. I'd probably be a dream subject of some psychiatrist to figure out the "why's" of that dislike, but I just know I didn't like it, didn't like the book and skimmed most of it and will read the next Skye Warren book when it comes out.

Yum, the hottie on the cover...

This was very entertaining yet disturbing as well with Dela's past. It was definitely hot but dang, the sex scenes I was visualizing, as strong and hot as the man on the cover, it really did the opposite of turning me on, the visuals just took all that hotness and strength away *snort* that aside? Very good read.

Eh....I liked Clint when he was in military mode, but the submissive bedroom stuff did not sit well with me. Eww. My other issues: (a) insta-love..why did he even like Della? (b) lack of true suspense or action (c) insta-forgiveness of Della for almost getting him tortured and killed??

1) BDSM here is pretty light
2) while i appreciated that he recognized her sister would trump him in her world, I do think he could have been a bit angrier with her at the end, tbh. Book needed another 50 pages for a HEA, this is more HFN in my opinion.

First of all, don’t believe the blurb or the sample; they’re totally misleading. Second, this is, in my opinion, unreadable garbage. You decide.

First we get a flashback prologue to heroine Della’s formative childhood trauma. Very bad men come to already unhappy household, kill one of her sisters (and presumably their parents), and take her and her surviving sister. Cut to the present day.
The story proper opens on hero Clint exhausted and crammed into yet another too-small airplane seat. He’s on the last leg of a 24-hour trip back to the States after a particularly unpleasant spec ops assignment. He notices the pretty stewardess (Della), but he’s respectful and doesn’t flirt. When a passenger has a medical emergency he helps her handle it, then returns to his seat. At the airport, his shitty, probably-ex girlfriend is nowhere to be found. Della sees him stranded and offers to drive him home. He reluctantly accepts, telling her “I have a girlfriend.” There are mild sparks, but they keep it clean. She can instantly tell he’s a natural submissive, because *forced-into-prostitution backstory* she can tell.
He’s nice, and it kills her, because this whole thing is actually a setup: she’s being forced to honey-trap him for a “Dmitri” who’s clearly the head Very Bad Man from the prologue. This Dmitri has been keeping her addict sister as his literal crack whore, and he wants the Top Secret Information that Clint has-but-should-not-have. To free her sister she has to do this one last job for him. But for some reason she finds she can’t. Instead of taking him to Dmitri, she really does just drive him home.

Dropped off at his apartment, Clint finds all his stuff piled in the hall— while he was gone, Shitty Girlfriend kicked him out of his own place and moved another guy in. Wow. Inexplicably, he accepts this! He just schlumps back out into the hall thinking how tight it’ll be paying rent on two places. Wat. Just then Della shows back up with a forgotten item, and she offers to let him crash at her house. She’s all mixed signals; something’s definitely off with her. But later for that, he’s dead tired. Sleep, now. She sets him up in her guest room and then quite literally jumps his barely-conscious bones in a blowjob scene that comes entirely out of nowhere.
Er, okay…? That was abrupt and weird and didn’t make a lot of sense. But… huh. Okay. Recalibrating! I guess this is just straight up erotica then? And I should forget about romance, smooth transitions, or any effort to stitch the porn clips together? Gotta say, I’m a bit thrown off given the blurb and the sample, but… okay I guess. Whatever. Moving on.

In the morning she makes him a huge breakfast… and then suddenly they’re somehow in bed again and all attempts at sense-making and recognizable human behavior are completely abandoned. He’s unusually passive and she jumps right to FemDomMode™, and there’s little explanation. She teases him, then starts a little game: one item of clothing for every question you answer honestly, and anything you can see, you can touch. Oooh, sexy! First question: name, rank, and serial number.
Er? Well that’s not very sexy. He’s like, ‘Weird. And like, this kinda feels like an actual interrogation? But hey, maybe that’s her kink.’ He gamely answers. Next question: how long have you been in the military? These… are not sexy questions. And they don’t feel idle. Hmm. But he answers. Next question: what did you do on your last mission? Instead of sitting up and going ‘okay, wtf,’ he answers evasively. When she refuses to remove the next item of clothing, he becomes so horny and fired up and angry at the whole situation that he overpowers her, pins her down, and bitterly answers everything— what he was doing, and where, and how long.

For the record, that last sentence was not just crazy, but double crazy.

Since he answered two questions, he rips off her bra and panties, because, y’know, he earned it. And since she’s painfully immobilized, he goes ahead and starts sticking fingers in places. Insanely, she apologizes to him.
Her eyes widened, but I was too far gone to think about how a civilian might be afraid. I was too pissed off to care if she wanted to back out. … I plunged two fingers inside her pussy, rough and vengeful.
“I didn’t—” She looked stricken.
“You didn’t say I could touch you here? Why, because I can’t see it? Deep inside where you’re so wet and swollen for me, I can’t see it, but I can feel it.”
Her eyes were wide. “I didn’t mean to hurt you.”
Huh. Maybe I missed where this was marked as alternate universe erotica…?
Anyway, she’s not at all freaked out by this, because she can also just-tell that he would never hurt her. Which… not to be contrary but, I’m pretty sure he already is? But I'm from Earth, so what do I know. Hey, do you hear that thunderous ticking noise? Ah yes. Sounds like the Fuck This Shit I’m Out countdown clock has begun.

And now back to our program, where it’s somehow only Chapter 6, the sample is an unrecoverable memory, sad-eyed heroine is pinned down with her clothes torn off, and submissive hero’s “rough, vengeful,” consent-free fingerbang is already in progress.

He thinks about how he could (and indeed would like to) totally just stick it in and have a good time “even with her shouting no,” which is fine because (he tells us) “she wouldn’t say no.” Aaand just like that I hate him.
The game is clearly over, what with him flipping the figurative table, but he’s on a pissed-off roll. He’s so very out-of-control ticked that that she managed to extract all this sensitive info that he volunteers the most sensitive info: that there was Something More to that mission, and he’s in possession of some very secret, super illegal information related to international security. As one does. When one is a highly trained so-classified-you-don’t-exist veteran dark operative. Y’ALL. Seriously, HaBO. How am I supposed to suspend this??
Well. Now he’s really pissed off. Super pissed that he “had confided in this woman, that I’d let her lead me around by my dick … that she pried into things she shouldn’t know about” (recall: he volunteered that info, so he could see her tits). So super pissed that:
I made her pay for it by pushing inside her without any warning, by stretching the walls of her pussy with my cock until she gasped and clenched and shuddered in my arms.
Yes, that is correct. Perhaps inevitably, he goes right ahead and fucks her— without actual consent, and without a condom— but see, it’s fine because he’s not thinking “I’ma just rape her”…anymore. Now he’s confusedly thinking, “at the very least I can give her an orgasm.” And he does (I think?), so it’s fine. Also, he pulls out and comes on her belly. Also, thanks to Dmitri, she’s been raped like, a ton of times before. So it’s fiiine, you guys.
…shuddered in my arms.
“Clint. Oh, Clint.”
Jesus, she sounded sad. It made me want to hide her away and cheer her up.
Have you considered removing your cock from her body? That might cheer her u— BUUUZZZZZZZ

Ooo. Welp! That sound means we’re out of time, folks!
Fuck this shit I’m out.

Hard DNF at 37%.

Wow! I wasn't expecting to find this an amazing read. I loved the twists and the inside jokes by the end of this book. It wasn't just about this tagged as Erotica but it the story is interesting too. I've definitely cracked up with some of the dialogues. It could really make me laugh and I think I rarely laugh with romance novels. Cause it ain't really my kind of genre. But this one's a short read and is nice in its own way. I'm glad to have picked this up with Maria from my team in a challenge.

On the way home is arguably a good story. The characters are mature and well thought out, and the story is actually quite good. The author wanted a Mafia type story and I bought it.
But, alas, these newer novels are never properly planned. You can see it while reading that the author had had an idea that let's make a story in which there's drugs and an army guy and a girl with ties to a drug lord. Where she fell is the point when she didn't think about HOW she's gonna PORTRAY her story.
As good as the blurb may have sounded, the things happening in the book are extremely convenient for the author to go on with her story. At the start, Clint just decided to trust Della and hop in the car with her. Clint's girlfriend had been cheating on him behind his back, had broken up with him through a "dear john" letter and may I also mention that she had been living in HIS apartment all this time? That's where the author just decided to throw in the world's biggest bullshit. So Clint leaves his apartment with his g.f and even though she breaks up with him, goes off to her home to talk and guess what the g.f had done??? Thrown out all his stuff (the author wasn't clear on how long the stuff had been lying out in the hallway. I mean the g.f did break up with him months ago so did she throw it out then? But then why didn't anyone notice it outside? People are O.K with a T.v and a dozen boxes lying outside? What did the author think? That I won't notice?) and moved in her new b.f with her!!! What a bitch, right?? Now guess how Clint responds?? "Ok, babes you can stay here and don't worry about the bills. I'll just keep on paying it. Oh! and I don't mind that I've been paying the bill even when I was in some other country and I can't kick you out cause "you have settled here and you feel like it's your home"" I'm not even kidding. This is how that idiot's mind worked. And then we find out Della had listened to all of it. Another way the author made it all convenient for her story was that Clint left his identification tags with Della cause well, people forget things as important as these in a stranger's hand all the time
This whole g.f mess allowed author to let Clint go and live with Della. To be honest, I dunno what purpose this fact that Clint owned his apartment and his g.f lived there even served. I mean, why couldn't the author have just made it out as though the g.f owned the apartment? or that there WAS no g.f? What was the purpose of the g.f? Della could have convinced him to stay with her some other way!
Moving on, they go off to live at Della's place, sex happens (within 20 hours) and it is revealed that Della has ties with some drug lord who is currently black mailing her by using her sister (who, I may add, is living with this Dimitri by her own consent). So, Della has to give away Clint to Dimitri to free her sister.
We are also introduced to Della's neighbor. Here's where the author doesn't shy away from making up completely ABSURD shit. The neighbor, Katie, despite being "legally blind" can SEE "shapes" during day light or some shit like that.
When Della goes to meet Dimitri to convince him not to take Clint, Clint sneaks into her truck bed to go with her and Katie goes on to warn Della she saw a "big shape" moving around her lawn. Della believes this outrageously stupid fact that Katie can't see and isn't alarmed when Katie tells her about the shape. Yea, by this time, I was convinced the author may have had a couple of glasses before writing this particular part.
It is later revealed that Katie is a top-secret FBI agent and is trying to catch Dimitri. Yea, I still think Della is kind of dumb to believe Katie's "I'm blind but I can technically see" theory.
So, the story ends up with Dimitri being killed, her sister being revealed to be a bitch who would do anything for power (including betraying her own sister and bashing up another girl's face to make it look like she was tortured), Della getting injured enough to be admitted into the hospital and they live happily ever after.
What I liked in this story was the dominant nature of Della. I've never read a story in which the girl is dominant. It's always guys being cocky, controlling everyone, bossing people around blah blah blah. But this author tried something different. So I gave her 3 stars for that (although the lame points mentioned above should've reduced the rating but oh, well, I liked Della's nature far too much).
I loved how Clint didn't try to control Della. he relinquished all control despite being an army guy and being so strong. So, yea, kudos to that.
I hope to read more well-thought-out novels by the author in the future.

A copy of this book was provided to me by the author for an honest review at Seductive Musings.

On the surface, the premise of Skye Warren’s ON THE WAY HOME seems simple. Clint is a soldier returning from a recent tour in Afghanistan, where he’s witnessed the worst of humanity, thanks to the undercover operation he was supporting there. Now all he wants to do is get back to a normal life, although he’s not quite sure if it’s still there for him. Della is the flight attendant on his plane home who has been warned she can only save her captive sister if Clint is handed over as compensation. Fate practically delivers him into her hands without much effort on her part. But how can she give this handsome stranger to someone she knows will kill him? And what will happen if she changes her mind?

There have been so many dark and angsty New Adult romances released in the past few years that I’ve just about sworn off them for good. But the beauty of reading is that there's always at least one writer out there who can make me love something I've vowed to hate forever. And apparently for dark and angsty New Adult romance, that writer is Skye Warren. Della’s tragic history is never played for sympathy or cheap sentiment, only as a necessary backdrop to why she would even consider turning Clint over to a known murderer. Clint is shown as the more sympathetic character whose weariness has caused him to let down his emotional guard, however briefly, and his temporary weakness may well be a fatal misstep. But when Della decides to reach out just once to take what she sees within him, it’s the shock of their unusually compatible souls recognizing each other that forces the reader to cheer for them both to prevail. The road to their happy ending takes a series of twists and turns that might seem improbable in a less skilled writer’s hands, but it all makes sense by the end, and that feeling of rightness makes the journey there worthwhile and completely satisfying. Their road to love was dark, but not too dark, and it was beautiful to see Della and Clint both find security and happiness in each other. ON THE WAY HOME is yet another extraordinary story from Skye Warren and I loved every moment of it.

So I had previously read Wanderlust by Ms. Warren and did not love it! I think it was because the lead male shared the name Hunter with my son, anyways I digress. So when I got an ARC of this novel, I was somewhat skeptical…..let me tell you THIS BOOK IS A RED HOT READ!!!!!

So let’s start out with the cover! This guy is HAWT!!! ………and what a great image to have in your mind as this story progresses. Clint is a military operative returning from the Middle East with his friend James, when they meet Della the flight attendant. Even from the first exchange of words between Clint and Della, one can tell their chemistry is going to be amazing.

So the story picks up when Clint is left stranded at the airport and Della offers a ride home that leads to a stay at her home in the span of a few hours. Now this totally sounds crazy, and Clint realizes this through the story and admits it kinda fucked up!!! But if you go along with the story, and learn the connections between Della and Clint, it’s just an awesome/intriguing/suspenseful/erotic story.

Now the chemistry and sex is out of this world. Della has a dominant streak that probably would not work with super alpha Clint, but seriously it so works in this story. To see such a dominant like Clint submit to Della makes for some great scenes!!

Della: “Lie down in the bed, soldier.”

Clint: “Della?”

Della: “That’s an order.”

Clint: Fuck, why was that so hot? I couldn’t help the streaks of lust that ran through me. Couldn’t do anything but obey her….and then she was in front of me, where I still couldn’t see her smile—but I could feel, curved and wicked when it met my lips with a kiss.

The book is also full of suspense, if you can’t read it all the way through in one sitting at the beach or pool you will be thinking about the characters and the situations until you can finish. It keeps you going till the end. Della has to make some big sacrifices to save the ones she loves. The idea of choosing family or the love of your life is compelling and heartbreaking.

Do yourself a favor and get this book! You can’t go wrong!!

Did not connect with or 'buy into' the two main characters -Clint & Della in this book, no real emotional depth. Couldn't accept that a big macho guy would allow his ex-girlfriend to take over his apartment and throw him out and he's still paying the rent and the lease is in his name? (that's illegal) WTF? She'd left all his stuff in the landing- how long had it been there? And she was cheating on him and he goes along with it wondering how he's going to pay rent on two places? Just ludicrous, surely the author could do better than this? Twilight Zone, anyone? What a dumbass and he's supposed to be a special ops hard man? Not on this planet! Where's the anger and outrage at this abusive female? Just not on. Hated it!

So, he conveniently goes along with Della (he'd left her with his 'dog-tags', this never happens as that's his ID) without any warning bells going off! He's returning from a dangerous (secret mission with some very sensitive data) and yet he is not on high alert? Because in reality he would be. FYI there are no 'jungles' in Afghanistan, it's mostly desert! Jungles are in the tropics and there are no jungles in Russia either. More research author! Actually educate yourself regarding your subject matter! Another thing people die with their eyes open not closed! And they usually urinate and defecate as the muscles totally relax. Unless they are sedated! That's why they used to weight the eyes with coins to keep the eyes closed after death and to 'pay the mythological ferryman'! Today they sew them shut in the morticians.

Within a few hours they are playing sexual games and 'Mr Passive' loses control, gives up his crucial secret information (special ops are trained not to give up intelligence even whilst being tortured) so this nonsense also. The clarions should have been rocking the inside of his skull, loud and clear.
He then rapes her and she apologies for hurting him? WTF? This is not sexy, rape is not about sex at all, it's about POWER!!! It's not about love either! Abuse is never sexy regardless of gender! Later on in the story, Della basically rapes Clint with a strap-on, whilst he is handcuffed and bound with a spreader bar, this is not sexy either! Another power play by a 'twisted and sick' Domme. Two wrongs do not make a right and never will. Cannot stress enough the importance of CONSENT!!! Authors should be able to write more imaginative and creative stories without using this as a plot device. If not, then give up writing and don't expect people to pay for garbage!!! It just shows the authors lack of cognitive thinking and debases the 'supposed beloved' characters who the author wants us to fall in love with. YEAH RIGHT! If you fall for this rubbish - I've got a bridge to sell you!

So, after she rapes him, drugs him, she goes to deliver him to Dmitri. (Abuse, violation, betrayal of the worst kind, to an innocent.) The author previously stated that Clint weighs 260 pounds. It's just ridiculous to suggest that a slender woman could ever manhandle a bloke of this size, drag him down a set of stairs, (1st floor to ground floor) drag him through the house, down the porch steps and lift him up in the back of a pick-up truck and because he's drugged, this is 'dead weight'. Not possible - never in a million years! Two beefy macho military men would struggle with a body this size. Plain bloody stupid writing, GAWD give me a break- another bridge anyone? And the most ludicrous part - yeah- he's still going to love her! The femme-fatale! In your dreams! Blah, blah, blah!
Moving on, stupid Della receives the fingernails and automatically assumes they're real, believes they are her sisters, she didn't check them out, see if they were actually real or a stunt/fakes or questions them at all??? Throws them in the garbage. Later to be found by the 'fakest ever' FBI cover story known to man. A 'blind' operative (Katie) who is supposedly legally blind but can see in the sun??? But our moronic heroine falls for the cover story. Is this the stereotypical 'dumb-blonde' story? Oh, but remember she was 'old' at nineteen, seen a lot in her young sleazy life and knew the ropes. She's awfully gullible for someone who has lived amongst criminal elements since she was twelve involving prostitution, drugs, the slave trade and gun running!

What about Dmitri's dead thugs at his house that Clint killed - no further mention of these or their discovery. After Clint disappeared from the truck, she didn't think Clint was still there? Just Dmitri's thugs? Which turned out weren't there? The ground was dusty? Why? After Clint had stated that the grounds were green lawns with manicured hedges and rivalled an "English" manor? When Clint shot Dmitri he stood long enough for Della to question if he would take cover when actually his brains were blown out? No way, when your shot you hit the ground like a lump of lead.
Upon entering the house and confronting Caro, who held them at gun point, she doesn't get Clint to drop his gun? WTF? Just "put your hands in the air". (convenient for the 'shoot-out) This plot point is just too weak! Defies belief! Really thin plot!!!

The scene after Clint shot Caro and the smashed coffee table makes absolutely no sense, why would he need to grab Caro's arm to see if it was Della when Della was already kneeling beside the body with a cloth pressed to the wound - this would have taken Della several seconds to get said cloth and use it. So how could Clint confuse them? Lacks situational perspective and imagination? And where were D's goons?

Now, the ambulance scene. Della explains her innermost fears whilst the ambulance takes her sister away and then Katie (no-longer blind) is there asking questions, Clint stalls her and then the ambulance arrives? WTF? Said that a lot whilst reading this book! Does the author not re-read what she has written a few lines ago? So, they walk Della to the ambulance, past her sister's body, remove some glass from her, drug her and out she goes like a light! So how did she tell Clint her secrets whilst waiting for them to remove her sister in the ambulance??? This is just bad ,bad, bad juvenile writing or perhaps the author 'indulges' in too many/much whilst writing?

It was so, so, obvious the data was hidden in the medal case, picked that one as soon as 'snoopy' Della went through his bag (invasion of privacy). Loves violating people doesn't she? If Della was so badly injured with the shattered glass and needed several surgeries and many days in hospital, what the fuck was she doing walking around after the 'shoot out'? She would have' bled out' or bled everywhere! And what happened with Clint's apartment? Did he finally stop paying the rent or kick her out? Because the lease was in his name and he was' in reality' sub-leasing it to Chelsea, which is illegal!
This book was flat, dull and full of plot line errors and left too many unanswered questions for it to be considered a HEA! Wouldn't bother with it. This author is getting worse.

I'm a fan of Skye Warren, and thought this book had an interesting premise.

Clint's returning home after a secret mission when he meets Della, a hot flight attendant, on the last leg of his trip. When his girlfriend Chelsea doesn't show up to meet him, he accepts Della's offer to drive him home, only to discover that Chelsea's thrown him out, and now he has nowhere to go. Della offers him space at her house, and he reluctantly accepts, and so Clint unwittingly starts down the slippery slope to submission at Della's hands. Della has a Dark Past, and despite her growing feelings for Clint, she knows she can't get too attached, since she's being forced to turn him and his secret list over to the monster who is controlling her sister.

While I'm generally not a big fan of Domme stories, Warren does a nice job of illustrating the D/s dynamic when it's a woman giving the orders...and it's interesting to read why it's so easy for Clint to sink into the submissive role...and yes, the sex is pretty hot.

But sadly, it can't compensate for characters that I found difficult to like, or for the yawning plot holes. Della has devoted her entire life to saving her sister Caro from evildoers, even though it's abundantly clear to everyone (except Della) that Caro is quite happy with them, thanks. Della's gullible, not-too-bright, and fully prepared to sacrifice Clint (well, she does cry a little) -- except he manages to escape at the last minute. Clint is..as they say...as dumb as a bag of hammers. He allows his ex-girlfriend to evict him from his own apartment!!! He's happy to tell Della all about his secret missions and the intelligence that is being gathered, and he doesn't blink twice when he discovers that Della's being watched by the FBI! Maybe he's color blind and can't see all those red flags....

So..just 3 stars.

Skye Warren is one of my go to authors. I've read every one of her books and love her Dark Erotica series. On the Way Home is different than a lot of Skye's books. While dark, it is not as dark as some of her other books. If you're looking to try a Skye Warren book and are afraid of dark romances this would be a good book to start with.

Even though On the Way Home is not as dark as some of the others this is definitely not a light romance novel. There are bad guys in the world and Skye Warren knows how to write about them.

Clint is a hero. He's your all American boy soldier coming home on leave. He's very trusting and almost innocent. Della, on the other hand, is not innocent. She is a former stripper who is now trying to make her way in the world. But to save her sister from crime and drugs, Della agrees to go against her values. Clint is set up by Della. She appears to help Clint when his girlfriend kicks him out, but it's all one big trap.

I really enjoyed reading about these two. I read a lot of books with very dominant men and very submissive women and this was a change. Clint is big, strong guy, but he has a submissive streak. He is used to taking orders from the Army and he submits when ordered. Della is much smaller than Clint, but she knows how to dominate him. She takes charge and the scenes are really sexy. It was a refreshing change to read about a dominant woman and a submissive man. I wouldn't say Dom/sub because they didn't take it that far. There was no formal power exchange, but Della was definitely the dominant one in the relationship.

The two together were very sexy.

Another hit for Skye Warren that I strongly recommend!

4.5 Stars!!!
5 Flames for Hotness!!

If you are in the mood for a book of hot sex and a little intrigue you have come to the right book. Clint is a sexy solider with a few secrets, Della is a gal that has a dark past with a few secrets of her own. Together they steam up the sheets and keep you on the edge of your seat.

This book was addicting. I read it one setting. I loved Clint. He was sweet, a gentleman and had his heart broken too many times. I wanted to scoop him up out of the pages and comfort him. Della liked to dominate Clint and it fit with the story line perfectly because Della was a seducer.

The reason for the 4.5 stars instead of 5 is the story seemed to have an abrupt ending. I would have liked to see their relationship develop just a bit more and see some kind of bow-tie ending. Other than that I loved this book.

This is my first Skye Warren book and will not be my last. I have The Beauty Series on my TBR list. I would recommend this book if you like some hotness with a little mystery involved.

My Favorite Quotes

“I wasn't planning on rushing you, I swear, but I gotta know… will you marry me? – Clint

“Of course you’d protect your sister. And of course I’d help you. Yes, even if I died to do it. You think I’d go to another country and die for a stranger, but I wouldn’t die for you? I’m your, Della. I’ve been your since you first offered me some godd**n peanuts on the flight home.” - Clint

This book was hot. The plot was different than anything else that I've read.

I did like On The Way Home, but I didn't love it. The plot was original and it had potential to be my next favorite book, but somewhere down the road it just fell flat. I don't really know what happened, I just didn't connect with it.

The writing was good, it didn't suck me in right away. It took me a little while to get into this story. I did want to find out what happened next, so that's a good thing.

I have to say that I didn't really like Della all that much. I liked Clint, but I didn't fall head over heels in love with him. At times he came off as a little weak and I like my guys to be alphas at all times. Clint wasn't all the time, he had his moments. But, it was clear that Della was the one in control in the relationship.

This is a dark romance, and I love my share of dark romances. But, there were a few scenes in this book that shocked me and made me cringe a little. I'm still cringing thinking about one in particular. The sex scenes were very steamy.

Overall, I did enjoy this story. It just wasn't my cup of tea, but it may be yours. With that being said, I will probably read another book by this author.

He's a Killer on the streets, but her sub between the sheets
Have had this one on hold for a while so am kicking myself over the delay.

Clint returns to the US after his last undercover special forces tour, which was successful particularly harrowing, leaving one of his buddies in a coma following torture and extracting a top secret list of powerful criminal activity happening back on home shores.

He is rescued from homelessness (after his piece of crap girlfriend dumped him then threw his stuff out of his own apartment, which he had already paid n full for - sheesh!!!) by the h, Della,

Della has issues, and has her own demons to pacify ...and a sister to save.

Together Della and Clint discover his sexual submissive as well as bring down Dimitri, the crime boss .

But all is not as it seems...seriously.

This was a short but punchy read. Skye really took it there, and then went one step further! This is not dark, more like a gritty read, but well worth it if you want a HEA but the H and h really work for it.

So, another for the Thinking Woman's Smexy Hotreads list I'd say...
