“Revenge of the Lawn Gnomes” by R.L. Stine is my second Goosebumps horror book this summer. I decided in June that each summer going forward would be a “Summer of Goosebumps” where I’d enjoy at least one Goosebumps book each month in June, July, and August. For July, I went with this book, and it did not disappoint.
Funny enough, this is one of those Goosebumps books I don’t remember reading as a kid. When I was 12, my first Goosebumps book was “Night of the Living Dummy,” which I remember to some degree, and other books in the series involving summer camp, haunted houses, and creatures, but never about lawn gnomes.
Right from the start, I enjoyed the whole “annoying brother” and “smart sister” dynamic between Joe and Mindy. I have a younger brother, so I know exactly what Mindy went through as a kid. It was all very relatable. It set the tone for what awaited, as it was a very quick book to read. I loved the super-short chapters, all of which were a breeze to get through.
I love Stine’s brilliance as a writer. Even now, as an adult, I appreciate how phenomenal he is with characters, storytelling, and the usual frights found in Goosebumps. The way he drops subtle little hints of horror that hit you when you least expect it is fantastic. I especially love it when he does that at the end of certain chapters, which I guarantee will make horror readers, young and old, smile.
The overall creepiness of the gnomes was a lot of fun to read, especially how Stine let the slow-burning horror build until some wild things were finally unveiled. Don’t worry, no spoilers here, but it’s worth the patience for the thrill ride from the 70% mark of the book on.
I couldn’t put this book down because the suspense and plot twists along the way were so damn good. Once I got to the end, I had no idea that all of that would transpire, and again, it was magnificent. It’s that patented wholesome horror you’ve come to love from Stine and the legendary Goosebumps book series.
I give “Revenge of the Lawn Gnomes” by R.L. Stine a 5-Star rating out of 5. It’s a bit of a slow burn until things start picking up in the final half, and once it does, it’s glorious. I loved all the characters, story, and of course, the lawn gnomes! It was pretty weird and disturbing once things were revealed, and well, let’s just say I will never look at a lawn gnome the same ever again.
