H έναρξη της πανεπιστημιακής διδασκαλίας της Επιστήμης των Υλικών στην Ελλάδα ήλθε με μια καθυστέρηση περίπου 30 ετών από τότε που θεσπίστηκε σαν ανεξάρτητη επιστήμη στις Αγγλοσαξονικές χώρες. Αυτός είναι και ένας από τους κυριότερους λόγους για την έλλειψη ενός πανεπιστημιακού συγγράμματος στα Ελληνικά που να μπορεί να καλύψει το μεγαλύτερο μέρος της ύλης που διδάσκεται στα Τμήματα της Επιστήμης των Υλικών αλλά και σε άλλα Τμήματα Θετικών Επιστημών αλλά και Πολυτεχνικών Σχολών. Το βιβλίο του καθ. Callister έχει πια καταξιωθεί διεθνώς ως ένα από τα πιο βασικά συγγράμματα της Επιστήμης των Υλικών. Είναι ένα καθαρά εισαγωγικό βιβλίο και δεν είναι υπερβολή να ειπωθεί ότι διδάσκεται στην πλειοψηφία στα περισσότερα Τμήματα Επιστήμης και Τεχνολογίας των Υλικών στο εξωτερικό. Η χρησιμότητα του συγγράμματος και μάλιστα της πέμπτης έκδοσης βασίζεται στο γεγονός ότι καλύπτει το μεγαλύτερο μέρος της ύλης σε ικανοποιητικό βάθος, έχει σύγχρονη δομή, δίνει ξεκάθαρα τους στόχους μάθησης ανά κεφάλαιο και, τέλος, περιέχει πληθώρα ασκήσεων και μελετών περιπτώσεων. A decent but very incomplete introductory materials science book. I used this for my freshman intro course. It could have done a much better job of introducing biomaterials, ceramics, and crystal defects.. However, Callister does his job of introducing crystal structures, band formation, mechanical properties of materials, and polymers. All of these subjects were covered in the first 12 chapters of the book, which is where my course finished.

I enjoyed learning from this book. Watch out for hexagonal crystal systems though, they'll be the bane of you and your homework at 2 am.

Covers the curriculum well for my undergrad course but, as a European with English as my second language, I have to give some feedback.

- It covers stuff too much, to a point where it's hard to find exactly what you're looking for.
- It uses unnecessary hard language. I've had to google words more than once to understand what I was reading. Also, the language is stiff. One example is the frequent use of the word and sentence layout with "respectfully". It has no use, it's better to just write stuff regularely.
- It uses a web page for some problems. This isn't a problem in itself, since there are a bunch of good problems in the book too, I just want to mention it and my dislike for books turning more and more digital.

Keep in mind that this review is my own opinions with my own background.
