The Godhunter #4

Marked by Death

Rate this book
The Fourth Book in the Godhunter Series:

After the battle in Asgard, Vervain Lavine just wants to celebrate the victory with her friends and family. The fact that those friends happen to be gods and the family is a bunch of werewolves and werelions only makes the victory that much sweeter. But the wound from Anubis' blade has scarred over and the cold beginning to spread from it is worrisome. Not to mention the link it's established between her and the Egyptian God of the Dead, who seems intent on making her pay for daring to attack him.
Then there's Demeter, still out to get her, and Ares who may be holding a grudge for the loss of his lover and his left hand. Besides the gods who want her dead, there's the goddess who wants her help stopping a drug lord who also happens to be a god, feeding off overdoses and drug related murders.
So it's a little hard for the Godhunter to celebrate, in fact she can barely sleep ever since the night that she was marked by Death.

And this is where I stop reading. Too much unbelievable sex. Vervain has turned into a mega slut and because of her powers, it is only the beginning. And Trevor just accepts everything. That I cannot accept. I will not continue this series anymore.

I HATED at least half this book....

Ok, I love, love, love this series!!!! But damn, enough w/V being kidnapped and raped either mentally, emotionally or physically every other book or all 3 ,honestly I skipped skimmed most of her time w/Anubis, he was some sick evil monster that made Blue from the 1st book look good,Blue was crazy but his cruelty seemed less bad at least because it didn't last any where near as long and it sure as Hell didn't have all the unwanted details ( come on,WTH we got more details on her sex life in this book being abused a) that was wanted or needed and b) more details than we did we her and the men she LOVES and actually willingly wanted to have sex w/) I did not want or Need all the details of her abuse and rape and her sad crazy Stockholm type moments ,one minute rape Anubis next worried she's not as beautiful as the women around her... The parts w/Anubis were just sick, and as much as I LOVE this series, if the writer thinks what she showed us w/V and Anubis was erotic she's got another think coming her abuse and debasement was not entertaining and didn't need or require a 10th of the details given.... Those scenes were soo messed up!!! I know she was being a abused but it was written like she almost liked it at times even though I know she didn't want it and wasn't in control of her own body but it was sick and weird and confusing and the handling of it almost made me Hate the series!!! Less it more sometimes, kidnapping and abuse were one thing but way too may details and too long and too confusing.... Too much of the story was about that and not enough w/the rest of her ppl,I mean page after disgusting page of unwanted sex w/Anubis but afte she's released is going get together w/Odin,nothing ... WTH !Odin was at least wanted ;(
And now the Thor has become such a Huge D bag can't we just dump him all together ?

I have never left a less than "love" review before and it's mostly because if I don't like a book, I just move on and that's fine with me, I don't need to talk smack on books or authors, I'm sure they hear enough. A lot of the time it's about preference anyway.
With that said, this book has issues. I have loved the books up until now and the authors humor is fantastic but then I got into this one and was like "what the actual crap is going on?". I call this the rape book of the series (as of yet, I hope there isn't a repeat as I do plan to continue reading).
I am not "triggered", I don't have trauma that would cause me to be sensitive to the subject matter here and I was still put off completely.
She is kidnapped, raped and then ends up with a weird Stockholm syndrome thing and it isn't just a chapter, almost the whole book is like this. She forgives him and acts like it's really not a big deal. I don't know what I expected to be different, I know I wasn't requiring her to get revenge or pull some super feminist stuff but COME ON! She's supposed to be a strong female lead character who kills Gods but she's just A-Okay with being raped as punishment while her soul mate is dying without her and she just escapes to tell said soul mate to calm down and then meets with her rapist and tells him she accepts his apology after he does nothing and then he throws her a back hand comment about how he's pretty sure she's gonna love him once her anger has subsided. I feel like the MC has just taken a stupid pill and needs to snap out of it. I swear if she ends up including Anubis in her forming harem I'm gonna be so mad. I will stop reading them if she does.

Very slow burn RH. Don't expect the RH to start until you have read a few books. This is a plot driven series with 30 books and spinoff series.

It's awesome and I kinda love it so much I read the first 7 books back to back. Memorable characters with lots of action and a kickass FMC.

Like book three, this one was quite a lot shorter than the first two - especially so if you remove all the goddamn recaps. Every single time a past event, from any of the books before, was even remotely referred to, all the action in the book would be put on hold till we'd gotten through a half-page to several pages long explanation.
It was... bearable, this time. But the more books we have to recap the more pages will be filled with it, so I'm hoping it's not an ongoing trend.
Also, I'm hoping the next book will see more progression in her ongoing relationships, instead of the book (like this one) focusing completely on a new guy.

Now, for some mild spoilers:

All in all, though: A good book. I will read the next.

I love this series but I think I hate this book. Most of the book was about Vervain being raped and about her experience with Stockholm. I felt disgusted the entire time she was with Anubis. The only reason why I gave this book 2 stars instead of 1 is because it's finally a reverse Harem. And by the way Thor is a little bitch.

Oy

That didn't go how I expected and Thor's temper tantrums are getting way old. I like that the amount of characters were stamped down some, with recurrences of the originals.

Someone is definitely an Anita Blake fan!! These books are getting more and more like the Anita Blake series! (Which I happen to love!) It wasn't much of a surprise that these books are taking this route really, this book I would definitely say was erotica.

I didn't like the rape aspect in this and how he turned it round to pleasure that just annoyed me, but I liked the way the writer got you to feel sorry for him by the end of the book. I hope she doesn't add him to her lovers! But then Anita has sex with her enemies so anything is possible!

Love the take and reading all about the mythology, that makes this series definitely better than the Anita books imo.

3.5 rounded up

This book was not as strong as the first 3 in the series, but that was due to character choices, but the writing. As always, Amy has a way with words - though I don’t always agree with her choices as an author. This book was... rough. Non-con and flat out tape rape, along with mental manipulations that are in someways even worse. All that bothered me, and didn’t really seem to advance the story or the character arch, though the end results of the captivity did.

There were parts of this book I really didn't like. I don't get why there had to be sexual humiliation and rape as part of this story, and it didn't sit with me. I almost stopped reading, and had to jst skim through parts of it. That part of the story is only worth one star. The rest half of the book made up for it a little bit, but not enough..

Sadly I’m not finishing this book. Over half of it was violent and trigger happy with rape etc. then finished with porn to the nth degree. what the hell- this series started out as something far more than that. I guess if I’d decided to walk in on this series as is, I would be fine. But this was from out of nowhere crazy. Anyway. New series time.

This is where I say fuck this shit I'm out. DNF @ 32% and that's me being generous. So many characters to work with, so much that can be done in the huge world that's been built but nope its a rehash of thor and blue. The same I'm not gonna betray you but I will, dark rapey dance but worse.

The rape was just too much for me. The storyline kind of went to crap as well. I'm hoping the next one will be better. At least it was only 4 bucks wasted.

Why oh why

Did the author have to have graphic rape scenes and bring Jesus into the book?!?

As for the rape scenes, the other reviewers were right in regards to the sexual scenes being more graphic than her scenes with her lovers, which makes no sense. However, the comments about Stockholm is a little too far. Prior to the abduction Anubis and Vervain became close through their mental connection and she confided in him many of her thoughts and desires. So, she did have an sexual attraction for him. Therefore, she was looking for the good in him as a result. Later, once she realized it was a sick twisted love, she acknowledged it was rape.

Again, she had to bring up the Christian faith and make fun of it. I hate and I mean hate, when authors put into their books their religious and political beliefs, (unless I purchased the book for those views). The statement that jesus was a hippie, I could care less about. However, when she called him a false God, a ladies man and "jesus does not know everything" she took it too far. I have no clue what she has against christianity, but I have read other books by this author and she seems to always throw in a snide remark about the Christian faith. She needs to have a debate with a priest/preacher, write in a journal or talk to friends and family about her concerns/problems because her novels are not the correct outlet. In actuality, by making fun of the Christian faith, she is wiping out half of her reader base. I truly do not understand it.

Another thing I have issue with, is the way the author brings in the reverse harem aspect. So far in each reverse harem series the author has written, the heroine is happy in a monogamous relationship and despises people who are unfaithful. She loves one person and may have lustful thoughts about another, but would never cheat nor choose the other person. Yet, later in the series, the heroine, usually due to magic, gains additional men in her relationship. It also, always, seems like that she loves one more than the other and the rest are just consorts. It is so frustrating. In all honesty, I believe that the series would be better not being a reverse harem, the way that it is because it always seems like a forced issue. Don't get me wrong, I always love the fantasy of reverse harem. It may be trite, but there is a reason for the group of guy friends who end up with the same girl opposed to the way the author writes.

As for the rest of the book it was written well and this book contained a major plot twist that will affect future books.

MAJOR SPOILERS THROUGHOUT:
I liked this installment in The Godhunter series. While it wasn't anywhere close to being my favorite, there was some things in it that I enjoyed more than in the other books. It was fast paced, constantly had my attention, and there was plenty of drama.
A recurring theme for this series seems to be Vervain being kidnapped and I don't tend to like that type of plot line. I mainly struggled with this book because of Vervain's kidnapping and everything that happened while she was in Duat. It rubbed me the wrong way that Vervain forgave Blue for his mind rape of her, but it wasn't as bad as what happened in this book. Anubis raped Vervain repeatedly and I found it extremely disturbing that she forgave him. It takes a special kind of person to forgive a rapist at all and how fast she was willing to accept his apology made me a little upset.
I think that what Anubis did was worse then rape because he used her mind against her, making her enjoy it against her will, and when Vervain continued to sympathize with him, my enjoyment of the book started to wane. I don't condone rape and while it sometimes does happen in the books I read, I have never had one mess with me like this one did and it scares me, because that means Amy Sumida could very well make it a recurring plot in her books.
The moments when we were not in Duat I enjoyed. This new lioness/multiple mates thing is interesting. I think that it will make me a lot more tolerant of Trevor. I have mentioned before that I have issues with him and I think that this new development will help me accept his character more. Based on the final line of this book, I am scared that Vervain will go back to Anubis and have him become one of her harem. I don't think that it will happen, but I am concerned that it is even a possibility.
SIDE NOTE: Re. From the brief glimpses we got of him, I found him incredibly intriguing and I definitely hope to see more of him in the future. I would not object to him becoming one of the members in Vervain's harem.
Overall, I did enjoy this book. There was just too many issues with it for me to give it a higher rating than what I did. Despite the shortcomings this book had, I will be continuing the series. Every series has some books in it that fall flat and I think that this one just fits that spot. Hopefully, the series will get back on track with Green Tea and Black Death .

Rape book

It is one thing to read dark romance and expect this kind of thing and its another to read a very long paranormal romance series with this terror of a book in the middle. I suffered through to get to the next book but it felt like I was held hostage. I haven't made up my mind whether I'm going to unfollow this author yet, I almost already did. Spoiler : There is a trigger warning at the beginning but its nowhere near enough. Its not just a scene, this book is one long tribute to abusive psychology and rape. Most of this book is rape in one way or another and its like she's trying to justify it. The worst of it is when her supposed friends try to get her to see it from his perspective. Towards the end of the book another of her friends expressed interest in Anubus and she omits that he raped her repeatedly. Just says the interest was "one sided". I really can't stand the level of abuse in this book and I do occasionally read very dark romance. Also the way it's like she just gets over is disturbing. I don't think someone necessarily has any expected reaction to abuse but this is just weird. Its treated so minor by everyone else. Like rape isn't a big deal. I already knew there was some major internal misogyny within this author but it comes out in full force in this book. She is a good writer and the stories are creative but I feel less healthy after reading her work. The best detailed sex scene she has written in this series so far was a rape scene. It's like the author isn't as comfortable writing about sex if it's consensual. I'm also not a fan of her direction for the RH aspect to the book. "The magic makes me do it" type of format is again like she isn't as comfortable if this is a woman's choice. The mfc lets men walk all over her and she forgives again and again. One threat of rape is enough to cut someone off for LIFE. Once is unforgivable unless the forgiveness is for your own sake. Like I said the internal misogyny is very apparent. If you don't mind feeling like a lower lifeform then you will probably enjoy the book. It's written well enough. But if bad characters and poor choices bother you then skim it or avoid it. A badass fmc is not just one that knows how to fight and love. She knows her worth and how to cut people out when they are unworthy. All I've seen of the men so far I am not impressed.

Wow just wow

Trigger warning: many books have a chapter here or there with potential trigger issues. Half this book is an abuse trigger issue. Please honor thyself and pass over this book if you have triggers. The author made a point to make this book an optional read with plenty of captions in the next book yo fill the reader in on key highlight like this finally turning into the RH it is advertised as.
I am constantly testing myself and my triggers to ensure that I have done my self scare properly. Some parts were hard but there was enough fictional aspects to it that I was able to let the triggers go.
I give it 4 starts because I think the challenges with Anubis went on too long and it was too quick of a transition back into other lovers beds. But the FMC finally gets to explore some of the desires and emotions she has been having for other characters bring the RH into play finally.

This was at once my favourite and least favourite so far, *spoilers ahead*
There is rape, and it is rape a character takes control over her body and forces her to comply. I do not take issue with rape being in a book I take issue with the Stockholm Syndrome aspects of it that made me feel shifty and enraged my inner feminist.
There are always those books your friend recommends and you read it but your inner feminist is enraged because there is mistreatment that goes unpunished or overlooked, this almost crossed that line for me somewhere in the middle.

I loved the way that vervain never gives up all hope and I was very shocked but admiring as she forgave people for horrible things, kinda like she did Loki. This is a good book and don't let my feelings dissuade you from reading it, I just felt that people who have similar feelings would want a heads up.

Rape is violence. NOT sex.

This character has allowed a relationship to develop with not just one rapist, but two. This is the second book where she has been sexually assaulted, humiliated, tormented etc by a "god". I was suffering through it hoping that she learned her lesson the last time and would make a quick get away or drain his powers or anything really. But no. She probes his mind with her "powers" and decides the rapes & torture must be her fault because he is "honorable". WTF!? This is the 21st century. Blaming ourselves for the evil acts of male persons is just wrong.
I made it to the 34% mark, when the whole "he's so honorable, so I must have been in the wrong" b.s. came up. DON'T read this. There is no bleach strong enough to remove this crap from your brain.

Content Warning: rape

This book overall was just as wonderful as the 3 before it. The story, writing, details,, characters.. everything was equal to the others previous in the series as far as quality goes.
I, honestly, didn't read reviews before downloading it, so someone may have mentioned it.
This book contained several rape scenes. Its not violent, but rape is rape. Coerced rape is maybe the correct term. I can't remember exact, but there may have been a fully forced rape scene. (I skimmed those bits.) There are several scenes of sexual and mental abuse. Its not until Chapter 29 that you've finally passed all of it.

I just thought it was worth mentioning.

Be prepared

To say this was hard to read is an understatement. There are trigger scenarios galore. Just know that before you start. Warnings aside, it was an exceptional read. The best in the series so far in my opinion. Book one is a close second, though. Or heroine is back to her normal snarky, funny personality which was weaker in books 2 and 3.
It is intense. So be prepared.

Marked by Death

Vervain was injured by Anubis's death blade and it slowly sucked out her soul until Anubis had her. She became Deaths prisoner. This is book 4 in the Godhunter series. This book has some gritty experiences not for everyone. I like that she never loses her smart mouth, the wise cracks always come out even in the face of defeat. Im still hooked on this series.

I have to say, this is my least favorite book in the Godhunter series---mainly due to the rape/captive theme the story revolved around. Some excellent story progression on other fronts and I love the relationship progression with some of the main love interests. The series finally begins a shift to reverse harem, and the men are perfect.

Damned confused but enthusiastic (mega spoilers)

So I will admit it went quiet dark and I contemplated stopping. Vervain's kidnapped again, mind and body completely controlled by her captor luckily it didn't last the whole book. Gets free then starts up her harem finally with Trevor being alpha and Thor jelly. Can't wait to read more. JL
