In the afterglow of a very successful Christmas, Hana has some downtime while Nanase meets up with her old class. Might there be a rival plot line in the offering? You’d think that Nanase’s love for Hana might be cemented by now... but...

Okay, there are two very good jokes that I am calling out in this volume before we hit the serious bits. One, when Nanase meets with her gal pals and silently nods that she and Hana kissed, the smash cut to the outside of the house with the huge ‘SQUEAL’ sound effect over it, implying the sound barrier has been rent in twain by teenage girls, is probably the best moment in manga this week.

The other, with one of Hana’s friends inserting the ba-bmp heart throbbing sound effect herself while Hana reads a text from Nanase, is almost as good.

We end up taking the slow boat to rival town, but oh howdy does this go in a whole other direction than expected. No, Nanase has zero interest in this bastard (you’ll pardon my French but he earned that) and she’s clear to everybody around her that Hana’s her true love.

Well, that’s not going to stop a lusty bag of teenage boy-juices and we find ourselves in a fairly serious situation that I think Nanase handles very well for what is an incredible violation of her person. It’s an interesting look at how even with our heroine standing up for herself, there’s a very real residual guilt for what somebody else did to her.

I won’t say Hana handles it the best, but if he’d carried through on his plan I don’t think I would have faulted him much. The story makes a bit of a redemptive move towards the end, but it’s going to need to work hard to save this rival scum from my judging eyes.

What I do love is that even with the fits and starts, Hana and Nanase continue to acknowledge that they are learning their way around communicating with one another and they have their disagreements but they don’t really fight about it. They are one of my favourite low-key couples in shojo right now.

So, yes, a very interesting volume all around. It’s not technically designed this way, but it also illustrates how easily men are lead on by anything a woman says and need to check their dumb asses before they do something stupid (seriously, Nanase could NOT be more clear and he still goes for it - she is utterly blameless).

Despite my affection for Nocchi in the previous volume, she really comes across as a vicious saboteur this time. Part of the reason rival scum thinks he’s even worth a shot is because Nocchi disapproves of Hana, based on absolutely nothing. She’s trying at the end, but she’s not as good a friend to Nanase as she is to others, simply by her own actions.

3.5 stars and we are up to the full 4 today because it deals with a very touchy subject and looks into the guilt of the victim and less so the perpetrator. It’s something that should be addressed more often and I was very happy to see it.

Poor Gojo, no chance for him 🤷🏻‍♀️ Well, staying silent all that time wasn’t going to get him anywhere, it’s better to have a clean resolution, no matter which way it goes.

It’s hard to see long term success for Nanase and Hana. They are very different people with different goals and lifestyles. I know people like to believe that love can overcome all obstacles, but it’s not really true.

This feeling never ever fully disappears.

So Gojou finally confessed, and he kissed her. I wasn't expecting that. It's also nice that Hana and Nanase are being more honest with each other - sharing problems, doing what they really want to do without holding back, and so on. Also, it's a good thing that Gojou and Nanase are able to talk to each other and sort everything out. After all, you don't just throw away years of friendship like that.

For the tiniest bit, though, I'm starting to be annoyed with Nanase. I hope it doesn't last too long. I feel a bit bad for Gojou-kun; but then again, I really like Nanase and Hana together so I suppose it's okay for him to hurt a bit so he could realize the truth.

That suspension just seemed to come out of the blue, didn't it? It seemed a bit over the top as well, allowing no contact with anyone to school and all that. (And a bit unreasonable too, if I might add.) After that happened, their relationship started getting weirder.

God, Hana, can't you be more honest to yourself? Can't you see you're hurting the feelings of others? Try to put your feet in her shoes for a while. Try to understand that she doesn't really give a damn about what you do. She loves you too much for that.

And you too, Nanase. For goodness's sake. Nothing will come out of hiding what you truly feel. What in the world was that about? I thought the two of them broke up, then there was a date, then Nanase was telling him to cut their relationship (though not directly). What's happening to you people?
