I grew up in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and spent most of my summers in Smithfield, Virginia.

I first realized I wanted to be a writer while attending the George Washington Carver High School for Engineering & Science – yes, there was a time when I wanted to be an architect, at least I thought I did. Then, one day, I couldn't take the boredom of another chemistry class and decided to write a novel. It was passed around to all of my classmates, who loved it. I did this several times and realized I had zero talent in math, science, or architecture. I was much better at writing, so I focused on that when I went to university.

In 1995, I chucked living in the US for the good life in Sweden with my Swedish husband.

I have to admit that I don't usually give mistresses very much sympathy, especially when they are fully aware that the men they are involved with are married. Mia, the main female character in Snowbound, is the unrepentant mistress of a man by the name of Evan. Evan is definitely an arrogant jerk and in the beginning Mia isn't much better. Mia is defiantly proud of the fact that she believes that Evan will be leaving his goody two shoes wife for his hot and willing mistress. Shame on you Mia! There's no excuse you should have been able to give yourself that could have justified your 6 year affair with a married man! Now here's my shame: I enjoyed this book. Golden told a good story.I enjoyed the book despite the fact that there is a weirdly inappropriate conversation between Jake and Owen that will leave you asking why the heck he needed to divulge such intimate details to a man he had just met and the fact that not one of Mia's girlfriends told her that she was being a skank. Sorry Mia, but knowingly sleeping with a married man for so long without a twinge of conscience kinda makes you a skank.

Although this is a short story at only approximately 138 pages, you don't feel as if the characters aren't fully developed. You get enough of Mia's back story to get an idea of how she convinced herself that what she was doing was acceptable. However, I don't approve of her rationale and if for no other reason than her own pride she should have ended the relationship with Evan long before she did. Jake, the South African photographer staying in the guest house on her grandmother's property, and Mia's love interest is an interesting character as well. I really liked the fact that the race factor is important to the story, but not the whole picture. I really wish that this had been a full length book because the story is a good one and there could have been a lot more to it. In order for me to fully accept Melissa's response to her cheating husband I would have liked to know more about her as well. I think that my prejudice in favor of longer books comes through when I read these short stories; especially if I enjoyed the story. I always end up wanting more. Maybe Golden will write a sequel that could fill in all of those bits and pieces that were left out. (Hint, hint)

Good Storytelling

One thing you need to understand about Kim Golden is when you buy her books, expect a story-not just some tale about a man and woman hooking up and screwing a hundred times throughout. You get a story painted with vivid images of the events and picturesque settings wishing you could be there experiencing it.

Snowbound is the story of Mia and Jake and Evan. It's a tangled mess of false love and false hopes and insecurity and uncertainty. Ima has allowed herself to be played by Evan one to may times so she escapes the big city by traveling to Vermont where she meets Jake, a South African photojournalist. The only problem is Evan has a problem taking no for an answer which complicates the budding feelings Mia and Jake feel toward one another giving meaning to threes a crowd. Add a snowstorm and a surprised guest and you can't swipe your kindle forward fast enough. Very good read.

Snowbound is the story of a woman named Mia who's excited and looking forward to starting a life with her boyfriend. The problem is, said boyfriend is married and despite his promise to leave his wife by Thanksgiving, he's playing the happy husband and announcing that he and his wife are having a baby. Mia gets a clue and heads to the home her grandmother left her in Vermont. Her intention is to be alone, lick her wounds and get over her heartache. That's not to be the case however, because there's a guest in grandma's guesthouse...

What I Liked: Mia. Yes, Mia was sleeping with a married man for years and was unapologetic about it. Yes, she was friends (or pretended to be at least) with the wife of her lover, and while carrying on said affair. She's even the type of woman who'll have sex with the man at a party that he and his wife are attending. So why on earth do I like the character of Mia? Because the author wrote her real. She doesn't try to make the reader see her through rose colored glasses nor does she try to make it (the affair) the fault of his wife. Instead, Mia is written with her ugly flaws bare. Basically, Mia knew what she was doing, and didn't care until she got hurt. But then we also get to see Mia move on and grow a little as a person. In an e-book world where heroines can be cloyingly sweet, it was nice to read about one that wasn't.
I also immensely enjoyed the pacing of the first half of the story. Mia and our hero Jake are getting to know each other and not sexing it up ten seconds after meeting one another. The "rules" were fun and just made to be broken.

What I Didn't Like: While I liked the pacing at the start of the book, Jake's jealousy and confessions of love just kind of came out of nowhere. I would have liked more time to have passed and for there to have been a clear and obvious reasons for such strong feelings that seemed to spring abruptly from their budding attraction. The talk between Jake and Mia's childhood crush seemed inappropriate and unnecessary, especially considering they didn't know one another and the info shared was extremely personal.

My Final Thoughts: This was a nice holiday read that didn't rely on sex to get the story told or keep your interest. Mia was a woman who allowed herself to get caught up in a love affair that had no future. While I don't approve of her actions or behavior, I was happy that she made a decision to move on and stuck with it. No wishy-washy behavior here. The book wasn't the most exciting story ever told, but that's okay. Despite the fact that the storyline goes into hyper-drive about halfway through, I really liked Snowbound and recommend it to people who want a simple romance told by a competent author. I give this book three stars (I would have made if four stars, but I wasn't feeling the rush to love)for being a great book to read on a cold winter afternoon.

Kim Golden’s Snowbound pulled me in despite myself. I didn’t like the protagonist at the start. Instead I shared her friend’s disapproval of her relationship with another woman’s husband. I felt frustrated too by detailed descriptions of furtive hook-ups in other people’s houses. But Mia is about to be betrayed, and it’s hard not to feel some kind of sympathy as she suddenly sees what everyone else knew so well.

A long car trip, a few annoying phonecalls, and the lure of pleasant scenery takes the story from Thanksgiving’s betrayal into Christmas preparations in small-town Vermont. Suddenly the difference between big-city deception and small-town allure is clear. Reader and protagonist settle into a better place, and the presence of war-photographer Jake Groenewald, from South Africa, only adds to the allure.

In a small town, there’s time to see beyond race and background, and to truly care. Mia moves out of her comfort zone, back into the comforts of home. Scenery and conversation sparkle, and sparks of a very pleasing romance start to fly. Occasional glitches in the first person present tense narration become less important as Mia and Jake tell their own tales against a backdrop of snow and memories. Meanwhile memories of Evan drive a wedge of unwanted ice between them.

In the end, it’s almost sad to see this growing relationship reduced to physical union. But it’s pleasing to see torn hearts and relationships offered the chance of more. And the contrast of town and country in our souls is beautifully drawn in this fairly quick, romantic read.

Disclosure: I won a free ecopy of this novella and enjoyed it over Christmas

This was a good book for the new author Ms. Golden. It was the story of Mia and Jake. Mia is a mistress scorned. She believed the lies of her lover Evan who said that he would leave his wife for her. Instead of hearing the news on Thanksgiving with their circle of friends that they will be together, she heard the complete opposite. Her lover and his wife were having a baby. Mia of course was devastated, and decided to get away to Vermont. This is where she meets her new tenant and future love interest Jake. Jake had his own demons that he was hiding from. They are attracted to each other, but they don't pursue a relationship, initially. Then circumstances happened that made them come together.

I liked Mia despite her being the mistress. She got sucked into the lie that Evan was going to leave his wife for her. Mia was too gullible, but I believe that could happen, especially when you think you love someone. You believe what you want of that person. Mia went to Vermont to cleanse her relational palette so to speak. Jake is a man whose life has been marred with a failed engagement and PTSD as a war photographer. He came to America from South Africa for a change as well as to work for Reuters (a news outlet). Jake is a man that saw his own shortcomings and has learned from them.

I did like the concept of the story, but the execution of some scenes were not believable, in my opinion. Also, Mia and Jake didn't really start interacting with one another until about at least 40% into the book so their relationship seemed too rushed. There were too many scenes that wrapped up nice and tidy when there should have been mayhem. Let's just say, if I met the confirmed mistress, I would not be so calm. :).

Snowbound would be a good Hallmark movie type book with the sweet HEA.

Normally I don’t read straight romance stories but I took a chance on this sweet, short story.

The story begins with Mia who thinks her life is about to take a major change. She’s going to move in with her love of her life, which just happens to be married. Well, things don’t turn out the way she expected. After running away to her family’s home, Mia meets an unexpected stranger, Jake. Mia must figure out if she can move forward this new man or will she go back to her old ways with Evan.

The Plot:
For the most part, the story plot was ok. I just wish it wasn’t so predictable. Nothing about it surprised me. I wanted more conflict, more tension, just more of something. What conflict that Ms. Golden tried to add turned out a little flat. Because this was a short story I know the author had to get to the romance quickly but damn they fell for each other too fast.

The Characters:
Ok I liked these guys. Mia wasn’t perfect and sometimes it’s good to see people this way. I’m just surprised she was so naïve. COME ON!!! 6 years with Evan. Girl should have listened to her friends. Jake, I could probably crush on you. You seemed a little light hearted to be a photojournalist; maybe I wanted you a little more wounded. Evan… sigh. I think this is the most predictable character in the book. I didn’t see why Mia was with you for 6 years.

Writing Style:
This book could benefit from a good editor. There were a couple of misspelled words, paragraphs were too long, and the beginning seemed a little bit stiff. One thing I noticed, that when it came to the POV of Jake there was no difference between the tones from Mia POV. This is something that a lot of authors have problems with.

Randomness: Owen telling Jake about him and Mia. WTF. Seriously dude. Not cool.

This book was definitely a solid 3 stars out of 5. I would definitely read more from this author.

It was alright. Again, I felt that they got together too fast. She's barely finished with Evan before she moved on with Jake. I kept finding myself being irritated by the things happening. Like Owen and Jake’s talk. What was that about? They just met yet Owen is going into details about him and Mia to Jake. And there the few times where it was like Mia was the victim. Melissa actually said it wasn't her fault and that Evan encouraged her. Yes, it was her fault. Hers and Evan's. Evan may have encouraged her and all that, but she went along with it. Happily. Even laughing about giving him a blowjob while their friends were around. Really, I had no sympathy Mia. And the ending… asking them to stay and having Christmas dinner together. No, just no.

I just loved this story. It was cleverly written with very likeable characters. Not much happens and you kinda know how it ends, but it is heart warming and wonderful story about finding true love and finding your path in life. I enjoyed the rules and the witty and fun "hero". I loved the way the author chose to let us get to know the characters by switching the storyteller.

Overall I really liked it and will recommend it to every girl/woman looking for a pleasant holiday book to read during a few cold evenings.

Really good and cozy read! This is the story of Mia Wilkinson a woman who got caught up in a relationship with a married man. Upon learning that this man has been truly lying to her she goes away to her grandmother's house that she now owns. Its a book about discovering one's self worth and learning that you are worth the good things even if you have made some mistakes. All in all a great read!

3.5 stars. This story, was cute but I felt it needed more than the ending. I wanted an Epilogue, of Jake and Mia. Of Melissa and Evan. Hey wishful thinking, Yeah. Still a nice and adorable story. Kudos to the author.

I loved this story

Mia Wilkinson had a lot of soul searching to do when she realized her married boyfriend of six years was not leaving his wife like he said he would. All of her friends were attached and happy and she was all alone. She had no one. She needed time to sort out her life and there was no better place than her grandma Ruth's house she inherited in picturesque Hunters Green, Vermont. There was only one problem, she had to deal with a handsome photojournalist and Africaner Jake Groenwald, her tenant in the guest house who had some soul searching to do of his own. Mia thought she managed her attraction to him with her ten rules of engagement. Slowly they find themselves breaking every one of those rules one by one especially after her arrogant ex arrives, thinking he could have his cake and eat it too. It made Mia question what on earth did she see in him in the first place. Her feelings for Jake is more intense than she has ever felt, not even for Evan. I love how Mia and Melissa come full circle with their relationship and Mia takes responsibility for her actions with the affair.

I love how the author wrote the support of the family and friends and even the townspeople for Mia and Jake. Everyone knew that Jake and Mia would hit it off. Now they will really try to make a go of their relationship.

DNF.

The mistress getting a HEA doesn't sit right with me. Sure Mia may have been self-aware in the sense that she knew what she was doing was wrong and didn't try to justify her actions of sleeping with a married man. However, rebounding with Jake and calling it love after having one decent conversation...is there something wrong with novellas just getting characters to a point of saying they like each other? Why does falling in love always have to be the expected or given endgame? I understand the point of romance, but honestly though it would be a nice change of pace if two people who literally just met didn't instantly fall in love.

Oh, and who tells intimate details of their sex life to someone's landlord, involving their landlord, the FIRST time they're meeting that person? Who does that, looking at you Owen. How I would have passively enjoyed this if certain scenes had not happened. That being one of them.

Long story short, if you don't mind reading about a mistress getting an upgrade in her romantic life, then this is for you.

Love in Vermont

This is an awesome read! I didn’t like Mia in the beginning. As I read more I really felt sorry for her. She allowed Evan to use her because she didn’t know her worth. But from her heartbreak she realizes she’s been selling herself short loving a married man.
Jake is running from his demons and as fate would have it, he ends up in Vermont renting grandma Ruth’s guesthouse. There he meets Mia, his landlady’s granddaughter, who has inherited her grandmother’s house. After a while after fate is still working her magic and keeps bring them together and they both feel there’s a connection between them. Jake shows Mia that she deserves to be loved and sets about going for what he wants. Once they admit they want to see where their feelings will take them, they find a love they never knew was possible.
