Love will find a way in any language.

Heading for a week's vacation in Majorca, Daniel has a seating problem and has to move. So does the person next to him. A beautiful young man also named Daniel. After moving to the correct seats, they end up sitting next to each other for the short flight from London.

But the coincidences keep on happening. Sometimes on purpose. But it almost seems like they are meant to be together. They keep meeting other guys that draw their interest, bit not enough to avoid falling in love with each other. Shared beds and spots just off the path produce pairs, triples, quads, and quints as events mix and match. But soon the pairing gets more fixed and the love of the island drags the Daniels team back to their dream.

Should it be Gay Romance in Majorca or Gay Romance on Majorca? This little grammatical conundrum runs throughout this masterful tale of romance in a romantic setting. Whether it's "on" or "in" Daniel (23) and Daniel (22) get it on almost from the first moment when they are seated wrongly on their Palma-bound flight from overcast-grey London. French boy "Don Yell" and English boy "Dan-y'l" are matched more than in first names, both are escaping not only the gloom of a British summer for the vibrant Mediterranean island but also broken relationships. Of course, it takes a while for each to discover the other is gay and well up for a sexual relationship… but not too long, among the brush of a deserted pathway, high above the sea. The sex is fine, but is it love flowering? A trio of randy Scots boys might have something to say about that, especially disruptively beautiful teenager Dunk.

A signature style of any McDonald book is the marvellous realisation of the places and the landscape in which the narratives unfold in his lucid prose. It's evident the author knows them, quite often intimately; and it is as evident that he loves flying, because hardly a story gets away without the smaller details of taking off, landing, the awfulness of airport buildings. It all adds to the enjoyment and ensures the realistically formed characters are painted against the backgrounds as though – even as strangers – they belong there.

Loved the characters and the story …...the narrative really sparked my interest in Majorca and I found myself looking at maps, google and other information and planning a holiday. Certainly felt like the author had some special experiences on the island.

ALERT: MAJORCA INFESTED WITH GAY BOYS!

Since picking up my Kindle right before the pandemic and having never stopped using it, I've read a lot of gay themed fiction and Anthony McDonald has been my most favorite and most read author. I've read three different trilogies he's written: The Dog in the Chapel series, Adam's Star series, and Seville Trilogy. While his stories tend to read a bit like "soap operas," his prose is beautifully descriptive and his characters fully three-dimensional and real. Also, the sex scenes are written to compliment the narrative (not the other way around) and they leave much to the reader's imagination making them far more erotic. You don't have five pages of pornography inserted into the middle of an otherwise wonderful narrative.

So, having not had a "McDonald fix" recently, I decided to read one of his romance novellas. I'll be traveling to Spain this fall and likely visiting the island of Majorca so I thought this would be a good choice. If I was only in my early twenties and gorgeous, judging by this account I would undoubtedly have a great time!

This definitely gay soap opera begins when two young men, one English and one French, strangers to one another who venture off on solo vacations to Majorca after recent breakups with their respective boyfriends. They're on the same flight and conveniently sit next to one another, but then are separated because they didn't correctly read their seat assignments. Only to conveniently be together again when it so happens their correct seats were also beside one another. And so, the romance begins!

I'll spare any more details in case you're going to read this story, but it seems wherever they wander, together or separately, these guys conveniently encounter other handsome gay men their age (twenty-somethings), coupled or not, and they must decide if and how all of them might get horizontal. The story is told in the first person by the English lad and McDonald is talented in the way his prose reflects the boy's innocence and maturity for his age. This is definitely a "romance" novel. McDonald doesn't shy away from frequent sex scenes either to reinforce the hormonal urges of these young men, or to demonstrate their emotional attachments for one another. Not only more frequent, I also found the sex scenes to be more "literal" than is typical of McDonald's descriptions of intimacy in his other books. Still, it is important to say, as with his other stories, McDonald is a traditionalist and emphasizes that monogamy is the desired end all his characters crave.

I still love McDonald's writing. His depictions of the landscapes and "pueblos" in which his characters are placed really stimulate the imagination. I could feel the bright sun on my face and the heat on my skin, gaze with them at the lush fauna, as well as listen to chirping birds he loves to name. Lay with them on the sand at night and stare up at the brilliant stars in a dark sky unpolluted by city light. Also, his description of meals his characters consumed made me hungry!

"Gay Romance in Majorca" is true to its title. Nothing bad happens. Everything works itself out in the end as these boys navigate their way through who they are and what they feel. It is a happy, sweet, light-hearted read. It was just a little too contrived for me to have loved it as much as I have McDonald's longer, more developed novels.
